Re: Review: Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection - Divine Dungeon Crawling But Not Definitive

SpoonySpoons

@Nanami_Ataraxia For what its worth, there is a story in each. Speaking strictly for the original, there’s not a ton of dialogue but there is a lot of environmental storytelling and encounters that help world build. This eventually plays into some rather big twists later on, usually involving certain characters and the nature of the labyrinth itself. I won’t oversell it as amazing, but the more you play you’ll find the more curious you get.

Re: Live A Live Producer Open To A Sequel

@Hasangeist Localization at the time wasn’t as cut and dry as it is these days, especially for JRPGs. I wouldn’t really say they “dug themselves into a hole” so much as they were already in a hole to be dug out of.

Re: Soapbox: Modern Zelda Dungeons Are, In Fact, Divine

SpoonySpoons

The open ended aspects of the more modern dungeons just don’t do it as much for me. The TotK temples are…fine. Definitely better than the Divine beasts. I just think the open ended approach to solving the “puzzle box” isn’t as enticing as a more linear haunt that offers each room as a new puzzle. Unlocking a map and compass, searching for keys, and figuring out how to delve deeper is far more interesting than getting told “theres four doodads, find a way to touch them”. Its a rather sour note in a couple of games that excel in environmental puzzles and design.

Re: Review: Cassette Beasts - An Inventive Monster Battler That's Far More Zelda Than Pokémon

SpoonySpoons

Its a good game that could be better. In a lot of ways it felt like Pokemon Ranger with turn based systems that borrow from Digimon and Chrono Cross. My issue was that actually transitioning between the RPG side and Adventure side left a lot to be desired. It felt clunky, especially in a time where Persona 5 laid the road map on how to make exploration and combat feel seamless in a turn based game 6+ years ago. Ultimately its worth the pick-up though.

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom?

SpoonySpoons

Solid 9/10 overall. I would say it takes many many great steps forward from it’s predecessor, but also takes a few steps back. I do enjoy how much more alive the world is, and how revitalized the citizens of Hyrule are. It feels like the world is one big mystery, and the citizens are unraveling it with me. Changes to the camera angles, enemy variety and behavior, and quest design are also huge pluses to me. There’s been a lot of times where I feel like I’m a part of some grand story that BotW didn’t quite do for me.

If I were to mention things I don’t enjoy, I would say the biggest issue I have is how unpolished some puzzles seem to be. For example, a lot of the shrines will follow a repetitive 3-step format, often utilizing the same building block from the previous room. Other times its rarely as cut and dry what exactly the game wants you to build and do, which can get a little frustrating when it wants to encourage creativity. Also not completely sure how I feel about the depths yet. Its cool in concept, but a lot of times it feels like one big blob of the same environment over and over. I haven’t explored a ton of it though, so I’m looking forward to seeing if I’m wrong about that.

Overall, outstanding game. Every day I’ve been looking forward to getting off work and playing.

Tears of the Kingdom! I’ve been having fun making contraptions and getting frustrated with minor changes I’ll be used to in a week.

On a side note, am I crazy or is mainland Hyrule more condensed? It feels like they stuffed it full of new things, and then cut down a sizeable portion of the landmass.

Re: Marvel's Midnight Suns On Switch "No Longer Planned"

@Friendly Nah, at this point emulation isn’t really doing anything to them. Its been an issue since year 1, but there’s been zero data to indicate sales and revenue are slowing down because of it. Obviously it’d be a bad idea for them not to play hardball with it, but thats hardly a reason for a hardware upgrade.

Re: Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Series Sells Two Million Copies

SpoonySpoons

@awaltzforvenus I feel like I’m in the minority for not wanting CT in HD-2D. The graphical style is good, but I don’t think it works for what made Chrono Trigger stand out in the first place.

For an example of what I mean, seamless transitions between battle and exploration wouldn’t work as well with the kind of separation you see between the Sprites and overworld in HD-2D titles. Both the camera view, the rendering of objects such as trees or flowing water, and the relative stiffness of HD-2D sprites all play into this.

There’s other factors as well, such as bloom not playing well with the color pallet and Toriyamas art style, and various graphical oddities being tuned for said color pallet(portals, spell animations, etc.)

I would like to see a remake in some form, but HD-2D isn’t the way to go.

@Cashews I agree that announcing a new console in the winter is a terrible idea, but it is kind if funny thinking that Nintendo is actively in a race against Sony and Microsoft still. New hardware from Nintendo isn’t really effecting either of them considering the niche Nintendo has carved for itself.

It’s honestly hard to say what Nintendos plan is with a potential hardware upgrade. Eventually they will need to upgrade to keep third party developers in the nest, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they milked the current model for another couple years to capitalize on the insane install base.

Re: Watch Out, Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Leaks Are Out In The Wild

SpoonySpoons

Lots of ill will towards leakers everywhere.

I personally don’t mind them as long as they’re not going out of their way to spoil it for everyone. Sure, what they’re doing is illegal, but whatever. With how much cash Nintendo has no doubt already made on the game by preorders alone, this is a rather victimless crime.

Re: Soapbox: It's Time For A Zelda 1 Remake, Please

SpoonySpoons

I wouldn’t mind a remake of the original, or at least a reimagining using the same map. It worked extremely well for a Link Between Worlds. My issue with the original Zelda is that it’s just not very fun or intuitive to play anymore. It’s stiff, the color pallet on the overworld is ugly, and most of the dungeons are just enemy gauntlets with very little puzzle solving. A Link to the Past, much like other SNES sequels, blew the formula wide open and has been improved on since. I appreciate Zelda 1 for what it is, but I don’t think I’d pick it up again.

Wrapped up Final Fantasy 10, and have since moved on to FF10-2. It’s uh….certainly something so far. On one hand, I think the open-ended aspect of it is nice. Being able to explore around Spira and check in on the local going-ons is a great way to world build. There’s a surprising amount of thought put into it considering how much the original only told what was absolutely necessary for the plot.

Now on the other hand…I just don’t think I like anything else. The main cast doesn’t really have any chemistry so far. The supporting cast on the ship is annoying. The OST is terrible(that pop song at the beginning was good though). The battle system feels frantic, but somehow lacks any real stakes. I’m also not a fan of enemy types carrying over into different areas. FF8 did the same thing, and it just feels lazy. I’m gonna try to push through, but I might just drop it in a few days if it doesn’t get any better.

Re: Octopath Traveler II Director Talks About The Future Of The Series

SpoonySpoons

@JaapV Final Fantasy X is a lot more linear, but is really endearing. The Turn Based combat in that is more grounded, but its an early case of someone experimenting with what you can do with the system. Not to mention the really endearing story. The other FF games are recommended as well, especially 3-5.

Bravely Default games are from the same team. I don’t like them personally, but the gameplay is similar to Octopath.

Dragon Quest XI is a certified hood classic. It’s the stereotypical turn based game in every way, but does everything right. My favorite JRPG on switch, and JRPG franchise in general.

These are my recommendations if you’re starting out, but if you wanna branch out and experiment with your tastes more, there’s plenty to choose from.

Turn Based Strategy games are a guilty pleasure of mine. Tactics Ogre Reborn is my favorite, but you can’t go wrong with any of the Fire Emblems either. Disgaea 4 and 5 are fun if you want something over the top.

The SaGa series is rather advanced and out there, but worth trying if you can get them on sale. I recommend Romancing SaGa 2, or SaGa Frontier. I enjoy this series a lot, but it’s not for everyone.

Hope this helps!
