UK chart data is now in for the week ending 31st August, revealing that PlatinumGames' Astral Chain has entered the charts right at the very top of the pile.
It managed to beat a number of other newcomers to achieve the feat, including 505 Games' action-adventure title Control. Things were tight between the top four, however, with just 1,500 sales separating the entire group. Astral Chain's success has managed to secure PlatinumGames' first ever number one in the UK, also becoming the studio's second biggest launch for a new IP since Bayonetta.
Elsewhere, Nintendo's presence remains strong with a number of evergreen titles sticking around for another week in the limelight.

Not a bad result for the new title, eh? And thoroughly deserved in our opinion, too.

It's most certainly a deserved top spot. Well done Platinum, Astral Chain is awesome!
I'm still very near the beginning, but it is SUCH a good game. Well deserved, Platinum. I love it!
And very well deserved!!
Not thanks to me I believe I just got it yesterday. I was holding a buy because I don't usually like platinum's gameplay but after watching a few more reviews I decided to bite the bullet and let's say I put 9h in the game yesterday.... Absolutely loving it and don't understand how did people manage to finish it under 15h as after almost 10h I have just started chapter 5 (of 12 I heard)
Bravo! Well deserved! The game is superb!
Wow, fantastic!
quite a shock really given lack of coverage for it here! brilliant
Well deserved and the best game I've played this year so far
Great game and very well deserved. Have you got the actual sales numbers @NintendoLife?
Well done to Ninty for reaching out to Platinum all those years ago to fund Bay2. Astral Chain and hopefully many more great Platinum games on Nintendo will be a product of that first step. I only wish they’d reach out a bit more.
Holy cow, that's quite the feat. Something even Nier on the high selling PS4 couldn't do, all due respect of course. What makes this even more impressive is Astral Chain went up against a few new multiplats.
I'm still trying to figure out why the future police uniform for women is booty shorts. The game looks great in literally every other way, including the top half of the uniform which is all business, and then there's that. Like, what police force ever in all of human history thought booty shorts were a good idea for its equivalent of SWAT officers?
@JasmineDragon
It's a heavily stylized sci-fi game where you control a monster as a weapon. You're looking for realistic clothing styles in the wrong place.
(Also, you can change the clothes in-game)
@beazlen1 Personally, i wish Nintendo would purchase Platinum... But anyway, I think Platinum has developed 5 games published by Nintendo in the past 10 years, which definitely isn't bad
Just got my copy and I'm about to sink my teeth into it!
@Dezzy Thanks, it's good to know you can change it.
This will have to wait for me, I've got Link to the Past LE + Amiibo, Catherine Full Body LE, plus Snake, Squirtle and Ivysaur amiibos this month. The LE of this didn't grab me, even a steelbook would have swung it. So with going with the standard edition, I didn't need to pick it up on day 1, especially as I'm still going through FE.
This is great to see. The game is absolutely superb.
Fantastic, riding high on the Switch eShop too!
Great result for platinum games and well deserved. Great title. That’s gotta be disappointing sales for control though.
The game is fun. But I really really dislike the detective segments. It lowers the pace to a screeching halt.
Its a great game hope they bring out DLCs for it
Awesome! Now quick release The Wonderful 101 on Switch so that gets the attention it deserves too!
not much of competition right now on PlayStation or Xbox side August was a rather quiet month for gaming so not really surprising but at the same time it is because Astral Chain is not the type of game your average Nintendo goes to pick up
Man Oo Medan <- So this game is about Finn the Guy
Good, I still won’t have this game for awhile though. I’ll have it eventually.
It's good to see Platinum doing well in the UK. And, of course, another Nintendo exclusive taking the top spot.
The Switch era continues to be the antithesis of the Wii U era in almost every way.
Give good exciting big games and the UK market will buy it on any system. It is always about the games.
Glad to see control up there also. Hope they make a prequel.
FANTASTIC GAME!
When I eventually get a Switch. I'm definitely getting Astral Chain. Looks like a great game and It will be my first game by Platinum too.
Good job Astral Chain! I'm so happy it's doing well.
@Dellybelly
"...Nintendo big exclusive game sold similar to Wreckfest and Man of Medan, two games not known to wider audiences"
That is actually a pretty good point 🤔 that also busts my bubble on Control 🙄
Hopefully we get concrete numbers with an announcement. Still fun games
Launch numbers:
> Astral Chain: ~10,700
> Wreckfest: ~9,600
> Man of Medan: ~9,350
> Control: ~9,050
Control sold 58% less than Quantum Break, which is...not good. Better hope those EGS PC sales are strong.
Things look certainly promising for this new IP
But, a third-party Nintendo exclusive game, number one on UK? When was the last time that happened?
Noted this one down fron the direct in April and only been more impressed by each bit of gameplay. Great job.
It seems we have one of the review bombers in the comment section, downvotiing the positive comments about this INCREDIBLE game. It must really irk them that they can't play this OUTSTANDING game. Sad!
That PlatinumGames & Nintendo combination is a winning formula!
Hopefully it can maintain sales momentum and continue the trend of Platinum/Nintendo partnerships.
