Re: Best Nintendo Switch Sports Games

dartmonkey

@YoshiFlutterJump I’ve added a mention of 22 and updated a couple of other entries. For anyone wondering where Switch Sports and MLB The Show are, we scored them both 6/10. While enjoyable, they don’t quite make the cut for the best Switch sports games. Check out our reviews for more details. 👍

Re: Review: PAC-MAN MUSEUM+ - A Gaming Legend's Best Collection Yet

dartmonkey

A compilation review encompassing multiple titles will by its nature always have a focus on the overall package and presentation of the games rather than comprehensive dissections of each included game. You're free to politely disagree with Tom's necessarily brief assessments of the individual entries, but insults and unfounded accusations won't be tolerated.
Please refer to our Community Rules for more information, or use the contact form below if you wish to discuss the matter further.
Let's return to discussion of the game.

Re: Review: Snow Bros. Nick & Tom Special - A Tired Bubble Bobble-Alike That's Finally Affordable

dartmonkey

While you're welcome to disagree with our review in the comments, I'd like to remind everyone of our Community Rules, specifically 3c. concerning feedback and criticism — insulting authors will not be tolerated.

While you may not agree with the opinion, that doesn't invalidate this review. If you utterly adored the original game, you'll likely find more to like about this version than Stuart did, which would be the same with any remaster or remake. As with all reviews, this is a subjective evaluation. Please be polite if you feel the need to disagree.

Re: Feature: Just How Accessible Are Switch Games Like Xenoblade, Pokémon, And Mario Odyssey?

dartmonkey

@SapphireBlaze This is something we're looking at internally as we evaluate and modify our approach to reviews. We obviously want to provide as much useful info as possible and accessibility features are often lost among other details. We're considering various more elegant, quick-glance solutions than, for example, mandating an accessibility paragraph for every review.
It may take a little time, but watch this space.

Re: Reggie Fils-Aimé Wanted The 3DS To Launch At $199, But Was Rebuffed

dartmonkey

Good morning all

To everyone who has complained about the number of Reggie-related articles we've run this week, I addressed our reasoning in the comment linked below:

https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2022/05/reggie-fils-aime-recalls-touching-advice-he-received-from-the-late-satoru-iwata#comment6965996

TL;DR, the ex-president of NoA wrote a book that spends half its length discussing interactions with Nintendo luminaries and his time at the company, so naturally we — a Nintendo site — are going to cover several of the revelations.

This is the last of our planned Reggie stories, so Reggie content on NL should now resume normal levels.

Yours,
Gavin

Re: Reggie Fils-Aimé Recalls Touching Advice He Received From The Late Satoru Iwata

dartmonkey

@Not_Soos @Zyph @The_BAAD_Man @nocdaes

I appreciate not wanting to have the book 'spoiled' (and we're conscious of overdosing on Reggie), but we're a Nintendo site and the ex-president of Nintendo of America has just released a book which discusses many details of his time at the company. Of course we're going to cover it thoroughly!

If you're looking forward to discovering these nuggets for yourself, I'd recommend avoiding anything with 'Reggie' in the headline for a few days, here and elsewhere. However, we're nearing the very end of our coverage, so Reggie-related content will soon return to normal levels.

And rest assured that the book contains plenty of good stuff that we're not highlighting.

Re: Mini Review: Waifu Impact - Single-Player 'Fortnite With Fan Service', Minus The Fun

dartmonkey

@nessisonett While I understand the general sentiment, the huge number of games releasing each week makes it impossible to cover everything we'd like to. We do our best to review as many games as we can across all genres, taking into account as wide a range of tastes and interests as possible. In the first 117 days of 2022 we've reviewed nearly 100 games, far more than most other outlets, I'd wager.

@Astral-Grain As we've explained before, a high volume of comments rarely means high traffic — it typically means the same small group bickering and bumping the comment count into three figures.

As for the number of "cheap lewd" games we review and apparently prioritise, the number of 'fan service' games on eShop far outweighs the tiny percentage we've reviewed. I'm honestly not sure what we've done to deserve your insinuation that we're giving them low scores on a whim, either.

Have a good weekend all.

Re: Poll: What's The Best Star Fox Game?

dartmonkey

@russell-marlow I mean, 'objectively good game rankings' don't exist. In fact, you could argue that the closest you can get is an aggregated list like ours, taking the opinions of many people into account.

As for whether Adventures is a spin-off or not, again that's all subjective. The beauty of our User Rating lists is being able to mentally remove any game that doesn't meet your personal criteria and the data behind the other entries' remains entirely untouched and intact.

Re: Poll: What's The Best Star Fox Game?

dartmonkey

@russell-marlow We’re presenting all the options and polling opinion, asking readers to rate the games they’ve played, as the intro explains and as we’ve done with various other series in the past. Just a bit of anniversary fun.

Not sure where you get the idea that ‘most’ of our staff aren’t fond of Assault, but no matter. Perhaps it’s our “basic sensibilities”.

