This confirms that the next Smash will be some sort of reboot, with fewer more unique characters. This would allow us to have 1 Mario, with new powers from the Wonder and Odyssey games, 1 Link with powers from TOTK. Peach could have powers inspired by Showtime.
And having less, more diverse characters will also make any new character more exciting.

Thanks that's precisely the point I'm trying to make: Hollow Knight fans will always be there if the dev takes a decade. That audience which includes you, me and everyone on this site, is already in the bag. But the broader audience will dissipate if you keep them waiting for too long.
I work in film production, so I might be biased.
It's true that not everything needs to be franchise. But the Hollow Knight universe is so special that it deserves to be more than 1 or 2 games.

To those frustrated by my comment:
This is not coming from a sense of self-entitled fandom. It's a de facto consequence of long intervals between projects: your audience will dwindle the longer you wait.
Dev time and quality is a tricky balance, but it's entirely possible to be unbalanced towards the latter.

As much as I respect the desire of an indie like Team Cherry to remain small to retain creative control, I don't think it's worth it. Once your creation becomes part of popular culture, you kinda have a responsibility to deliver new work every now and then.

The more I think about it, the more I love the idea of the next Smash starting with a fresh slate.
Not carrying over truckloads of Fire Emblem and Pokémon characters, multiple Links and Mario's will open up the possibility of characters like Zagreus to make an appearance. Also Link could appear in all his TOTK glory and Mario could have powers from Odyssey and Wonder. We could get fresh Pokémon from the latest games. Oh the possibilities!

I'm still hoping to be tossed into a room full of live hornets and thorny bushes to the sound of Stickerbush Symphony.

I can't believe there's no mention of F-Zero 99.
It's such a unique multiplayer online gaming experience, with one of the deepest racing game mechanics.

@ottoecamn Of course Ghibli themselves are unlikely to do it, even if it's not unimaginable. What the general audience is saying is that they would like a Zelda film's visuals to have that style and sensibility. There are many other studios who could achieve this with the right direction (e.g. Comix Wave, IG Prod, Sola, etc.)

@ZeldaLord If you go back, you'll see that most people's reaction was actually surprised/curious, not disappointed.

@Olliemar28 As someone working in the film industry, anything can still happen before principal photography (the actual filming), especially since the screenwriter and actor strike put everything on hold.

I'm so glad the reception has been so overwhelmingly negative - in a stark contrast with the Super Mario Bros Movie announcement.
The only hope is that this will make them reconsider making the movie in animation, with either Ghibli, Laika or another animation studio. We're currently living in a animation renaissance, and it would be such a shame to miss out on this.

I'm glad the reaction all over the web is negative. Choosing to make it live action rather than animated is very risky, but doable with the right team (for instance directed by Guillermo del Toro or the The Duffer Brothers). But with the producer of Morbius, the writer of Jurassic World and the director of a forgotten mid 2010s franchise, there's literally no hope this could be any good.

I never realized how crazily successful Animal Crossing has been. It makes me think this will be the next movie Illumination and Nintendo will do next.

It's nice but I wouldn't go as far as comparing it to Ghibli's work.

Fair enough, but it's such a missed opportunity not to have included courses set in South America, Africa or even the Middle East.

As much as I love their ingenuity, it's really unfortunate that Mario Kart's World Tour courses are all limited to Europe, Asia and the US.

I'm surprised you guys at Nintendo Life don't have a direct channel to Nintendo to flag things like that.

Hot take: Nintendo will give Mario Kart some rest to avoid franchise fatigue and will start pushing F-Zero ⚡

Using Zelda as an example is a pretty strong indication that TOTK will be re-released in 4K on the Super Switch, followed by some DLC.

The best theory I've read is that it's a new branch parallel to everything else, created by Zelda going back in time. If she hadn't, Ganondorf couldn't have taken her appearance and the forthcoming timeline wouldn't have been possible.
This also allows Nintendo to treat the BOTW/TOTK Hyrule as a brand new slate.
