@Damo
+1000 points for the Douglas Adams reference in the tag. Particularly as i am now literally the answer to the ultimate question (having turned 42 last month).

The fact that this comment section is being left open is ridiculous. We've had racist comments, Nazi accusations, and just overall general user vs. user attacks.

I guess it gets the clicks though, so that's what counts, right? Forget the fact that this is supposed to be a family-friendly site, or that political commentary is supposedly verboten.

Cheers, my friend.

Re: Nintendo Apparently Told Square "Never Come Back" After Losing Final Fantasy VII To Sony

the_shpydar

@Damo
The problem is not that the quotes are wrong, but rather that the headline implies that those quotes were specifically said by someone at Nintendo, when that isn't the case. My first thought was that it must have been Yamauchi-san, because it sounds exactly like something he would have said. But no, these are not quotes from anyone at Nintendo at all.

Kawai-san's quote is stating how he interpreted the conversation, not that "Never come back" is specifically what Nintendo said. And the "We don't want you" quote from Maruyama-san is similarly his interpretation of how Nintendo felt about situations with publishers such as theirs at the time.

There's also the (lesser) problem that the quotes in the headline (and tagline), by being implied as actually coming from Nintendo, also come off as if they were exceedingly hostile; while Kawai-san's interpretation of their relationship with Ninty at the time may have been that it was hostile, Maruyama-san certainly did not feel that way (or at least he is being polite in his recollection of events).

In all fairness, NL is not the only place that goes with a misleading headline that either misrepresents or mischaracterizes the substance of an article (either intentionally or otherwise); i see it all the time everywhere from entertainment websites to the Associated Press newswire.

I do appreciate you responding, though. Cheers.

Re: Nickelodeon Allegedly Creating Animated Film For A Nintendo Series

Article posted as "News", not "Rumor".

Article title: "Nickelodeon Allegedly Creating Animated Film For A Nintendo Series".

Article text: "A podcast released on Nickelodeon's YouTube channel has been outed to be allegedly detailing a purported Nintendo property."

Source: Podcast not mentioning Nintendo at all.

Stellar journalism confirmed.

@TheRealThanos Aye, brother. But us "old timers" just can't help but sharing our knowledge and love of the almighty Atari. In fact, during my last visit to my local retro shop, i spent almost an hour educating the owner about the value of some of the rare Atari games he had and on how to spot certain high-value/in-demand variants.

Re: Antipole Gets the DX Treatment in Flip to 3DS and Wii U

I'll echo the comments of both @Klimbatize and @Phillip_J_Reed (because i agree and they are both awesome guys who share space in my brain).

This is a game i had a lot more fun with than i expected, and played it a lot more than i thought i would have going in. I'm on board for a remake, and i think the extra polish (both graphically and otherwise) should turn a very good game into a truly great game.

Also, i always choose to pronounce the title so that it rhymes with Sophocles's "Antigone". Because i'm cool like that.

Re: Woah Dave! May Become a Real NES Cartridge Release

@Phillip_J_Reed
Same here. I bought it when it went on sale, then i almost felt bad i didn't support them further by spending full price.

Amazingly addictive fun. I'd buy an NES cart version just on principle. But i'd really rather see it on the 2600 ... some of the Atari Age wizards could probably pull it off (though i imagine the music would have to take a hit); there is some remarkable programming-fu that can be pulled off on the 2600 by people with the know-how.

Hey Lydia!
I've been subbed to your channel for a while now (those vids of you playing Condemned were hilarious), so I thought i clicked on my YouTube bookmark when i saw your pic on the NL main page.
Cool to see you here!

Re: Coleco Wants to Bring Back Their Version of Donkey Kong

the_shpydar

ColecoVision on WiiU VC would be a perfect fit, since they could emulate the CV controller's keypad on the touchscreen (this would work equally well with Intellivision also).

One big hurdle is that a very large portion of CV's library (and most of the best games released for the system) were licensed arcade ports from other companies, so there would be the obvious legal difficulties.

Good thing i still have my CV in perfect working order (even if the controllers are rubbish )

Maul teaming up with Darth Talon against Krayt's Sith? I wonder how that would work, considering that Talon and Krayt's Sith weren't around until more than a century after Maul's time (although Krayt himself, aka former Jedi A'Sharaad Hett was around during Maul's time).

Re: Review: Mach Rider (3DS eShop)

I loved this game. I always used to imagine the in-game text exposition (there is more between each level of the main mode, if memory serves) being spoken by the guy who did the voice-over during the opening credits of Knight Rider.

Re: Soapbox: A Case For The Defence: Castlevania 64

Cool article. I'm actually in the middle of playing this for the first time right now (I'm up to the infamous dynamite/nitro part) and enjoying more than I expected. It certainly has its flaws, but I definitely agree that the atmosphere created by the game is great.

Re: Review: Life Force (3DS eShop / NES)

the_shpydar

Such a great game. I poured many hours into it back in the day, and will certainly grab it as soon as it comes to the US. And just in case anyone doesn't know and is having a rough go with it, you can use the almighty Konami Code to get 30 lives, a la Contra.

Re: Dallas Tech Company iLife Thinks Nintendo Stole Its Idea For Motion Control

the_shpydar

@SebCroc Thank you for your interest. In all honesty I'd rather not get into a long legal discussion — lawyerly stuff is what I do all day, and the last thing I want to do when I'm home for the night and reading my fave video game site is discuss legalities. Sorry. But I do appreciate the fact that you actually want to know more.

Just one quick legal point though: the timing of the suit is irrelevant — 7 or 8 years after the Wii was released? So what. There are statutes of limitations for lawsuits, and the fact that they exist doesn't mean that a suit needs to be filed right away. We have no idea what's gone on behind the scenes — iLife may have been trying to deal with Nintendo for years to work out a settlement and once that wasn't going to happen, iLife decided to file suit.

Sadly, I can't help but think if this exact same situation was happening but iLife was suing Sony or MS, then the same commenters on this site would be supporting iLife.

Facts are this — we don't know the full extent of this suit, its validity, or its likely outcome. iLife does appear at first blush to be something of a patent troll (though this term, more properly referred to as a "patent assertion entity", is being misused by many — it's correctly used to refer to companies who sit on owned patents to collect revenue, while creating no true products of their own), but we don't have all the facts.

Even if they are a "patent troll", if Ninty did infringe on patents that they hold, then iLife is entitled to restitution (so long as they are acting in good faith, which will of course be a large part of the argument in defense).

Meh, time to turn by brain back off and watch more Old School Raw.
