Nintendo has dropped a brand new trailer for Metroid Dread, and wowzers is it looking good.
The clip shows off some brand new gameplay footage, as Samus skates and dances around each murky area at lightning speeds. We also get a great look at some of the characters you'll meet along the way including what appears to be a Chozo, bigger enemies like a robot and scary, deep-sea fish, and even a shiny, modern, HD version of Kraid – a beast that series veterans will be all too familiar with.
Here's a closer look:
Chozo
The figure who attacked Samus appears to be a Chozo. The Chozo were a highly intelligent and technologically advanced species who believed their purpose to be that of bringing peace throughout the galaxy. Eventually, the Chozo civilization reached a breaking point, and living Chozo are now rarely seen.
The Chozo are known to be peaceful and mild mannered, but Galactic Federation records indicate the existence of “Chozo warriors.”
Kraid and Other Enemies
The trailer includes other notable scenes, too. For example, you can spot a giant monster that appears to be Kraid, a beast Samus has fought in previous games. You can also see robots created by the Chozo, as well as gigantic aquatic creatures.
Just like in previous games, there is a rich variety of enemies and bosses standing in Samus’ way. There are many different types of bosses, especially—key to victory against such enemies is to carefully observe their behaviors and create an appropriate attack plan.
Metroid Dread launches on 8th October and we can't wait to get stuck in. Has this new trailer got you feeling hyped for this latest Metroid adventure? Let us know down below.

Love that they're finally bringing Kraid back.
My goodness... I didn´t want to see more, I was already sold. But this trailer is too much! CAN´T WAIT!!
Could've maybe put a spoiler warning, but I suppose I would've eventually watched the trailer anyway.
This game looks better and better the more I see! Looking forward to playing it for sure.
Still can't really take in that Metroid isn't being ignored by Nintendo anymore. Looking forward to this.
That's gotta be the most hype trailer yet.
This is the most spectacular preview yet - the Chozo warrior could end up being the final boss, and Kraid's appearance (assuming it's Kraid) sure was surprising. The game's looking better the more they reveal.
Wow. that Samus standing all ballsy next to that Kraid that can't reach her while charging her arm cannon.
Oh my... this is like Super Metroid on x100000 crack!!! This looks INSANE!!!!!!!
OMG, This seems to be the best Metroid ever!
The hype is totally justified for this. Everything they show adds more and more substance to this game.
btw, I'm a bit... unsure about the direction the series is moving. It looks way more action packed than the first couple of metroids, just as action packed if not more than samus returns. I hope this doesn't turn into some sort of Contra.
Edit: is Samus a puppet of the Chozo? Is that the reason the E.M.M.I are chasing her?
Looking awesome
It seems incredible! One month and some days remaining...
I've lost count of the number of special abilities Samus has in the trailer, wow. I hope they show some sort of in-game guide.
@Stubborn_Monkey I think that Chozo is like a spirit fighting Samus to see if she is worthy to get a new power, maybe that power will be the key to she destroy the EMMIs. There's a scene that he bring her by the neck looking like he's killing her, maybe this time he stop and say it's enough and she proved herself
@Friendly It looks like a 2D Metroid Prime game in a way. I'll still keep an open mind even if it is more action based... the gameplay just looks so smooth and fluid, it's a joy to watch.
@RCGamer That makes no sense at all mate
Kraid is finally in 3D and it isn't Smash Bros? Neat!
Yass! Metro android here we go!
@BloodNinja @RCGamer
Actually, Zero Mission had something somewhat similar towards the end - after losing her suit, Zero Suit Samus has to undergo a trial from a Chozo statue to gain a new suit. But I think this Chozo is hostile towards Samus, the intention is to harm her; at least that's what I think.
@Friendly It feels to me more like the first 4 games would have been this action packed if this technology had been available at the time
Looking good! I cannot wait to enjoy this.
Looks interesting and I'm not even a big Metroid fan.
Wow! Really looking forward to playing this
@Friendly The action scenes are definitely heavier... though I do think from what we've seen of actual footage in treehouse, there's more of that claustrophobic spacing between such things than there was in Returns? Admittedly, things like the Nightmare or SA-X fight in Fusion feel like they had just as much craziness going on as the action scenes here to me so... I guess we'll see when it launches.
