Makes me think of the Andrey Rublev movie STALKER based on the same story. It's way more contemplative and not at all an action movie, but it's one of my favorite movies regardless. If you like this setting, it's worth checking out.
@RubyCarbuncle maybe for your average gaming event but competitive pokemon has always been serious about child friendliness, and it is beyond obvious to anyone competing that this would be over the line. The guy shouldn't be shocked.
Glimpses like this into the management side of game development just goes to show you how insanely massive and involved these undertakings can be. It makes me dizzy.
@Azuris it boggles my mind that people were expecting more out of the humor of the third because the first two were so mind-numbingly badly written. It wasn't even that the jokes were too edgy or crass or anything. They were just really, really not funny. Lowbrow doesn't have to mean low quality, except when it comes to borderlands writing
@CammyUnofficial the physics are all wrong in Banana Mania. The originals felt way weightier and more satisfying, including the sound effects. Just rolling around on a flat surface felt fun and good. And the minigames suffered greatly for those changes; they were awesome on the GameCube
@Not_Soos spanky's quest is actually very good (if obscure), and SCAT is a pretty well regarded shmup. There's definitely a lot of chaff on the service but those two were not great examples
Wait, how much are you taking off that score for being aimed towards people familiar with the series? One might argue that handholding newbies through the plot beats would be a minus, when the game is clearly marketed to fans of the franchise.
@heisnbrg the dlcs were basically entire high quality sequels in their own right, including the fighting game, and were added free for those who had bought the original before the dlc came out. It still blows my mind, and it similarly blows my mind that people don't appreciate that more.
@rainbowtick you bought the arcade game Life Force thinking it was the entirely different (albeit related) NES game Life Force and are blaming HAMSTER for your own mistake? Even though there's nothing at all misleading about the screenshots, etc. on its shop page? 🤔
The interfaces of the HAMSTER releases are meh but the emulation quality is good and they have done a remarkable job of bringing literally HUNDREDS of stone cold arcade classics (and plenty of stinkers but i applaud their thoroughness) to the Switch, many of which had never received console releases before HAMSTER did their thing.
Absolutely worth celebrating and it makes sense Sakurai is a fan.
Idk if this was a worthwhile tradeoff but this kind of bonkers thinking is what makes Sakurai special. He thinks of everything and will try anything, and whether or not it's a successful idea, he put a lot of thought into it and learns lessons from how it goes.
I was so excited for banana mania as SMB1 was my first and one of my top 5 gcn games i owned, and smb2 i liked even better but never owned.
But they used the garbage new Banana Blitz physics engine which just plays so poorly and feels so floaty, messed up the minigames, and removed multi-player for the main game.
Still an enjoyable game but tremendously missed potential.
@Folkloner see, your feedback is actually meaningful here, as you are someone who clearly appreciates what this game is actually supposed to be. You saying this game is disappointing actually means something, as opposed to this reviewer who's mad that this isn't a survival game or whatever.
@GreyFenyx that's my impression and I'm baffled at all the people who expected the main appeal of this game to be some kind of very gamey challenge. It's obviously primarily about exploration.
It does sound like even fans of previous endless ocean entries are a bit disappointed by stuff like the procedurally generated environments, but still. The reviews that actually seem to understand that this isn't supposed to be a gamey game are much higher and fairer
@Samalik The graphics are significantly enhanced enough that the fact that this originated as a gamecube game isn't as relevant than it was for say, the tales of symphonia remaster.
Also, the action prompts are never THAT precise that 60fps would make a significant difference. They're pretty forgiving
60fps is overrated anyway. Useful gameplay-wise for fast-action games, and it can look slick with certain aesthetics. But sometimes it adds nothing aesthetically while compromising other graphical possibilities, and sometimes it actively makes things look weird.
@ninjapenguin1 The problem isn't customers knowing about SBI's involvement, the issue is the customers' reasoning for boycotting a product simply based on this consultant's involvement. Because their reasoning is based in bigotry.
A large part of why Nintendo's IPs have a unique cultural cache is BECAUSE they are so incredibly protective and picky about it.
This has always been their strategy, and when it comes to the value of their IP, which third parties and merchandise manufacturers continue to clamor for desperately, it has been working for decades.
Loosening that up might be profitable in the short term, but you don't stick around for literal centuries, becoming one of the most powerful entertainment companies ever, by focusing on the short term.
@gojiguy same, I'm a major shmuppist and am glad i checked out the demo before purchase, because it's just not a very fun game. And totally agreed on the dramatic dlc.
@Krull yeah that bugged me too, especially as it promotes the idea that turn based combat is an outdated thing. Which is an attitude even square Enix seems to be pushing as far as modern final fantasy games go
@Poodlestargenerica Just because you haven't heard about a company doesn't mean it's not big or powerful. In fact, a lot of the most powerful corporations in the world are almost anonymous or obscure to the world's general population (Rothschild, Cargill, Tata Motors) or if they are commonly known people have no idea how powerful they are (Comcast, Samsung [obviously powerful but far more than people realize], Clear Channel)
@Porky "that's not something Nintendo generally tends to do"
There isn't a precedent for this; Nintendo has never offered this specific style of service--games that exist offline on your console but are checked for access. The closest I can think of would be how it shut down the 3ds eshop, but even then, you can still download everything you've ever purchased. That actually requires much more server maintenance than just keeping the check system for NSO in place.
Again, it's not a crazy notion to think they would just cut off access like this, because yeah, money, but you're still speculating and making it sound like you're not.
Wow this is unexpected and a big one. I hope a lot of players, especially younger ones, discover this and start to realize how mediocre the modern AAA, lootbox/live service model is. The new Battlefront games are shiny beautiful trash.
@LXP8 tbf, the games live on your console. You can play them entirely offline. They'd only become inaccessible if you don't download them before the servers shut down, or if they make the unnecessarily vindictive move of revoking access to the games for all users on their own consoles. Which is within the realm of possibility i guess

This is capitalism, ladies and gentlemen.
The only innovation it truly incentivizes is how to maximize profit.
Great when creating cool, quality things are key to profit.
Awful when ruining things (and people) is also key to profit.
