Re: Cassette Beasts Mixes Lovely Pixel Art And Creature Catching On Switch In May

SpoonySpoons

Gonna try this on gamepass. Seems like the devs have some idea of what the genre has been lacking.

Edit: Played for a bit. The game does borrow quite a bit from Pokemon, almost too much at first. In spite of that, it definitely improves in areas where the franchise should’ve moved forward somewhere between gen 5 and 6. The way the player interacts with the world and the monsters kind of reminds me of Moon.

Re: Hands On: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Indulges Your Idiocy In The Very Best Way

-Puzzles being integrated into the overworld is nice. I like shrines a lot, but this is a very good upgrade.

-It seems like a lot of the time spent on this game must have been manually inputting different parameters and stats for each individual item you can interact with.

-Building vehicles sounds fun, I wonder if its just a fun little thing to do for those who want to traverse faster, or if there’s a necessity to it.

Overall I think I’m sold. Game seems like a great time waster.

Re: Studio Trigger Reveals Stunning Opening Cinematic For New Switch Free-To-Play Omega Strikers

@Serpenterror I don’t think this doomer mentality with gaming is really justified. Theres clearly still a huge market for traditional pay-to-own(in which you don’t really “own” anymore) games, as evidenced by….well just look at the headlines for the last week and count the ratio between live service and traditional out of box games. The irony behind this rant is that the more traditional development is arguably in a worse spot.

Its been a running gag since the early 2010s that most games just don’t release finished. Day 1 patches, dlc, expansions, servers getting shut down, bugs, content updates, etc. At least with a f2p title, once it flops its over. Sure, anyone who spent the time or cash isn’t getting that back, but so are the people who bought Pokemon S/V and still haven’t gotten the game properly fixed yet.

Re: Poll: What Do You Think Of The New Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Font?

SpoonySpoons

On one hand, I just really don’t care in this particular case. Both fonts are fine. Not great, but on smaller screens like the switch or on phone they work pretty well. These are some pretty quick and dirty ports too, so I don’t really expect much.

On the other hand, this does open up a good discussion on the importance of UI in games. If I’m staring at menus for hours at a time, making it look pretty is very important. Persona 5 is a good example of this, offering a UI with some snazzy visuals and a control scheme that makes fights move a bit quicker.

Re: Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak Updated To Version 15.0.0, Here's What's Included

SpoonySpoons

Surge slash and Kinsect buffs are always welcome.

The increase in points all the way to 220 is all well and good, but its really just a band-aid. Grinding investigation levels isn’t very fun, and having equipment gated behind an arbitrary level just doesn’t do it for me. It’s a shame because the anomaly fights themselves are a lot of fun. Optimizing dps while also needing to be aware of a more aggressive monster and his potential AoE has been a great way of forcing Rise mechanics to their limits.

Re: Pokémon GO Dev Niantic Is Making A Monster Hunter Mobile Game

SpoonySpoons

@CazSonOfCaz I’m assuming they mean the monetization issues from Pokemon GO. Essentially they increased prices on the remote raids introduced during the pandemic under the pretext that “we need people playing this outside”. From what I understand, this hurts a pretty significant portion of players who live in more remote areas with an already dwindling playerbase.

Re: Poll: Which Is The Best Ganondorf?

SpoonySpoons

@Ryu_Niiyama Did he want better for his people? Considering its the same Ganondorf from OoT, I was always under the impression that his characterization in WW was to show that the circumstances he was born into lead to him abandoning his humanity for ambition. If anything he uses his fellow Gerudo as an means to an end.

Re: Square Enix Adds 'SaGa' Series Music Update To Theatrhythm Final Bar Line

SpoonySpoons

@FishyS Yeah I bought the highest tier, and while I don’t necessarily regret it, I don’t play a lot of the DX upgrade songs as much as I should. I think the only ones I consistently go back to are “Band: A Long Fall” and some of the modular tracks.

If I were to make any recommendations for potential buyers, I would just buy the base game, and pick and choose which series packs you want.

Re: Square Enix Adds 'SaGa' Series Music Update To Theatrhythm Final Bar Line

SpoonySpoons

Was pleasantly surprised by this drop. The last couple were pretty disappointing, with both song choices(Emil’s shop….really?) and very little Supremes.

Not only do all but one song in this pack have a supreme, but the songs themselves stand on their own pretty well. I haven’t played a lot of the games listed, but this pack has me looking forward to tackling them at some point. Here’s hoping SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered comes out soon.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (April 8th)

SpoonySpoons

@BodkinDQ Yeah, Engage is really awesome. I was already working through the FE games before(made it to Echoes) but this just makes me want to play more of them. There’s a lot that it does well, but I think what I enjoy most about it is how it commits to forcing a player to adapt and experiment throughout the story. One of my favorite tropes in RPGs is when you’re given a fixed cast, or need to work around a dungeon mechanic that makes you rethink how you progress. Final Fantasy 4’s rotating cast and dungeons are a good example of this, and a huge reason why that game is so replayable to me. Engage not only manages to do this, it also somehow allows more than enough room to offer multiple “solutions” without feeling too open ended like its predecessor, Three Houses. Overall, it’s a fantastic game that I can’t wait to come back to after playing more from the series.

As far as FF10 goes, I’m pretty excited to get back to it. Haven’t played since the HD remaster first came out on PS3, so it’s been quite some time. Much like 9, I wonder what I’ll be able to take from the story now that I’m older.

Re: Dragon Quest XII: The Flames Of Fate Logo Gets A Minor Update

SpoonySpoons

Always hilarious seeing people getting their panties in a bunch over non-info and rumors every time this title gets brought up. Though 11 was outstanding and the quality of the games in the last decade has ranged from good to great, I can’t help but feel like this series has flanderized itself. A good shake-up and a creative spin on existing systems that won’t sacrifice tradition in the process will be healthy for it.

Re: Feature: Call Of Duty On Nintendo Systems - A Brief History

SpoonySpoons

@Dpullam I think the formula has just stagnated for a variety of reasons. Online play is a way of life now, and isn’t the boom it used to be. Battle Royales made some pretty big waves, but it seems like those have settled down in the last couple of years. There’s no real reason to innovate or even polish because sales are guaranteed profits from folks who just want something to shoot on their nights off.

Re: Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Series Launches On Switch Later This Month

SpoonySpoons

@RPGreg2600 Haha same experience here. Beat 8 a few weeks ago, and man was that a rough time. So many poor choices were made at every angle of the games design, often in attempt to break the mold or whatever. The straw that broke the camels back for me was the soft lock you could do in the final dungeon because you didn’t happen to recover the correct command for the abilities you had at the time. I turned on the cheats and just went to town after that. Such a terrible game.

9 has a few issues but replaying that again was an absolute joy. Easily at the top of Squares PS1 catalogue for me.

Re: Every Dragon Quest Game Ranked

SpoonySpoons

@TheWingedAvenger Agreed that 5 is overrated. Very cool game, but it suffers from a lack of direction in the final act that makes the whole thing feel rather anticlimactic. If we were ranking the series by individual points in the story, I’d say the small portion of the game where it’s just the Hero and his monsters is peak Dragon Quest however.

Re: Every Dragon Quest Game Ranked

SpoonySpoons

@Vash0125 Agreed, the PS1 version is near unplayable by todays standards. The 3DS version fixed a lot of the pacing issues, but by design the game is just such a slow burn that its hard to go back to.

Re: Every Dragon Quest Game Ranked

SpoonySpoons

Always sad to see 6 ranked so low. Personally I’d put it above 5 and 9, and well above 7, but oh well. You really can’t go wrong with any of these titles, even with the weaker entries.
