As part of Nintendo's latest financial report, which revealed that the Switch has now shifted 34.47 million units, the company released an updated list of its best-selling games for the hybrid console.
Sitting right at the very top of the list, currently serving as the best-selling game on Switch, is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The game has already amassed a very tasty 16.69 million sales, which is already almost double the number achieved by Mario Kart 8 on Wii U. Turns out porting Wii U games to Switch was absolutely the right decision.
You can see the full top ten below (bear in mind that the data only references Nintendo-published titles).
Top Ten Best-Selling Nintendo Switch Games (as of 31st March 2019):
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - 16.69 million
- Super Mario Odyssey - 14.44 million
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - 13.81 million
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - 12.77 million
- Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! / Let's Go, Eevee! - 10.63 million
- Splatoon 2 - 8.70 million
- Super Mario Party - 6.40 million
- New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe - 3.31 million
- 1-2-Switch - 2.97 million
- Mario Tennis Aces - 2.64 million
It's worth noting that those numbers above are worldwide sales and include retail, digital, and copies bundled with hardware all combined.
Any surprises? Do you think Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will stay at the top of that list forever, or will something else come along and beat it? Share your thoughts with us below.

Cool numbers. I fully expect Pokemon Sword and Shield will jump very high onto this list after its release. And I imagine Animal Crossing will get on there as well.
5 10-million sellers already is very impressive.
Hm...
My Top 10 Switch games so far, based on gameplay hours :
1. Portal Knights 😀
2. ARMS 😎
3. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
4. LEGO CITY Undercover
5. Go Vacation
6. Yonder the Cloud Catcher Chronicles
7. Super Mario Odyssey
8. Nintendo LABO Toy Con 01 Variety Kit
9. 1-2-Switch
10. Overcooked
Nobody's knocking Kart off that top spot
@Anti-Matter good mix of stuff! An a good reminder for me to pick up a lego game at some Point!
I can't see why Nintendo keep bringing those Wii ports to the Switch...they will never sell.
I really feel like whole bloody world should get Splatoon 2.
Yet, with all them sales, Mario Party still has no extras added to an otherwise fun game! )-:
So 48% of Switch owners bought MK8, right? It was the best seller on Wii U too, though managed a 62% adoption rate over there.
Amusingly Smash Bros hits 40% of owners on both machines. Spooky.
I own every game on the list except the bottom 3 & Pokémon (we're waiting for Sword/Shield). Some of the others my family owns multiple copies (3 copies each of Smash and Splat).
I don't have 1 single regret about any of those purchases either. I've put in enough time to warrant the purchase of Smash, Splat, and Odyssey. I double dipped with Kart because it was my favorite game on the Wii U. But to be honest, I haven't played it as much as I thought I would on the Switch. I would say that we have not justified the purchase of Party yet. I'm also currently finally getting around to playing Zelda! I bought the game a long time ago but always prioritized other games first.
Yoshi’s Crafted World also hit 1.11m sales two days before the report came out, also very impressive
@The_Mysteron considering how quickly smash has sold, i wouldn't be surprised if it eventually outpaces mario kart.
Surprise Mario Tennis Aces is still holding the number 10 slots.
Same as before. Best reason to buy a Switch are still on that list.
@Lowhangers Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze is one of my top 10 favorite games on the NIntendo Switch.
1-2 Switch is still way, way too high on the list. Pokemon and Animal Crossing should easily drop it off the list, haha.
All kidding aside, wow, what a turnaround from the Wii U days. I wouldn't mind if MK 8, started slowing down though. I'm a little concerned that Nintendo won't make a Mario Kart 9, lol.
Also, more people should buy BotW, one of the best games ever made, and it deserves higher numbers than that.
C'mon everybody, ARMS deserves your attention. Pls buy.
Splatoon sold 430 thousands this quarter! At this rate it will pass 10 million by the end of the year
And with Pokémon and Animal crossing coming the switch should hit 9 games with above 10 by the end of the year which will bring it to be the system with the most games to achieve that feat this generation
And Mario maker is very hyped and hit above 5 million on the Wii U, on the switch, with almost 3 times the install base and rising very fast, it might push the Switch to have 10 games with 10 million which is crazy to achieve in a whole life time! Let alone in less than 3 years!
@Lowhangers
It's probably a million-seller, just not in the top 10. I think I read somewhere where there are 23 million-seller games for Switch now?
@MARATXXX
Mario Kart is one of those evergreen titles that will continue to sell for the entire console lifespan. Smash, I think, won't catch it. It's big, but it's not Mario Kart big.
@Lalivero Mario Party is crying out for some DLC. One or two new boards would get me playing again.
