The Monster Hunter XX demo is out in Japan, and while we bemoan the lack of localisation we can, of course, all give it a whirl. All you need to do is setup a Japanese Nintendo Account - which is pretty easy, here's our guide - and then hop onto the eShop to download the demo.
It could certainly be something fun to do as the weekend approaches, and our chums at Arekkz Gaming have produced a handy guide video to take you through the steps. You can see where to find the download in the eShop, and also the sure-fire ways to navigate the menus to get the gameplay you want within the demo itself.
Are you going to give this a try?

We should not have to work so hard for this.
I've also heard that another method is to change your region.
Go into your account settings on My Nintendo
change the region you are currently in to the one you want to purchase from.
Then go to the e-shop again. You'll have to retype your password but that's simple enough. Then you can always change your region back. No need to make a second account. You may have to use up your funds before using this method though.
@Kalmaro It's simple to set up. I have 3 accounts, UK for playing, US for purchasing and a Japanese one for having a nose at what's coming soon and demo's like this that aren't available in the west
For a few minutes work it's worth it.
"Chum", singular. Arekkz is just one dude.
@OorWullie Yeah but I prefer this method, no need to bounce between accounts, plus, you can't transfer funds between accounts I think. Though, I believe you have to use up your funds before using this method.
Capcom, ffs, localize this for the west gosh dang it! (or Nintendo, step up and do it!) I don't want to play in Japanese or not be able to transfer my save from Gen!!
The risk between changing your Account region is you have to use all your funds before you can change it back. So if you buy a $15 US card and buy a game for $14.99 you're stuck on that region until you spend the remaining cent. Having multiple accounts is far easier. Also a minor points this allows flexibility if you finish up with more than one Switch (as I strongly suspect will happen in my house).
Way ahead of you. lol
I was on this way earlier today the minute it went live! Pure bliss!
And don't trouble yourself changing accounts and all that jazz. Just set up a separate Nintendo Account with Japan as region, add a user on Switch and link to the account. That easy. Permanent access to JP eShop not just for this, but all future demos and game imports.
When you launch eShop, it shows both user profiles and you just hit A for your normal one, or move the cursor right to your second account and press A. So easy. And can play the game from all accounts on the system.
@Niinbendo
Um... this is what region free looks like. On Vita, you had to physically reset the entire system every time... ya.
This is a walk in the park.
It is easy to setup yes, but...
When I go to my news feed, it’s full of Japanese articles that are a little irrelevant. Information overload really.
Anyway if disabling this?
@Niinbendo You have to do the same thing on other region free systems as well. You can't just dump currency in one wallet so that is part of the reason they keep them separate plus things like taxes and the like (not going to lie I set my US one to Delaware because no tax) means they can't just toss this in one bucket. Most region free digital storefronts work like this.
Edit: Autocorrect is like a walk of shame sometimes.
@electrolite77 not really a risk. I mean, you know what you're getting into before you do it. They actually won't let you swap regions until you spend the money I believe.
@Littleeddie
No, but, it's really not much at all once you catch up with the news to date. Takes about 10 minutes to go into the feed and get rid of the blue dot on all the new videos (it will never put more than 10 new videos or so at a time, so you go in and get rid of the dots and back out, go back in, get rid of the dots, back out, etc, until you're all caught up. And after that it's just a video every once in a while. Now that there are subscriptions as long as you're not subscribing to a bunch of stuff you shouldn't really get much news. In fact, I kind of appreciate the few JP videos I do get because it's almost always stuff I'm interested in and gameplay videos that aren't released in the US news feed...
See you all later. 👋🏻 I'm off to play me some Monster Hunter.
I'm more than likely to give this a go. Time to test my new kana knowledge...
I already had a Japanese account for my 3DS, so with that and my EU account, I just had to create myself a US one as well. Now I have access to all three regions easily.
Tried the demo. A bit disappointing that it only runs at 30FPS, as this looks like it could easily hit 60, but apart from that it seems like a great port and it works like a charm on the Switch.
