Though it currently has a vague 2022 release window, Splatoon 3 had a notable appearance in the latest Nintendo Direct, with a look at the classic 4v4 Turf War mode and a sneak peak at the story content.
In terms of the Turf War clips we can see a new arena in the environment, some interesting weapons and - most intriguingly - a crab-like mech.
The campaign sequences look rather good too, and 'the return of the Mammalians' will be a key theme in the story - after all, only two cats were known surviving mammals, so if more appear it'll no doubt cause some chaos.
Lots is being held back at this stage of course, but Nintendo will no doubt ramp up with regular updates as we head into next year.
Enter the Splatlands, a sun-scorched desert inhabited by battle-hardened Inklings and Octolings. Splatsville, the city of chaos, is the adrenaline-fueled heart of this dusty wasteland.
Even in this desolate environment, Turf War* reigns supreme and battles rage in new stages located in the surrounding wilds. Dynamic new moves help these fighters dodge attacks and cover more ground, along with a new bow-shaped weapon to sling ink.
Join Agent 3 in a fight against the evil Octarian army in story mode. Discover the secrets of Alterna, the Fuzzy Ooze, and how they connect to the mode's theme, "Return of the Mammalians.”

I feel like the subtitle is going to easily be misread.
can't believe you're stepping on my crab news turf
Meh, I'm not feeling this one. I was hoping for a bigger leap from Splatoon 2, but it seems like same old Splatoon. Maybe if they show off some crazy new mode I might go for it, but I'm not particularly hyped for this.
"In a world where all mammals, except for two cats, have vanished!"
I think they forgot about Mr. Grizz.
The robot is gonna be on my plate.
@KateGray Splatoon 3's crab will give us more crab news to talk about.
I just hope there's a giant version you can flip over and attack its weak point for massive damage.
@Aurumonado Were the 2 cats a boy cat and a girl cat? Because if so they could create more cats.
Looks awesome. Splatoon music is so, so good too. Digging the beats in that trailer.
Wow. A trilogy by Nintendo. Cool. Can we finish Super Mario Galaxy?
beyond hyped
LOVED Splatoon 2. Very much looking forward to Splatoon 3.<33
I love the upside down city buildings urbanscape.
@Aurumonado
I never saw Mr. Grizz in Splatoon 2. Did you?
The game looks sick but I'm worried it may just be more of the same. That's not a bad thing, mind you; more Splatoon is always welcome. I just hope they do something unique and fresh for this one.
Story mode is looking interesting now.
I hope it has enough new additions to distinguish it from the previous games. Enough for a dedicated presentation too.
@Aurumonado To be fair, the bear statue isn't what Grizz really looks like. It just has a voice box in it that he uses to communicate with others so we don't really know what Grizz truly looks like
So. What's new in Splatoon V3 since Wii U version, except for the 180$ price tag
@reporterdavid Will never happen as it costs money to make Galaxy 3.
Splatoon is so much cheaper to trick people with.
Add 2 new simple levels to the Wii U game, and release it as a new 70$ makes much more sense to Nintendo wallet.
@Bolt_Strike I understand ya tbh. I'm actually kind of hype because I didn't play the first one much and I skipped the second one so this one I'm happy for I'm not splatooned out
Eventually, I'm going to have to update my profile picture because of this. It's time to move on from edgy, overly difficult boss/former playable character to a captain.
The best thing about ending the Direct with Splatoon 3 and Bayonetta is that their fans can finally stop asking for them, and that just MAYBE Nintendo can start focusing on giving the rest of us what we really want next year, namely BotW 2, Metroid Prime 4, and Mario Kart 9, among others. And let's be realistic; those will likely be the Switch's collective swan song for all intents and purposes. While some of the games we already know about look great (Triangle Strategy) and I can't wait to see Brewster in ACNH, for me personally there wasn't a single new, original title that piqued my interest (sorry, just never could get into Kirby). I'd say the Direct was a disappointment but then I learned long ago to temper my expectations where Nintendo is concerned.
Looks like more of the same just with a different flavour.
I thought they'd do a fully fledged single player campaign this time around, as they had much more resources and time on their hands after "rushed" Splatoon 2... but nope, not the case here, it's the same mission based design with 1 hub and 5-10 hours of gameplay to warm you up before online matches.
Sadly, I'll most probably pass on Splatoon 3.
Splatoon is my favorite new ip from Nintendo so I’m definitely happy to see it, but it is a little soon for one I think. Anyway the new stretchy weapon that lets you stick to far off surfaces looks really cool and this one is giving me ice age feels with an icy overworld and the coming of hairy humans suited for it.
The music in this trailer is beyond awesome. However I can’t help thinking that Splatoon 3, Bayonetta 3, BOTW2 & Metroid Prime 4 are destined for Nintendo’s next console…..but if they’re not then next year is going to be one hell of a time to be a Nintendo gamer.
I haven’t played Splatoon in a while, so something in this trailer caught my eye…is painting walls a new gameplay element, or has that been a thing? If it’s new, it opens up tons of new possibilities.
You're a mammal now.
@JimmyFleck na you could always ink walls and use them for ambushes. but it does look like there's some kind of hookshot/grapple type weapon that connects to inked walls?
I think that Splatoon is one of the best games ever made, and certainly one of the best multiplayer shooters. I don't have a Switch, so I haven't played Splatoon 2 yet. But knowing what I do about it, and what I've seen of 3, the game is getting too complex. For those who have played both 1 and 2, what is your opinion? For me, the additions don't seem to add much to the gameplay; they just unnecessarily complicate it. Do you feel that Splatoon 2 is objectively better than 1? Do you feel that the new weapons and perks have improved the experience or competition? What is your opinion on 3 so far?
This has disturbed me on many levels... This means that squid-kid people don't have nipples 😳😳😳😳😳
I cried tears of joy when I saw the squid sisters back!
I have a really good feeling that Octavio will be good!
I think Mr.Grizz is a mammal himself!
If I get Splatoon 3, I can put it on a shelf next to Splatoon 2 and gather twice as much dust.
@Moistnado you could have bought Splatoon 1 as well and gather x3 layers of dust XD
@Gryffin
>But knowing what I do about it, and what I've seen of 3, the game is getting too complex. For those who have played both 1 and 2, what is your opinion?
The forums here on NL is probably a better place for this question, and I kinda find it interesting enough to build a discussion around.
I myself find S2 as a more polished version of S1. S1 is a bit rough on the edges after S2, but both still loads of fun if you're into competitive online. I'm not that much into competitive scene, but I still enjoyed them a lot <scratch> and had to go to rehab to break out of addiction</scratch> XD
Looking at that fresh trailer, yeah, it is getting more and more complex with each installment, but I think they could still make it easily accessible for newcomers.
The real problem I see here is that S3 really looks too similar to S2 (which on its on right was too similar to S1, just with a nicer coat and streamlined maps). That's what I see so far. You know Splatoon is a great series, awesome fresh IP, but it gets too samey, too iterative.
@anynamereally Splatoon 1 guarantees maximum dust collection due to the larger box and the fact that I don't have a Wii U.
