Re: Review: Frogun Encore (Switch) - A Sure-Footed 3D Platforming Throwback

the_shpydar

I'm on the fences for this one. I liked the first game, despite the issues with the camera and controls, but i never finished it because it just seemed to drag on for too long, expecially since the format of every world was basically the same — 2-3 normal levels, a race level and the boss level. Just felt so repetitve after a while.

Re: Random: Have You Seen This Cute, Unreleased Precursor To The Top Loader NES?

So basically, Nintendo was considering doing something similar to what Atari had done a couple years prior — they had re-released the 2600 as the "Atari 2600 Jr", which was redesigned to resemble the newly released Atari 7800, and released it at a lesser/budget price point.

Although in Atari's case, the 7800 was already backward compatible with (most) 2600 games, and the Junior was being put out primarily to try and squeeze whatever money was still left in the marketplace for the classic system from those who may have been reluctant to buy a new unfamiliar console.

Re: Soapbox: Games Go Down Better When Paired With Books, Movies, And TV, Just Like Wine

I love LiS and all, but very disappointed your didn't pair Twin Peaks and Deadly Premonition. Aside from the dead beauty queen and Northwest US setting, LiS doesn't match up all that well. Whereas virtually every aspect of Deadly Premonition is Twin Peaks based/inspired/ripped-off.

Also, Alan Wake pairs perfectly with like half of Stephen King's oeuvre, particularly The Dark Half or Secret Window, Secret Garden (which are basically just alternate takes on the same premise and were both inspired by King's being "outed" as Richard Bachman).

Re: Naughty Metroidvania 'Wife Quest' Launches On Switch In March

the_shpydar

This is a good game, i just recently completed it on PC. A lot of fun and good humor throughout.

And it's not a "naughty" game; at worst there's perhaps some PG (maybe PG-13) level innuendo in the dialogue. However, for those who are familiar with action-platformer/metroidvania style H-games (for example, the Succubus series of games by LibraHeart), a lot of the gameplay mechanics and style are similar.

Certainly recommended for those who like fun action-platformers.

Re: Review: Contra: Rogue Corps - An Ugly And Unfocused Mess That Shames The Contra Name

the_shpydar

Played the demo and was genuinely shocked at how horrible it was in every way.

As a small nitpick, is calling this a "twin stick shooter" really accurate? Twin stick shooters typically refer to games where one stick is used to move, one used to shoot (e.g. Robotron, SmashTV, etc.). That's not what this game does — it's one stick to move, one stick to aim independently, and then the trigger button is used to shoot (not unlike the general control scheme for an FPS). You could conceivably not use the "aim-stick" at all and just shoot the direction you're moving.

I mean, i guess it's not wrong per se to call it a twin stick shooter, but it's not entirely accurate either.

Of course, i constantly see reviews on this site refer to 1 on 1 fighting games as "brawlers" which isn't accurate either, so ...
shrug

Re: 2D Arcade Brawler Fight'N Rage Will Beat Up Your Switch Next Week

the_shpydar

I have this on Steam and have played through it probably a half dozen times at least. There's 8 different endings, multiple paths, different cutscenes depending on what character you're playing as... it's totally worth playing multiple times. If you are a brawler/beat 'em up fan, you must own this game, I am Super Cereal.

Re: Billy Mitchell Threatens To Take Legal Action Against High-Score Sanctioning Bodies

the_shpydar

While Billy has always come across as a bit of an arrogant jerk (at least half of which is due to a combination of how he's been portrayed along with him leaning into the "wrestling heel" thing at times), i'm kinda on his side here.

It's good that Twin Galaxies has taken steps to clean up their record-keeping (the Todd Rogers thing was a huge deal in the community), TG has never been the same since Walter Day sold the site off, and will never really be what it once was again.

Re: Review: Doom 3 - A Dark, Unnerving Oddity In The Slayer Series That Still Impresses

the_shpydar

Cool. This review answered my one question, whether the Switch version was based on the BFG Version and included the "flashlight fix".

I played this on 360, and it is a good game, though i will echo the review's mention of how it doesn't feel so much like a "Doom" game, and more like just a good, action-horror FPS with a Doom-flavored coat of paint. Definitely worth picking up.

@KingMike
Luigi is in Wrecking Crew if you are Player 2 (taking alternating turns), although he doesn't look any different - actually the only way you know is it's even Luigi is the "LUIGI START!" instead of "MARIO START!" at the beginning of each level.

(And yes, you are right that Spike the Foreman is the antagonist in the game.)

Re: The Messenger's Free Tropical DLC Launches On 11th July

@BenAV
Funny, i was about to post the exact same thing — that i need to get back to playing this. I've actually made it pretty far through the game, but just when i thought the game was reaching the end ... well, no spoilers. Suffice it to say that i reached the second time in the game where it seems like the end is near, only to have it pull a 180.

It really is an amazing game; i'll probably try and get back to it once i finally finish up Yooka-Laylee (another game that i just recently got back to after only playing a bit quite some time ago), especially with the DLC coming out so soon.

Re: Solomon's Key Joins Hamster's Arcade Archives Series On The Nintendo Switch

the_shpydar

@Moroboshi876
I have the arcade version of Solomon on Wii; i'll probably still double-dip and grab this one (as i did with Rygar).

The NES version is one of my favorites, and the version i prefer, but the arcade version is very good (it feels a bit harder than the NES port, but that may just be me being used to the NES version). If you like the game in general, it's definitely worth getting.

NL's review of the Virtual Console Arcade release: https://www.nintendolife.com/reviews/2009/09/solomons_key_virtual_console

(Also recommended is Solomon's Club for the OG Game Boy; it's not quite a port, but not quite a sequel — there's levels in common, but also different levels and some different play mechanics like a Shop where you can buy temporary power-up items.)
