Re: Poll: Are You Bothered By The Frame Rate In Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom?

Asaki

It's a little bit distracting, but not enough to quit playing. As others have said, it's not that the framerate drops low, it's that it's inconsistent. I mean 60 is a nice luxury, but a stable 30 would be fine too, most of us having grown up on N64.

But I've been playing Luigi's Mansion 2 (on the 3DS) lately, so I'm kind of used to framerate drops right now.

Re: Poll: Which Is Your Favourite Nintendo Game Cartridge Design?

Asaki

I don't know, but I do appreciate the top label. Very nice to be able to identify your games while in a case/drawer or on a shelf (unless you're lucky/rich enough to have cases for all of them).
I've seen used video game shops that will print out top labels for the N64 carts and tape them on.

Re: Atari 50: Expanded Edition Adds 2 New Timelines And 39 New Games

Asaki

@Teksetter Yeah, I bought the Mayflash so I could use my Wii U Pro Controller with the Switch, was a LOT cheaper than getting a Switch controller. It's pretty nice. Doesn't seem to support rumble, but that's the only negative thing I've found with it so far.

It might work with it, hard to say without looking it up. I've actually not tested the wired support yet.

Re: Atari 50: Expanded Edition Adds 2 New Timelines And 39 New Games

Asaki

@Teksetter The Genesis adapter plugs into the Wiimote, so you can use Genny/Atari controllers like a Classic Controller.
Then I have a Mayflash Magic-NS which lets you connect various wired/wireless controllers to the Switch, including Wiimotes. In -theory- it should work (provided the buttons can be remapped if necessary), but I imagine there will be some difficulties in navigating the menus.

Re: New Rumours About Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake Surface

Asaki

@KayFiOS Oops, forgot to reply to this.
There's only a few stops you have to make to chase the Prince down, but if you know where to go, you can skip most of them. I'm pretty sure, if you can make it there alive with just your starting equipment, you can go straight to the Spring, and then straight to Cannock.

Re: Talking Point: How Do You Define 'Retro'?

Asaki

Technically I don't really consider anything retro, because I never stopped playing it.
"When's the last time you saw THIS classic game?" "Like ten seconds ago."

But if I had to pin it down, for me, I'd say maybe the 16-bit gen and older (whatever gen that is...third? I don't know).
Like "Golden Age", maybe a bit of "Silver Age".

Re: New Rumours About Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake Surface

Asaki

@Kingy I have all of the DS games, and I'd hardly call the music "ear grating". But I only play them on the DS, I don't blast the music over my hi-fi system.

There's nothing baffling about it, it's simply a technological issue. Most PS2 games use DVDs, which can hold 4-9 gigabytes of data. By comparison, the DS ports are only 256 megabytes (one quarter of a gigabyte), so using a sample-based music format makes a lot more sense. If they had used a streaming format, they'd have to compress the music so heavily that it WOULD sound awful.

I don't know the story behind the 3DS games, but I would assume that they wanted to fit the games on smaller chips to save money, since the games don't sell as well in the West as they do in their homeland.

Re: New Rumours About Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake Surface

Asaki

It would be awesome if the rumor is true. It's difficult to recommend the first three games to newcomers, because the only versions that are still for sale (in English) are quite awful.
Unless you have a softmodded Switch to be able to patch the sprites back.

@Kingy "Awful"? o_O I've never played a DW or DQ that had "awful" music.

Re: Review: Wizardry: Proving Grounds Of The Mad Overlord (Switch) - A Grand Remake Of An Iconic Game

Asaki

Neat, I didn't know they had the console maps as options.

I was playing the GBC ports at work a while back, and they sure are brutal.
I really like the concept of losing your party, and then building a new party to go and attempt a rescue. You don't see that in other games.
After losing/building enough parties, I found myself mixing the best members from each team together for an even stronger party. Time consuming, sure, but also really satisfying.

I wonder if they're adding the thief backstab ability in. I thought that was a pretty useful QoL in the newer ports.