I didn’t watch it. I’ll wait for the game.
Sadly the Metroid games never clicked with me over the years Bbut have recently really got into Metroidvanias like the 2 Ori games and Yoku's Island Express so really hoping this might be the one to get me into the franchise.
Looks great, but I honestly think that the scenes they've shown would be even more impressive if it had actual 3D gameplay.
I never thought he would be back. This will be great. No Ridley or Mother Brain though please.
Thanks for spoiling that Kraid is in this game 😒
this game is looking better and better the more we see
Nintendo, you didn’t have to show more footage but it is fine that you did. You already got me sold for Metroid Dread since it was announced at E3
Okay, now we're cooking with gas! The first trailer/gamplay demos didn't realy get me that excited about running away from that white thing all the time. But this looks really interesting.
Looks amazing! This will be my first Metroid game so I’m really looking forward to this. Anyone else get Buzz Lightyear/Zerg vibes from the beginning of Toy Story 2 at the beginning of this trailer?
@Stubborn_Monkey Yeah, but that didn’t end in attempted murder. Zero Mission sent off a different vibe. This is probably a boss, not a trial.
This will sound like heresy and I certainly want Prime 4... but I really don't care too much about its delay as this feels like THE seminal Metroid of this generation.
@BloodNinja Yeah, according to the report, this confrontation is what causes Samus to lose her abilities at the beginning of the game this time (which would make this encounter something of an inversion of the trial in Zero Mission - that happened at the end of the game and gave her abilities). So yeah, this character will probably be the final boss or something close to that.
By the way, Samus gives this enemy's armour a dent on its right eye - I thougt it was a cool touch.
This will be my first Metroid game and I can’t wait!! This looks so good!
Hi! Love the site and articles. Can we PLEASE not spoil returning bosses in the titles of articles?
Anyone trying to stay blacked-out on Dread (such as myself), just learned that a certain cool boss was returning simply by scrolling through the homepage of Nintendo life & glancing at this article title.
In the future, changing the name of the returning boss to “new-look for a key antagonist” in the title or something to that effect would save us from spoilers.
Damn! And I just missed the pre-orders of the Special Edition and the amiibo figures (I'm hopeful they have some available when the game launches. Something similar happened when the last Smash Bros. amiibo came out).
Still getting the game regardless, though I'm avoiding trailers and everything past the E3 trailer. I want to experience a 2D Metroid fresh from the start, much like people who played Metroid and Super Metroid back on the day.
Holy hell this game looks insanely good!!! Period, that's all I have to say. I was already sold, this trailer only solidifies that position. I honestly don't care about any other games this year, just Dread
Hype train! Wow that trailer is a masterpiece!
Damn, this game looks cool as hell.
Well, now I know Kraid is in it. Thanks 😒
Awesome trailer. I can see why some are upset over some spoilers but this game gets better every time they release a new snippet. I’m officially going dark on Metroid. Next time I see, hear anything Metroid related is when I’m actually playing Metroid Dread.
This looks so awesome. It looks they've gone all in to make an incredible metroid experience. I was glad to see the speedbooster and shinespark make an appearance at 1:13-1:16 after their absence in Samus Returns.
Im not bothered about anything else other than a challenge. Samus Returns was far too easy to finish. I want something that is going to challenge my 2D gaming skills. It wouldn't hurt to be the size of Symphony of the Night either.
@Yodalovesu I immediately came here to say the same thing and then read the comments. Glad I’m not alone. I’m so heated right now.
@RadioHedgeFund
Samus Returns wasn't super easy to me, maybe I just suck. But Diggernaut alone took me many tries. I had many deaths, it seemed like the perfect balance of difficulty with lots of save points.
My favorite part about Metroid: Other M were the cinematics and dialogue and story-telling and all that... To me, it had a very Metal Gear Solid feel. It looks like they're integrating that brand of amazing here and it makes me so happy!
@EriXz I noticed that too! It was subtle but was just enough to make me tilt my head
I didn't want to watch the trailer either but since I'm so excited it was hard to avoid. This is the first video I've watched since the very first announcement trailer.