Now how about that localization, Capcom?
I had lots of fun with the demo and it looks great on the switch. However I can't see myself trying to play the whole thing in Japanese. I know Monster Hunter isn't a text heavy game but it still takes me out of when I see the characters. Also I don't know if it's because I'm using an android but the Google translate app doesn't really work well. It kept translating words and phrases to something even more confusing than the japanese.
Please let me like this game...please.....
Handheld mode looks good and docked does have some sore spots, overall it's good and I'm importing it for sure.
Having a blast with it so far. The silly heart in me hopes Capcom is tracking downloads by IP address or something similar to see demand for this demo worldwide, but we all know it's unlikely MH:XX is going to see a western release.
(Sigh) Import it is then...
@RocketRonald just hope for an English translation lol (looks like they have press the A button phrase)
Even if this got localized after World comes out, I would still consider it for the portability. And fighting the new jet plane dragon is intense.
@Arcamenel I'm using the app on Android too. Are you sure the app is set to translate Japanese to English instead of English to Japanese? Cause that was my issue.
Also keep in mind that some words are called different things even when directly translated to English. For example the Mega Potion is called the Great Potion in the JP versions of the game.
Im a Monster hunter fan but I will wait for localisation version.
The other benefit to the multiple user accounts is you can take advantage of sales or funds left over in your wallet. It takes me longer to spend my JPN eshop funds so I usually will snag a game that is on sale in that region than my native one and I can still play in either English or Japanese. Got Strikers 1945 for 500 yen as opposed to the full asking price going in the NA shop.
Can you delete the profile and keep the demo? Not sure I want both English and Japanese versions of news clogging up the feed.
Very pretty Graphics. Best looking Monster Hunter game I've ever seen. All this secrecy surrounding a port is just down right annoying.
I have someone on my friend list who's playing the game. I'm sure he enjoys it.
@Broosh fortunately(?) World looks like a slightly-gameplay-simplified, much-higher-graphics Monster Hunter. So assuming XX comes to the West, you will have two games with different nuances to them. For the more classical MH, go for XX. For something a little different, MHW.
It's the best of both (puts shades on) worlds.
EDIT: of course that's assuming Capcom actually gives us what we want, which is probably like asking Deviljho not to eat your poogie.
Capcom are gonna localise it but they're not gonna talk about that until after Monster Hunter World is out, to avoid confusion and focus hype
@SomeWriter13 yeah for sure. As for simplified in World, maybe combo wise for each weapon? I doubt hunter arts will reappear but environment interaction is obviously a huge influence, not to mention the crazy arm grapple thing. Ugh you're right. I just want them both!
And let's not forget the black sheep MH Stories! Still pumped for that too xD
@Windy Couldn't agree more. Just announce it already for the west and watch it sell. It's this type of game that would temped me to get another Switch so my son and I could play together.
Is there any way to hide the japanese news? I made the other account but I don't want my news feed filled with things I can't read.
@super08mario I'm in the same boat - anyone?
anyone know if its possible to 'Switch'..........the L and R functions for the camera and run actions to ZL,ZR? Its just not comfortable using those L R buttons on the joycons for this game and find myself getting hit more often because of it
@Unklemac @super08mario Was searching for the same thing XD Best i found was this on reddit. https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/5yok3d/how_to_remove_japanese_news_from_your_switch_feed/
Thanks @Eric258 - Damn that's one crushing solution! Guess I will live with it for now.
Gotta say, I hate having japanese news in my feed. Actually nuked the settings to be rid of it.
Generally, we shouldn't have all of the users meshed together anyways. You should turn it on, pick a user and then get that user's news, their eshop, their games, etc. This stupid system only makes things more difficult for the user in the end.
That's what's weird about the Switch. It's one of the coolest systems I've ever owned, but struggles with basic stuff like a browser, bluetooth headphones and a user system. It's like having a perfect golden retriever who poops gold and breathes minty fresh air, but also can't climb stairs, play fetch or eat dry food. Like, why?
