@Pillowpants This is a great list. There was a rumored Fire Emblem remake, which would be new enough for most people outside of Japan. it may be too soon for another Xenoblade, unless it is a “warriors” game.
@rjejr I know the Luigi and Pilmin games reviewed and sold well, but I wonder if they’re thinking of changing up the formula. Once you start getting up into the 456 sequels, they can’t just be more of the same.
Yet somehow Nintendo Switch 2 launch broke all records. It’s interesting how they reach these settlements which are confidential and nobody admits fault. Do corporations need to save face when they are faceless entities?
@BaldB3lper78
I would describe this as greed as opposed to laziness (sloth). They could spend more money to make it run better, but then that would cut into their profits; hence greed, not “laziness.”
Looking at the bottom 35 through 50 rank, I can see why people are critical of the switch to launch. Several first party releases are duds. That being said, it is premature to have this list either do the launch lineup comparison with historical launches , or the year one comparison. The three month launch window is somewhat arbitrary.
@ShieldHero I get where you’re coming from. I have gotten a physical game before, and if I enjoyed enough I would double dip briefly to get the digital deluxe or equivalent with the DLC I wanted, and then perhaps sell the first original physical edition to recoup some money. I’m thinking of doing that with Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and 3 physical cartridges since I have the expansions digital.
@Sebos
Yes this is something that gets lost in the debate. People point to the fact that they still have working SNES cartridges, but the digital storefronts the 2000s are in danger of shutting down. What is unclear though is that since backwards compatbility and game preservation have reached greater awareness, if it won't become the norm for digital games to be available for longer than ever before, even perhaps rivaling the physical objects, which can break down over time.
@EriXz
I'm not sure with this, because although a "power user" may want more storage, in most computing they will keep the base storage low to encourage a wider adoption. Xbox Series S starts at 512GB, which is even relatively less generous, if you consider SW: Outlaws takes up 60GB on Xbox, and only 20GB on Switch 2. That is why all the consoles allow for additional storage. This is also true for SteamDeck etc.
@Real_Obsi
What I hear most is that Game Key-Cards are a poor compromise that do not have the convenience of digital, but then give up the ability to preserve internal storage space. PC gamers stopped caring long ago, because let's face it, installing from multiple DVD-ROM was a pain in the behind.
@topsekret Yeah it looks like Nintendo got caught up in a technological moment that reading speeds from physical media can't keep up with the graphics requirements of certain games. Sony and Xbox didn't "solve" this problem, as much as they didn't bother with it at all, because there was no way a Blu-ray could run their games natively.
Yeah, I’m so old that I most likely will not outlive my media, so I guess it doesn’t matter either way.
I still can’t predict how things will evolve. You’re right most corporations don’t build things to last and the tendency has been for the physical media to outlive the digital counterpart. Maybe there will be legislation worldwide that gains traction for digital preservation. Or conversely they have to reformulate physical components to decompose within fifteen years, for environmental reasons. We just don’t know.
@The_Nintendo_Pedant I wouldn't go so far as to say the dream is "dead." We are in a situation now that the kinds of graphical experiences people want requires a fast storage, and the cost/ tech has not caught up. For instance, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 on PS5 was said to require a fast SSD for seamless transitions. Nobody in their right mind would expect that to run directly off the Blu-ray or even a spinner external HDD. Sony straight up does not allow it. We don't know 5-10 years from now how screens, CPU, GPU evolution will or won't outpace advances in faster storage. I'm not enough of a tech guy to know what's being researched.
@Jeronan Yes this would have been a problem for me when I had Xfinity cable internet with a 1 TB monthly data cap, and $50 overage fee. It would have been rough to install huge games from the internet vs having it physical transferred from disc to internal SSD. However, since I changed to AT&T fiber with unlimited data, this is no longer an issue. I don't hear as much from the commenters about this problem, but I imagine it varies among regions. As such, I am considering selling off my PS5 physical games, and repurchasing the ones I still enjoy digitally. It is also better with a PS Portal not having to swap out the disc from two floors away.
@Gryzor Here we go again with the "servers will go offline eventually " prediction. As the industry moves toward digital purchases, who's to say that the digital storefronts won't need to be supported for longer? Even perhaps longer than the disc rot and cartridge read errors, or the shuffling off this mortal coil of the owners. Perhaps I should ask my lawyer to update my will as to how to pass on my digital assets? I'd like for my unborn grandchildren to play Silksong.
@Slideaway1983 I am mostly physical on Switch 1, so when I got a PS5 I figured to to do the same. However, I kind of regret not going mostly digital on PS5. They console experience is just different. Much in the way that I would actively dislike having to buy PC-CDROMs if the option to buy on Steam exists. Nintendo just has a different mileau for reasons that I'm sure more creative or sytematic thinkers could delineate.
@Ogbert The game key-card is a situation that has highlighted some of the pre-existing differences between physical vs digital games. Unfortunately, the way it is constructed seems to have more negatives than positives, thus the widespread angst.
@Sonicka Trust in authority has been eroding for many years now. If this statement was from the Ubisoft CEO, I would outright discount it. But since it was from an audio engineer, I am more inclined to believe it.
@Jeronan It's like N64 vs PS1 all over again. Except in the case of N64, it was a home console large enough to use CDROM, but Nintendo stuck with the cartridge format. Switch is obviously not able to load from Blu-rays, but it is not a pure handheld as was DS/3DS, so we hold it to a higher standard.
@eldersnake Is there a way to "force" full on cartridge games to run from internal storage? I don't own a Switch 2, but on my OLED Switch 1 digital games, it will launch whether installed on system or microSD.
@Duncanballs I wonder if OG Switch sales outside Japan will tank due to the tariffs. It was close to being #1 all time. I think they can still get there, but it would need something creative like a Tomodachi Life Switch Lite Edition bundle for around $239. I could see that alone shifting a couple million units. The 3DS title remains popular to this day.
@kalosn For a minute there, I thought you were going to complain about foliage. Always with the foliage. At least George Lucas had the good sense to film his first movie in the Tunisian desert, so moviegoers would not complain about the d*arn foliage!

I’ve had computers with hard drive storage since 1987 and the one constant is that I always run out of space no matter how much I initially started out with.
I have trouble finishing large open world games on console, and so having the portable version will likely make it my preferred platform. The gyro and touch controls are an added bonus, and the latter are not available on PS5/ Xbox. I also wanted the DLC, so having it be the "Gold Edition" is great. I expect this may eventually make its way to PS Plus. It has cross save features. This title has made it's way onto my wishlist for Black Friday sales perhaps.
@HugoGED
I struggle with this as well, but I'm not sure if how bad it will be. I don't have a Switch 2 yet, but my son does. We have DKC on cart. I haven't bought a game key-card. I don't like the idea of it, but I just don't know if it will matter if/ when I buy my first one. Basically, you pop it in, brew some coffee and do a couple of chores while it downloads, and then hop into it. With future gaming sessions you pop the cart in and out as if it was all on cart. Is it really that different a gameplay experience after the initial download? Yes I know I have to pay for the storage, and they are shifting that cost onto me as a customer > this is 21st century capitalism: everywhere else in my life I pay more for less, but I don't give up things that I love solely due to that.
@JohnnyMind I have Dark Deity on PC, but have not gotten around to it. I'd rather complete all the Fire Emblems before going to a copycat.