To me this trailer was such a waste of time. . . Because I have already decided that I’m buying the game! Seriously tho a really good trailer. . Hello October xxx
I didn't want to see more just to avoid any spoilers, as I want to come with as little 8nfo about the game as possible but I guess it's too late for that. Does anyone has notice how mercurysteam has manage to make Samus movements more feminine? Back then the only way to know Samus was female was to finish the game, now you kinda guess just by looking at her both in game sequences and the CGI movie. It's a subtle touch but I love it. Clearly a labor of love 💕
I'm extremely impressed by the restraint Nintendo had to use with the previous trailers. They really did a great job impressing with those first trailers, but seeing this now we can see how much they waited to show us. Excellent way to build hype, rather than showing all your cards up front.
OMG a evil Chozo and yay Kraid is finaly back, i can't wait to finaly this amazing game in my extended battery Switch, octobre can't come sooner enough.
@Realness I know, super annoying, right? I wake up and aimlessly scrolled through the new headlines on Nintendolife, only to have a big spoiler for my most anticipated game of the year smack me right in the face. Nice way to start the day. (ps. awesome profile pic!)
@danondorf handled the same feeling with a bit more tact than me, bravo.
Wow this just keeps getting better
I am so ready for it
@Danondorf Yup. Well said. I visit this site daily, multiple times and right when the page came up this morning, BAM! Right in the face. Wildly disappointed
Looks absolutely incredible! I will be picking it up day one.
I'm a huge fan of the series, Super Metroid is still my favorite game of all time. And to people who have never played a Metroid game before I highly recommend playing Super Metroid, it's available on the Switch via the Switch online membership.
@Matroska We're living in the most prosperous time to be a fan of Metroid-vania type games, thanks due to the popularity of indie games introducing many people to this style of gameplay.
Nintendo is already revving up the marketing campaign for this game and I have no doubt because of the popularity of already mentioned Metroid-vania games, that Metroid Dread will sell better than any other previous 2D Metroid game. We'd even be lucky if we could reach Metroid NES sales levels.
@Friendly What are you smoking that you think the series has turned into a Contra game all of a sudden?
There's nothing I see that makes me think this series turned into some linear bullet-hell shooter.
Fantastic trailer! Right up there with the BotW Switch trailer as a masterpiece.
Couple of things stood out to me…Samus’ attitude and emotion is conveyed with no dialog. Charging her beam by “Kraid” as he’s restrained…overwhelmed at the end and reaching out her hand, almost asking for mercy or saying “enough, I can’t take this anymore”. We’ve haven’t seen Samus truly overpowered like that since Super.
Finally, her eyes at the end…to me (and I’m probably way wrong here) it looks like when they reopen, they’re child’s eyes…bigger, rounder…and maybe it’s a Chozo POV that in that moment recognizes Samus as the child they raised all those years ago and it relents in its attack, granting Samus her new suit that’s in all the artwork. I dunno. Fun speculating though.
This is the trailer that's finally got me hyped for the game. I wasn't too impressed with what I'd seen so far but this was really great. I can't wait now.
That Chozo emperor looks amazing, so does Kraid. I haven't pre-ordered the game yet, but I will be there day one no doubt!
I don't normally complain about spoilers, but I would've really appreciated if you hadn't put spoilers right in the title and thumbnail. Kraid being in the game would've been a really fun surprise to discover on my own. I understand that this is a Nintendo news site, but you could've just had the title state that there was a new trailer released, and include details in the article itself. Although it's up for debate if things shown off in trailers should REALLY be considered spoilers, I personally feel that many recent trailers reveal too much about the games, especially with a game like this, where a major part of the appeal is the discovery and exploration. I didn't read the article or watch the trailer, but if the reactions I've heard are anything to go by, this game seems to be shaping up to be a great game. I can only hope it finds a way to balance the amazing exploration and atmosphere of Super Metroid, with the stealth elements of Metroid Fusion.
Need this game in my life.
This looks better everytime a new trailer comes out. A Nintendo classic for sure, the art style looks fantastic 👌 can't wait for October.
