Splatoon 3 will likely be one of the biggest releases on Switch in 2022, with the IP being hugely popular in Japan in particular while also having a large and loyal fanbase globally. Nintendo will be going all-in on it, without doubt, most recently revealing new details in a Nintendo Direct.
Nintendo's social teams have now shared some rather nice screens on Twitter focused on what we saw in the Direct, starting with the Eeltail Alley stage.
Eeltail Alley is an old neighbourhood in the centre of Splatsville and has become a hangout spot for the town's youth. A footbridge extends over this three dimensional stage, making for some exhilarating Turf Wars!
The Crab Tank is a crab-shaped, multi-legged tank, equipped with a powerful, rapid-fire gun and a cannon that boasts a formidable blast radius. While it's possible to scuttle about in crab form, you'll get around faster if you transform into a ball.
Let us know what you think of Splatoon 3 so far!

Is there a story mode in Splatoon? I tried the demo which was fun but never explored it further...
Don't get me wrong, I love Splatoon, but I just don't understand how Nintendo have given us 3 Splatoons and still no new Mario Kart in the same time.
It's time Nintendo!
@tsim21 Because MarioKart 8DX is still selling millions.
This mech reminds me of Overwatch's Wrecking Ball and I love it.
I wish ARMS also get sequel like Splatoon.
That Direct trailer was inkredible, I'm really hyped for this game as I loved the first 2.
I'm gonna want to try out that crab tank as soon as I get my hands on this
@zander_dale Splatoon 1 and 2 both have story modes. Splatoon 2 also got a second single-player campaign called Octo Expansion (which is DLC but it's worth it IMO)
The crab ball gives me Bakugan vibes with the way it opens and rolls up into a ball. I wonder if it's a stage thing or a new Ranked mode where you have to get the crab ball to the other side kinda thing
Looks great. I’m ready
@Anti-Matter arms is good but don’t you like splatoon
@tsim21 they're different teams within Nintendo. The team that does Mario Kart does other things where as I think the Splatoon team does nothing else currently. Plus, as much as I want a new Mario Kart as I played 8 a ton on WiiU, it still seems to be selling so well it would be foolish of them to cut those sales short right now with a new one. Hopefully they're working on a new one and just making it bigger and better until MK8D sales start dropping enough to release it.
@Player_One
I prefer ARMS than Splatoon since i have interest with Cartoonish boxing games.
@tsim21
another Splatoon seems a bit of an odd decision to me.
Would have liked splatoon 3 on the next console. I still to finish octo expansion.
@Anti-Matter I also have interest in boxing but still like splatooon. It’s off the hook
@Kirbo100 That would be an interesting concept. I hadn't thought about new ranked modes.
I want Kate Gray to cover more crab news 🦀
Splatoon is this great vein of ideas that they keep mining. I don’t think we needed a second Splatoon on the Switch, but by golly galoshes am I glad we’re getting one.
The devs are clearly having an absolute blast going deeper into this wonderfully absurd world they’ve created, and I’m having an absolute blast being taken along for the ride.
So many new Nintendo IPs have come into existence only to sort of fizzle out (Dillon’s Rolling Western/Project Steam/etc.) so it’s fantastic they’re really taking this series that came out of nowhere and rolling with it like a giant mechanical crab.
@tsim21 They’ve made four Mario Karts since Splatoon 1: Mario Kart Arcade GP VR, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Mario Kart Tour, and Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit.
@tsim21 My money is on Mario Kart 9 being the launch title for Switch 2
@zander_dale yes there is a story mode.
I love this thing already.
As someone who lives for splatoon, i am so hyped for this game!
@tsim21 very good point. This does look fun tho. Splatoon is my favorite new IP from Nintendo. I’ll take it.
Just not for me anymore. Nintendo really likes the franchise though.
I adore Splatoon and I wish we could see this kind of freshness and creativity from Ninty in other genres. They used to dabble in all genres but now they seem to play it safe in just a select few. Boohoo
@Ogbert The team that does Splatoon is the same team that also makes each Animal Crossing game.
