Re: Random: Sakurai Cut Dolby Surround From Kirby Game To Trim Player Wait Time

@rainbowtick you bought the arcade game Life Force thinking it was the entirely different (albeit related) NES game Life Force and are blaming HAMSTER for your own mistake? Even though there's nothing at all misleading about the screenshots, etc. on its shop page? 🤔

The interfaces of the HAMSTER releases are meh but the emulation quality is good and they have done a remarkable job of bringing literally HUNDREDS of stone cold arcade classics (and plenty of stinkers but i applaud their thoroughness) to the Switch, many of which had never received console releases before HAMSTER did their thing.

Absolutely worth celebrating and it makes sense Sakurai is a fan.

Re: Review: Endless Ocean: Luminous (Switch) - A Meditative Marine Milieu, But Incredibly Shallow

@GreyFenyx that's my impression and I'm baffled at all the people who expected the main appeal of this game to be some kind of very gamey challenge. It's obviously primarily about exploration.

It does sound like even fans of previous endless ocean entries are a bit disappointed by stuff like the procedurally generated environments, but still. The reviews that actually seem to understand that this isn't supposed to be a gamey game are much higher and fairer

Re: Nintendo Apparently Wanted Samus Aran's Fortnite Skin To Be A Switch Exclusive

A large part of why Nintendo's IPs have a unique cultural cache is BECAUSE they are so incredibly protective and picky about it.

This has always been their strategy, and when it comes to the value of their IP, which third parties and merchandise manufacturers continue to clamor for desperately, it has been working for decades.

Loosening that up might be profitable in the short term, but you don't stick around for literal centuries, becoming one of the most powerful entertainment companies ever, by focusing on the short term.

@Poodlestargenerica Just because you haven't heard about a company doesn't mean it's not big or powerful. In fact, a lot of the most powerful corporations in the world are almost anonymous or obscure to the world's general population (Rothschild, Cargill, Tata Motors) or if they are commonly known people have no idea how powerful they are (Comcast, Samsung [obviously powerful but far more than people realize], Clear Channel)

Re: Mother 3 Is Coming To Nintendo Switch Online, But There's A Catch

@Porky "that's not something Nintendo generally tends to do"

There isn't a precedent for this; Nintendo has never offered this specific style of service--games that exist offline on your console but are checked for access. The closest I can think of would be how it shut down the 3ds eshop, but even then, you can still download everything you've ever purchased. That actually requires much more server maintenance than just keeping the check system for NSO in place.

Again, it's not a crazy notion to think they would just cut off access like this, because yeah, money, but you're still speculating and making it sound like you're not.

Re: Mother 3 Is Coming To Nintendo Switch Online, But There's A Catch

@LXP8 tbf, the games live on your console. You can play them entirely offline. They'd only become inaccessible if you don't download them before the servers shut down, or if they make the unnecessarily vindictive move of revoking access to the games for all users on their own consoles. Which is within the realm of possibility i guess

Re: Round Table: Let's Talk About Palworld - Comparisons, Controversy, 'Copying'

I have absolutely no interest in this game, not only does it seem a bit edge-cringe to me, but so much I've heard about the gameplay mechanics is basically everything i hate about modern games.

that said, I'm grateful for its success. hopefully it'll be some kind of wake up call for game freak. not that i think palworld is any kind of threat to the pokemon franchise, but i hope the massive success of this game will start to crack open their eyes to the real desires of their fans and ex-fans, and the wasted potential of their own franchise.

probably not but still.

Re: Soapbox: Game Freak Could Actually Learn A Thing Or Two From Palworld

demacho

Some decent points here but I swear if one more established franchise incorporates unnecessary crafting mechanics just because everybody else is doing, I'm going to commit a crime

IDK why suddenly there was a consensus that gathering a bunch of meaningless materials to accomplish basic tasks is fun. The TM material gathering is tedious enough. The crafting requirements of Zelda nowadays isn't fun, it's just irritating and tedious.

Re: Review: Golden Sun - A Radiant RPG, Once It Gets Going

This was one of the first classic-styled JRPGs I played after mainly playing the GB pokemon games, and it was so good it ruined all those SNES classics for me when i played them later. Not that those games were objectively worse, but I just couldn't wrap my head around why none of those seemed quite as COOL and impressive as this one.

Until the ending. This is basically half a game, narratively speaking. So I'm really excited to dive into the sequel for the first time ever!

The walls of text really are irritating though
