I love my Retro Game Challenge for the DS. I even got Game Center CX 2 as an import cart, but unfortunately I don't know how to 'alphabetize' hiragana for the Haggleman game.
Localization of Game Center CX 3 for the 3DS when?
I went to a sushi conveyor belt restaurant that was 'Demon Slayer themed'. Every 5 plates so would activate a little mini-game that was pure chance. If you won, a gacha-pon dispensed itself onto the table.
I also picked Ludus, because I wanted to try playing the game from the female perspective. I also went with a brown-skinned avatar with purple hair, which ended up being weird because your character icon (what you look like on the mini-map) looked nothing like her. Plus interacting with your family is weird, like no one mentions that you're either adopted or a total gyaru.
I really liked A New Beginning, so I tried to 'customize' as much as I could. You can set up your own house and farm, sure, but I tried customizing 'important dates' in an effort to be weird.
I attempted to force the wedding date to fall on my birthday. That didn't work, the game won't let you do that, it just skips to the next possible day. Then I attempted to force our child's birthday to my birthday, and while the game will let you try to do that (and with Ludus' 'kid initiation event' requiring some timing, it was a little tricky), but then something really weird happened.
So, when you're expecting, all the villagers start saying different things to you. During the two days my avatar was 'overdue', all the villagers stopped talking about the imminent baby. This really freaked me out. Day 1: 'Happy Birthday' from everybody, but no baby talk. Day 2, from Ludus: 'Happy Anniversary', but no baby talk. Day 3: Baby.
Whew!
I hope we get back to A New Beginning's style of village creation, I had a lot of fun with that one back in the day.
I love this game. The gameplay loop isn’t amazing, catching comets eventually gets old, and some of the non-spirit side characters (the raccoon, the shark, the bird? collector lady) could be explained better, but man.
Spoilers, the game is dedicated to everyone the developers loved and lost. As a witness to mortality myself, it just works so well.
I want to be like Summer or Gustav when I grow up. Sadly, I guess I’m stuck as Buck.
Back in the day, getting all the StreetPasses walking around Tokyo, clearing them all on the train, and doing it all over again. Or heck, just hanging around the international terminal at the airport and raking all the StreetPasses from users from other countries.
I didn’t hate this game, I hated the official game guide that was published with it. There were so many subsystems, like land placement, or pet training, or forging, and all the official guide said was, ‘try it out!’ It was a total hack-job.
A few years later I was lucky enough to get my hands on the Japanese guide, and it was as thick as a bible.
The Never-Ending Fantasy item might also be a reference to Endless Fantasy, the album that Anamanaguchi released, oh, uhm...after this game came out. Never mind.
I went coocoo crazy go nuts with Harvest Moon: A New Beginning (like, spending months save-scumming to get more than 100 units of bamboo), and then with Trio of Towns I tried to game the system by getting married on my birthday, or forcing my child's birthday to match my husband's birthday.
Let me tell you what happens when you force your child's birthday to match your spouse's birthday: it doesn't work. Further, while everyone in town is excited to meet the new baby, when you get into the day (or days) that conflict with an existing important birthday or holiday, everyone stops talking about the baby. For about two hours, I thought that my character had a secret miscarriage or I had been abducted by aliens or something.
So hopefully (I mean, not for my sanity, that's already gone), this new game will have the town customization of A New Beginning combined with the brain-melting ability to intersect your birthday with your child's birthday with your spouse's birthday with your anniversary.
and now I'm imagining an alternate universe where, I dunno, Atari pulled their head out of their butt in the nick of time, made a Shantae platformer in 1987, and competed with Nintendo before the console wars started.
I love that WayForward is treating Shantae like an old-school gaming mascot a la Mario and Sonic. Next up: Shantae breakfast cereal with little skull marshmallows. Yum!
@NintendoFan4Lyf Yeah! I went and got a copy of that. It came with this pretty amazing book. I never played the game much, but the accompanying book was fantastic.
Aww, I loved getting Babymetal and BMWers and the Arwing to use as little avatars. I played a ton of original levels to unlock random amiibos too, that was a fun hook.
ahhh, I loved Legend of Mana, and that art style really did sell it. I want to go back to where there's a graveyard full of sentient, paralyzed, and slowly rotting toy soldiers, and you can put a barrel (a literal) into your soul.
I got some hanafuda cards for Christmas too. It’s a deck of small, thick, slick cards that each have a different picture of flowers on them. It’s time to party like it’s 1889!
Samurai Champloo meets Usagi Yojimbo meets OSSU! TATAKAE! OUUUUUEEENNNNNDAAANNNN!! is a very strong play for me...but, ah, why no 3DS love exactly? I want my bunny beats on the streets, man!
Liberation Maiden forces you to do things with the stylus in your right hand. The game doesn't have circle pad pro support, so you can't switch hands, either.
My favorite of the bunch is Crimson Shroud. For those who have it, I built a set of 'shroud dice' for gaming, which is a bunch of translucent dice of different colors: orange d20, yellow d12, etc. Suprisingly difficult to put together.