@Natsura There are different teams within Nintendo EAD/EPD, Splatoon did come out of the previous Animal Crossing team, I don't know if they did the latest one or if a new team took over? But then the teams will have people all moving between them anyway so it's realistically probably somewhat moot. The real reason is MK8D is still selling like crazy so why get one of their teams to make a new one and cut sales short?
I'll get this game for my children, they love Splatoon. I know I'll play it too, but all the games look extremely similar on the gameplay side. Maybe now the Single Player mode will feel more than a tutorial for the online modes.
@PBNightmare Maybe the crab is like Rainmaker where you can only use it for a minute or so before it self-destructs. I can't imagine the crab being a standard weapon or sub.
The only other thing I can think of is that it's a special kinda like the Inkjet or Baller
@TYRANACLES Not really. See post #20
@Kirbo100 Nah, I'm 100% certain the crab is a special based off the trailer and these images. The main give away it is a special is the glowing hair.
I'm about 90% sure it is going to replace the baller special too.
I'm so excited for some new ranked modes though. I hope there is something new and they don't do away with the other modes. That being said, we'll need to have all ranked modes active at all times. Rotations are really my only complaint about the Splatoon serious, otherwise it is in my top 3 favorite Nintendo franchises now.
@Kirbo100 I saw YouTube video that broke the whole trailer down, it seems the crab tank is actually a new special, along with the zipline thing, the trizooka, big bubbler and the new version of killer wail
@Skid I wouldn't be surprised at all if they stuck with the ranked mode rotation schedule. but i bet they will add a few new modes. it's possible an old one like clam blitz won't make the cut. I could see salmon run being replaced with something totally different..all the info so far has emphasized the splatlands' being this big open area. i think a survival mode could very well be part of this game
@Skid If they do make a new ranked mode, I hope it's not just another "take the thing to the enemy base" mode since we already have two of those.
All ranked modes should be available instead of rotation. Speaking of rotation, I actually wouldn't mind a map selection in lobbies where players can vote between 4 maps (3 + random) similar to how MK8D does with its lobbies
Would love a toy/model of that crab!
As you can see in these pictures, clearly one of the reasons why Nintendo moved on to Splatoon 3 is for that next-gen fashion design customization. I foresee lots of fashion brand crossovers ala ACNH.
Seeing that crab tank morph into a ball makes me wish Splatoon 3 would blur with Metroid Prime Hunters, where each player had a choice of morph ball-esque mechanics. You could simply swap it out with the normal squid form.
@Kirbo100 The only reason I see a Salmon mode staying is because of that cryptic Have a Great 2020/Save Our Salmons key art they tweeted. Either that, or it factors into the story mode (but now the Mammalians are also here, so what now?) Of course, 2020 wasn't so great. So the Splat3 reveal was pushed back.

@CharlieGirl True. There's also a crab in the new Kirby trailer. Has Kate been silent on that? Maybe there's a longform feature coming.
I'm getting reminded of that hamster hero from Overwatch...
@Spiders nah these are all spin offs and one just a port basically. Im looking for a full fledged brand new home console entry.
@TYRANACLES How so? Technically Donkey Kong Country is a spin-off, and if you think Donkey Kong ‘94 is a port, you haven’t played it.
I understand that Jungle Beat and Konga were gimmicky, and the Paon handheld games were, well, trash, but my point is the franchise can accommodate a lot of experimentation and obviously the “Country” platformers have run their course.
I’m just thinking it’s time for a brand new release for the switch, since that’s really the only Nintendo standalone console at the moment. I bought Mario kart 8 deluxe on here and it was nice but I’m ready for something new, that we’ve already played on the Wii U. The others are either toys or a game on the phone just doesn’t have the same feel as using a controller, same with arcade( tho a port of that would be fine, it’s not easily accessible)These releases are too bite sized for me.
As for the the donkey Kong country games along with 94, I would’ve considered new entries because each plays like a donkey Kong game and is on a home console. Beat and swing etc, are trips off the beaten path so more of a spin off I’d say.
