I have absolutely no interest in this game, not only does it seem a bit edge-cringe to me, but so much I've heard about the gameplay mechanics is basically everything i hate about modern games.
that said, I'm grateful for its success. hopefully it'll be some kind of wake up call for game freak. not that i think palworld is any kind of threat to the pokemon franchise, but i hope the massive success of this game will start to crack open their eyes to the real desires of their fans and ex-fans, and the wasted potential of their own franchise.
Some decent points here but I swear if one more established franchise incorporates unnecessary crafting mechanics just because everybody else is doing, I'm going to commit a crime
IDK why suddenly there was a consensus that gathering a bunch of meaningless materials to accomplish basic tasks is fun. The TM material gathering is tedious enough. The crafting requirements of Zelda nowadays isn't fun, it's just irritating and tedious.
This was one of the first classic-styled JRPGs I played after mainly playing the GB pokemon games, and it was so good it ruined all those SNES classics for me when i played them later. Not that those games were objectively worse, but I just couldn't wrap my head around why none of those seemed quite as COOL and impressive as this one.
Until the ending. This is basically half a game, narratively speaking. So I'm really excited to dive into the sequel for the first time ever!
@Chaotic_Neutral yes, when i want to actually own it, support the filmmakers more substantially, and not have my access to it dictated by the whims of the distributor.
@samuelvictor eh, don't change the minigame solely out of fear that ppl will perceive it as a clone. if it's fun, it's fun, and as you're saying, it's not a clone, you came up with the idea (even if somebody else did as well). you have just as much right to share that work with pride
@Warioware thematically, definitely. very basic military/scifi stuff. but it just feels so, so good to play. also, all of the many modes of it are varied enough to nearly feel like separate games.
@Warioware also consider the "cave-like" Crimzon Clover. it's truly one of the best shmups ever, on par with cave's best, and also is very accessible. but mushi is also an awesome choice, super fun, accessible but with a very high ceiling. maniac mode on novice difficulty is a great intro to bullet hell, as it has big beautiful curtains of bullets but they move slower than usual so you can get the satisfaction of dealing with that kind of craziness but without too much difficulty.
@Warioware If you have any interest in shooters at all, you MUST at least try this. Perhaps give it a go in super easy mode to get a feel (i haven't tried this release, just the game in an arcade, but super easy in other shotriggers release gives a good feel for the gameplay without being super overwhelming).
and remember that the real rewarding gameplay isn't just about getting from point a to point B, it's about optimizing what you're doing to get the best score. even if you're not trying to beat the world, just topping your own achievements is immensely rewarding. also, largely necessary if you do want to get as far as possible on one credit, as you accumulate lives based on your scoring.
the visual overwhelm is definitely a valid reason to be turned off though. i personally love it, but i will never for a second blame anybody for disliking the sensory overload.
@Quiet2down I was thinking about that possibility. No possible way a creator this capable would be oblivious to the fact that this would get DMCA'd into oblivion. They just wanted to put it out there for as long as possible before the inevitable end.
I mean....... this was honestly a phenomenally stupid thing to do if they didn't expect this to happen. I'm not one to cheer for a giant corporation's win over an independent creator, but at some point, you have to start losing sympathy for the people who keep poking the bear in the eye.
Awards shows in any media industry are such absolute garbage. Just a circle jerk for the power players in the industry that the public is told denotes what things are worthwhile when in reality much of the time it simply denotes what projects are made by the most well connected people.
Of course Aonuma is a power player himself. But this situation is more generally a function of the Game Awards being a stupid giant marketing free for all and not the cultural institution it touts itself as. How could a bunch of marketing/events meatheads understand the importance of letting Aonuma speak?
Space Station Silicon Valley, Buck Bumble, and Iggy's Reckin Balls. My holy trinity of games that i rented and never owned and was obsessed with even though none of them were really that amazing.
@Maulbert I've made this semi-joke before, but they likely won't even rerelease those titles (or the original Battlefronts) in any form whatsoever, simply because they would embarrass all of the mediocre bs EA is passing ofd as Star Wars games
Independent is not a genre or aesthetic. It does not refer to any quality of the game, although of course many indie games do share a lot of qualities.
Independent refers to who made it and how. A subsidiary of Nexon is not independent. Celebrating this as an independent game is an immense insult to those who actually work under the limitations of being an independent developer.
That's not to say this isn't a good game, it seems like it really is. But this is yet another example of awards being entirely meaningless.
Competent director and writing team + Miyamoto's deep investment + how protective nintendo is of zelda unless they're REALLY confident a project deserves the franchise greenlight (moreso than mario) + has nothing to do with Illumination = cautious optimism
let's not forget the russo bros most well known projects pre MCU was some episodes of community
my preschool students love this franchise and it's one of the preschool-age media franchises i actually find genuinely appealing (paw patrol is straight up copaganda). I'm glad there seems to have been genuine effort put into this game
This has been fantastic. Literally a whole new title's worth of tracks, and most of them are really good. The new characters are great too. Just wish they had brought DK Jr. back. Poor guy.
And I wish they had given us the option to keep steer assist off by default. It's so annoying to explain to friends how to make sure it's off. Also, new battle courses would have been nice.
But all in all, for a decadeish old game, it truly has been a gift that keeps giving.
@Darthmoogle I bet they won't do a Rogue Squadron remaster simply bc they won't want to admit that 20+ year old games outstrip the new, AAA EA games in terms of space combat gameplay by an IMMENSE margin lol
jk. i hope. they'd be leaving massive money on the table if they didn't do this.
@Frogspree Every additional frame or sequence of animation is more resources used; NES and SNES didn't have much capacity for a ton of animations for every enemy. Technically the Goombas only really had one frame that they just flipped back and forth for the illusion of walking. Plus, I don't think anybody at the time thought anything was amiss. I certainly didn't, growing up. Goombas were far from the first enemies that damaged a player character on contact, and at the time rarely did anybody bother animating that contact like that.
@LanceOSX the problems bother me on principle more than anything else. the game is still fun in many ways. but I'm just really frustrated that the most profitable creative IP in the world has such little effort and resource put into its core.
I'm OK with this response; "it mysteriously disappeared but nobody really cared" certainly isn't very thorough or super super satisfying, but it is an in universe accounting of the thing and that counts for plenty to me. Sometimes handwaving is enough for me
Ugh. Neon White. never have i looked forward to a game more, enjoyed the gameplay so much, and uninstalled it so fast. i understand the possibility that the dialogue, voice acting, wanname bs was was supposedly, ironically, intentionally cringe but it truly pained me to spend even a second experiencing those characters.
@NintendoJunkie But what specifically were these excessive initiatives you're talking about, and what motivated them? Whose ambitions were the ones that stretched the company beyond its capacity? The employees getting laid off?
Not necessarily trying to argue against what you're saying, but you have not provided any information that contradicts the notion that this was the greed (or, to be more charitable, creative ambitions) of the upper echelons of the company damaging the lives of those actually doing the labor.
