Re: Sonic Adventure 2 'Live And Learn' Lawsuit Dismissed, Crush 40 Musician Issues Statement

Asaki

I figured something was up when I released a cover of City Escape on YouTube and it didn't get flagged for copyright.

@Smithicus Playing songs live falls under different laws, at least in the US. As long as venues have an entertainment license, it's automatically covered. Otherwise if lawyers catch you performing covers without the license...

@Kamen-S That's now how it works, the contract was surely only for the one game, and using it in other games would breach that contract. I'm not sure how the contract would handle ports vs. remakes, but if they take an up-front fee instead of royalties, they're not going to get paid every time the original game gets sold.
Sega assumed they had the rights to the song, and Johnny assumed he had the rights, and unless someone deliberately destroyed the papers, it seems that nobody owns the rights (which might possibly put the songs into public domain?).

@cdubbed lol, there are some celebrities who share their royalty checks online, and they're much smaller than you would think.

Re: Hands On: Forget The Name, Square Enix's New Action RPG Is A Lovely HD-2D Take On SNES-Era Zelda

Asaki

Now this is interesting, because when I heard the DQ3 re-re-re-re-remake described as "HD-2D", I imagined something just like this game: the game rendered in HD, but low-poly world with chunky pixels.

Instead we got an HD game, with an HD world, high-poly, high-resolution, but sprites for just monsters/NPCs (and if you play on a big TV and squint you can almost make out the pixels). I mean it's a really pretty game, but whatever the "HD-2D" gimmick was -supposed- to represent, it was not apparent to me.

Re: Switch 2's HDR Looking Washed Out On Your TV? Here's The Fix

Asaki

@sevex Ope. I went into the secret menu, and it looks like the HDR was turned off already??? I wonder if a recent update disabled it.
I loaded up a couple of the Shrek movies (lol) and they look so much better now. Hit the * and the HDR settings weren't there anymore, but they did have some new picture settings.
Go figure.

Re: Switch 2's HDR Looking Washed Out On Your TV? Here's The Fix

Asaki

@sevex Yeah, I saw that code, and another site that had the same code but "play" instead of "down", so I guess I'll see which one works.
Got my fingers crossed, there were some people on Reddit who said it worked on some TVs but not all. One person said they had to mess with some HDMI options to get it to take.

And they did mention that it gets reset every time there's an update. So that's fun -_-

Re: Switch 2's HDR Looking Washed Out On Your TV? Here's The Fix

Asaki

@sevex It is a Roku TV!
I didn't think to check for a secret menu, thanks, I'll have to try that.
They recently added an option to change contrast on HDR, setting it to "darkest" helps a tiny bit, but it's still not great. Never had an option to turn it off, so hopefully the secret menu has one.

Re: Talking Point: How Can The Next Animal Crossing Improve Crafting?

Asaki

@MrDocena Nailed it.

I didn't get very far in the Switch game at all...I kept waiting for an update to add all of the missing features from New Leaf, and I'm not sure if that ever happened...kind of lost interest a while before the final patch dropped.

Apparently I need to play Amiibo Festival more. The main board game seems rather pointless, but the minigames we've unlocked so far have been pretty fun.

Re: Random: Nintendo Nearly Parked Mario Kart: Double Dash's Dual-Driver Hook

Asaki

I mostly missed out on this game back in the day, and it's really weird to come back to. Seems like there's no way to play defensively? You can't block with shells or banana peels?

Also maybe there's just something wrong with my Wii, but there seems to be some input lag too, and I'm using wired OEM GC controllers, on a CRT via composite video.

Re: Video: Switch 2's "Faster" Load Times Showcased With Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

Asaki

Shoot, load times in TotK were already a huge improvement over the first game.
But I found this to be a double-edge sword: in BotW, I didn't care to sit through load times, so more often than not I would continue riding my horse (and also you couldn't summon your horse back to a stable any time you wanted).
So I found myself actually enjoying the environment and exploring a lot more.

TotK, I did a lot more fast travel, and that really destroyed a lot of the "magic" from the first game. Seemed like there was a lot less exploration and a lot more just zooming to the next destination.

