Re: Review: The Outbound Ghost - A Heartfelt But Ultimately Thin Paper Mario-Like

dartmonkey

@Bunkerneath The game launched this month and will be of interest to readers who are Paper Mario fans, hence the review.

The relationship status of the developer and publisher and all the drama around the launch (which we linked to coverage of in the review text) ultimately can't factor into our assessment of the game itself. It's available to purchase on the Switch eShop, and this is our verdict on that product.

Re: Review: Front Mission 1st: Remake - Impressive Visuals, But A Slog On The Battlefield

dartmonkey

@Wisps We absolutely welcome constructive criticism and questions in the comments, but I wouldn't class "Where do you get these reviewers and what is their background with the games they are playing....." as such.

In this instance, perhaps an optional ability to target specific areas would have been a good addition to a remake that has been modernised in various other ways. Trent's suggestion that you might knock the difficulty down so as not to miss out on other stronger parts of the experience is naturally a personal take — as is the entire review. He finishes up by clarifying that uberfans of the original and genre devotees may find more to like about it, which simply means he expected more from this remake, not that he hates the game or TRPGs.

Anyhow, I've got nothing more to add. I just wanted to address this odd sentiment that a reviewer is somehow 'wrong' for the game because they weren't enamoured with a core element of it. If you enjoy the RNG, great! You'll likely want to add points to the score above. That doesn't invalidate their opinion of someone who didn't enjoy it.

@Herna Tactics Ogre got a 7/10, hardly "craptastic".

Re: Review: Front Mission 1st: Remake - Impressive Visuals, But A Slog On The Battlefield

dartmonkey

Trent's got plenty of experience with TRPGs, and the review states clearly the elements of this particular one that he didn't get on with. A 5/10 is 'Average', which aligns with his overall thoughts. It's fine to disagree, but let's not start calling into question his appropriateness for the review because you disagree with his opinion, please.

@dluxxx What TRPGs have we been hating on?

Re: Review: Rogue Legacy 2 - A Roguelike Legend Returns In Fine Form

dartmonkey

@Snatcher I adore the first one, my personal game of 2020 or whatever year it was when I finally caught up with it! Having played about an hour of this so far, I'd say you may as well start here - the basic setup is very similar, just further refined and polished.

Then again, you can get the first one very cheap these days, so if you had any doubts at all, it might be an idea to try that and see how you like it first.

Re: Site News: So, Where's Our Sonic Frontiers Review?

dartmonkey

@MarioBrickLayer That's an interesting idea, although publishers sometimes stipulate that you can't indicate you have review code in the first place, which would make any reviews-in-progress list incomplete.
We have asked for 'Reviews We Missed' nominations in the past, perhaps that could return in some form during a quieter period!

Re: Best Resident Evil Games Of All Time

dartmonkey

A quick reminder to everyone that many of the games above are extremely close in NL user ratings terms! Just a handful of ratings could quickly change the complexion of the entire list. RE2 is #1 at the time of writing but RE4 is snapping at its heels.

It's going to be very interesting to see how things have changed in the morning

Re: Random: Mickey Mouse's Murderous Eyes In Disney Dreamlight Valley Have Been Fixed

@Deviant-Dork Hi. I've reviewed the tweet in question and, as I read it, it references the rumour that Walt Disney was an antisemite as the basis for a joke. I can't see how the tweet itself could be interpreted as antisemitic. However, on the basis that there may be a context/reference here that I'm unfamiliar with (and therefore overlooking), I've replaced the embed with an alternative.
Please use the contact form if you wish to discuss this further. Thank you.

Re: Back Page: All The Pokémon From Scarlet And Violet So Far, Ranked From Worst To Best

dartmonkey

@SlowPokemon @Travisemo007 Hi I definitely understand the desire to stay as spoiler-free as possible, but when The Pokémon Company itself has plastered images all over social media and Youtube with the announcement, the toothpaste is out of the tube, no? Obscuring lead images or omitting key details from headlines for fear of spoilers would lead to outcries of another kind, I'm sure.
We are always thinking about how best to approach new reveals in headlines and images (you'll note we're sticking only to officially revealed information with our coverage, too). We are considering backend options that might give users more options over this sort of thing in the future.
With less than a month to launch, I don't imagine we'll see too many more dex details, but TPC has been fairly upfront with announcing reveal events ahead of time, so I can only recommend exercising caution over the next few weeks!

Re: Random: Zelda Texture Bug Explains Ocarina Of Time & Majora's Mask Deku Difference

dartmonkey

@Impoh While we welcome constructive criticism and feedback, your comment history for the past month repeatedly shows open disdain for NL's articles and writers. This post, clearly labelled 'Random', examines a tiny detail we think will interest Zelda fans, because it interested us. We'll continue writing such posts, in addition to the wealth of other articles we publish on a daily basis.
If you care to offer further feedback regarding the site, its staff, or any other related matter, I encourage you to use the contact form at the bottom of the page. This would be more appropriate than repeatedly leaving comments voicing disapproval of articles that other readers appreciate and enjoy. Thank you.

