I heartily recommend this game. I've poured in almost 50 hours into it, alternating between building my house (3 floors with a basement now!) Farming, and adventuring, sometimes with friends. It's loads of fun and provides a nice creative outlet. Pretty cool to invite friends into your home.

@Agramonte I gotta agree with you. While massive games are great, the high concept smaller games are the most fun for me. We're getting crazy mileage from Bomberman. Five player chaos is an intense experience. (We have controllers for 8 players, but not enough people haha.)

@Steadmatt1551 is that the split screen co-op or local play? I'm hoping it isn't the latter as I've been playing a lot of local co-op. Fortunately no island resets so far, and my three story house is intact.

The Switch truly is a magnificent achievement in concept and execution. In one of my college classes I was teaching Metaphor in advertising and I discussed the Switch's take on both a tablet (easy to understand) a portable (like the Gameboy and 3DS) and the dock and controllers as console. Then I pulled my Switch out of the bag and the oohs and aaahs erupted. The students knew what it was and the ways to use it because it evokes gaming concepts so well. The Switch's ability to inspire imagination is truly commendable.

Re: Random: Pokémon Fans Are Losing Their Minds Over Pikachu Talking

@AlexSora89 it's not "breaking the character" of Pikachu, that's different from Pikachu "breaking character" or "acting out of character" (even if the message is in character)
If someone doesn't talk for 10 or so odd years (much less in one movie) as they usually act by miming...and then suddenly speaks, that is the very definition of breaking character. It isn't something that Pikachu has been defined to do, nor was it Pikachu's usual method of doing things.

Re: Random: Pokémon Fans Are Losing Their Minds Over Pikachu Talking

@AlexSora89 I sure hope so!

Pikachu talking in just that one scene could have been done another way without resorting to him talking, though.

Maybe Pikachu could have mimed by looking at a Pokeball and touching Ash instead, then Ash has an epiphany, recalls similar moments where Pikachu touches Ash over the Pokeball, cuddling in a sleeping bag together, resting on his shoulder, etc. And Ash himself could have said those lines, and Pikachu could have confirmed the statement by nuzzling him or something. That maybe could have been equally cute and touching...without breaking character.

Re: Random: Pokémon Fans Are Losing Their Minds Over Pikachu Talking

Personally I believe it is a failure in writing, like they couldn't figure out a way for Pikachu to properly mime the message and feeling, so they had to resort to speech as a crutch.

Maybe we were overreacting, but everyone at work was pretty upset when we found out about Pikachu talking. I guess we think this sets a bad precedence.

The art and animation look very similar to early 2000's Flash-animation. If the cooking aspect was very robust, I'd consider this. Based on the trailer, both the cooking and side-scroller aspects look half-baked (no pun intended.)

Unless reviews are very strong, I'm good with the excellent Overcooked. Really fun to play at the office. XD

Re: Monster Hunter XX On Switch Helps Capcom Post Impressive Growth

SomeWriter13

The rest of the interview on another site mentions Capcom saying that this game has helped the PS4:

Also worth noting, Capcom noted that Switch helped revitalize the home video games market in Japan:

“During the six months ended September 30, 2017, our industry saw broad signs of recovery, including greater penetration of the PlayStation 4 home video game console and the strong performance of the new Nintendo Switch game console. This revitalized the home video games market, which had appeared stagnant relative to the growth of mobile games primarily for smartphones.”

...So Capcom essentially is saying "Thanks for supporting us on the 3DS and Switch! Now we can focus on the PS4. NO CURRENT PLANS TO RELEASE MHGG ON SWITCH. KTHNXBYE."

This is the main game I wanted to play on the Switch and CAPCOM pulled the rug from underneath it. Whyyyyyyyyy.

It's weird that the spritework is gorgeous, but the character portraits were done with colored felt tip pens and possibly mixed with water color. (You can see the pen strokes on the solid colors) I guess some people like that, but to me the portraits could have been polished further.

Re: Anniversary: It's One Year Since Nintendo Showed Us The Switch

@Saego thanks for the words of encouragement. ^_^ MHW looks amazing, but I can't play local co-op with friends the same way we could with the 3DS and (I hoped) the Switch. There's only one PS4 in our household, too, and that was my gift to my kid brother, who will likely also play MHW.

Honestly I'll be fine with Monster Hunter Generations (Ultimate?) Unfortunately Capcom has decided not to give us either game (at least not for the foreseeable future.)

Re: Anniversary: It's One Year Since Nintendo Showed Us The Switch

I still remember the sense of wonder when I saw the Switch reveal, and I see that same feeling whenever I show my college students the console. The whole concept just clicks and the whole message is obvious with just one look at the Switch.

The big difference between then and now is my frustration at Capcom's decision to shortchange Switch users by withholding western Monster Hunter Generations (Ultimate?) from us. Back in March I was full of hope and excitement for HD local multiplayer MonHun with my friends. Now I'm sad and bitter. and MHW won't cure that.

The art looks a bit rough. I'm sure there are people who will like the pentel pen art style, but sadly it's not for me.

Also I agree with @Alikan 's sentiment. I wish we had more non-randomized game maps and events. Multiple storylines may be more time consuming to program, but it certainly feels more coherent than random events that might form some semblance of a plot depending on your luck.
