Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Thanks Charles Martinet For Being The Voice Of Mario In Heartfelt Message

demacho

@Not_Soos "fired" is total speculation. he's been doing it for decades. he's an older veteran voice actor now. it may have just as easily been a mutual decision, or entirely Charles'. playing one character for decades is cool, but he may feel it's time to move on.

In any case, the voices in Wonder aren't significantly different in style. So it's not like they were trying to go in a wildly different direction he couldn't handle. And they're keeping him around in a very visible role, so the relationship does not seem to have soured in any significant sense.

You could be right, but you are speculating based on nothing.

Re: Review: The Making Of Karateka - A Great Start For Digital Eclipse's Gold Master Series

demacho

looks awesome.....

i do take exception to the comment that the gameplay is more fluid and exciting than karate champ. it certainly looks smoother, and is easier to grasp, but it's also way shallower, and once you get used to the unique control scheme of karate champ, it's way deeper and more exciting.

also, as a martial artist, i think karate champ is still one of the most faithful gameplay adaptations of point-based karate competition--not necessarily real fighting, but the sport of point sparring. the moves in karateka look great, but the gameplay isn't really that fun imo.

i also unironically love the wild anachronism of this, karate didn't exist before the late 19th century and the typical karate uniform, adapted from the judo uniform, didn't come in until well into the 20th century. but seeing a guy in a karate gi and a samurai helmet will never not delight me

I actually really like a lot of the gameplay and new mechanics, there are some great ideas that work really well. But the performance issues are truly abysmal, and even when running smoothly the visuals are downright primitive and even something of a downgrade from the 3ds games, and incredibly frustrating given this is literally THE MOST PROFITABLE IP IN THE WORLD. If i were game freak i'd be straight up embarrassed.

I normally think it's silly to complain about occasional framerate drops in a non-action game, but I've been keeping my mouth shut on this one lately. it's truly embarrassing.

Re: Review: Sonic Origins Plus - Not Bad, But Sonic Still Deserves Better

demacho

glad i never got rid of my copy of sonic mega collection for the gamecube, which had basically all of the sonic genesis games worth playing (1-3, knuckles, plus the knuckles versions of 2 and 3, 3d blast, spinball
) some other games such as flicky and ristar, plus tons of bonus content, comics, art, videos, etc.

no sonic cd or the other weirder games but those were on the follow up, sonic gems collection.

except...... sonic games have never been that great to begin with 🤷 i liked sonic advance and adventure 2 was fun, but largely because i was young enough to ascribe my frustrations with the gameplay to my own incompetence rather than the fact that it was frankly terribly designed

Re: Chris Pratt Defends "The Voices" In The Mario Movie

demacho

@TheBigBlue This take is getting old. Charles Martinet is one of the most experienced voice actors in the world, and Mario (and all other Nintendo characters) are far from his only credits. Do people seriously think such an industry vet would lack the capacity to attenuate his performance for a feature length project?

Chris Pratt on the other hand has basically zero VO experience, and every clip featuring him shows that.

EDIT someone has pointed out that Pratt has been in a few animated things including the Lego Movies which I actually really liked him in. So scratch that bit of my diatribe. But my point still stands. Charles Martinet is a professional VO actor who's been in the business since Pratt was a literal child. Martinet would know how to voice a feature character.

Re: Mario Movie Directors Explain Their Take On Princess Peach

@GooseLoose1 oh I'm used to it. i just hate it.

I'm not gonna assume she's gonna be awful though. she's a good actor. i just haven't liked what I've heard so far in the trailers. whereas I've loved everything jack black and Charlie day have showed so far as bowser and Luigi.

and, obviously, kids dgaf about a star studded voice cast. many adults do though. but even if that weren't the case, just having the name up there just helps the movie's marketing stick. amy poehler was in some pidgeon movie like a decade ago. don't remember jacksht about it except for seeing her name on the billboard and going "huh. interesting."

never saw it and it was probably bad, but here i am, 10 years later, mentioning it, because she was on the poster 🤷

Re: Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Version 1.2.0 Is Now Live, Here Are The Updated Patch Notes

demacho

@RainbowGazelle the fact that they needed these fixes in the first place is a disgrace. but even more than that, the battle animations are unacceptably bad, inferior even to the 3ds animations in many cases. How difficult can it be to animate a pokemon making contact for a simple Tackle or Peck?!?!

At least the gameplay is IMO actually really good, i like the open world structure a lot and the new twists to the battles are good. and the new pokemon designs are quite good as well.

Re: Review: GoldenEye 007 - Aged And Flawed, But Still A Masterpiece Of Game Design

demacho

@robr did you ever play any of those games when they were first released? I'm not saying the nostalgia is the big factor (although it helps) but being familiar with how the games were originally designed to control is. even playing with the switch n64 controller for a while might give you a better idea of how to approach the switch layout controls.

this being said, i think you and i probably agree that the inability to remap buttons at all within the nso n64 application is unacceptable

Re: Review: GoldenEye 007 - Aged And Flawed, But Still A Masterpiece Of Game Design

demacho

frankly brilliant review, i agree on all counts. i never owned the game, but played hours upon hours at friends' places, and secretly harbored jealousy over what my parents would have thought was an inappropriately violent game to buy me.

my rec is to swallow your pride and leave auto aim on with a lower difficulty than you might jump to at first. as a kid i didn't even know manual aim was an option, i didn't mess around much with precision aiming or even strafing and as i usually played 3d platformers the stick movement was familiar, and yet the shooting action was still so fun for me and my friends. not stressing about placing your shots perfectly while running around is both more fun and honestly what i think the devs mechanically intended even at higher difficulties. that keeps much of the jankiness of the controls from getting in the way.

you also have to just rely less on fluid sideways movement in general i think, except for specific moments of strafing. trying to slide around like a modern fps is possible but really difficult and basically unnecessary. the level design doesn't really require it for success anyway, at least in single player

Re: Mini Review: Papetura - A Perfectly Crafted, Bite-Sized Puzzle Adventure

demacho

I swear to god with people about the length of this. It's a near perfect experience, visually and aurally. Some of the gameplay in terms of controls is a little wonky but the puzzles themselves are brilliant.

Think about it this way. A long game might occupy more of your time. But it also means it can TAKE UP more of your time, and in many instances, waste it. I'm ok paying for a short, aesthetically dense experience especially when so much hand- crafted work goes into it.

Re: Feature: 14 Things That Pokémon Scarlet And Violet Get Absolutely Right

demacho

@Funneefox is it a cope or is it writing an article that presents something to contrast with the ubiquitous articles about the jank?

one of the biggest news stories in gaming right now is the jank of s/v, but at this point there's not anything substantially new to report or even comment on that front. why not write something different about the game?

Re: Konami's Arcade Classics Receiving Limited Run Switch Physical Release, Pre-Orders Open This Week

demacho

@SteamEngenius and all the other items, some of which are pretty substantial... also, as the name suggests this is a LIMITED RUN so this stuff has some rarity value; since these are really popular and historic games i'm sure resale value down the line would be pretty dang high

i'm not saying it's a GREAT price but saying you're paying 160 for "35 year old games that might be worth 10 cents" is real obtuse

Re: Video: The Future Of Gaming Is Joy-Con Drift-Free

demacho

@RadioShadow it isn't. you just got lucky.

not astronomically lucky; i know a handful of people who similarly have never had issues. but i know MANY more who have.

i'd say it's about 1 in 20 people or so that i know of who haven't had drift within the first year of use. My first drift issues came in within weeks.