The Nintendo stock value should get a boost when this releases. Probably the most anticipated game releasing since AC:NH.
I need a clean pair of shorts.
I do not think this will be my favorite Metroid game, but definitely could see this game becoming my favorite classic Metroid game. Metroid 5 is sitting on a lore stockpile, probably the most a new Metroid game has had going in, and if they dive into that this will be more than an amazing game it will be a special game. Mentioning Kraid being in the new trailer is a huge spoiler, that's the only problem I have with how this trailer was covered here. The trailer itself 10/10. I'm looking forward to making full use of the Switch's media features to take plenty of screenshots of what looks to be a very impressive game.
I have a feeling that Kraid is the tip of the iceberg. People p*ssed about his reveal are probably jumping the gun a bit.
Looks amazing.
As already commented by some, seriously unimpressed with Nintendo Life spoiling Kraid’s appearance in the game. Not everyone is watching the trailers; I myself haven’t watched any since the E3 reveal as I felt I could wait till Oct and go in blank.
Honestly wondering if I should just avoid the site until release now if every little thing on every trailer is going to be plastered in the article title.
Drops on the floor
Wow. That was INTENSE. I just finished Zero Mission last night, so the call back to that Chozo wall art/hieroglyphics scene hits hard. And obviously, so cool to see Kraid be brought back and looking even more fierce and gross than before. I thought the EMMIs were what would sell the 'Dread' of it all, but the tension between that Super Chozo and Samus as it builds throughout the trailer as she's eventually overcome — ending on that heavy version of the main title theme. Whew. Just incredible.
Oh cool, Kraid's back.
I sure am glad I found out about it here instead of you know... When I actually play the game.
Spoilers? Come on folks, do you really think Nintendo would release a trailer that contains spoilers?
@Stubborn_Monkey It’s clearly the Chozo villain seen in the secret ending of Samus Returns. When the trailer shifts over to hieroglyphics you see him ordering the murder of the Chozo scientists who made the Metroids on SR388, just like he did in that ending cut scene. I’m so glad they are revisiting that and not just leaving it hanging like they’ve done with other secret endings in Metroid games.
@Poodlestargenerica
I would say no. And calling a Metroid game Metroidvania seems silly somehow. 🤔
@russell-marlow that’s not what i’m saying. What are you smoking?
I am saying i HOPE the SERIES will not turn into a contra.
Samus Returns was too action packed for my liking. I prefer the puzzle / getting lost aspect of metroidvanias.
I really hope this is at least as long as hollow knight. That game was $20 & is the gold standard, so it'd be sad it if out Metroidvania's Metroid, which will be a $60 game. The 3ds version was extremely short (tho it at least had stereoscopic 3d to justify the full price 3ds game, imo) & i don't care to replay games, so i may buy this used, or rent it, if it's short. It looks great in this video, but i have been rather unimpressed until now (due to the color palette & the fact it looks like a reskinned shadow complex). This gets my hopes up, but if i get burned, It'll be the last time.
@Steel76 as long as it's not only a 4 hour long game like Samus Returns, i think it will definitely sell well.
@Friendly @thesilverbrick i feel the same almost. i don't mind if it has tons of action, but I'll be pissed if it replaces the exploration with action. If it just adds on extra combat, but still has tons of exploring, that's fine, imo. If it's a 4 hour game that's all action, I'll have to pass. Sadly, that means i won't preorder like i would if i trusted their judgement.
Is it October 8th yet? I want my copy of this game right now. The hype is awesome!
Super hyped for this game.
But still hope there will be more natural envirement added tot the game like in super metroud instead of levels in a spaceships.
There are way too many of meyroud games in this setting.
Still i think this will be a classic
So awesome. They've been killing it with these trailers and Dread reports.
YEEEEESSSSSSSSSS, finally Kraid can finally return in a modern Metroid game ever since 2004!
But also oh no! It looks like Kraid got captured by the Feds!
Those eyebrows thou!
"You will say, wow"
That looked amazing...
Value increased from $40 to $50 now. Almost a $60 game.
To be honest, it all gets very spoilerific now. Next report will be about the Chozo, I probably shouldn't read/watch that. They are spoiling the entire game!
