Yesterday LEGO was teasing its next Nintendo tie-in, confirming it'd be a big ol' '?' Block. It's now been fully unveiled in the trailer above, and as you can see it unfolds for a Super Mario 64 theme; it looks set to release on 1st October.
It looks rather neat, but you'll need to save your pennies; the official listing shows us a price of £159.99 / $169.99.
It'll have various interactive elements, of course, and will utilise the previous starter set figures too; some official details are below.
- Includes 10 LEGO® Super Mario™ microfigures: Mario, Yoshi, Princess Peach, and King Bob-omb, as well as a Chain Chomp, Big Bully, Mr. I, Lakitu, penguin and baby penguin.
- The ? Block measures over 7 in. (18cm) high, wide and deep, and opens to reveal 4 detailed Super Mario 64™ levels: Peach’s Castle, Bob-omb Battlefield, Cool, Cool Mountain and Lethal Lava Trouble.
- For interactive play, add the LEGO® Mario™ or LEGO® Luigi™ figure from the 71360/71387 Starter Courses (sold separately) and collect 10 hidden Power Stars to reveal secret reactions and more.
- This collectible, 2,064-piece LEGO® building set makes a cool birthday present, holiday gift or surprise treat for fans of Super Mario 64™, gamers and lovers of all things retro.

As previously reported, the LEGO Super Mario series has been a huge success for the Danish company and Nintendo. While Mario is still the focus, loads of us dreaming about collaborations with other franchises - ahem, The Legend of Zelda, for example - can perhaps have a little optimism.
Let us know what you think of this '?' Block and its Super Mario 64 theme; are you planning to splash out on it?

Just seen this - insane. I want it but £160? No way I can justify that unfortunately
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING. I have been wanting a Lego Mario set like this for literal years!
£160 is a horribly large amount for what it is, was gonna pick it up when i head to the lego store but not for that price
Princess Peach had too many polygons in Super Mario 64, so I’m glad they’ve addressed this.
I haven't really liked any of the Mario lego sets so far as the figures don't look like Lego and the layouts all seem to be long thin dull pathways...
Now this looks great, but that's an insane amount of money.
Man I forgot just how blocky the graphics were in Super Mario 64 lol
Would love this. Looks great just too expensive for me, I can part with 100
Mario 64?
Mario £164 more like.
I'm surprised at how accurate the level dioramas are! That's a really cute set and I'd probably get it if it wasn't that expensive.
Looking good, Princess Peach.
Outrageous price!!! Even at £50 I'd be hard pushed to get it.
AAAAHHHHHH I NEED IT!!!!!!!!!!!
Obviously not the target audience here, but I find these Mario LEGO sets to be kind of ugly.
“Lethal Lava Trouble”? Is it not Lethal Lava Land?
Lethal Lava TROUBLE?
Ok Lego. You can have some money.
Wow, that is very cool, I might have to cave and get this for my Birthday & Christmas present from the wife
Um. Honestly I’m kinda stumped. I think the concept of level dioramas is good but the scale just seems too small where there is no real detail. I’d rather pay £164 for a single more detailed diorama of Peach’s castle and the grounds.
i dont get these sets. they dont look that great. i mean, who sits with these things and plays with them for hours? kids to be sure. but at 160 quid? Guess its a collectors thing
Lego Mario is getting milkedd out....
If Lego had been as expensive when I was a kid as it is today, I would have had a very different childhood. Lego today is mind-blowing with its prices.
It may be expensive, but that thing is gonna be mine at launch no doubt.
Um, this is cool, but SM64 is one of the few Mario games that DOESN’T have ? Blocks..
Far cooler than the NES imo. Still a hard sell for me.
Way to expensive for me.
Wow!
It’s also a good price considering the price per brick, pretty good for LEGO at least…
(I find them all pretty expensive but sometimes I take the plunge!)
How to sell a small set of dioramas for $170? Add a huge buildable container that doesn't add anything beyond being a cute gimmick.
Either LEGO is really bad at tailoring sets for adult collectors or they're offering incredibly overpriced sets on purpose to see what will stick.
Calling them mini figures is a big stretch
I do agree that the ? container feels a bit pointless, almost anyone who gets the set is getting it to show off the courses (which imo look great). But the RRP is pretty par for the Lego course. A 2000 piece branded set? They could've charged more and people would've still bought it (Star Wars is generally where they jack up prices the most). Not saying it isn't expensive, but it isn't out of the ordinary in the slightest.
@HamatoYoshi Agreed... I thought for a second they were finally doing traditional minifigures...
You've managed to make my jaw drop. Cheapeau.
Giggidy giggidy gig gig goo!!!
That is really, really cool. But like others have said, that is a hefty price to pay. You can practically get a Switch Lite for the same price.
So they went from too big and simplistic to too small and simplistic. What was wrong with just a 3D Mario level with Lego sized characters?