Re: Mini Review: The Last Friend - Fantastic, Fast-Paced Tower Defense, With Pettable Good Boys

dartmonkey

@Bakajin I mean, that’s just demonstrably untrue, isn’t it?

@Highlar Our scoring policy is linked just under the score, which delineates between the different bands. A 10/10 game delivers something genre-defining or incredibly fresh/surprising. There can also be an element of ‘You NEED TO try this, even if you normally hate Genre XYZ!’

Re: Random: Bloodborne Kart Is Real, And It's Coming "When It's Ready"

dartmonkey

@nessisonett @anoyonmus It's a fun Random piece about a cool-looking game. Mario Kart practically invented the genre, and with a site full of video game fans, we thought this would raise a few smiles on a Friday afternoon.

It's clearly labelled with the 'Random' prefix, and you're under no obligation to read or comment if it doesn't interest you or isn't 'Nintendo' enough. We think it's cool, but there are plenty of other things to enjoy on the site if you don't agree.

Re: Hogwarts Legacy Is Apparently Coming To Nintendo Switch

dartmonkey

@Not_Soos I take your point and it was heartening to see the conversation remaining civil for the most part. Unfortunately, that is often not the case and seeing that this is a big game that we'll be covering again in the future, we feel it's important to establish some ground rules from the off and not have every article on the game descend into the same debate. The last thing we want to do is close comments on all related articles.

Re: Hogwarts Legacy Is Apparently Coming To Nintendo Switch

dartmonkey

Hello all. In case you missed it, we have pinned a comment at the start of the thread kindly requesting that conversation stays on the topic of the game itself rather than the wider issues and controversy surrounding the author of the Harry Potter novels.

We understand that, for some, the two are inextricably linked but — as we outline in the pinned comment — we feel that this article is not the appropriate place for that wider conversation. Please focus discussion here on the game itself.

Re: Review: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass Wave 1 - A 'Safe' Start To The 48-Track DLC Pack

dartmonkey

@Mattock1987 In this case the opposite of 'safe' would be closer to 'daring' or 'exciting'. As Tom says, the addition of new elements would have spiced things up a bit. Then again, these are the easier introduction courses. Hopefully we'll see some more ambitious tracks in the coming waves.

@Twonips Yeah, it's a little confusing — you have to head to the Switch eShop to get access to it:

Re: Devs Speak Out Against Crunch Culture At LEGO Star Wars Developer TT Games

dartmonkey

@ChakraStomps @Scapetti and others. This is a report based on a feature published on Polygon. It doesn’t include every single quote from Polygon’s article because it would be impractical and, frankly, impolite to strip every single quote from the original article and reproduce the lot. We’d encourage you to read the original story for the most possible context and hear voices from many of the people involved. As you’ve read above, several TT leavers have gone to work for Burton’s new studio, which also suggests something about him and his management style.

On the anonymity of sources as an indicator or reliability, that’s just inaccurate, isn’t it. Quality journalism of all kinds frequently relies on sources speaking on condition of anonymity, commonly for fear of reprisal or for legal reasons that would otherwise prevent them talking. To suggest a story is immediately invalid simply because quotes are from anonymous sources is nonsense.

Finally, to suggest that it would only be ‘news’ if Nintendo posted about it on their official channels is, quite obviously, ludicrous. I’m going to assume that’s a joke of some sort.

In addition to all the usual feel-good programming and gaming coverage we publish (the stuff we absolutely love reading and producing which forms the heart of the site) we will continue to report on stories big and small like this one that gives insight to the blood, sweat and tears — positive and negative — that goes into making the games we love.

If commenters can’t accept this and are unable to either converse politely or keep quiet, we’ll be forced to lock the thread. I’d much rather leave the comments open, so please consider carefully what you’re posting and make sure it conforms to our Community Rules before hitting the reply button. 🙏

Re: Nintendo Download: 30th December (North America)

dartmonkey

@Johnno137426 Generally it's one of the larger releases, so it's obvious. The images are normally named accordingly, too, so hovering a cursor over it (or tapping and holding as if to save on mobile) should reveal the title. The one above is from Hollow 2.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Life's Alternative Game Awards 2021

dartmonkey

@ophone Logistics, mainly. Things have to be pretty much finalised by mid-December before people start heading off on holidays, and GOTY interest falls off a cliff in January, unfortunately.

That's one of the great things about our reader-ranked GOTY list, though — it's a dynamic list and there's absolutely nothing stopping Chicory or any other 2021 game popping onto the list if it gets the requisite ratings.

Re: Sakurai Believes He Was Able To "Fully Complete" Iwata's Final Mission

dartmonkey

@RubyDevilNine We cover interesting stories as and when we're able, depending on a variety of factors (staffing and priority of other articles, for example). If a story isn't particularly time sensitive, we may well put it to one side and cover it at a later date. That's it, that's the 'inside scoop'.

We try to cover as much as possible in a timely manner, but there's only so many hours in the day. If you've read about something before, you're not obliged to read our reporting! The headline clearly communicates the content, so feel free to skip if that's the case. Plenty of other articles to read.
