Re: Japanese Charts: Tomodachi Life's Huge Start Crushes The Competition

kmtrain83

@Dr_Wright
I believe the Switch 1 sales got a bump this week because there were probably just some people who wanted this new Tomoadachi game and found it made more sense to spend less on the console.
I bet quite a few of those sales were for people who wanted a second Switch in their household, possibly for a younger person

Re: Japanese Charts: Combined PS5 Sales Can't Even Beat Switch Lite

Here is the states, it's called the "K-Shaped Economy." Sony is focusing on montezing the "whales" in their ecosystem rather than trying to broaden the base to include more of those lower income gamers who are mostly free to play Fortnite Roblox etc because they can't afford much else. Phone gaming rules because you pretty much need a smart phone in the modern world, as much as you need rent and food, and games on there are cheap or free; but what you don't need is a $900 PS 5 Pro.

Re: Review: Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream (Switch) - BREAKING NEWS: Mii Life Is Still Bizarre, Hilarious, And A Bit Samey

kmtrain83

This is the kind of game with a low ceiling, like no way it could ever be a 10/10. Therefore a 77 on meta/open critic is "in line with expectations," and I imagine the target audience will skew 8+. None of the reviews thus far are below 70, which means on balance, there is not much bad about it. The original on 3DS is a cult classic despite a lower metacritic (71).
That being said, it contiues the string of Nintendo 1st party titles that are shy of 90+ from the early Swtich era (BOTW, Odyssey, MK8)

Re: 007 First Light Shaken By Delay On Switch 2, Now Releasing After Other Consoles

@Divide_and_Wander
You can look at this issue both ways. If the problem is that the new console is already underpowered then I guess that’s a problem. On the other hand, it may be that early in the lifecycle people are less familiar with the development and later on, it will be easier.

A classic example is PlayStation 4 where the quality of games seem to trend up later in the 2010s.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

I'm not going to read any reviews, due to potential spoilers. That being said, I can see exactly where critics are coming from, ever since Robert Ebert proclaimed that "Video Games Can Never Be Art." I suspect a degree of snobbery, and believe they don't appreciate the encroachment of games onto their medium. Do they expect Mario to plumb the depths of his psyche like Marlon Brando in Apocalypse Now? I will wait to see the audience reaction.

Re: The Elder Scrolls: Blades Is Shutting Down This June

I had a decent time with it on iPad when it first launched, and may have paid about $5 for some starter elements. It was fun to build up the town. After a while it became repetitive, and the mobile elements started to become grating. We got our first Switch in late 2019 a few months after this game came out on iOS. I actually didn't bother to try it on Switch when it got ported over, because I had moved on by then. I might redownload on iPad before it's gone for good, just to remind me what it looked like.

@N8tiveT3ch
How far did you get? I found it less crunchy and more "been there done that" when it started. I gave it an 8/10 at first. Slowly but surely as the systems and characters developed, it became 10/10 GOTY for me totaling 200 hours with a couple of restarts.

Re: Nintendo Misses Out On Top 10 In Metacritic's 16th Annual Game Publisher Rankings

kmtrain83

@8bit-Man
These examples were all around 80 which helps their average metacritic of 77. What hurt Nintendo 1st party was the launch with Welcome Tour, which if they opted to make it a free pack in game, may have gotten more points, and Drag x Drive, which was not the new version of ARMS by any "stretch." Those two games getting 50-60 neutralized for example BK Bananza. They brought it on themselves though, and I agree they could do a bit better. Anyway, as long as it's friendly debate, these lists are fine.

Re: Nintendo's Apparently Cutting US Switch 2 Output After Lower Than Expected Holiday Sales

kmtrain83

We have no regrets about getting the Mario Kart bundle at launch. I feel like the games have been good to great, but not really any all time greats. Donkey Kong doesn’t shift units and Metroid was a letdown to some. It will be interesting when the Pokémon data starts to come through, but it is not a mainline game until 2027. So I’m starting to join the consensus that they really need some big hitters from the second half of this year.
I should also mention the S2 is a “son exclusive“ in his room and not on the big TV, but he says when Fire Emblem comes out, I can borrow it

Re: UK Charts: Pokémon Pokopia's Physical Troubles Continue As It Slips From The Podium

@BLK_4EVER
It’s OK to be angry about getting a raw deal, but to go so far as to boycott what would otherwise be an enjoyable form of entertainment because of the format in which it is delivered is astounding to some people.
The vast majority of video games today are digital if you count mobile, PC, and console, so it really is a dying breed of purists saying no. If that’s the hill you want to die on then rest in peace RIP.

Re: Pokémon Pokopia Sales Surpass 2.2 Million Units Globally In First Four Days

kmtrain83

For the time being, the only Switch 2 in our household is "son exclusive" until he goes to college. He said he wasn't interested in this game, although he does play some retro Pokemon.

In terms of the GKC debate, I have posted many times before.
The only thing I would add about that is the people who complain the most about it (assuming they have a Switch 2), almost certainly have an SD expansion card on their Switch 1 and 2. That's really the main thing is you need more storage because GKC = digital as far as that is concerned. Does it really change the calculus? Are people really so bummed about excess plastic or lack of storage?
