I gave it a 9 with the rapid fire pacing. I was genuinely enthused about Digimon and Tales of Arise. I am also looking at a few games I would not have considered before.
It went by so quickly I almost forgot in the end I was hoping for a Metaphor and Clair Obscur.
I am surprised Blue Prince hasn’t made the jump.
I do wonder if FromSoftware has run into development snags.
For the people rating it below 5, I would ask, do you not have a backlog?
I’m actually relieved that there are only seven or eight games that I would buy in a presentation like this. My wallet thanks me.
I didn’t mention this earlier, but I only want to focus on new announcements, and anything that was featured on a prior Direct that is just missing a release date could probably be in a short sizzle reel at the end.
I voted Marvel Rivals because my kids would play it, Metaphor because I would play it, and Monster Hunter because I think that’s just a series that belongs on Switch.
I have a feeling the first party will be in April. I’m looking forward to some known quantities such as Duskbloods and FF VII, crossing my fingers for Metaphor and Clair Obscur, and hoping to be surprised by some potential Switch exclusives. I want to know what Vanillaware is up to. It’s also high time for Xbox ports.
@Lord I did not know about most of these special editions! They should totally go all out in the final year of Switch 1, and maybe next year start with Switch 2 editions.
This might be the year that they finally get with the strategy of selling at a loss in order to make it up on software, which remains expensive. The price that PC enthusiasts pay to be on the bleeding edge should not set the tone for consoles, which were always entry level both in terms of age and price.
Based on the release schedule, at this point I could see a Nintendo Direct in either February or April. Of course, I'd rather have it be February. Or, I could just wait a couple days instead of hitting "Reply," and not have to speculate. Oops.
I have already pre-ordered the Fire Emblem physical collectors edition in my mind. Also, based on the photo above, I don't understand why some people are not down with the character design.
@somnambulance It seems like they are using the goodwill from Switch 1 to go with A- to B tier titles, and leaving the heavy hitters for later. What is astounding to me is they still sold 17 million consoles, without a mainline 3D Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, and Splatoon and Smash Bros.
@Anti-Matter This is a nice cover art. I pre-ordered the physical edition from Best Buy for my son, but he said he had eshop funds and wanted it digital to be able to access easily it all the time. So we cancelled the physical and pre-ordered digital
@Friendly I agree about making a series of collectible Switch Lite and 10th anniversay models in the next year, for the fans, to pass 160 million. If they did one like that for Mario, Luigi, Pokemon, Splatoon, Fire Emblem, Monster Hunter, etc, they could probably boost sales through end of 2027 holiday season. Does anyone know how many of the Zelda and Animal Crossing Switch Lites sold? I was seriously tempted to get the Zelda one, if I had not recently bought a 2nd household OLED TOTK edition.
In regards to the GKC comments, to me the larger travesty, if you care about physical editions, is the cover art. The Switch 2 versions are systematically worse than the Switch 1 counterparts. If this website did a Box Art Brawl years from now for the Switch 1 vs 2 it would be no contest.
@axelhander This is great. I think we will have a better chance voting with our wallets because at least where I live, the politicians are either too enthralled with or have no clue about technology. Corporations have a seat at the table that the common person does not.
I do think that for a country that is large, the amount of physical sales is relatively low, especially if you look at how many consoles sold this week. What are they playing on their new consoles? is there any data on weekly software sales in total not just the top 10?
@EarthboundBenjy That’s one way to look at it. I see this whole experiment as adding value to NSO. And given that Virtual Boy failed spectacularly once before, I can understand why Nintendo is being cautious with this relaunch. The bigger complaint is the ridiculously priced plastic that you need to purchase to then play games that you can only rent.
@hendie100 You could probably get a good deal selling a sealed copy, and if you really miss the game try a used disc only. I suggest watching some footage online to make sure it suits your preference. I'm curious how you kept a sealed copy for so long that takes discipline.
I picked it up a couple of years ago, but resold it. I can't go back to older games when there are so many newer ones with modern conveniences. Wii games have not aged well, in my opinion. They look so muddy, and have controller issues. The story is probably fine, but this is not James Joyce or William Faulkner, let's be real.
The 3DS version is very expensive right now. My son actually has told me several times he wants to pre-order this for his Switch 2. Therefore, it must have some kind of audience. Interested to know how they will price it.
I also feel like getting these out of the way will allow the next general direct have newer things. The previous direct spent a lot of time on non-gaming Mario stuff.
That's pretty good for a Switch 2 exclusive. It could crawl it's way higher in the ensuing years, and perhaps get a bump when to movie comes out. I have multiple of these games, but I only completed the main story on the first Fire Emblem. I got stuck in the Three Hopes, Persona, and other two Zeldas. Something about the map and traversal that makes my head spin.
After retiring Hades 2 on Switch eshop, I restarted FF Tactics Remake (physical), and if I get some extra free time will continue working through Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance (GCN) on Wii.
One thing that is underappreciated, and I have not seen highlighted anywhere when you look at the Switch 2 being the best selling console launch of all time is that it is still directly competing with the original Switch, whereas other consoles such as PlayStation 4 and Switch 1 were not really competing with their predecessors to the same degree.
I actually think Nintendo should try to maintain their low power/portable market because that’s probably the last hold out in the 2030s when it becomes all streaming / all Internet. You can’t stream in the middle of the forest.
@Joe11 The aggregate scores or meta scores should achieve the same effect and for something so subjective there’s only so much fine-tuning you can do. It’s not like making change at the cash register. How do you personally rate games that you have played? I’m not trying to start an argument. I’m just curious.
With is and other titles we see the diminishing returns of desktop level graphics over the past decade allowing for power efficient handheld to catch up. Compare this to a concurrent release from Game Boy Color vs Xbox circa 2001.
@Jeronan Most of my portable play is on the go though, and the Portal is trapped in my home. I also haven't ever got through a gaming session on the Portal without network issues, and I have excellent mesh Wi-Fi. Lastly, on the PS5 I selected the Graphics/ 30 FPS mode anyway, because I'm not adversley affected by 30 FPS like some people are. As such.... I double dipped.
@RecurringRob GTA is an evergreen title once you’re old enough; just like Minecraft for the younger audience. This list is usually two or three dozen of these titles along with a handful of “flavor of the month” either new releases or heavily discounted older games. It’s actually kind of a boring list week after week.
Oddly enough when I watch film at 60 FPS it is too smooth, and I guess my eyes are more accustomed to the slower frame rate. Even on PS5 I tend to pick graphics mode in the settings.
People tying this to stock market have to remember that is about profit/ loss, and if they have to spend more on RAM, they will lose money, even if they break sales records and have 90+ score on Metacritic. Shareholders != Gamers.