I turned off the trailer because enemy Chozo and Kraid was too much spoilers for me.
It's like that EA ad for Jedi Fallen Order which spoiled Darth Vader which pissed off the devs.
It’s still made by Mercury Steam and I’m guessing uses the analogue stick to control? In which case I’ll be keeping my expectations in check. It looks good, but so did Samus Returns and that was not an enjoyable 2D Metroid game.
@Friendly Literally never in a Metroid game has it even remotely played like Contra.
-no limited lives
-no one hit kills
-no temporary power ups
-no constant waves of enemies always jumping out at you
-no super tough boss fights
Almost every Metroid game has action in it, that's why you have beam upgrades and missiles in the first place. You stockpile so much of them that you barely get to use half of them towards the end of the game. It's such a close-minded thing to suggest that every Metroid game needs to be a certain way in order to not tip the balance of how much content is offered.
I honestly wish the Metroid games had more action because how easy most of them are to beat. It would be more bang for your buck, especially nowadays when games have more depth to them instead of being more simply designed.
I don't know if you're playing the same franchise, but it sounds like you'd be more comfortable playing those indie puzzle platformer games instead because they don't have any unnecessary action.
This is easily the best trailer yet. Wowza
They could have at least shown a gameplay stream of this game at Gamescom :/
Anyway it's looking fascinatingly stylized too
Removed - unconstructive
Meta kraid!!!! Yess
@Boldfoxrd I want to see Ridley and Mother Brain. I would like to see a new version though, like how Mother Brain evolved from a brain in a jar.
This looks like a GOTY contender.
@Friendly If it means anything, they already teased a map that seemed very expansive and seemed to be a call-back to the kind of world design found in Super Metroid.... even teasing potential nonlinear progression as a result.
@Ludovsky sounds great! Looking forward to it even more
@russell-marlow why so passive aggressive mate?
I’m saying I hope it WILL not turn into some SORT of Contra. Never ever said it is contra already.
It’s mainly the speed aspect I think, you can’t deny that Super Metroid feels way different in that regard than samus returns and in this new entry you seem to be able to slide, phase in/out, move very fast all over the place.
It may also be the combination of wave beam, spazer beam and burst beam. A trillion shots in 1 milisecond IS very Contra-y.
And I am actually one of the probably few that does not like the pulse scan. It just removes the ‘what’s behind this door?’ aspect for me.
Draygon, please
@Friendly However you phrase it, you sound very picky with what you're saying. Even if you compare it to games like Super Metroid, you're coming off as having a rose-tinted glasses outlook on the old games.
The director of the series, who's been making 2D Metroid games since Super Metroid, has added new mechanics to the game to make it more fun to traverse and because there needs to be some new gameplay mechanics because he can't just copy and paste Super Metroid over again, there needs to be some minor new things.
If you see that as some issue... well I don't know what else to say, your weird pessimism speaks for itself.
My second pre-order ever in my life.
Looks fantastic, definitely getting it day one alongside the OLED.
@russell-marlow whatever. Call it ‘weird pessimism’ all you want: You can have your opinion and I can have mine. And I don’t like the later game as much as the earlier game. We’ll see where this one fits on that metric once it comes out.
So ready to play this game!!!!
Is this a ps1 game? /s
@weisske These doesn't look like PS1 graphics.
@Friendly
Every ability they've shown off seems to be used both in combat and in exploration. I'd say this looks Metroidvania to its core, not Contra-ish in the slightest…
Regarding Pulse Scan, I'd argue that it's a more limited version of the X-Ray Scope from Super Metroid, since it runs on your precious Aion meter.
Wasn't sold before (well, would have bought it still ), but this trailer was just terrific and showing off way more ambition than I expected for this title. Cool
With all the HYPE and lack of Amiibos(SCALPERS) this ruin the fun of this game. So where are the Amiibos??????
@Specter_of-the_OLED
On the internet /s or /sarcasm means being sarcastic. I know they're not ps1 or anything close to it but I'm making fun of the idiots who like to complain that all nintendo games supposedly look like they have ps1 graphics
