This research isn’t blaming video games directly, and the article’s title is quite misleading and obviously was chosen to attract clicks and create controversy (like seems to be the norm here as of late).
The research points that violent video games seem to have an effect in a number of individuals. It’s just ONE more of the multitude of violence that surrounds us everywhere, from movies to video games and even the news. There’s violence everywhere, and that affects us (to some people more than to others) whether we realize it or not.
I’m not against violent video games. I love violent video games and think that their effect on people is marginal at best but, for starters, age ratings should be respected. A 9 years old kid shouldn’t be playing Wolfenstein or even Fortnite for that matter (which is basically a mass murder simulator).
There are some things that aren’t apt to young minds yet, and violence is one of them. That we’re introducing violence to them too early and making it seem normal and common even from a very young age is something that should concern everyone.
Now if it only were priced accordingly to what it is (a rental) instead of being full price I might be tempted to pick it up. As it is, it will never happen.
I played (or tried to) OfT on my 3DS but I could't get comfortable with the controls or specially the camera. It all felt so weird that I can't play more than 20 minutes straight.
I haven't played more than a couple hours or so total and I can't find the will to keep trying. I'm totally sure it is wonderful game but it just doesn't give me the same excitement than Link to the Past, or Link Between Worlds, or Wind Waker or even Breath of the Wild gave me.
I haven't played Majora's Mask or Twilight Princess so I don't know about those games.
I wish it could get a remaster on Switch with better camera, then I'll be willing to try it again.
Of course it’s doing well, people want to play online and the only way to do it is subscribing.
The main selling point of the service is not online saves, and it’s not the NES games, is the ability to continue playing online. The other things are just extras in top of that.
Some people are saying that now that is selling Nintendo won’t improve it, I say that it’s exactly the other way around.
The peer-to-peer versus dedicated servers argument is already old. In some situations PtP is better, in others, dedicated servers are better. There is no all-round solution. A dedicated server is better for big games with a huge number of players at the same time, something like World of Warcraft. For other games, a dedicated server will only be good if you are actually physically located near it. I don’t know if most people are aware, but actually most PS4 and Xbox games are running also on PtP, so why does it become a problem when Nintendo do it? I just don’t get it. Nintendo’s online was bad before, there’s no denying that, but with the Switch I’ve had literally no issues with any game whatsoever, so all the complaining is undeserved and based in the performance of past consoles alone.
Could it be better? Definitely, and I’m sure that now that they are getting money from it, part of that profit will be used to improve it over time.
I find so weird that they keep releasing the same game over and over again each year with just negligible changes and call it a "new" game. Same with CoD and several other yearly franchises.
Never cared for "realistic" sport sims. If I get the pull to play some football in a video game, I prefer games like Inazuma Eleven.
But, well, this game obviously is not targeted at people like me.
Good riddance. I’m very glad Nintendo won and not because I think they’re in their right to protect their IP (which they are) but because the people driving those karts were a huge nuisance and a real danger.
It might look cool from a tourist perspective, but in truth it was horrible for anyone living there and suffering that.
I’m surprised I actually like this game. I’ve never played a MOVA before and I’ve never had a good opinion of them... but I tried this today and did like it.
I don’t think this game will keep me entertained for a long time, but for the time being it’s quite fun.
Weird decision, to be honest, but I guess Konami know what they're doing... (nah, maybe they don't)
I honestly believe that this collection could sell much more on Switch than on PS.
Edited: @Damo I didn't know that Sony paid for the development... That explains a lot. Though anyway, I don't see this game selling as much as it could on Switch.
I owned both a PSP and a Vita (not anymore though). Both were great, specially the Vita, but Sony killed it right after it was born. Uncharted and Killzone on the Vita were awesome games that demonstrate the capabilities of the system, but Sony just didn’t care.
I’ve never ever used chat when playing online, not on the Switch and not on any other console, and I don’t think that’s going to change.
Unless it is strictly with people in your friend list I want nothing to do with voice chat. Having total strangers insulting and making fun of you is not what I consider having fun when playing games.
