Re: Review: GoldenEye 007 - Aged And Flawed, But Still A Masterpiece Of Game Design

@robr did you ever play any of those games when they were first released? I'm not saying the nostalgia is the big factor (although it helps) but being familiar with how the games were originally designed to control is. even playing with the switch n64 controller for a while might give you a better idea of how to approach the switch layout controls.

this being said, i think you and i probably agree that the inability to remap buttons at all within the nso n64 application is unacceptable

Re: Review: GoldenEye 007 - Aged And Flawed, But Still A Masterpiece Of Game Design

frankly brilliant review, i agree on all counts. i never owned the game, but played hours upon hours at friends' places, and secretly harbored jealousy over what my parents would have thought was an inappropriately violent game to buy me.

my rec is to swallow your pride and leave auto aim on with a lower difficulty than you might jump to at first. as a kid i didn't even know manual aim was an option, i didn't mess around much with precision aiming or even strafing and as i usually played 3d platformers the stick movement was familiar, and yet the shooting action was still so fun for me and my friends. not stressing about placing your shots perfectly while running around is both more fun and honestly what i think the devs mechanically intended even at higher difficulties. that keeps much of the jankiness of the controls from getting in the way.

you also have to just rely less on fluid sideways movement in general i think, except for specific moments of strafing. trying to slide around like a modern fps is possible but really difficult and basically unnecessary. the level design doesn't really require it for success anyway, at least in single player

Re: Mini Review: Papetura - A Perfectly Crafted, Bite-Sized Puzzle Adventure

I swear to god with people about the length of this. It's a near perfect experience, visually and aurally. Some of the gameplay in terms of controls is a little wonky but the puzzles themselves are brilliant.

Think about it this way. A long game might occupy more of your time. But it also means it can TAKE UP more of your time, and in many instances, waste it. I'm ok paying for a short, aesthetically dense experience especially when so much hand- crafted work goes into it.

Re: Feature: 14 Things That Pokémon Scarlet And Violet Get Absolutely Right

demacho

@Funneefox is it a cope or is it writing an article that presents something to contrast with the ubiquitous articles about the jank?

one of the biggest news stories in gaming right now is the jank of s/v, but at this point there's not anything substantially new to report or even comment on that front. why not write something different about the game?

Re: Konami's Arcade Classics Receiving Limited Run Switch Physical Release, Pre-Orders Open This Week

demacho

@SteamEngenius and all the other items, some of which are pretty substantial... also, as the name suggests this is a LIMITED RUN so this stuff has some rarity value; since these are really popular and historic games i'm sure resale value down the line would be pretty dang high

i'm not saying it's a GREAT price but saying you're paying 160 for "35 year old games that might be worth 10 cents" is real obtuse

Re: Video: The Future Of Gaming Is Joy-Con Drift-Free

demacho

@RadioShadow it isn't. you just got lucky.

not astronomically lucky; i know a handful of people who similarly have never had issues. but i know MANY more who have.

i'd say it's about 1 in 20 people or so that i know of who haven't had drift within the first year of use. My first drift issues came in within weeks.

Re: Hands On: Pokémon Scarlet & Violet's Performance Distracts From Neat New Features And Flourishes

demacho

@rupert_the_giantbear what's especially baffling is that the spinoff games consistently have GREAT visuals. Pokken and New Pokemon Snap are gorgeous. Of course they're developed by different studios. But that just points to how much Game Freak needs a serious shake up in some way. The budget is there to make these games look and play great, why isn't it being utilized?

I've been annoyed with people's constantb whining about the series. but I'm leaning towards joining those voices. this is ridiculous.

Re: Pilotwings 64 For Switch Online Appears To Be Targeting A Higher Frame Rate

demacho

@Edu23XWiiU in general i don't care for the obsession with maxing out frame rates. first off 60fps can sometimes look almost weirdly plasticky in its smoothness, i know it's because we're condition to think of 24fps as "cinematic" but still. more importantly if a game was designed and balanced to be played at a certain frame rate, it can really throw off the look, feel, and even gameplay significantly

Re: Random: Nintendo Confirms How To Pronounce Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom

demacho

let me be real

the idea that it was "tears" and not "tears" was one of the stupidest fan theories i have ever heard

i know there is nothing inherently wrong with theorizing about lore in this way, nobody's hurting nobody, but for some reason i just find it so phenomenally silly and cringey. i guess it's just the idea of people thinking they're a lot more clever than they really are. it's silly in itself for me to feel this way but hey

Re: Hori Reveals The Split Pad Fit For Nintendo Switch, Pre-Orders Now Live

demacho

@fun_mat Who's defending Nintendo? Nintendo didn't make these controllers lol. Hori did.

Missing that functionality does suck but also contributes hugely to the very low price. I do think it would be cool to offer a higher end model that doesn't lack these features but again it inevitably would be much more expensive, more than actual joycons almost certainly. Worth it, probably, but the really low price point results from excluding those and is very nice.

Re: Hori Reveals The Split Pad Fit For Nintendo Switch, Pre-Orders Now Live

demacho

@VoidofLight I agree that the lack of that functionality is a major bummer, but "worthless" is a HUGE exaggeration. The impact of using the Split Pad Pro on the handheld experience is immense; not only does it relieve a LOT of the tension and discomfort in holding the Switch for long periods of time, the buttons, driftless sticks, and especially d-pad are all massive improvements, to the point of making some games that are pretty much unplayable with joy cons (read: any shmup or fighting game) fully playable.

The programmable back buttons and turbo function also don't get enough love.

I find myself yearning for HD rumble and NFC maybe once every 50 sessions. To be able to use them wirelessly in TV mode would be really killer though. But would certainly increase the price significantly.
