Re: "The Flavour Tends To Get Lost" - Dragon Quest's Yuji Horii On English Translations

You could say that about Japanese, too, lol. In English you would say "Do you want to eat something?", while in Japanese they might just say "Eat?". And they drop pronouns left and right as if they were Spanish or one of the Slavic languages where the verb itself informs you about who and when. In that regard, Japanese is very simplistic and it's up to the listener to decode what the speaker meant.

@SaKo This doesn't happen often on the internet but here I am. I admit I was wrong. I went ahead and recorded my eyes while looking at the Virtual Boy screen on my Switch (without the goggles). Indeed, my eyes went apart, not closer together. My whole life has been a lie lol! Thank you for being persistent in correcting me, and my apologies for being "confidently wrong". While it's true I used the incorrect term (and kept doing the opposite movement with my eyes than I thought), it is possible to get the 3D image with the correct depth information (things appearing closer when they're in the foreground and vice versa) by – not crossing your eyes – but by doing the parallel eyes. Now that I know the difference, I tried actually crossing my eyes while looking at the screen and it feels near impossible! The two screens don't want to "lock in" together, haha.

@SaKo Have you tried looking at the Virtual Boy game on a Switch and cross your eyes? I am unable to do the wall-eye movement with my eyes, but when I cross them, the two images meet in the middle and merge into one, producing a 3D image with the correct depth. The left eye brings the left image slightly to the right, the right eye brings the right image slightly to the left.
But sure, I'm not an optometrist, I'm just speaking from my own experience.

[EDIT: I used the wrong term, but the correct method. You can view the correct 3D image, but not by crossing your eyes. Instead, you move your eyes apart from each other. For more details, see comments near the end where I have a heated discussion with lovely @SaKo ]

"Hmm, the problem with this is that by crossing your eyes, you'll be crossing the images into the wrong eye; so, the left screen intended for the left eye will be seen by your right eye and vice versa."

That's not true. The image will look 3D with the correct depth (not reversed) just like through the goggles, albeit very, very tiny. Your left eye will still see the left image. By crossing your eyes, you "merge" the left and right images into one. When they meet in the middle, the image appears to be three dimensional.

@beartown During the 3DS/Wii U era I didn't know anyone who'd own any of these consoles, except for people from online forums focused on Nintendo. The major electronic stores like MediaMarkt had 0 (zero) 3DS games on their shelves.
These days, even "normies" own Switches in Poland, and the Nintendo sections in stores can be as big as the PlayStation ones.
Sure, Nintendo was never entirely forgotten in Poland, but it was nowhere near the popularity levels we experience today.

@Dr_Corndog Oof, hard to say. Many people in their 40s or younger speak English on some level, but not all speak it fluently. When I was a kid, people would play games like Pokémon in English but skipping all the dialogue and getting stuck at some points because of the lack of understanding. There were unofficial translations made by fans, though. Not for official hardware, but you'd be hard pressed to find a kid who owned a real Game Boy in the 90s or early 2000s.

@Hwatt Just to clarify: MK World and DK Bananza only got Polish text, no audio. It's still great, though!
And yeah, like Beny said, all Sony first party games feature full Polish audio and text translation. So, naturally, it's fewer and fewer games because Sony releases fewer and fewer exclusives. 😆 But there are odd cases here and there that get the extra Polish (pardon the pun). I was surprised to learn that Monster Hunter Rise was one of them, even on Switch!
Nintendo was basically unknown in Poland some 10-15 years ago, but these days it's quite popular! Even "regular" people are getting Switches and the Nintendo game sections in electronics stores are often the same size as PlayStation's.

As a Pole, I can confirm that the quality of the Polish translation is absolutely outstanding! They went above and beyond with translating the names of the tracks and characters. Mind, this (together with DK Bananza) is the very first Nintendo game ever to be released in Polish, so they had to come up with the names of all the Mario characters. Some are really funny and creative. Great job!

Re: The First Review For Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake Is In

I bought the Game-Key card version because:

  • it was cheaper than digital,
  • it will "complete" the collection, since I have DQIII in a box.
If there was an upgrade path, I would've bought the Switch 1 version, but alas. 😔
I read somewhere that Nintendo should allow publishers to release "Install Cards" – slower cards, like the Switch 1 cards, that would install the game on your console, but still contain the game's data. I think that would be a much better solution than Game-Key Cards.

Re: Kirby Air Riders Direct #2: Every Announcement - How Would You Rate it?

xmkbest

I'm not sure about this game… Is there anything to look forward to for a person that's not into competitive multiplayer games? Is there truly as much content as people claim if you don't count customization options? The racing tracks look very simple and short. Looking at the gameplay footage can cause sensory overload – so much is happening so quickly that it's impossible for me to keep up and it's just one big chaos. Sakurai is a great guy, but I'm not sure about Kirby Air Riders. It feels too similar to Smash. Can he make a game without collectible PNG upgrades, lol?
I hope the reviews of the game won't be all 10/10 "because Sakurai" or because someone remembers playing the first iteration on GameCube.

Re: Opinion: NSO Subscribers Outside Key Markets Get Less, And Nintendo Should Fix That

@MrCarlos46 A Polish YouTuber, Michał Pisarski, talked to multiple people at Gamescom and heard from them that Nintendo plans to implement the Polish language to their console's UI (unclear if Switch 2 only or the OG as well), and some time later they will release first party games in Polish. This also follows earlier news of Nintendo hiring Polish speakers in Germany to translate software into Polish. So, even though the source for this is "trust me, bro", Pisarski swears on his reputation that what he heard is solid information and he cannot say more so that he doesn't cause problems for the people he talked to. He also hints at many big third-party games coming to Switch 2 but also can't say more than that.

Re: Opinion: NSO Subscribers Outside Key Markets Get Less, And Nintendo Should Fix That

Even within the main regions there's a divide. I can order the NSO controllers to Poland, but not from the Polish Nintendo* website. Instead, I have to order from a German or Irish site and pay in Euros, which is not the Polish currency. The prices are, however, in our local currency in the eShop. No local language support either, but there are strong rumors that the Switch will finally get the UI and maybe even some first party games in Polish as early as this calendar year.

  • Actually, it's the Polish Distributor's website, not truly an official Nintendo site.

Re: Review: Hollow Knight: Silksong - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition - Woven To Brutal Perfection

@Charlirnie That's great if it was just right (or easy) for you, but people are different, with different levels of skill and expectations. Imagine that for one of the boss fights you'd have to play Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E Minor. If you're a violin player – that's great, fun even! But if you've never held a violin before… well, git gud.
Now, if we had difficulty options, maybe you'd manage to play it on a guitar? If not even that, how about a Guitar Hero-style battle? In the end, both the violin player and plastic fake guitar player would have the same amount of challenge and fun, instead of the least skilled player having to practice 40 hours a day (iykyk) to maybe have a chance at the boss fight.

Re: Review: Hollow Knight: Silksong - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition - Woven To Brutal Perfection

@Aeralto Yeah, I wouldn't give a 10 to a game with no difficulty/accessibility options. I beat the original Hollow Knight, but I guess I don't have the same patience anymore. I gave up on Silksong after 2 hours. It runs great and it's satisfying to control, but I'm not looking forward to repeating the same stuff over and over again. I wish there was an easier difficulty option for those who just want to explore the world and enjoy the views. Yes, I've heard the argument that if the game was easier, you wouldn't experience the game as it was intended. But if I give up on it entirely, I won't experience it at all! I believe customers should be able to enjoy their purchases however they want and if I "break" the game by giving my character more health than it was intended, that's on me.
