@Fizza I finally sat down with it (the N64 original) a few years ago, and I really enjoyed it.
I've always loved the movie Groundhog Day, so I think the three-day mechanic is really cool...but it did get me a few times, where I would try to tackle a dungeon or something at day 2 or 3, and had to restart it all over again >__<
I haven't tried the 3DS remake yet, but I hear the changes are kind of a mixed bag.
My first game was the first game, on NES, around 1989 or 1990. We were at Hills (rip) looking for a game, and that golden cartridge totally caught my eye. The whole family fell in love with it (aside from Mom, who didn't play video games).
@Rykdrew I would have to double check, but I think they did add bots to it? That sounds familiar. Of course, if you're on PC, you can add almost any mod you want to it.
Yep, it does have bots, and they're engine-side, so in theory, they should work with any mod. Dunno how they fare with maps that don't have waypoints, though.
@Beaucine I had played a fair amount of FPS in the mid-to-late 90s, and didn't really care much for PC Q2 when I tried it. I remember it being alright for a while, but much like Half-Life, it started to get a bit dull halfway through (although I did finish the entire game). I definitely need to give it a second chance...maybe I'll even play it with the CD soundtrack this time.
@progx 360 port is supposed to be pretty good. But I'm sure Nightdive is working on a new one.
@Beaucine Haven't played the PSX one, but N64 Q2 is pretty good. There are a few familiar areas in it, but mostly it's new levels, yeah. I enjoyed the single player campaign more than the one on PC, and four-player split-screen Deathmatch is always a hoot.
It's not quite as drastic as DOOM 64 was, most of the graphics and stuff are still the same, and even the new textures match the theme of the original. HUD and menus are very different, but you get used to them. Skyboxes are replaced with parallax scrolling skies (like Q1 had). Weapons have a muzzle flash added in. I think they changed the color of the railgun?
@TsukiDeity "ThreeWave" is just, like the "brand name" of this CTF mod. I'm not sure if it was the -first- CTF mod, but it was definitely the most popular. I used to play a heck of a lot of it back in the day. In addition to the flag, there are also four runes that grant mini-powers, and there's a grappling hook.
As far as NightDive's Quake, I think one of the mission packs also has CTF built in, but I've never tried it.
@progx They already released Q2 and 3 for consoles, back in the 90s (please don't hurt me) (I actually like N64 Q2 better than the PC version)
If the vanilla GoG release is giving you issues, there are tons of fan-made source ports out there you can try.
OH, actually, Q2 PC version did get ported to the 360, it's on a Q4 bonus disc.
@Nancyboy I know what you mean, 2000 wasn't a great decade for gaming. There were some gems here and there, but really a lot of shovelware and lackluster games. Console videogames had really broken free of "nerd culture" and into the mainstream in the late 90s, so, especially in the US, a lot of publishers jumped in trying to find a niche in the market. The original XBox probably best demonstrates this.
But this is all just my opinion... shrug I'm sure a lot of people have more nostalgia for that era. Sometimes it even hits me, and I just have this urge to play through some games that I didn't like much at the time, and which aged even worse.
I liked PH and ST a lot, but I couldn't do the stylus controls. I had to play them with ROM hacks/PAR codes that let you control with d-pad + buttons, like Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland did. 300% better that way.
@Maulbert So then Zelda 2 should be a mainline game, since it has both the Triforce and Ganon (in fact, it was this game that introduced us to the Triforce of Courage). Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, and Breath of the Wild don't have the Triforce, so aren't "mainline games", by your definition. Skyward Sword doesn't have Ganon.
@XO-Frats Aspect ratio isn't the same thing as resolution. GB/C is 160x144 (not 1:1), a 4x scale would get you 640x576 with windowboxing, or to fill the entire width you'd need an uneven scale of 4.5. Analogue Pocket is 1600x1440, so it's perfectly 10x scaled to fill the entire screen.
NTSC S/NES is 256x224 (sort of), also not 1:1, but it's supposed to be stretched to 4:3, so unless you have a pretty high-res screen (at least 1024x672 if my recollection is correct), there are going to be some issues no matter what.
I do see an argument for 1:1 being a sort of compromise for also supporting vertical oriented games like MAME and Atari Lynx, though. There isn't really a one-size-fits-all solution for MAME when it comes to LCD.
@RupeeClock @KayFiOS From the FAQ: Q. Will 3DS assets be supported? A. Yes, eventually!
@Banjo- They show it on WiiU right before they announce the option to uncap the framerate, so I'm guessing they just didn't have that tweak enabled for that clip.
My least favorite Zelda game, but I would gladly play this again just for the improved framerate. Maybe I'll even try modding my WiiU for it.
Some of those other tweaks sound nice too, I wanted to try my hand at a Navi-less ROM hack, but never got around to it (if that's what that feature actually does).