I am honestly surprised this is just 170€. With 2064 pieces and a license i would have expected this to be north of 200€.
Looks like a really cool set. But i have no interest in buying this.
The price is likely so high because of the giant ? block unique to this set. I could do without the block, and go for the mini dioramas alone.
Lego sets are generally priced at about ten cents a piece. So this set is pretty in line, if not actually a bit cheaper, than many of their similar sized sets. just sayin. Lego is an expensive hobby...I know all too well. 😬
@Dr_Corndog The price is high because it's a licensed, 2064 piece set aimed at adult collectors. Sure if you didn't have the block structure that would take a chunk of the price off, and you'd loose half the novelty, but there aren't unique pieces or anything for the block bumping the price up, this is just what these sets cost.
@Dr_Corndog
Me too. I'd rather just have the levels at display, not a giant ?-block.
Day 1 purchase! 😍
This is obviously aimed at a mature audience. Those who have a job and the disposable income to spend on a collectible like this.
This and the NES console are really cool and inventive stuff. 👌🏻🐸
This is genuinely amazing.
I like this better than the other sets.
I hate the minifigs though. Why can't Nintendo simply make normal Lego sets?
I’m impressed with those smooth, smooth mechanics 🤤
It's cool but because they just had to go with the most recognisable ?-block design, they overlooked the !-block design featured in Super Mario 64.
Lego Metroid please!
What is that gnome with a moustache? Was it really that expensive to print a mario moustache on a regular minifig head and put a red hat on that? tssss.
I like the miniature lands, would buy them separately.
@Patendo It's over 2000 pieces, with normal piece price it would've been between €150-200, it's €169 which absolutely fits the price.
On topic; this is the first Lego / Nintendo set I'm actually interested in. The NES was too big / expensive (for me), and I really don't like the Mario sets.
@Mando44646 Nintendo doesn't make Lego sets. Lego makes Nintendo Lego sets. This is created and designed by Lego and licensed by Nintendo.
@hakjie11 Well it's Lego. Wait until the set is released, download the build guide and make the lands yourself (if you have the required pieces)
8 year old me would love this.
Cute, but not 170 cute
@sanderev lego is overpriced no matter how you justify 2000pieces tiny of plastic for £169. For me, it is very overpriced for what it is but you crack on if you feel its value for money 👍
The fact it comes with a LEGO penguin that you can throw accross the room makes it the greatest LEGO set ever!
I am so getting this
I love the idea and from my favourite Mario game but yes the price is interesting. Will it drop with some cool deal happen? Have to keep an eye out for this! 👍🤔
Goodness, that's impressive. Too out of my price range, but still very nice to look at.
yknow you got iconic character design when you can identify them in just 2 lego blocks lol
As great as this is, for £160 when all I'd do is leave it on display (and probably closed up so it's not gathering dust) I just can't justify it. Interested to see them go further into the series and make Sunshine and Galaxy editions though. And if they start making Zelda sets, I may be persuaded.
Ye gods, "Lethal Lava Land" is the name of the trope!
They even lost the alliteration - Lethal Lava Trouble is like hearing Troy Mclure mention "Birds: Our Fine Feathered Colleagues".
I like LEGO, and I liked Super Mario 64 back in the day. This will be a pass for me though (especially at that price).
I love Nintendo and Lego. This is expensive no matter how you dress it up. Was actually considering it until I realised I'd read 'microfigures' as 'minifigures' and saw them in the video. Calling them figures is a liberty - if this set actually had minifigures I'd probably have taken the hit and bought it. The microfigures absolutely suck, though.
@Patendo It's not just pieces of plastic. It's an entire ecosystem of interconnectable pieces. It takes a lot of R&D to design sets, and then to create instructions for anyone to follow. It's even completely designed to be 100% child safe. That takes a lot of effort.
Also Lego has one of the best customer service. If you miss any pieces in a set they will ship them to you for free, no questions asked. Also you can buy pieces to extend a set and you can design your own stuff with it as well.
Sure it's expensive. But it's not overpriced. Not at all.
And yes, it's value for the money. It's an entire experience to build these bigger sets. Especially if they have unique functions, like this. I'm guessing the ?-block will have a core of technic Lego to make the functions work.
@B4L0R_CLUB I would also like to see minifigs but the set would have to be at least twice as big to be on scale with them and twice the price with it.
Of course you could just make Peach’s castle without the other scenes or the ? Block, but I don’t know, personally I wouldn’t be as excited by that. I’d just be waiting for Hyrule Castle if I’m going to get any regular sized Nintendo castle set.
Considering Super Mario 64 was one of my first ever forays into the wonderful world of video games, I really want this.
@Mew IKR?!! It totally should have been one of the ! Blocks.
@sanderev oh I know how much goes into them but that doesn't change the fscr lego is overpriced! There are plenty of other comments saying that its expensive...... but you crack on if you feel its value for money.
