Re: Domains For Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu And Pokémon Let's Go Eevee Appeared!

SomeWriter13

@bratzdoll glad we see eye to eye! Though honestly with the way the Switch is doing, 20M isn't too hard even without Pokemon this year. I'm willing to bet Monster Hunter alone is going to move 3M copies at least, and probably convince more people to buy Switch consoles. (Nowhere near MHW yet because of the current install-base, but the franchise has rabid fans, myself included.)

Then again, a new Pokemon will make 20M a certainty.

@bratzdoll I'd be willing to wait until holiday 2019 or even 2020 if it meant a more fleshed out traditional Pokémon game. The 3rd and 4th quarters of 2018 are already shaping up quite nicely that I probably won't have time to play Pokémon this year, anyway. I really don't want Pokémon Go as a requirement to play the Switch game, either.

Edit: I meant to "maximize" the Switch game, just to clarify.

"There's a narrow line between a deliberately retro aesthetic and just plain amateurish execution"

This is my main gripe with this game. Would have been truly amazing if it was rendered in a cel-shaded way that was similar to Archer (easier to animate) or even Cuphead (I know, very lofty dreams...)

I'm glad people are enjoying the 80's references, though! Since I'm part of that generation, I can totally relate. (I remember the end of Deadpool 1. I was the only person laughing at the cinema. Nobody else seemed to get the Ferris Bueller reference...young kids these days...)

Re: Gamevice Wants The US To Block Nintendo Switch Imports Because It Infringes On Its Patents

SomeWriter13

@ThanosReXXX I agree with you that this case has a very poor chance of going Gamevice's way.

From my basic understanding of copyright and patents, for them to even have a case, they'd have to prove at least two of these three things:

1. That there was copying of intellectual property involved.

2. That the Joycons are derivatives of their work.

3. That there would have been no other way for Nintendo to have created the Joycons other than from copying their work.

Point One is very difficult to prove, so that's on the lawyers' skills. It's very unlikely Gamevice can prove that. Point Two is the linchpin of the case, but is very dependent on proving either points 1 or 3. I very much doubt Gamevice can prove Point Three, considering that it is easy to argue the design dissimilarities, and Nintendo's rich(er) history regarding controller design that they can easily fall back on. (In fact, didn't they say at launch that the Joy Cons were a culmination of the designs of all prior Nintendo consoles?) Failing that, Nintendo can argue that they merely built upon the concept (not copyright-able/patent-able) and not the work (point of copyright and patent contention).

This can go in a very similar way as the Michael Jordan Jumpman logo case:
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-nike-lawsuit-jordan/nike-defeats-appeal-over-iconic-michael-jordan-photo-jumpman-logo-idUSKCN1GB2R7

EDIT: here's another article showing the Jordan photographs in question (warning: adblock-check)
https://www.forbes.com/sites/darrenheitner/2018/02/28/nike-earns-9th-circuit-win-in-jumpman-copyright-case/

@citizenerased while that would be amazing, it would be difficult (and costly) for Nintendo to argue that they own the patents to the button design of modern controllers. It could be considered industry standards by this point, in a similar way as the keyboard is to personal computers. While I don't have the actual cases to use as references, you can also probably look up the copyright issue regarding Pac-man's scoreboard and how they couldn't copyright it because it was too rudimentary. (May or may not apply to Gamevice v. Nintendo, but it's a cool bit of information.)

I may not have gotten the finer points right as I'm not a lawyer, but that's my basic understanding of the situation. TL;DR, Gamevice is stirring a hornet's nest that is very averse to settling.

Re: Rumour: Pokémon Switch's Release Date Could Be As Early As November This Year

SomeWriter13

@MjekuMati I hope by Whale they don't mean loading the game with TONS of in-game purchases and PokéLoot Boxes.

Personally I think November is an unlikely date. Maybe November 2019 is more likely, to give them more time to promote and advertise the game in the same way they did for Pokémon XY. They'd want to give people more time to buy Switches to ensure the game has a record-breaking launch.

Re: Nintendo Switch Has Now Sold 4 Million Units In Japan

SomeWriter13

@Hamguar I agree! I was arguing on another article here that MHW really isn't for us Switch users, and we're better off with an entirely new Switch-tailored game, anyway.
Since the original leaker of MHW information also mentioned Capcom was working simultaneously on such a game, I'm hopeful we'll get our own MH game maybe next year.

In the meantime I'm spending the interim playing Attack on Titan.

Re: Review: Attack On Titan 2 (Switch)

SomeWriter13

@Dom I got a copy of the game today but there doesn't appear to be an option for multiplayer (local or otherwise) Where in the menu did you go to access multiplayer?
I know the Another Mode becomes available after a playthrough, but I was hoping local co-op would be an option from the start.

Re: The OJO Projector For Switch Has Completed Another Successful Crowdfunding Campaign

SomeWriter13

Honestly if you need a projector, you're probably in a situation where you shouldn't really be playing docked. (I'm thinking safety and security issues, privacy, and simply "forcing the situation" on the people around you.)

Also, I have an Epson outdoor portable projector and that thing heats up something fierce even with a fan pointed at it. A projector this small would either have to output at poor resolution (from the comments here, this is the case) or burn through the surface it is placed on.

I'm also worried about the longevity of that bulb, not to mention the whole 3rd party dock bricking issue.

Re: Review: Attack On Titan 2 (Switch)

SomeWriter13

@LastKong there's something really special about local multiplayer, particularly for games like this and MonHun, that talking over a microphone through the internet just can't capture. While you can do local with multiple PS4/XB1 consoles and TVs and wifi, it's such a clunky and expensive proposition.
On that category, this version is superior. But of course if you want better graphics, by all means go with the PS4 and XBox1 versions. We all get to choose. Everybody wins.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Analysis On Dark Souls: Remastered

SomeWriter13

@starman292 I agree with you wholeheartedly. There was an article on Nintendolife a few months ago that was about 4K and I was firmly in the "it isn't going to be the standard for a loooong time, so Nintendo is better off investing in other parts of the hardware than the resolution for the time being."

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Analysis On Dark Souls: Remastered

SomeWriter13

@starman292 ahh, haha my bad. Was thinking of the newer Pro and Scorpion models.
It could also be taken as the usual flak against Nintendo, though. Even if it matches the regular PS4, there are always those who say "so it matches a years-old console, when 4K will be the new norm? Oh Nintendo, always late..."