I really like the gameplay, And the story was suitably ridiculous. Worst part: the game has a looot of diverse characters, buuut all the black people look angry! John Henry is scowly, and that Queen of California was also scowly.
Next game, make the black guy (or gal) the protagonist. Please?
a) two games were released for the DS in Japan. I have both of them. They're great. I don't know a lot of Japanese, but they're fine as is. The music is great, the scenarios are great, the insane fascist cheerleader squad thing is great, and it offered one of the first rhythm titles for the DS. b) I don't know why the team that made Ossu Tatakae Ouendan decided to do a western release, but they did: Elite Beat Agents. This game is actually kinda worse than Tatakae, and the big culprit? Music. The team licensed the Village People, they licensed Michael Jackson (while he was still alive, which should have been a crime), they licensed whatever pop songs they could for the cheapest money possible. End result? meh.
The takeaway: if a game is great, and the market research shows there's not enough of a market to justify localization (and it's not chock full of text, like Phoenix Wright or 999)? eff it, just release it in the US as is and see if it sticks. I know I'd love to try that muscle-guys-busting-through-walls game, and I don't think I'd care if there was a wall of Japanese to wade through. sure, you're not going to have a hit on your hands right away, but you might have an 'indie hit', and keep a good reputation for quirk.
Oh hey Review Person (Morgan?): Can you switch to the Japanese soundtrack? In the demo, I can't stand it when the princess shouts 'We wo~on!' after a battle. If I have to hear someone loli-channing that bit of soundtrack, I'd rather hear it in something other than my native language.
Infinite Space 2! More Infinity! Bigger space pauldrons! Gothic space cathedrals firing efficiently Teutonic laser beams from their spires! An entire race of H.E.L.P.ers! Psychic powers! Giant hair!
They had Bravest Warriors on for a while. What I liked was that even though the episodes came to Nintendo Video a few weeks after their initial release, the YouTube app's resolution was much less than what Nintendo Video could do. I also found that one claymation music video to be pretty awesome.
On the other hand, boy howdy did they make some poor editorial choices. Yeesh. I wonder where that nice lady who made interesting video game food went?
To people who want to know what this game is about, I saw it at PAX East. Yes, a 9-player demo is insane, but to get there you have to do pretty nutty things 1. 4 Wiimotes 2. 4 Wiimote Classic Controllers (so, 8 players are basically tethered to each other, and 4 of them have as much control as a wiimote minus motion control can offer) 3. 1 GamePad
So yes, you can play this with 9 people. I really doubt it's practical outside of a con setting, however.
Gameplay 1. You run. 2. You fight while you run 3. Every so often the background color changes, which can temporarily make some platforms appear or disappear. 4. Matches take, oh, about 1 minute maybe?
a) the game is great. tactics, stealth, line of sight, precision, great fun
I know this might sound stupid, but this is what I want in a Dungeons & Dragons title. so, high praise from me!
b) style/setting: What, was the art direction done by the Penny Arcade guys? I feel like PA can't parody this game with 'their own take', because the game cribs art style in spades from them in the first place
Also, John Henry, I gotta say, does he have to scowl in his official portrait? Can we please get past Mister T/Barrett/Luke Cage when it comes to African-American representation in video games? Plus it looks like a) he's a steampunk cyborg, which is cool in one direction, and kinda not-cool in another, and b) he's voiced by Michael Dorn, who is contractually obligated not to use his angry voice ever again.
Am I overthinking that?
tl; dr: love the gameplay, not sold on the art/aesthetic
Oi! Can you enter special characters into password fields with the new browser? I tried logging into my gmail account from the 3DS browser, and it won't let me choose special characters in the password keyboard. Is there a change in the new browser?
Oh yeah...what's the difference in CPU chips? You say: oh, there's a new CPU, it's shiny. Very 'in-depth', yeah? How about taking some models apart and taking pictures of chips, pretty please?
Eh, I picked up a 3rd party battery pack for my 3DS (non-XL) from Gamestop for $5. Used to be if I played a lot on my way home from work and didn't charge it, I couldn't play on my way to work the next day. Now with this thing strapped on, I can be lazy about charging at home. So, great?
Plus I gut a really neat sticker to cover up Nyko's ludicrous charging port on the back of the thing.
I guess that's one argument against kisekae plates (although I will miss my N3DS small): stickers. Why not just use a sticker or two?
yeah, sorry, not especially culturally sensitive on Nintendo's part right there. India is more than just a place with snake charmers, and Africa isn't even a country, it's like a ton of countries with all different kinds of stuff going on.
Mario as a tourist visiting these places? great. Some non-Mario peeps waving hi? fine. Zulu Mario? uh-uh
but heck, let's ask Reggie! Maybe he'll respond on twitter or something.

Re: Talking Point: Which Is Your Favourite 3DS Theme?
Fire Emblem Fates theme, I have a New Nintendo 3DS with the Fates' plates, so it's Fire Emblem inside and out, oh yeah!
I wish that Infinite Space got a remake or a remaster so I could have a theme or plates for that, but oh well.
