Re: Rumour: Star Fox Zero Facing Development Niggles, Another Delay Could Happen

Vineleaf

I've wanted to be excited about this game, but I just can't. I don't trust that Nintendo will treat this franchise the way I'd like it to be seen, and I've liked (SNES, Adventures) as many games as I've disliked (Assault, Command).

There is a lot of possibility in the SF universe, but when they basically said it was a third telling of the same story, that's when I knew it wasn't for me. Best of luck to them.

Re: Talking Point: Learning Lessons From the Past Can Define Nintendo's NX Launch

Vineleaf

To be a mass market success, it needs to have broad appeal with a healthy and diverse games library. I won't pick one up immediately as the only time I've been an early adopter on video game hardware was the Gameboy in 1989. The library has to be there to appeal to me - that's why I bought an X1 instead of a PS4. It has the games I want to play now instead of some date in the future.

And, frankly, I'm beyond Mario fatigue. The Zelda games aren't huge for me, I've never played Pokemon, and I hate Smash with a passion. For someone like me, I need the PN03s and SSXs and Auto Modellistas to want a system. I don't think that Nintendo has the arsenal to do that alone anymore. That means they have to get this hardware right for 3rd parties or they'll be singing to the ever-shrinking choir for another generation.

Re: Poll: Which Nintendo Franchises Do You Most Want to See With the NX Launch?

Vineleaf

I was okay with the 3DS launch lineup; I just couldn't get one due to grad school/starting a business. Piltowings Resort, Steeldivers, and Dead or Alive Dimensions had me very interested.

I'd like Pilotwings, some sort of racing game, a Splation with more single player and local co-op, a Fire Emblem anthology, and some 3rd party like a new SSX, a Ratchet and Clank/Sunset Overdrive kind of game, a Warriors title like Samurai Warriors 4 Empires, and both Monster Hunter and Toukiden. I'd start saving up today for that kind of launch.

Edit: forgot Bayonetta 3. And something with the open wonder of Infinite Space.

Re: IHS Technology Adds to Speculation of an NX Portable Release in 2016

Vineleaf

The exact problem is that, while we don't know what it is, analysts and others are attempting to put the puzzle pieces together. Nintendo may indeed be enjoying the buzz, but they need to control the narrative a bit as well. A leak or two that leaves us wanting to know more might be sensible. They don't want hype to outstrip reality.

Re: Rumour: Super Smash Bros. Planned as NX Launch Title, Bandai Namco Working on "Several" Games

Vineleaf

While a lot of the conversation (here included) is on the NX vs the Wii U, I'm really quite interested to see where things go in the portable sense. The 3DS has been fantastic (full disclosure: I love the Vita as well, so I'm biased towards portability), and I would love to see what they can do next in that format. I was a bit bummed that the article @rjejr posted suggested no OLED screen. The Vita version of that looks lovely, even though they dumped it in the updated hardware iteration.

The Wii U could have done better sales-wise, but I got my money's worth out of it. The NX could be interesting, but we don't know enough and I have no reason to buy one. It'll all come down to the games, a decision up to each of us.

Just like it always does.

Re: Talking Point: Online Gaming Can't Recreate the Unique Fun of Local Multiplayer, Yet It's Dominant

Vineleaf

I get sick of games and games companies telling me it's more fun to play online. Forza Horizon 2 keeps wanting me to do it, and EA uses it as a crutch to avoid having to develop more than the barr minimum. I play games to escape, not so I can deal with even more jerks on a daily basis. I've appreciated Nintendo understanding that, but I am worried for the future.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo is Right to Move On From the Wii Family Name With NX

Vineleaf

The name isn't as important as the overall impression the marketplace has of the device. I have no problem understanding what the Xbox One (which I have) and PS4 (which I'll get next year) are, and those who are general media consumers have no problem either. The Wii U, if properly explained, could have been fine on name, but there was not nearly enough work done to explain to the market what exactly the thing was. A lot of that was the uphill battle after the Wii seemed to tail off from public consciousness around 2010. The gap was too big, and that audience would need to be reached again.

Marketing, as a concept, isn't difficult, even if the ideas and reception are much more challenging. It's the concept itself that Nintendo seems to be so conservative with, and I think it bit them a bit this generation.

Re: The Next Nintendo Direct is on 12th November

Vineleaf

Nice that they're doing one, but I can't say there's really anything I'm anticipating. I'm looking forward to next week's Stella Glow (sorry, Europe), FE Fates, Bravely Second, SMTxFE, Project X Zone 2, Final Fantasy Explorers, and a few others. But my dance card is a bit full right now with Rise of the Tomb Raider, Fallout 4, along with Forza 6 and my never-ending run through Hyrule Warriors.

Re: Feature: How Mario Kart Brought Two Soul Mates Together

Vineleaf

Quite happy for you both. I've had two relationships that formed over games, though they were local multiplayer. Got to know a wonderful woman while playing marathon rounds of Wii Bowling, and my current relationship owes a lot to Mario Kart 8. And simultaneously cursing very loudly at the television.

Re: Preview: Hitting the Courts in Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash

Vineleaf

Much like their 3DS counterparts, I think a golf title would have been stronger than tennis. I actually really like the 3DS tennis title, but not as one I bury hours and hours in. It's much harder to sell a Wii U game as being the same kind of pick-up-and-play experience.

Re: Nintendo Shares Suffer Major Drop as Investors React to Miitomo and Its Delay

Vineleaf

I'm glad that they aren't going down the established—and broken—model of mobile games. I like that they're trying something different, a different way to interact. It's what we expect of Nintendo. That said, I can't say I'm terribly excited by this, and I agree that while this will probably be huge in Japan, the lower population density especially here in North America makes it a harder sell. I'll be curious to see what else they come up with down the road.