Didn't see it mentioned, but hopefully there's a tweak to increase the text rate, too. It's really difficult to go back to the original slow speed.
J/E for sure. I liked this game for a while, but eventually I got real sick of how buggy and unfinished it was. I know I got real close to the end of the game, but I can't remember if I finished it or not, or if I hit a game-breaking bug.
I don't really keep up with game prices, but I'm pretty sure I don't have anything that rare. I bought EarthBound when it came out, but it's not -that- rare. And the strategy guide isn't in great shape anymore.
I used to have a sealed copy of Twilight Princess for GameCube, but I opened it so I could play it :0
Sim City 64 did see the light of day, just not in the US (because the 64DD didn't come out here). There's an English fan translation, you can even run it on an EverDrive, it's pretty neat.
@Drew250 I think the thing I dislike most about EarthBound, is that once you get Paula, you no longer get to ride the bicycle around, hear that great music, and ring that bell. Anytime I hear a bicycle bell in Real Life, that music immediately pops into my head.
@RadioHedgeFund Switch version would be cool, I actually modded the game to use the Switch button graphics on the UI, since I use my WiiU Pro pad to play. But I think the Switch version is some kind of cloud thing, so performance probably isn't that great.
I think a lot of it's fun, especially the player customization, "photo" opportunities, concerts in the lobby, etc. The first time I played it, I was like "Wow, this is just like a virtual anime convention." Just needs a room where you can actually browse player merchant booths.
But yeah, the F2P stuff is just not for me at all, and there's a LOT of it in there. And a lot of grinding for drops, so you can grind for more drops, so you can craft an item, that you can collect 100 of, to use to craft a weapon that's 1% better than the one you currently have...
I never had trouble finding other players. I usually played with friends (they all lost interest when New Genesis game out), or just ran solo...but even when you run solo, if you don't explicitly set a password to lock everyone out, random people will come and go.
I still need to finish story mode. It is looooooooooooong.
@Specter_of-the_OLED They didn't finish Beyond Zero Tolerance, it says it's still the unfinished prototype and is only included as a bonus extra. Dunno about Underground, I don't remember hearing about that one before.
The Ancients Beckon is one of the best digital pinball games I have ever played. They took the best parts of the best '80s/'90s pinball games and mixed them all together. My only gripe is that trying to use the touch screen to nudge the table is an effort in futility.
Shantae 2 isn't on the list!
Not one single Game & Watch game was on the list!
Puzzle Quest is available on cart, but for a mere $7, the digital copy might be worthwhile to someone who doesn't have the game already. The Switch remake is pretty darn good, but it's not as nostalgic as the original, and doesn't fit in your pocket.
And if you like Game & Watch, there are quite a few Game & Watch titles available!
@NKR They're only re-releasing the EarthBound Player's Guide because that's how the game was originally released. They thought the game would be too confusing for American gamers, so they released the game in an oversized box with the Player's Guide instead of an instruction manual (although instructions are included in the first section of the book).
It's real terrible...not just likenesses, people are having their art stolen. I don't know if it's the same company or not, but they're making it harder and harder to fight back...you have to file a complaint with each and every image, and after a while, they just start ignoring you.
@Daniel36 I liked Castlevania II -before- this patch came out, but now that this patch exists, I don't play the vanilla US game anymore: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/1032/
We are playing it right now, and UGH the new controls are AWFUL now. The grid won't turn on, I can't snap to grid with the d-pad...trying to build anything is more effort than it's worth.
And trying to fix the controls, there are probably hundreds of settings to skim through to find anything...
This really makes me just want to play the 3DS version instead.
Edit: After playing a while, and changing various settings, the problem magically fixed itself. Delightful.
@Shadow_1106 Phantasy Star Online 2 came out in 2012, yes, but that game is not open world, it's more like the original PSO. Some missions allow up to 12 players at once, but you're still limited to parties of 4.

@VIIIAxel My copies of the novels are called "Ring" and "Spiral", but Dreamworks insisted on putting "Ringu" and "Rasen" all over the DVD artwork and promotional materials =/
Arrow did the same thing with their BluRay releases here in the west, but in the UK, they were released with their proper titles.
BTW, the Hollywood version of the series is called "THE Ring"
So I guess games like EarthBound Zero don't count?
@patbacknitro18 Actually... https://www.dankitchengames.com/ Dan Kitchen's Gold Rush, cancelled sequel to Keystone Kapers. Started in 1983, and probably not coming out this year, so it's pushing 39 years right now.

My least-favorite mainline game is Ocarina of Time. I had such high expectations for it, but instead, we got a proto-3D game with Navi.
Navi.
Second least favorite is Twilight Princess.
But I mean, even the worst Zelda game, to me, is still a pretty good game.
