Recently we were invited down to Nintendo's UK headquarters by Ubisoft – we can only assume they got permission first – to have a bash at the upcoming strategy bwaaah-athon that is Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope.
We sat down and were able to play around three hours of the turn-based tactical crossover sequel, and despite one somewhat embarrassing oversight in the game's mechanics in one part of one of the planets we visited, we had rather a good time with it, to say the least.
They say a picture paints a thousand words, but a video includes thousands of those pictures, all assembled one after the other to create the illusion of movement, and you get a bunch of words, too. Everyone's a winner!
So, if you're looking for our hands-on impressions of the opening hours, treat those eyes and ears of yours to the video above to find out more about how we got on — and whilst you're at it, why not drop a comment below letting us know how you feel about the game? It'd be just lovely if you would.

Lovely review Alex
I think it looks great, and Ubisoft have made a great sequel!
Ive never been a fan of the genre, and I played the first title to see if perhaps that had changed, but sadly not. However, my usual gripe with the genre is it feeling/playing slow. Interesting that Sparks seems to address that issue somewhat with the free movement.
Ultimately I'll wait for the crazy sale next Christmas. Ubisoft shouldn't drop their prices so easily in my opinion...
Let's not kid ourselves, we know this will turn out well.
Also, are there trees and do they look good? Need to know that one.
Somewhat mixed impressions, although it's good to hear they've somehow managed to make the sequel look even sharper on Switch.
I agree the rabbids talking is pretty weird. The original game's rabbids had to express themselves entirely through body language, which ended up making them more charming. I don't need to hear them talking, especially if it's going to be something stupid like rabbid Rosalina yelling "yeet" when she throws something.
Pre-ordered and waiting impatiently!!
Makes sense that they speak since they created Edge as a new heroine. If Ubisoft games didn’t crater in price (or this was a low printing like the gold edition of FR) I would get this day one but since there will be plenty of copies, no point. Will wait for the price drop.
October will be a hard month for the wallet so many games coming out.
Apparently you’ll need a Ubisoft account to play it?
Dude I don't know if I'll have time for this and P5R 😭.
Can't wait for this one!
I'm definitely still a bit on the fence with this one (as someone who absolutely adored Kingdom Battle) but between solid reviews and those typical Ubisoft sales, I might just bite the bullet on this one because it does look great.
WHY DO THE RABBIDS SPEAK ENGLISH THOUGH OH GOD.
The question I have is: Do the Star Bits make the "bada ding" noise they made when you collected them in Super Mario Galaxy?? This is a dealbreaker for me.
BREAKING NEWS: Alex only has one ear.
Really, really not a fan of the free move mechanic but given how great the first game was I'm sure they'll win me over with this.
@StarPoint I'm not even kidding this better be what it is.
I really like the first game.. but my god these sequels are coming too often and fast to keep up with, they are not the only games we all have to play. I think no matter how "good" this game may be, it won't matter and games like this are good for one per generation to stay fresh and exciting feeling. Still working through the DK DLC for the first one.
I'll most likely pass on this one altogether because it is just not needed now.
I approve of the sharp threads @AlexOlney.
I tried the first game a few weeks ago, but I was bored out of my mind after the first chapter of world two. Probably not getting sparks of hope.
The original Mario+Rabbids was a perfectly competent game, and also one of the only Switch games I own that put down out of boredom and have therefore never finished. I have every intention of letting Sparks of Hope pass me altogether.
This game is getting glowing previews so far. Can't wait.
Even though Ubisoft games drop in price rapidly, I bought Kingdom Battle at full price at launch and felt it was well worth it. It's the only turn based game I've every truly enjoyed the combat and really one of the best games on Switch, which is shocking considering it's not a genre I typically enjoy.
What was the embarrassing oversight?
Sounds like too much Rabbids for my liking. I wasn’t a fan of them in the first one either, but still loved the game despite them being in it
Although my biggest issue with the first game was the exploration/puzzle bits. All I wanted was the option to choose a battle without wandering around looking for one. Basically, I just want the tactical part of the game and zero story. Considering this game now has expanded environments and more dialogue, I’m probably not going to get it. Shame
If Beep-o actually has a voice now then I am guessing he won't be cursing anymore ever again in-game like he did in the first game lol
The first one is one of my fav games on Switch but mostly because of the tiled tactical combat. I didn't find the world exploration quite so good, so I am a bit disappointed to see they've not stuck with the same tiled tactical gameplay in this.
@msvt 4-5 years for a sequel is too fast?
@Ralizah Disagree I think the different voices adds more charm to the characters.
Also you call the preview impressions mixed? My guy practically every single one is glowing. Even this one is mostly positive.
There sounds like good number of downgrades with the annoying voices and unclear actions with free movement. I always like the precision of a grid in turn based games. Going to pick it up at $15 after a few months knowing Ubisoft.
@mazzel
Well... for a game like this, yeah I think maybe it is. I do admit I am slow an finding game time is more difficult to keep up with. I think this one will sell much less than the first one, even if it is a better game overall. Hope you love it if you're interested. I like the first a lot too.
@TuxDC Did you read the review? He praised everything except for the new rabbid voices. Unless that part about the free movement was just injecting your own opinion?
@msvt yeah I also like the first one a lot, even I usually don't like tactic games...
But same here, gaming time is rare these days... and the backlog gets bigger n bigger...