Re: A New Tomodachi Life Game Is Coming To Switch Next Year

Asaki

@AmyTheBrawler Yeah, I lost interest in sending them off pretty quick. Some of them got to enjoy our local Japanese expo and they are now long gone, but a bunch of others got trapped between me and my then-GF, so whenever she actually charged her 3DS I'd get another huge shipment.

So now they all stay, and I'm sure if I still played I'd have some great, great, great grandchildren by now.

And yeah, Street Passes are quite rare these days. I should really look into getting Pretendo set up.

Re: A New Tomodachi Life Game Is Coming To Switch Next Year

Asaki

@N64-ROX A little of both.
It really adds to the quirky vibe of the games, and there are numerous situations where the characters will say/sing each others' names, or catchphrases, or really anything your heart desires (as long as you don't try using words that are blacklisted).
When you create a character, there are different sliders you can change to alter their voices, some of them are really hilarious.

Re: The Reason For Balatro Dev's Anonymity Is Pretty Straightforward, Actually

Asaki

Being anonymous is a wise decision; being a public game dev means you need to learn not to let other peoples' opinions affect you.

Everyone has their own opinion on what a game should be, and many are quite eager to let you know that your game does not meet their approval 100%, and what changes they would make, had they the ability to make their own games (and not in a "constructive criticism" way).

Re: Random: Someone's Tried To Fix Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom's Awful UI

Asaki

I thought the menu notebook worked just fine.

@tblal I thought the combat was really slow too, but I knew what I was getting into before I bought the game.
I wonder if it would've been a little better if I had known, before I beat the game, that you can Z-target to make your echoes attack things =)

Re: Opinion: Miiverse Was Fine, But Does Anybody Really Want It Back In 2025?

Asaki

MiiVerse was so good, all of those games feel so empty now without it.

I didn't care for it on the 3DS though, it took too long to load up so I didn't use it very often. And I don't recall any games having built-in integration like the WiiU did.

StreetPass was wonderful too...always seemed a shame that Switch took so many steps backwards. It just plays games. And you can stuff it in your pocket if you wear JNCOs.

Re: Best Dragon Quest Games Of All Time - Switch And Nintendo Systems

Asaki

"...while the HD-2D remake is on the horizon, you can't go wrong picking up the mobile port for cheap."

lol, not true, the mobile ports of the original trilogy are quite awful.
The Switch versions are probably the least-worst way to play them (3DS being the absolute worst), but you have to soft mod your Switch to install the sprite fix patch.

So glad the HD2Ds are coming out to redeem them.

Re: Feature: "I Was A Bit Nervous At First" - Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake Producer Talks Reimagining An RPG Classic

Asaki

Everyone's who's "boycotting" this game over the "censorship" had no intention of ever playing it in the first place. None of them are DQ fans. Probably not even JRPG fans. They're just looking for interactions.
Don't feed the trolls, just ignore them.

@Dogorilla lol, or just wait for I&II and then play them in the proper order =)
...even though they've already spoiled the heck out of the original plot twist...

Re: Dragon Quest HD-2D Remakes Include A "Surprise" If You Play In Chronological Order

Asaki

"Sorry we took out the surprise plot twist by releasing the trilogy in the wrong order. Hopefully we can make up for it by including a different surprise plot twist!"

@_@

@Coalescence I'm not usually taken in by "ooh, shiny new remake!" but I'm excited for these. I just hope the translations do the games justice, I'm rather love/hate with modern DQ in English (I do find charm in the original NES translations, but GBC really did them best).

I think I'm more excited for all the people who finally get to play these, because there's no way I can recommend the terrible ports that are currently for sale. Barf.

...people complaining about the price as if brand new console games haven't been ~$60 for decades now...
Besides, if one is that concerned about money, it's DRAGON QUEST. Keep the case and cart in good condition, and its value will go into the triple digits before you know it.

Re: Aspyr Is Remastering Yet Another Star Wars Game For Switch

Asaki

I remember this game being decent back in the day, but that was before we had games like LEGO Star Wars.
The Playstation version had terrible controls though, they fixed them in the Dreamcast port.

@AG_Awesome Yup, I couldn't finish that stage either. DC version was much more forgiving.
