In today's Nintendo Direct presentation at E3, it was revealed that The Hero from Dragon Quest will be the next DLC character available in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Introduced simply as 'The Hero', the character will actually be available in several different forms. In the flashy trailer shown in the Direct, multiple heroes were shown as alternative costumes, meaning you won't be restricted to a particular hero from just one game.
The Hero will arrive in Summer 2019, available to purchase individually or as part of the Fighter's Pass.

Because unless you're from the future you have no idea how The Hero plays aside from the asine "He has a sword and shield, so he must play like Link!"
Funny, I don't recall any version of Link in Smash having magic, a menu to pick spells which include sleep and zoom as well as a reflector.

The Hero in Dragon Quest games can use other weapons like Spears, Boomarings, and clubs.
But the Sword is their most iconic weapon in any given game.
Just like how Lucina can use Spears and Ike can use Axes but their swords are their main and most iconic weapon.
Are people really so hung up on The Hero using a sword that they ignore everything else about the Character?
If Ryu from Ninja Gaiden gets in, I see this "Another swordsman, how generic!" argument popping up again despite the Dragon Sword being his main weapon and the most iconic one.
Many heroes use swords and they are often their most Iconic and famous weapon.
Honestly, everyone needs to get over it. He has a sword, move on.

The hero looks like a cross between a robin (powerful magic but overuse will render that move useless) and Link (shield and a big sword). The magic spells look hecka powerful, but is has an mp meter. Seeing the spells being varied and hecka powerful, I'm guessing the mp either recovers slowly or not at all to balance the hero's supposedly powerful swordplay.
My main, Robin, is threatening to be replaced....
And the alt's being different heros thoughout the series. Well done, Sakurai!

Look, I didnt want this character in too, but I see way too many people here complaining and saying its another non unique sword fighter...did you even see the trailer? How dense are you to not see half of the moves used?

This is a cool choice. I'm not committing to a fighter pass until we get the full roster, but so far so good.
Seeing a DQ rep like that is a good pick and good representation for the series born since the Famicom days. I approve of the presentation.
The level of complaining is ridiculous. Sure, there are a lot of characters that use swords in Smash, but there are a lot of characters in video games that use swords, so it only makes sense. I’ve never played Dragon Quest myself, but that series is iconic, long lasting and has been on Nintendo platforms for years. It deserves representation in Smash Bros and I’m happy about it. Made me preorder Dragon Quest XI, too.
Makes so much sense for Smash. Dragon Quest XI S could be the biggest Switch game in Japan this year, so it's only right that Nintendo will take advantage of that.
Never was a fan of DQ, so not something I’m excited about. I have to play and test the character for myself when it hits.
It doesn't matter if the character has a sword or not. Every character is mostly the same anyway.
I would have been disappointed if it was just lad from XI. But then they showed several heroes and it made the addition actually meaningful. Much better than Persona.
I loved the reveal but its kind of strange that DQ doesn't have default names for their protagonists. Wish DQ5 was in there.
I wasn't sure if be hyped about this, but having the different heroes as alternative costumes is awesome, and cosmetic aside I'm super interest in their spell/magic attack, looks to have lots of variants and being fun to use.

Oh cool. It's another swordfighter from one of the most influential video game franchises of all time and the creator of the swordfighter hero archetype. The Hero totally doesn't deserve to be in Smash. /s
The alternate heroes for costumes is really cool, wish they had managed to pull that off with Joker even if it didn't fit the gameplay

Thank you Nintendo. I was hoping for this but I didn’t expect them to go all out. I have my new main.
They essentially covered both east and west fans as well as retro and modern. If you are a nes/snes/famicon family/jrpg fan (hi! That’s me) the DQ rep has you excited. If you are into the modern 3d era influencers or a mostly western inclined gamer then Banjo got you going.
It was a one two punch really.
Honestly, as much as I think it's super cool that Banjo is in Smash, The Hero's moveset looks more interesting to me. I think part of the reason that so many people have "sword-user fatigue" is because so many of the sword users have similar movesets. Most of the Fire Emblem sword users' special moves are just...sword swings. Hero looks like his specials will be totally different.

A must buy. But still could be 2 characters I don't like, so with 2 out of 3 that I want so far, I'll have to wait for at least the 4th announcement before I decide between the pass or individual purchases.

Dragon Quest basically invented the gaming Hero archetype. You guys complaining about more "anime swordsmen" should direct your complaint to Fire Emblem (and more specifically, how that series has handled its reps). It's not a 1988 character's fault that Smash picked a bunch of swordsmen before him!
Awesome inclusion for a legendary series, I'm over the moon! (and Banjo-Kazooie is a great pick as well. Can't we all just get along?)
I think this will be a good addition to the fencing sim.

Honestly, I'm so happy, I absolutely love the DQ series and cant wait to play the hero, I've been playing DQ XI and its been a great time, 10/10 would recommend playing a DQ game lol

Also seeing the Magic Points meter and the spells like Snooze and Psyche Up was the icing on the cake
@avocadopear These people are magic swordsmen! The only other ones we have in Smash are Robin, Cloud, and (technically) Ganondorf, although Corrin and Shulk may also qualify. Anyway, it's far from just another swordsman.

But having him as a taunt like Morgana was great