Re: Random: 3DS & Wii U Players Beat 14-Year-Old Halo 2 Server Record

Asaki

I tried doing this in Mario Kart 7, but everyone else zoomed right past the finish line, completing the race with me in last place -_-

From what I understand, once the matchmaking is complete, you're basically in a peer-to-peer mode...so technically not on the Nintendo Network anymore. But still impressive to hang in there like that.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (20th April)

Asaki

Dragon Quest V on the DS

Dragon Warrior II on the NES - with 2x GP/XP patch because YOWZERS that's a lot of grinding

LEGO City Undercover on the Wii U - I've been playing this one during the days because the kid likes to watch...and then he likes to steal the GamePad and not give it back >_<

Re: Quake-Powered FPS Wrath: Aeon Of Ruin Locks In New Switch Release Date

Asaki

@Chlocean Yup, trickery for the room-over-room, same with the underwater stuff. Basically you teleport to another area without noticing.
DOOM64 did something kind of similar for one of the levels, where a bridge is up or down depending on which way you come from.
Other advances Build engine had were sloped surfaces, colored lights, and being able to aim vertically.

Re: Industry Tributes Pour In As Fans Mourn Manga Legend Akira Toriyama

Asaki

So tragic, sounds like he died from something that could've been treated =(
I could never really get into DBZ, but I grew up on Dragon Warrior. Currently playing DQ5 and 9.
I did like what little I saw of the original Dragon Ball though, enough to buy a manga collection. Maybe I will sit down with it some time soon.

Re: Epic Mickey: Rebrushed Is A Switch Remake Of A Wii Favourite

Asaki

I tried playing this game last year I think...I really wanted to like it, because usually Warren Spector creates (or at least influences) some really great games, but it just felt like a poor-man's Rareware.
I ended up turning it off and playing Donkey Kong 64 instead.
Maybe I'll give it another shot some time.

Re: Video: Tomb Raider I-III Remastered - 13 Minutes Of Direct Switch Gameplay

Asaki

Oh! They added her ponytail to the first game! :0

@MasterGraveheart lol, they were post-Windows DOS games, so definitely a challenge to get working, especially on newer hardware.
Took me a bit to figure out how to get it working on my Win98 machine, especially when the sound card drivers decided to throw IRQ conflicts at me, but I eventually got it running great with the Voodoo 3. It only supports four joystick buttons though, so I had to use Joy2Key to bind the rest of them. Currently playing with my Retro-bit Genesis USB pad for a more Saturn-like experience.

@PineappleLake Good question, I was wondering the same.

Re: Plans Are Reportedly In Place To Celebrate Earthbound's 30th Anniversary

Asaki

"...we're way beyond anticipating any official Western release of its sequel, Mother 3."

Oh, I don't know, we never thought we'd see official releases of EarthBound Beginnings or Starfox 2, either...
To a lesser extent, never thought we'd see GoldenEye and other Rare games on the Switch.

@Kazman2007 But you -can- play it And if you have a flash cart or an emulator, you can play it in English.
You just can't purchase it from Nintendo.

Re: Soapbox: A Love Letter To My Favourite New Character In Zelda: TOTK

Asaki

"definitely not any NSFW content (yep we've all seen the tweets)"
The what now? o__O
I didn't see any tweets, I did a pretty good job of avoiding all spoilers until I finished the game.

AFAIK, the game doesn't keep track of your Addisons, so I have no idea how many I managed to find, but I did try to do as many as possible.
One near Death Mountain was a little annoying, as I passed him by to do a different quest, and when I came back he wouldn't respawn >__<

@NotTelevision Ugh, yes. As much as I enjoy 100%-ing a game, I think I did five of those Koroks and said "Nope, no more."
I didn't 100% them in BotW, and I am absolutely not doing them in TotK. I got enough seeds to max out all the slots I needed.

Re: Soapbox: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Straight Up Fails In Just One Respect: Accessibility

Asaki

@BTB20 Yes, ZL, half of the time it didn't work for me, and I kept my game up to date. Link would pull out his shield, but the camera wouldn't change. I don't remember if that was also an issue in BotW or not.

It's not impossible at all, you can use your thumb to hold onto the controller, it's just like playing a Sega Genesis. You just have to switch some of the fingers around if you're not using a WiiU controller, because Switch swapped the joystick location.
And I do have thumbs, but I only have two of them. The left thumb is always on the left stick, so that leaves me just one thumb for turning and pressing the face buttons. Using just one thumb, it is physically impossible the turn the camera, press jump, and/or press attack at the same time.