I mean, even in games where the only way to communicate is through emotes, like Hearthstone, people always find a way to become annoying or downright insulting.
I’m completely in the minority, but as far as I’m concerned, voice chat could completely cease to exist and I wouldn’t mind it in the least.
@JaxonH Season 1 of The Walking Dead is indeed a masterpiece. It is a really great game and I recommend it to anyone.
Season 2 was just barely OK... Besides that, I've never played any of the other seasons, not even any of their other games, so I can't comment on their quality.
@DawgP Thanks for the info. That’s pretty harsh. The honorable thing to do is to give enough time in advance to the person being fired, so he or she can prepare and have time to search for a new job. People’s lives can be very adversely affected by a sudden termination of work. At least some consideration should be the minimum.
I liked Odyssey. It didn’t wow me, but I thought it was a great game and had a lot of fun playing it.
In my opinion, Breath of the Wild is one of the best games ever made. It’s a bit lacking story wise, there’s no denying that, but the gameplay and setting are superb in every single way.
On the other hand, I must say that Katamari is one of the most boring games ever, again, just in my opinion.
@Cobalt That’s good, and I agree. Just remember that not everyone is as lucky as you to be able to own all systems. Some people, me included, just own one system for one reason or another it doesn’t matter. For those who own several other systems, playing a game where it releases first is logical. Why would someone play an “inferior” version on Switch when other consoles are “better”? Well, there might be tons of reasons. Perhaps they don’t have other consoles, or perhaps they don’t have the required time to sit in front of a TV, so being able to play anytime is priceless even if it’s an “inferior” version. Please, kindly notice that all those “better” and “inferior” terms are purely subjective. Just enjoy what you have and let other people enjoy what they have.
@Cobalt You are totally right about the sales, but what makes you think that other people won’t have a blast playing it on Switch just like you are having a blast playing it on PS4?
Wasn’t that obvious from the beginning? I don’t think there is anyone surprised by this. The nature of the game itself doesn’t adapt well to single play, much less while in handheld mode.
@tourjeff Nintendo has nothing to do with that and finding any reason however far fetched it might be, just to complain is not very wise.
Like @NEStalgia said, all cloud services are basically running on one of the three big corporations and Nintendo is no different. Nintendo uses Google, Microsoft uses their own (Azure) and Sony uses Amazon.
Nintendo's reasons are pretty spot on. We might not agree with them, but that doesn't mean they are wrong. Because they aren't wrong.
And about some third-party games not supporting cloud saves... Nintendo has nothing to do with that. It's up to the developers to decide if they support the feature or not.
This is just blowing a problem out of proportion just for the sake of it. It is a problem, yes, but not that big of a problem.
A N64 mini is mostly surely coming, but between licensing issues and how badly early 3D games have aged (as opposed to the late 16 bits pixel games from the SuperNES) I can’t see this becoming the kind of hit that the NES and SuperNES mini were.
Same with the PlayStation mini... early 3D games feel too old and clunky now.
I know I wouldn’t be paying if it was as expensive as PS+ or Xbox Live. Specially considering I would need to pay for three users, making it all the more expensive.
I haven’t bought any VC games before on my 3DS or Wii U so, in my case, I’ll be playing those games again for the first time in over 30 years. So, for me, these games are a very nice addition to the Online Service.
@Tokiwa Actually we don’t know if there will be grace period. Have Nintendo said anything about that? (Genuine question, since I don’t know).
I don’t think they’re going to give us 6 months like PS+, but I don’t believe that the saves will be deleted instantly after the subscription expires.
Besides, the cloud saves are just a backup. The moment you renew the current, newest saves will be uploaded.
I see an issue only if your Switch breaks or is lost, but if you are not paying anymore for the service, then it’s pretty obvious (and logical) what happens.
@Tokiwa And why exactly should they keep using server space if you’re not paying anymore? I guess keeping them a few weeks or a month would be great for those who just forgot to renew, but eternal storage waiting for someone that may never pay again? That’s expecting way too much.
I’ll use my apartment analogy again. If you stop paying, do you expect the landlord to keep that apartment empty forever waiting for you to come back?