Super Mario Maker 2 has a great chance of at least making it to number 4. I personally hope it clenches number 1, but I understand it’s not for everybody. One can dream.
I'm not surprised about MK8D, but what I am surprised by is how quickly Smash passed up BOTW!
@subpopz Only two are on the list, with MK8 having substantial content upgrade and playability different with the ability to store two items. I don't have an issue with the ports. I just wish that they did more like mk8, where you had reason to get it if you already bought it on the WiiU
Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze under Super Mario Party and Mario Tennis Aces is quite sad. Guess people like unfinished lazy games over a 2D platforming masterpiece.
Mario Kart 8 DX FY sales:
2017: 9.22 million
2018: 7.47 million
2019: ?? million
If the game sells another 7 million copies during the new fiscal year, it will be a 23+ million seller in 3 years. Staggering figures for sure.
Pokemon Sword/Shield, Animal Crossing, and Super Mario Maker 2 will join this list by the end of the year.
I really want to dip into Splatoon, but only after I catch up on all of the other must-haves. By that time Splatoon 3 will probably release around 2020~, so I might as well wait.
MK8DX 15.02 million-16.69 million (up 1.67 million)
SMO 13.76 million-14.44 million (up by .68 million)
SSBU 12.08 million-13.81 million (up by 1.73 million)
BOTW 11.68- million-12.07 million (up by1.09 million)
PLG 10 million-10.63 minion (up by .63 million)
Splatoon 2: 8.27 million-8.70 million (up by .47 million)
SMP 5.30 million-6.40 million (up by 1.10 million)
NSMBUDX 0-3.31 million (up by 3.31 million)
1-2 Switch 2.86 million-2.97 million (up by.11 million)
MTA 2.53 million-2.64 million (up by .11 million)
@waluigifan1 probably didn't help that donkey kong tropical freeze is a port of wii u game compared to the others that were new titles.
@Ulysses I think that's doubtful we get another Splatoon on The Switch. If you're waiting on a Splatoon sequel, it's probably going to be another 5 years or so. I'd get it first, it's the best game on that list.
@Lowhangers Probably because people are still playing it on the Wii U and not double dipping.
Wow @ Splatoon 2 closing in on 10m. Who'd have thought!
@Nintendo_Thumb
I disagree. Splatoon being a multiplayer-centric game probably won't take too long to develop, and we're only 2 years into the Switch. I think we're getting a third one before the generation is done.
If Nintendo was planning on Splatoon 2 to last for the rest of the entire Switch lifecycle, then why does the Splatfest/DLC end this year?
In less than 5 months, Smash on Switch has sold more than lifetime sales of Smash on Wii (an insanely successful system). That's pretty interesting to me.
I'm glad Splatoon has been so successful. Such a fantastic game.
I'm looking forward to the day that 1-2 Switch is no longer in the top 10 Switch games 🤦♂️
@Lowhangers If Tropical Freeze had launched at the $30 or $40 price point it should have, it would certainly be on the list. Jacking the price up so drastically compared to the Wii U was a mistake. $10 more than when it released new? And $40 more than the current price on Wii U? I guarantee a lot of people are waiting for the price drop that's obviously coming.
@Pod Arms is still on my radar...
Very disappointed Octopath didn't sell well enough to make this list, game was certainly better than Let's Go (not that Let's Go is bad though). A bit depressing that 3 out of the 10 best selling 'Switch' games are Wii U ports though...
@shoeses
At least they're great games. Would be concerning as well if a bunch of ho-hum games sold much better just because they were new.
Another vote for Arms been the Switch's best game, bought it this week and it is simply awesome! Though, I still love Mario Kart
All well-deserved too in my humble opinion.
So there were 23 million selling Switch games during the 2018 fiscal year. 15 of them were Nintendo published titles, which means the other 8 titles were 3rd party published titles.
My guess is that some of those games include:
> Minecraft
> FIFA 19
> Crash Bandicoot NSane Trilogy
> Diablo 3
> Stardew Valley
I can't think of the other 3 titles. Maybe Overcooked 1/2, Dead Cells, Enter the Gungeon, etc...
Fortnite, Warframe, and Paladins won't qualify as they are all free-to-play, even though those are probably the 3 biggest 3rd party games on the Switch lol
@shoeses I think this list is only 1st party games. Doesn't say that here, but they said it the last few times Nintendo released these numbers. Pretty sure Octopath at least sold 2 million, and that was a while ago.
@Pod Yeah, I'm a little miffed ARMS is not on the top ten anymore too.
@westman98 they also count indies in sales, but no one releases their information, because they're not big companies.
