Don't just take our word for it — LEGO Marvel Super Heroes is far and away the best modern LEGO game, stamping others like LEGO City: Undercover and LEGO Builder's Journey into the dust. Wait, no, you totally should take our word for it, because we gave it a 9/10.
For those of you who missed out on the Wii U version, though, you can now give it a go on Nintendo Switch when it comes out on the 5th of October.
LEGO Marvel Super Heroes was helmed by Arthur Parsons as Game Director, whose love of Marvel comics came through strongly in a game that was both tongue-in-cheek about its references while being deeply affectionate towards, and knowledgeable about, its comic book roots. Parsons left Tt Games earlier this year, after 22 years with the company, leaving behind a legacy including the LEGO Star Wars games, the LEGO Harry Potter games, and the LEGO Batman games.
LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2, the slightly clunkier sequel, is already on the Switch, where you can buy it for £49.99 ($29.99), although it's currently on sale for £12.49 ($7.49) until the end of the day.

This first game was really good, just hope they fix some frame rate issues for the Switch edition
This is unironically the second best Marvel-based game of the 2010s behind Marvel's Spider-Man
It's super fanservicey for anyone even remotely into the Marvel comics continuity, approachable to those who only started with the MCU films and even just enjoyable as a game even if you aren't really a Marvel fan
Also you get to play as Stan Lee and he can turn into Hulk at will and websling like Spider-Man. It's beautiful
This was the first game I played on my Wii U and also one of the best! Really really great game with a ton of content and miles ahead of Avengers and the sequel.
Played it back on the ps3, and I can tell you right now its much better then the 2nd one, The world is just, more fun to play in.
Day one for me!
You have to buy this game, you can play as fan favourites like... Howard the Duck and... the Absorbing Man?
This has the biggest roster, but personally Marvel Avengers and others have better gameplay for me.
@Jackpaza0508 Everyone remembers Absorbing Man
Nick Nolte played him in that godawful Ang Lee Hulk movie where he chews on an electrical wire and becomes god
I still need to finish the 2nd one. Maybe ill go play that and check this out on switch when it launches.
Wish we’d just get the star wars collection. It was my fav even if it is dated. Plus it would hold some of us over until skywalker saga
Totally agree, it’s at least the best of the Lego Marvel games, and actually used the 2nd screen on the gamepad nicely, for a map and quick switching of characters. Feel like this is one case of the Switch port being a downgrade without it.
'the slightly clunkier sequel, is already on the Switch, where you can buy it for £49.99 ($29.99)'
Is that a mistake with the pricing or does it really cost more than double the price in the UK?
Wow, this was one of the games I got on the ps4 launch day. Great memories of playing this with my kids as they were just beginning to be able to game. Weird they're bring it over so late but hopefully people enjoy it. Now where's Skywalker Saga!!!
Am I going to buy a licensed kids game from 2013 in 2021? Yes, yes I am.
One of the few games I got the Platinum for on PS3. Jurassic Park slightly edges it as the best modern one though IMO.
Where is my LEGO City 2 you cowards?!
(LEGO Star Wars Collection? When is that happening?)
I think I have played the vast majority of LEGO video games on Nintendo systems. My personal favourite is Lego City Undercover but Marvel Super Heroes 1 runs it super close. Defo an insta-buy as a double dip. It's a shame more LEGO video games are not open world like these two and like LEGO Batman 2.
LEGO DC Super Villains was great as well (close to the MSH 1 & Undercover IMO) and I enjoyed re-visiting LEGO Harry Potter as its entire collection on the Switch. I wouldn't mind a similarly assembled LEGO Batman trilogy on the Switch.
I suspect Skywalker Saga will be the best one for me when it eventually comes out though!
I played this on the WIIU and it was full of glitches. I’m sure they’ve fixed it, but no thank you.
Definitely one of the better ones in recent memory. I’m all for bringing back more of the older LEGO games, they’re just such fun and easygoing experiences (especially with a bud). Would love to see the Indiana Jones games make the jump at some point (maybe in time for the new movie next year?), or the Batman trilogy.
Still stoked for Skywalker Saga, and I have to side with @Mauzuri that City Undercover tops the rest (my only gripe with that one being that it’s definitely meant to be a single player-only experience like it was on the Wii U).
@nessisonett Guess what movie I watched yesterday for the first time? Well if you guessed Tenet that would also be correct, but it was far superior to the 1 I meant. 😉 And no, not The Suicide Squad, that was Friday night, and also better, as was Birds of Prey and Shazam that I watched Saturday. For whatever reason my Roku TV has given me free HBO Max so I've been taking advantage of it until they fix it. Kinda wish they fixed it before I watched that movie yesterday afternoon, but I had to know. 😂 Only saving grace I can see is how it must have influenced the guy making the Tetsuo Iron Man movies. Guess 56 is too old to watch cult classics from the 70's. 😝
The Wii U version missed out on a dlc if I remember correctly. The character selection was incredibe even then!
@rjejr To be fair, it’s a very divisive movie 😂
I'm not a marvel fan but I might just get this because I crave a good Lego game, I haven't played one that I've loved since the Wii and DS era
Do we know how much it will be. Generally I say wait till a sale for lego games but I want this day one if it is like 30 bucks
@nessisonett I thought I would like it, I liked all the bad 70's movies that were midnight shows back in the 90's, but the first half was too slow to recommend it today. I'm not even sure all the stuff I was doing in the 90's could help that movie today. Worth a watch for what it is I suppose, nice early work for Lynch fans, like "Who's That Knocking on my Door" for Scorsese fans.
