I figured something was up when I released a cover of City Escape on YouTube and it didn't get flagged for copyright.
@Smithicus Playing songs live falls under different laws, at least in the US. As long as venues have an entertainment license, it's automatically covered. Otherwise if lawyers catch you performing covers without the license...
@Kamen-S That's now how it works, the contract was surely only for the one game, and using it in other games would breach that contract. I'm not sure how the contract would handle ports vs. remakes, but if they take an up-front fee instead of royalties, they're not going to get paid every time the original game gets sold.
Sega assumed they had the rights to the song, and Johnny assumed he had the rights, and unless someone deliberately destroyed the papers, it seems that nobody owns the rights (which might possibly put the songs into public domain?).
@cdubbed lol, there are some celebrities who share their royalty checks online, and they're much smaller than you would think.
@RupeeClock This exactly. Judging by 3HD2D, 4-6 on DS are about as good as it's going to get. Remakes would likely have the same divisive translations, with the addition of severely Nerfed gameplay.
@Tainaru Yeah, 3HD2D was a bit of a let-down, especially the second half. They took most of the gameplay out, the original was so much better. Or even the SFC/GBC remakes.
Now this is interesting, because when I heard the DQ3 re-re-re-re-remake described as "HD-2D", I imagined something just like this game: the game rendered in HD, but low-poly world with chunky pixels.
Instead we got an HD game, with an HD world, high-poly, high-resolution, but sprites for just monsters/NPCs (and if you play on a big TV and squint you can almost make out the pixels). I mean it's a really pretty game, but whatever the "HD-2D" gimmick was -supposed- to represent, it was not apparent to me.
@sevex Ope. I went into the secret menu, and it looks like the HDR was turned off already??? I wonder if a recent update disabled it. I loaded up a couple of the Shrek movies (lol) and they look so much better now. Hit the * and the HDR settings weren't there anymore, but they did have some new picture settings. Go figure.
@kiwisoup It's 240p And don't blow into your cartridges, it corrodes the pins. I play on a CRT all the time, but usually via composite video with stereo sound. RF has a nostalgia to it, but it really can be a headache sometimes.
@sevex Yeah, I saw that code, and another site that had the same code but "play" instead of "down", so I guess I'll see which one works. Got my fingers crossed, there were some people on Reddit who said it worked on some TVs but not all. One person said they had to mess with some HDMI options to get it to take.
And they did mention that it gets reset every time there's an update. So that's fun -_-
"GameShare has also been confirmed for DK Bananza, with users of Switch 1 consoles able to join the fun." I misread that as "GameShark" and raised an eyebrow... o_O
@sevex It is a Roku TV! I didn't think to check for a secret menu, thanks, I'll have to try that. They recently added an option to change contrast on HDR, setting it to "darkest" helps a tiny bit, but it's still not great. Never had an option to turn it off, so hopefully the secret menu has one.
I wish I could just turn HDR off on the TV itself. It says it "supports HDR" but really it just means anything on Disney+ is going to look like washed out garbage
@PinderSchloss Try to get the DS remakes, they're going to be better, and they have a lot more Toriyama art in them. Most likely the same English translations, though 4 was alright, but 5 had some really awful bits. Haven't started 6 yet.
Like everyone else said, this makes it easier for me to decide to get the Switch 1 release instead If I wanted a digital game, I'd skip the plastic and just buy the digital game.
Sounds like most of the changes are "We made the game even easier than it was before." Ope. I really ought to up the difficulty...
@LastFootnote Woof. Haven't gotten that far yet, but she was super zoomy fast in the GBC remake. It was tricky trying to land on the exact tile you wanted.
@-wc- A lot of eshops have that "purchased" issue, and sometimes I will buy a game for a friend if it's a really good deal. Fortunately for Nintendo we have Deku Deals.
I didn't get very far in the Switch game at all...I kept waiting for an update to add all of the missing features from New Leaf, and I'm not sure if that ever happened...kind of lost interest a while before the final patch dropped.