Re: Review: Let's Sing ABBA - La Question C'est Voulez-Vous

@CANOEberry

  • I played using the smartphone app. I wanted to test a couple of old wired Rockband mics, but I can't find the Wii Sports bowling ball bag I'm 99% sure they're inside.
  • There's not a single person on staff who doesn't have perfect pitch and incredible tone. It's part of the interview process, in fact. Ask Jim.
  • 'to blag (something)', to get something that you wouldn't/shouldn't have under normal circumstances, usually by employing a trick, or through sheer charisma. Eg. "I didn't have tickets to the concert, but I blagged my way in by telling the security guard I was friends with the band."

Re: Feature: We Take The Fan-Created 'Super Mario Bros. 5' For A Spin

dartmonkey

@Devann Hi there Firstly, there are a great many brilliant Mario Maker creations we haven't been able to cover! This one happened to catch our eye when it flared up on social media, and we decided to check it out and reach out to the creator.

As to our not responding to your submission, my apologies. Searching back, I see you contacted us in April 2020. We get a huge number of emails and, unfortunately, we're not able to respond to all of them.

Re: Game Journalist Doubles Down On Zelda News At Upcoming Nintendo Direct

dartmonkey

@ThePizzaCheese We’re constantly evaluating what we cover and how we approach a story, especially when it comes to rumours. Believe it or not, there are a great many we don’t cover! Whether Grubb is right or wrong (or somewhere in the middle) in this specific case, as I said before, we believe his record and the new details mentioned make this worth bringing to readers’ attention.

@XenoShaun Yep, that list is a little out of date but I feel it illustrates a strong batting average overall. Plus, Jeff himself addresses and explains quite frankly some of his misses, too.

@hymbii6 They are indeed tricky! Finding a balance with coverage is challenging and with so many rumours flying about, there’s a lot of behind-the-scenes investigation and deliberation as to exactly what we cover. Ultimately though, it all comes down to veracity and reader interest. 🙂

Re: Game Journalist Doubles Down On Zelda News At Upcoming Nintendo Direct

dartmonkey

@gcunit Jeff Grubb is a well-known and respected figure in the games media with a very solid (not perfect, but solid) record when it comes to vg rumours and leaks. The extra information he shared will be of interest to Nintendo fans, hence why we published this follow-up to the previous article. Establishing his journalistic credentials here didn't feel necessary, but I appreciate the honest feedback. Perhaps fewer readers are aware of Grubb's background and track record than we thought.

If you wish to discuss it further, the contact form at the bottom of the page would be most appropriate. Thanks.

Re: Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection - The New Gold Standard For Retro Compilations

dartmonkey

@nymbosox @Krambo42 I wrote a (very general and simplified) summary explaining it in a news post a couple of years back, might be helpful!

"For anyone not up on their netcode lingo, rollback netcode (as opposed to delay-based netcode) is often favoured by fighting game fans for a more satisfying, snappier online experience. In a nutshell, delay-based netcode delays updating the game state until player inputs have been received from wherever around the world they've been sent, and is therefore very susceptible to network fluctuations and often results in a chugging experience for both players - far from ideal in a fighting game.

"Conversely, rollback netcode does things differently; it logs when inputs are received and adjusts (or 'rolls back') each player's simultaneous game state to match. This can result in players appearing to 'teleport' as new input info is received, and can also lead to desyncing between each player's games, but generally offers a smoother online experience."

Re: Best Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Games On Nintendo Systems

dartmonkey

@Jmjfrank Ah, thanks — I tweaked the line. 👍

@MasterGraveheart Ha, yep. Different reviewers will obviously have different tastes, but every so often I’ll come across a vintage review score that makes me double-take! 😄

@Fiyaball Oof, thanks. I’ll look into this in the morning.

Re: Poll: So, Wave Race 64 Or Blue Storm - Which Is Best?

dartmonkey

@LivingLegend It’s a timely weekend poll to hopefully foster some lighthearted community chat about a couple of great Nintendo video games. Just a little bit of fun amongst the myriad scandals, online outrage, and negativity.

On topic, it’s got to be Wave Race 64 for me! As one of my first dozen or so 3D game experiences, it was a real Keanu ‘woah’ moment. It seemed impossible that a game like this could exist outside of an arcade.

Re: Best Mario Kart Games Of All Time

dartmonkey

@DK-Fan I missed that out-of-date detail when editing the Tour text, it’s been a while since I played it. I’ve tweaked the entry now. As the entry (and review) says, we liked the game — we hardly jumped on the “hate bandwagon”!

@Screen We do our best to keep lists updated — let me know what you’re referring to and I’ll take a look.