Love the proper open world Lego games, the best being City Undercover, followed by this, then Lego Batman 2, may wait for the game to drop in price a little, as it's bound to do at some point.
I just remember having to do a race on the S.H.I.E.L.D helicarrier and being particularly annoyed by it. Mostly because I lacked the skill, and even when it worked it glitches out...
But apart from that I would recommend it!
Would be a great portable game on Switch.
Nope, LEGO City Undercover and DC Supervillains are the best modern LEGO games
Surely they should be doing a Lego Mario game crossover to tie in with the actual Lego Mario??
Only LEGO games I've played are the two LEGO City Undercover games for Wii U (including the unstable Switch version) and 3DS. While I really liked both of them, if LEGO games are like those then I think I've played enough.
@Mauzuri Marvel is fine, but I agree that Undercover is the best Lego game by miiiiiiiiles. They nailed it top to bottom.
Whenever one of my friends would visit in the summer he'd always bring his Xbox and we'd play LMSH. We had so much fun in the open world flying around, fighting each other, and playing hide and seek. Great game.
Omigosh, it does fit the TMNT theme song! How could I have been so blind, playing the game for a dozen hours or so on Wii U without realizing!? 😅
Thus is another fun Wii U title released for Switch. I was pleased with all the classic Marvel characters and storylines represented, so even an odd person like me who read plenty of comics but barely watched the Marvel movies could still enjoy.
If I didn’t have so much on the backlog right now I would prob double dip.
Great, now that song is in my head... Lego's in a Red Suit, LEGO POWER.
Dc super villains would be my pick for best, but I haven’t played undercover so I might like that one better.
My youngest and I finished a few Lego games on the Wii U, Lego Marvel Super Heroes was one of them.
Currently working on Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 on the Switch!
I have the sequel but couldn’t get myself to finish it, is this one any easier to get into?
Not mentioned, but it's also an absolute love letter to the City of New York. It may not be geographically accurate, but it feels true.
Lego city undercover is better to me I didn't love this game all that much idk
I missed out on this game (unless you count the downgraded DS version I have) so I am excited for this.
Counterpoint: Lego City Undercover is the best Lego video game, period.
(Not even sure Lego Marvel is even in the top five, TBH, but LCU is #1.)
I hope it comes with the dlc that the wiiu missed out on. However I feel like this version will be worse that the Wii U version. The coop play was great as one person used game pad and one used tv. Yes that game was glitchy as hell but it was still fun. Going to split screen coop will definitely detract. Maybe at least have online coop.
I have so many good memories with this game, alone and with friends and family. Even today I can't believe just how much there is to do inside it's spacious world.
I never remember having a dull moment as I was immersed inside environments filled to the brim with both LEGO and Marvel charm. It's rampant exploration and free-for-all nature makes for an experience reminiscent of the GTA series. It'll be my go-to LEGO game until the day I die!
No. Nope. Sorry but Lego City Undercover is way better than this.
After Lego City, the New York setting in this game wasn't anywhere near as diverse and fun to explore, in spite of including such iconic landmarks as the X-Mansion or the Helicarrier. It felt like a lifeless set, like they didn't bother to add all the care and little touches that made Lego City feel alive.
Also, having superpowers from the get-go robbed the game of the careful sense of progression that Lego City Undercover had.
After that brilliant game, this is were Lego games begun their decline into soulless, progressively clumsier franchise peddling.
Doesn’t Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania come out October 5th…
@OorWullie it's genuinely double the price in the UK. I checked myself, because it seemed so ludicrous. No idea why!
@rjejr What movie are you guys talking about? By a weird coincidence, I had plans to watch Tetsuo the Iron man later tonight, haha.
@pinta_vodki Well I'm talking about Eraserhead, and I'm assuming they are too b/c it's their avatar. 😉
I'm still not sure if I've seen Iron Man, I saw the sequel Body Hammer way back when - completely blew my mind - and I always think it's the original so the 2 are confused in my head. I only found out yesterday they even made a 3rd but seeing as how it was 2010 I just can't imagine it's any good. Almost certainly better than Eraserhead though. 😂
@PSoneboi If by "issue" you mean bugs/glitches, I don't agree with your statement. I've played plenty of 3rd party games on Switch and the frequency of bugs is on par with most platforms.
Talking about Lego games in particular, they've always had occasional bugs on all platforms, such as scripted events not triggering, making it necessary for the player to restart the mission. Sadly, at some point they got noticeably sloppier and in their later games, the bugs became quite more frequent. A quick internet search of Lego game glitches should give you plenty of cases across all platforms.
In any case, while I could be mistaken, I don't think HammerGalladeBro's comment was about bugs, because they only mention the Lego City Undercover games. I haven't played the 3DS game, but the Wii U game is definitely among the most polished Lego games.
@PSoneboi Oh, I see. You were just using both this article and HammerGalladeBro's comment as a jumping point for a completely unrelated rant about how "the Switch is underpowered". Have your fun, then.
@PSoneboi As I said, have your completely unrelated and off-topic fun.
When will preorders go up?
I played the second one, and it was amazing!
I can’t wait for the first one!