Isn’t that obvious? It’s how all subscription services work. You stop paying, you lose access. Wanting it to be otherwise is unrealistic. If you stop paying the rent you’ve got to get out of your apartment, don’t you?
@JaxonH The problem I have with this is that we will be paying full price for the game, but we can't play on the go and we're just renting it for two years instead of owning it forever.
PS4 and Xbox owners keep their game when purchasing it, right? But Switch owners only rent it for a period of time while still paying full price...
I’ll pay because I want to play online, the rest are just extras.
People seem to like comparing all the extras that PS+ offer with Nintendo’s service, while purposely ignoring the huge difference in price.
I’d be concerned if we were paying the same but getting less, as it is now, the price is perfectly reasonable.
The argument that it was free before doesn’t make much sense either. Yes, it was free but now it’s not (and everybody knew about it since day one). Take it or not.
If someone wants to complain, I say it’s way too late. You should have done it when MS started doing it.
@Silly_G @Anti-Matter OK, I see now... Thank you! I'll try it then! I honestly though that just one person could play the game because it had just one save. Like with Pokemon games.
This will be my first Animal Crossing game. My daughter is playing New Leaf on her 2DS but since there’s just one save I never tried it. I’m curious to say the least.
The Luigi's Mansion 3 announcement was awesome the best thing in the entire Direct.
After that I didn't care much for everything else. I've never played Animal Crossing, so the announcement doesn't mean much to me.
I was waiting for a Metroid Prime Trilogy HD announcement, but was sorely disappointed.
The worst thing was the announcement of Assassin's Creed: Odyssey for Switch... Just another aberration like Resident Evil 7. But even worst because the game is more expensive than the PS4 or Xbox versions but don't get to own it, just rent it for 2 years. That's a very bad taste joke.
This was the best announcement of the Direct (followed by Animal Crossing), the rest, unfortunately, had absolutely nothing for me.
I was waiting for a Metroid Prime Trilogy HD until the last second and was sorely disappointed.
The new Assassin’s Creed Cloud game is an aberration priced as a full game when you don’t even own it, just rent it for about 2 years and you can’t play on the go because you won’t have Internet access.
@Krull The game sold more or less the same when you look at the percentage instead of absolute numbers, but anyway the game doesn’t seem to be very good and the Switch version is not very optimized so that had some impact. Other games like My Hero One’s Justice sold better on Switch even with a smaller install base than the PS4. It depends on the game and the care the developers put into making a good Switch port.
I have it on my iPad and though the game is beautiful it couldn't make me want to go back to play it after a couple of days. I didn't find it specially interesting or anything.

Re: Assassin's Creed Odyssey Cloud Version Screens Released, Switch File Size Also Revealed
@NintyNate I highly doubt he or she had a top connection... As far as I can tell RE7 works nearly flawlessly and on par with the other consoles.
If the connection is good the game will run perfectly.

@RadioHedgeFund I don’t know if you’re aware but I’m referring to the cloud version for Switch that is available in Japan.
Are you OK paying the same price as the other consoles even if you are just renting the game for a determined amount of time?
If I’m paying the same price as the others I expect to be able to keep the game indefinitely, just like they do.
If it’s just a rental, then price it as a rental.
Re: Video: Assassin's Creed Odyssey Contains An Adorable Nintendo Easter Egg

Re: Elementary School Students In Japan Use 3DS As Their Main Music Player
@GKO900 I might very well be in the minority here, but I don't think I need or even want a browser in the Switch.
I've never, not even once, used the browser on my Wii U or PS3. I don't think that it would be different with the Switch...
That doesn't mean that I'd be pissed or totally against Nintendo adding one, of course not, just saying that I don't see the need for one.

Other games like My Hero One’s Justice sold better on Switch even with a smaller install base than the PS4. It depends on the game and the care the developers put into making a good Switch port.
Re: Fantasy Strategy Game Armello Arrives On Switch At The End Of The Month
I have it on my iPad and though the game is beautiful it couldn't make me want to go back to play it after a couple of days. I didn't find it specially interesting or anything.
