Re: Video: See the Big Difference Between Monster Hunter XX on Switch and 3DS

@Biff_ARMStrong while it might not be the solution you are looking for, you could put all your palicos in the reserve list and just play without them.

That aside, I tried the demo and it was quite fun. Did not really notice the upgrade in graphics once you are actually playing, but it did have better immersion and felt great on a bigger handheld, and the second analog stick is really fun to have. I did keep pressing ZL instead of L though, so I kept unlocking my camera. XD

Re: Video: Here's How You Download and Play the Japanese Monster Hunter XX Demo on Switch

SomeWriter13

@Broosh fortunately(?) World looks like a slightly-gameplay-simplified, much-higher-graphics Monster Hunter. So assuming XX comes to the West, you will have two games with different nuances to them. For the more classical MH, go for XX. For something a little different, MHW.
It's the best of both (puts shades on) worlds.

EDIT: of course that's assuming Capcom actually gives us what we want, which is probably like asking Deviljho not to eat your poogie.

Re: Editorial: Satoru Iwata's Vision for Gaming Continues to Shine Through Nintendo

The NES and SNES were the consoles that brought me closer to my brother when we were kids. I can still remember when our dad brought the SNES home. Really cool that Nintendo decided to use a similar box for the SNES Mini.

The Wii was the console that brought my entire family closer because we could play bowling with our parents. They loved that machine.

Career workload meant we didn't have time to play much during the WiiU era, so I didn't get that particular console. We did get the 3DS, and it was a perfect fit for our lifestyle. Pokemon XY and Monster Hunter really brought me, my brother, and my best friend closer together in our adult years.

And now the Switch. What a fantastic machine. It allows me to play not only with family, but also my 5-year old nephew, even some of my students.

I agree with the article author and everyone on this thread: Nintendo has a magical way of bringing families and friends together, and a big part of that is because of Iwata's vision.

Re: First Impressions: Kicking Off With FIFA 18 on the Nintendo Switch

SomeWriter13

@MaSSiVeRiCaN portability is key. I don't play FIFA so I won't buy this on either my Switch or my PS4. But if we're talking about Monster Hunter, I'll go portable over the better graphics of Monster Hunter World 10 times out of 10. Graphics isn't everything, and when you have "OK enough" graphics on the Switch, then all the better.

Re: Zelda: Breath Of The Wild's Tough Trail Of The Sword DLC Has Been Beaten Already

SomeWriter13

@SupremeAllah true! I've gotten to the point where Lynels don't pose much of a threat anymore. They still whack me from time to time since I haven't gotten the timing down just yet, but they don't intimidate me at all now.

I'm trying to upgrade the Barbarian armor now after maxing out my Ancient armor, so I'm forced to fight Lynels.

@SANICBOOM644 I suppose with all that durability it won't matter much whether it heals or not, but it still bugs me that it won't regenerate. The Master Trial essentially just "hacked" the Master Sword's data instead of adding to its functions.

Re: Nintendo's Market Capitalisation Overtakes Sony's Following Switch Success

@DESS-M-8 you have a point regarding the PS4 lack of innovation outside graphics.

I think the graphics arms race between MS and Sony is one of the reasons why analysts are bullish on Nintendo's future. There's only so much horsepower you can put into a machine without it becoming too expensive. If the XBOX One X is any indicator, we're likely to see $799 machines in the near future. (Like how the powerhouse Samsung Galaxy Note 8 phone is rumored to cost almost $1,000). That's not a good long term plan.

After 4K is likely 8K, which is likely the maximum resolution the human eye can distinguish. What's next after that? More horsepower to the console? At what cost?

The tough part about all this for Sony is that they have put their buyers into that "moar power is innovation" mindset, and all it does is drive up the cost of production. Third party developers are faced with the same issue, which is why many are doing retro bit graphics to stem the tide.

Don't get me wrong, graphics still impress me. But the graphics of NieR: Automata doesn't wow me as much as Breath of the Wild has, even if the former is on a powerhouse console. I think it's all down to more organic design, in my humble opinion.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Gives Its Assessment of the New Nintendo 2DS XL

SomeWriter13

@H1B1Esquire I chuckled at the irony of the name "New Retro" 3DS XLI

Heck, the New Nintendo 3DS XL is now the Old New Nintendo 3DS XL. If the new New Retro 3DS XLI comes out, then this new New Nintendo 2DS XL, will eventually be the old New Nintendo 2DS XL. And you'll eventually see people on ebay selling unopened old New Nintendo 2DS XL still in its old original box. Or if Nintendo re-releases it, then you'll see scalpers selling new New Nintendo 2DS XL.

...which will eventually become old New Nintendo 2DS XL.

...OK I've definitely consumed too much coffee. XD

Re: Nintendo's Market Capitalisation Overtakes Sony's Following Switch Success

@Switch81tch I agree with you! Sony's products (Playstation aside) have been pretty unremarkable in the last few years. When I bought a TV for the Playstation, I only looked at LG and Samsung; Sony didn't even come into play at all. And I'm not sure how they can scale up their development, given that they are hemorrhaging money outside their games division.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think of Nintendo at E3 2017?

SomeWriter13

@Caryslan yeah no Monster Hunter is a big downer for me. I was at least expecting MHXX, but that game is now in limbo for the Switch (and 3DS). Still hoping that Capcom either changes their minds and releases it on a Nintendo console, or announce that they plan to all along and it was all just poorly handled PR.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think of Nintendo at E3 2017?

SomeWriter13

Was praying for Pokemon and MonHun for the Switch.

I got a soft Yes on the former, and a soft No on the latter.

So the event was a bit of a disappointment for me. But the things that Nintendo and its partners did reveal were all very nice. I'm hoping things continue to pick up!

Re: Capcom Not Confirming Plans for Monster Hunter XX on Switch in the West 'At This Time'

SomeWriter13

@audiobrainiac you speak with the eloquence of a poet. I applaud you for summing up this whole issue in such a small space.

I bought the Switch mainly in anticipation of two things: MonHun and Pokemon. The writing was on the wall, and the MHXXSwitch just confirmed it.

...and now this?

Even if Capcom does eventually deliver MHXX to the Western market, the way they're bungling up this whole thing will leave a lasting impression.

Re: Capcom Has No Plans to Bring Monster Hunter XX for Nintendo Switch to the West

SomeWriter13

Lots of people saying there's plenty of salt on this thread, but there is good reason for the salt.

Personally I'm not going to pile on Capcom. I will say that I am quite hurt and wounded by their recent actions, though. MH:World going to all consoles EXCEPT Switch is fine. That's their choice. But to take away MHXX Switch from us? Come on...that just sounds spiteful.

What makes it especially painful is how WiiU and 3DS users helped make Monster Hunter a thing in the West. It wasn't that popular where I'm from, until MH4U on the 3DS. I hunted with my own students from time to time. Heck, I even taught a few people about it. When people ask about this odd game called "Monster Hunter" I eagerly took the time to teach them.

I feel so attached to this series because it is primarily skill based, and that skill transfers to each new game.

I even bought a Switch in anticipation of a new Monster Hunter title! (Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart are fantastic consolation prizes, though! Really really beautiful games.)

So when they announced World, I felt a sharp pain in my heart. But I let it go. We're getting MHXX anyway.

And now this. Capcom specifically saying they "have no plans to localize it to the West." That's pretty strongly and succinctly worded. No extra explanation, no consoling of disappointed fans, just a cold corporate statement.

That really, really, really hurts me. And this is just a game! That's how powerful Monster Hunter is.

I'm really sad this is how things are turning out. Not hoping for anything now.