@K1LLEGAL Lego as also Charged there stuff like that, Idk why, the older the age, the more its priced for whatever reason, I to hate the price.
@Snatcher Yea - I don’t mind a premium given how spot on these lego sets usually are and with licenses etc. But this is a bit too high. Even £80 would be pushing it.
It is awesome though 😍
I skipped out in the NES Lego set, so I’ll probably get this and call it a therapy buy.
@Patendo Expensive is not the same as overpriced. Overpriced is literally priced higher than the sum of parts and labor is worth, which is a factual thing.
For instance; a set made out of 100 paper pieces for 100 euro. That would be overpriced. Paper is very cheap to produce.
Expensive is when the price is high. And like I said, Lego is expensive. But it's not overpriced.
@sanderev cool story bro! My opinion is lego is over priced but thanks for your input. Plastic is cheap to manufactor and legos mark ups are huge thus overpriced.
I love all the people who think this is expensive. You can tell who is use to looking at Legos and who isn't. Nearly 2100 pieces for $170 is a really good price for Lego, especially a Nintendo licensed Lego.
@Tobo91 It won't. It'll hold that price till it goes out of production and is retired. Then the price only goes up.
@Patendo You just don't understand Lego, do you?
On average one single Lego piece is between €0,05 and €0,10. There are over 2000 pieces in this set. That's is between €100,00 and €200,00. Then the amount of Technic pieces (on average between €0,08 - €0,15) should also be taken into consideration. Giving it a price between €150 and €225.
It's very easy to see that €170 is right in the middle of that.
So, in no possible way overpriced. But yeah, €170 is still a lot of money. It's actually underpriced.
@sanderev please stop going on, Lego is overpriced, not just this set- my opinion and experience. Why you forcing your views so strongly at me? Chill out and move on Mr Lego Ambassador lol
@Patendo Because you are wrong. Why are you forcing your views so strongly at me? Chill out and move on Mr Lego Hater. rofl
You say that Lego is overpriced. That's a factual statement. But it's incorrect. I supported my claim with evidence.
You have stated 0 evidence and when you see that you can't win, you become all defensive and start the name-calling.
@K1LLEGAL Can't lie, it sure is.
@sanderev Its peoples money, it people can say if its overpriced or not, and guess what, a good amount of people, all agree, that this is overpriced. And people have the right to say if they think its worth there money or not, so if you don't like the word overpriced, then Its that people feel like its overpriced.
@sanderev wow why are you still messaging me? We have different opinions not facts. Enjoy your overpriced lego and have a nice day.
As per every single LEGO announcement people getting upset with the price like this isn't the standard they've set for all their products. I'm not even sure what people think this should be priced at - £50 lol?
Removed - unconstructive
This is pretty neat, but they should have made it so it folds into the cube shape. That would have allowed the dioramas to be larger. This looks nice as it is, but it feels like a lot of wasted space. Too rich for my blood.
@Snatcher It could be my misunderstanding of the English language. The literal translation of Overpriced in Dutch would be a verifiable thing (it's factual too expensive) where the word for Expensive would be an opinion.
Where in English the meaning seems to be the same.
So @Patendo, based on your opinion it may be overpriced. Based on facts, it's not.
@sanderev facts as you see them..... enjoy your reasonably priced plastics whilst Legos profit margins grow! Overpriced and expensive is my experience and opinion so please move on from pointlessly talking to me.
@sanderev OMG mate, your looking to much into it, when people here say, its overpriced, they mean they think its to much money for the normal lego buyer, For a stupid rich person, this wouldn't be the case, but for a lot of people it is.
@Patendo LEGO profit margin per set is 25%, so for a £159.99 set, they're making a £40 profit, so if they were to make no money on this set they would have to still price it at £119 to break even
this looks like a great Lego set. a 2000+ lego piece count should be a challenge.
i hope that they will release other super Mario 64 themed levels as well. for example they could create a scale lego model of Big Boo's Haunt. the level is basically a world in a cage hidden in a boo. (the set may end up being 8000+ pieces)
Lego and Nintendo could create an entire Lego set around it.
the base of the set will be Boo, with many levels and sub-levels inside.
the main level of the set inside the cage is what Mario sees when he enters the level including the haunted house, the coins, the spiders, and the other building.
lower level one will be the paths that Mario takes to in order to get to Boos merry-go-round. which includes the elevator shaft and the alternate paths to boos merry-go-round.
then there will be the basement level which includes Boos merry-go-round, and the path to the elevator.
the two building should be made so that they can be opened up so that Lego Mario can get inside them, which will include the power caps, coins (red, blue, and gold), books, piano, eyes, boos, red coin star location, as well as a power star for Mario to collect.
So, first we get Giant Mario, and now we get Mini Mario. It's starting to feel as if Nintendo is purposefully avoiding making a standard-sized Mario figure, lest it enables making "objectionable" content when mixed with other Lego sets.