Apparently I need to play Amiibo Festival more. The main board game seems rather pointless, but the minigames we've unlocked so far have been pretty fun.
I mostly missed out on this game back in the day, and it's really weird to come back to. Seems like there's no way to play defensively? You can't block with shells or banana peels?
Also maybe there's just something wrong with my Wii, but there seems to be some input lag too, and I'm using wired OEM GC controllers, on a CRT via composite video.
Shoot, load times in TotK were already a huge improvement over the first game. But I found this to be a double-edge sword: in BotW, I didn't care to sit through load times, so more often than not I would continue riding my horse (and also you couldn't summon your horse back to a stable any time you wanted). So I found myself actually enjoying the environment and exploring a lot more.
TotK, I did a lot more fast travel, and that really destroyed a lot of the "magic" from the first game. Seemed like there was a lot less exploration and a lot more just zooming to the next destination.
@AmyTheBrawler Yeah, I lost interest in sending them off pretty quick. Some of them got to enjoy our local Japanese expo and they are now long gone, but a bunch of others got trapped between me and my then-GF, so whenever she actually charged her 3DS I'd get another huge shipment.
So now they all stay, and I'm sure if I still played I'd have some great, great, great grandchildren by now.
And yeah, Street Passes are quite rare these days. I should really look into getting Pretendo set up.
@AmyTheBrawler My residents are definitely tangling up the family trees...I stopped sending children off, and now I'm pretty sure I've got some married cousins and things like that. Whoops.
@N64-ROX A little of both. It really adds to the quirky vibe of the games, and there are numerous situations where the characters will say/sing each others' names, or catchphrases, or really anything your heart desires (as long as you don't try using words that are blacklisted). When you create a character, there are different sliders you can change to alter their voices, some of them are really hilarious.
Being anonymous is a wise decision; being a public game dev means you need to learn not to let other peoples' opinions affect you.
Everyone has their own opinion on what a game should be, and many are quite eager to let you know that your game does not meet their approval 100%, and what changes they would make, had they the ability to make their own games (and not in a "constructive criticism" way).
Well then! I just got the digital copy of this game for free from Epic Game Store a few weeks ago. I should probably download it and try it out in my Everdrive
@GravyThief I imagine PS3 on CRT is similar to the 360: early games were fine, but as HDTVs gained dominance, a lot of games were released with smaller fonts, and were difficult, if not impossible, to read on an SDTV.
@tblal I thought the combat was really slow too, but I knew what I was getting into before I bought the game. I wonder if it would've been a little better if I had known, before I beat the game, that you can Z-target to make your echoes attack things =)
MiiVerse was so good, all of those games feel so empty now without it.
I didn't care for it on the 3DS though, it took too long to load up so I didn't use it very often. And I don't recall any games having built-in integration like the WiiU did.
StreetPass was wonderful too...always seemed a shame that Switch took so many steps backwards. It just plays games. And you can stuff it in your pocket if you wear JNCOs.
@Greatluigi A lot of us do both. Both fields are incredibly similar, except ROM hacking usually requires a bit of reverse-engineering, which is half of the fun, really.
Maybe this has nothing to do with anything, but a couple weeks ago I uploaded a cover of City Escape (also from SA2) and YouTube didn't flag it for copyright...

lol, not true, the mobile ports of the original trilogy are quite awful. The Switch versions are probably the least-worst way to play them (3DS being the absolute worst), but you have to soft mod your Switch to install the sprite fix patch.

@Dogorilla lol, or just wait for I&II and then play them in the proper order =) ...even though they've already spoiled the heck out of the original plot twist...
@Dogorilla Oh, I'm still picking it up, but I might have to wait for a few more dollars to come in. I don't want to risk it going out of print, some of these games go awfully fast, and Dragon Quest is certainly the rule rather than the exception.
@LastFootnote They didn't really start doing that until later entries in the series. I know IX was REALLY big on it. Gave it a much different feeling from earlier games in the series...more like some kind of anthology story.
