@NotSoCryptic @NorthwestEagle @JackieCMarlow LXIG has an in-depth explanation on its site detailing its use of the term and its intentions behind it. They use it, as we have, as an inclusive umbrella for however individual community members identify — it's not intended to erase or ignore anything.
This topic (naturally) generates passionate opinions, so I'd remind everyone in the comments to proceed with respect and consideration of our Community Rules. Thanks in advance.
@JohnnyMind That... huh, wasn't there yesterday. Could be gremlins, or perhaps a tab-switch-forward-delete snafu when I edited the title. Likely gremlins. Either way, thanks for the spot.
@TotalHenshin @TotalHenshin It should, zapped. Something about the title on this one sends twists my melon for some reason. Spud and Beans, Slap and Bud, it doesn't want to stay in there!
@SteamEngenius Can we stop with the negative, conspiratorial rubbish, please? We’re not a print mag with a page quota to fill. If we don’t have enough letters, I’ll just make it shorter, skip a month, or nix the whole thing.
@Anti-Matter Anything, really, as long as it’s game or site-related. And short.
@-wc- "Misinformation"? "Disinformation"? Erasing the sequels' contributions??
This game is based on the SNES original and the comparison is quite clearly being drawn between that and this new reworking of it. That's the context here. Not listing off the features of the sequels hardly qualifies as 'misinformation' now.
@censwordship The fact you hadn't heard of this one is precisely why we're reviewing it! We've had eleven reviews go live in the past seven days, spanning multiple genres, from the biggest series on the planet to tiny indie releases like this that could easily pass people by.
We can't cover everything, but we do our best to highlight as broad a spectrum of games as we can. Out of interest, what games do you feel like we're missing?
@DarkTron So, Sabotage reached out and offered us cold hard cash to feature its game in our little community box art poll, is that it? There's no way we conveniently chose a recently released Switch game we're all playing and enjoying for which there's different box art between regions? Because it's never happened before??
@OldManHermit @bstoppel Weirdly, that seems to be just for the trailer. The music is present and correct in the game itself. I've added a note just below the video in the article.
@progx What Nintendo chooses to add in its weekly updates seems to be... inconsistent! Various other games listed above are also launching on 17th. It's possible anything downloadable before the next eShop update PR is sent out on Thurs 17th is included, but I imagine it depends on what info is in the eShop database at the time. For instance, there may be games launching Mon/Tue/Wed next week which aren't finalised, so they'll appear on next Thursday's update.
@Kasparius It's absolutely not that I don't want to hear it! And I'm not saying you're an outlier, either — I'm totally open to criticism and suggestions, that's why I'm asking you about it. I'm just trying to explain the rationale behind these inclusions/exclusions.
With the 100 Best Nintendo Games list, we ended up with just Wind Waker HD and Ocarina / MM 3DS as dupes, all of which (for me) added significant features and upgrades to warrant their own entries. Same with Pokémon Crystal (eg. GBC-only, first female avatar in the series, added features, etc).
@Kasparius These reader-ranked lists are based on user ratings for each individual release in our database, so combining all versions into a single entry isn’t possible without actively excluding one version or another, or limiting the options with a simple poll.
The parameters are explained in the intro, and I do feel that there are notable differences between versions, despite them being essentially ‘the same’ underneath. If people want to know which version of, say, Pikmin 2 rates highest according to NL readers, that info is above. You’d lose that by distilling all the versions into a single entry, which I’d call a downside.
@EarthboundBenjy Ha, my point is that the way our User Rating system works, the order of the others is unaffected if you exclude something, for any reason. Eg. If there are spin-offs/remasters included in a list and you don’t personally think they should be there, imagine that they’re not and the order of the others doesn’t change.
@Kasparius So what would you propose? Just include the originals? I think there’s value in including the Switch versions (the ones readily accessible today) as a comparison point, even if it’s a bit ‘messier’. If you do just want to count the OGs, the info is all there.
@Kasparius I get where you’re coming from, but what’s the solution? Include only the original releases? Only the Switch versions? A generic catch-all for each entry, despite their different iterations?
As explained in the intro, presenting all of them let’s you compare the different versions of the same game within the overall list, which I think is pretty illuminating (the Switch version of Pikmin 2 seems to be the least liked right now, for example). And if there are ones you wish weren’t there, you can pretend they aren’t and the remaining order is preserved as is.
@Rambler I would hope it does, and compared to other companies I think Nintendo's archival practices are relatively robust.
The point is that Nintendo itself cannot and must not be the sole caretaker of the historically significant works it has created. There needs to be a legal avenue to archiving these materials that isn't overseen by a publicly traded company with interests outside documenting the work for the sake of posterity.
@Tourtus It's like the original, except a bit stiffer (probably just because they're new). Takes some time to break in. You can use them for other games, although compatibility varies due to button differences.
Okay, we'll be locking the comments on this now. Thanks to everyone who contributed positively. Our Community Rules are available to review at any time if you need to refresh your memory concerning what is and isn't acceptable to post in our comments sections. Thank you.
@Scraggly1 I subbed an adjective you’ve used into our existing headline, that’s all. I’m trying to understand if it’s the word choice or the construction that strikes you as clickbait. For me, the headline absolutely delivers on its promise.
We can go the other way if you like, with your sentence and our adjective:
‘Check Out These Brilliant Elephant Mario Drawings’
@Scraggly1 You’re suggesting that a Nintendo enthusiast site shouldn’t express enthusiasm for Nintendo topics in its headlines. Do you not agree these qualify as ‘brilliant’ examples of fan art?
You’ve added positive subjective opinion in two of your own examples. Are they less ‘baity’ because the adjectives aren’t strong??
‘Artists Are Already Creating Elephant Mario Fan Art And It's Well-Crafted’
Having investigated the history here, this situation appears not unlike several others that have come to light in the games industry in recent years, unfortunately. I agree, there's a troubling wider context here that needs highlighting.
I've added text that explicitly mentions that context for anyone potentially interested in the game, including a link to an article detailing the allegations in-depth.
Situations like this are complex, especially when it relates to games (and any media, for that matter) with which people have formed personal connections prior to revelations and allegations like this. Hopefully, having presented the available info, anyone reading will be better equipped to decide if they wish to support the developer in this specific case.
Okay, we'll be closing the comments on this article now. Thanks to all who contributed positively. Our Community Rules are available to review for anyone who may need reminding.
@PinderSchloss We're a Nintendo-focused site, and this is arguably the biggest Nintendo release of the last five years! A huge number of people are extremely excited and interested to read about TOTK and discuss and debate it here, us included. If that's not you, no problem — the articles are easy to avoid.
If you're vexed by multiple Zelda articles a day, I respectfully suggest that taking a break from NL for a few weeks might be best. We've got plenty of Zelda 'counterprogramming' lined up, but this is a huge deal and we're all excited for it.
@gurtifus This is very clearly a walkthrough guide for the game. It's labelled as such, and we've even put a spoiler warning at the top in case you somehow accidentally click on it!

@Hajilee This is a Nintendo-focused site, and there's a new Zelda game launching on Friday. TOTK is arguably the biggest release on Switch since 2017. We've always posted articles of all types, not just straight news, so OF COURSE we'll be doing so with Zelda.

@TheBigBlue "I think it’s safe to say that at least one editor is a fan" — It is safe to say that! Just me, though. Nobody else on staff can stand it.
@mariomaster96 'Some' is italicised in the article. I think it's pretty clear from that and the context of the article that there are lots of question marks here.