Re: Soapbox: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Straight Up Fails In Just One Respect: Accessibility

Asaki

I don't even have a physical hand disability, and it really bothers me that BotW and TotK didn't include a lot of options and features that had been in previous games.
I've been playing Mario Odyssey lately, and I love how it doesn't FORCE you to aim the camera with the right stick, and you can press L or R to center the camera. Ditto to Hyrule Warriors 2, the spinoff has better controls than the real deal =)
The new Zelda games, a lot of times I have to move the right stick with my ring finger, press face buttons with my pointer and middle finger, and hit R buttons with my pinky. It's not the most elegant solution, and I can't imagine that's "the specific way Nintendo wants me to feel", but you get used to it.
And TotK even has a loading screen tip that says that you can recenter the camera, but most of the time it doesn't work, and as far as I could tell, there was no rhyme or reason as to why sometimes it would work, and other times it would not.

Re: Review: Harvest Moon 64 - Rose-Tinted Specs Recommended For This Beloved Farm Sim

Asaki

I loved the SNES game, and 2 & 3 on the GBC, but I had some issues with the N64 game. I can't recall what they were, though...

I tried to like Friends of Mineral Town on the GBA, but they added SO MUCH more to do, and still only a few minutes to do it in, and they made it almost impossible to successfully date without using a walkthrough...I kind of gave up on it after a while =(

@TenEighty N64 games emulated with filtering on -can- look good, but in these screenshots it does not =) Playing these games on a real analogue CRT television really helped hide (or even enhanced) all of the flaws.

Re: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom's Master Sword Twist Was Decided Very Early On

Asaki

That whole story was quite emotional...I guess they decided the first game wasn't emotional enough and had to ramp it up a bit >__<
Once I figured out what was going to happen, I'm like "No. No way. No don't!"
I had to show all the memories to my GF.

@Ryu_Niiyama I didn't know there was a quest to make her fly lower. I did all the tears and never saw her until after that final tear.

And then, every time I tried finding one of the other dragons, it was ALWAYS her >__<

I couldn't figure out an easy way to get the dragons to appear...at least, to me, it didn't seem like there was any sort of predictable schedule like the first game had.

@Ricube I didn't figure it out until my 3yo said something. He was like "Land on the dragon!" and I said "I don't think--well...maybe!" and it worked.
I don't remember being able to land on them in the first game...but it has been a while.

Re: Hands On: Atari 50 Gets Even Better With Adventure II, Warbirds, And More

Asaki

@Loots Ditto. It's a great collection, and I love all the history, but I feel like maybe I should've bought it for Steam instead, so I could more easily play it with the correct controllers.

I did buy a USB 6-button Genesis controller so I could play BigPEmu a little more authentically B)

Third party would be cool, and they've done it before with the Flashback products...who knows?

Re: Best Nintendo Pinball Games

Asaki

Woo! Pinball Pulse is fantastic, the only fault I have with it is you have to swipe the touch screen to nudge. Not very intuitive at all.

Mario and Metroid Pinball are enjoyable enough for what they are, but they don't quite feel like real pinball. Metroid is too easy to finish though, and after that it doesn't feel like it has much replay value.

Loved Pin-Bot as a kid, even though it really creeped me out.

@Cheez There are some Zen Pinball games for 3DS, but I'm not a huge fan...they feel too sluggish for me, with sloppy physics. Maybe that's just me.
Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection is pretty good...nowhere near as nice as its big brother (The Pinball Arcade), but really nice to have on the 3DS, and you can't buy Williams tables in TPA anymore. It's super dark for some reason though, you have to turn your screen brightness all the way up.

@canaryfarmer Rare put out High Speed next. There was also a port of The Getaway for GameBoy, but I don't think that was Rare.

@Kilroy I could never get into the first Pokemon Pinball, but I really like the second one. I usually just play the Ruby table though.

Re: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Director (Sort Of) Explains What Happened To Sheikah Tech

Asaki

@Turbo857 Sheikah technology disappearing explains why the Sheikah Slate no longer exists, and Purah and Robbie had to put so much work into designing their own clone of it.
IIRC, they had already put a lot of work adding extra features to the Sheikah slate, didn't they?

Not sure what the towers have to do with Sheikah tech, since they work completely different. Just because it has blue light?

I did immediately think of that Guardian on top of the tech lab, though...I will have to take another look at it.
