Are you excited about the SNES Mini?
Comments 330
Aw damn, I need this
Is this for real?
Yeah I want one please
I wonder if this will be the true finalized version of Star Fox 2?
Earthbound and Starfox 2 = buy
@andrew20 I can not hold my own thoughts
I guess we know why there's no Switch Virtual Console.
Day one purchase for me! Star Fox 2 sold it to me completely
Can't wait to not be able to buy this.
Cool! Wonder if it will release the same day in Europe. Great that they're including a second controller this time around, and great to have an unreleased game on it!
..too bad that it only has 21 games on it though. Would've expected 30 like the NES Classic, or at least 25, but oh well.
I'm shocked. /sarcasm
Surely Europe will get the much nicer PAL shell and controller. I'm not, however, liking that price nor the fact that there's only 21 games. I own nearly all of them already either on my original SNES or on VC. It is a quality list of games though.
Most crucially, how long are those controller leads?
Edit: Superior European version.
https://twitter.com/NintendoUK/status/879375387507269632
It'll also release on September 29th here in Europe.
Star Fox 2?
Classy
So does this make Star Fox 2 officially canon now?
An official release of Star Fox 2 is pretty impressive. Mario RPG, Secret of Mana, and FF6 are some essential SNES Squaresoft titles as well.
This is great news for scalpers who are running low on their NES mini stash.
Whaaaaaaat?!? Star Fox 2? Now you're talking. This is unprecedented. They'd better stock this right.
oh my god!!!!
Looks like they've sorted the FX chip emulation/legal issues. Sweet. Starfox 2 is a genuine surprise.
They look like real controllers too don't they? Seems to have the real ports at the front. Does that mean brand new SNES controllers? Great if so!!
EDIT: d'oh! Those port might look the same but they are of course mini! 😀
Not at all surprising but I didn't expect it to be announced this early.Only 21 games though, wait until @impurekind sees this
I was not interested int the NES mini.
... But I have to say that I'm really interested in this one!
STAR
FOX
TWO?!?!?!?!
That's it. I'm gonna beat you all in line
Aside from Star Fox 2, I already have all the games listed that I'd want to play. It does come with two controllers, though. That's a plus.
So, the FF III is actually FF VI, right ?
I gotta beat those scalpers this time!
... also, I'm wondering whether the EU version will be released without Earthbound considering that never released over here.
Wondering where the controllers plug in? the ports on the front look cosmetic.
Star Fox 2?! Boom!
Oh nice! I'm sure we'll all be able to pick up o-
** Finds out Starfox 2 will be exclusive to the SNES classic edition *
Congrats Nintendo, you just gave scalpers a reason to scalp this. Unless you produce more than a few dozen of them? Who am I kidding? It's Nintendo. I can't wait to be in work when it goes up for pre order and sells out within seconds.
OMG
@Sean161 pretty sweet
It's already out of stock everywhere!
Nice for this be official and Super FX chip games is a huge deal!
Holy mother of god! Starfox 2? And both the original Starfox and Yoshi's Island too? Someone pinch me: this is way too good to be real!!
>Starfox 2
Sold!
Please let it be in enough supplies.
Wait, Star Fox 2???
I'm taking this with a grain of salt.
Also disappointed that the pads are not the ones you can plug into a Wii Remote; like the limited Club Nintendo one in Japan.
I want some games to my Switch. Please!
Wait, Final Fantasy III is actually Final Fantasy VI?
... I forgot this confusing story.
This just makes this mini-console better, honestly.
I might be interested in the Super Famicom version. When I first saw the Super Famicom, I thought that was the look the US was getting.
@PurinPuff I doubt Nintendo would release an unfinished game. I'd say you're safe.
Ah crap, I'll definitely (be trying to) buy this. Though I'm really hoping they add Super Mario World and Super Mario All-Stars to it - I know SMW gets released for everything, but it's about the only game that I'll buy on everything. I never had an SNES as a child, so this'll be a really cool treat.
I am SO gonna buy this on day 1. And I'm a 100% sure I'll get it on the first day, mainly because nobody in my area buys Nintendo products, so I'm lucky!
Should I ask why they skipped Super Street Fighter II? UGH CAPCOM. But there's Mega Man X just like I wished for so it works out.
Can't wait to not be able to find one. Also locking a previously unreleased star fox game behind an inevitably hard to find retro plug n play kind of sucks.
Awesome. I just requested Sept 29th off from work. Now I just have to set my alarm for 5AM so I can be the first at the stores!
This is why no VC until late fall or early 2018 with the online service launch.
Snes Mini?
Yoshi's Island?
Star Fox 1 AND the 2?!?!?!? That second one that was never released?
Wow,Yoshi's Island aka "The Best Game Ever Made".
Presumably this is why VC has barely been mentioned recently then. Star Fox 2 is certainly an interesting inclusion (and will make it a real target for scalpers) as is Mario RPG. Definitely more tempted by this then the NES Mini. Hopefully they've learned from the stock issues for this time round...
I'm somewhat interested in buying one of these just to get the official pads.
Hopefully they will do a re-run of the NES classic at the same time, but that might be hoping for too much. Seems quite many were unhappy they couldn't get one.
Are you freaking kidding me? Star Fox 2?? THEY HAD BETTER KEEP STOCK UP FOR THIS OR THERE WILL BE RIOTS.
Okay forget the Salt this looks legit!!!
Nintendo, I hope you have plans for at least 30 million units!!! Scalpers will be all over this and I don't want to have to mug one to get a console.
I almost had a heart attack when I saw this in my Twitter! I will NOT miss this one!
not a single sports title?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I'd say the quality of games is higher (of course I know this is subjective), it also comes with 2 controllers, so the price is justified in my view.
$80? Is that a typo? Seems a bit much, especially considering it comes with fewer games than the NES classic. After scalpers stock up, it'll be $250 minimum.
Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting...wasn't this on Switch for full price? Jk
Let's hope the same nonsense won't befall this like it did with the NES Mini
Haha, Nintendo can shove it. After getting burned with the NES Mini, I'm not wasting time looking for this.
Star Fox 2???
Okay I sorta want this now.
Too bad the SNES Classic will probably be discontinued on September 30th...
So can Nintendo please clarify if this is a "limited run holiday item" or something they intend to produce fully? If the former, which it likely is, these will all be snapped up and scalped at high value anyway. I doubt most of us will get a chance to buy one.
Still, a must buy if I actually can. Mario RPG, StarFoxII are must haves, and I need one of the minis to sit next to my big real one.
Here's the million dollar question: Does the top of the housing yellow authentically to match the original?
No Chrono Trigger is sad
Either the best news of the year, or the worst...
9 less games for $10 more MSRP? And it doesn't have DKC 2+3? I'm afraid Nintendo saw how crazy we got over the NES mini and decided to push their luck.
@RoomB31 Ya, I didn't think about the 2 controllers.
@PurinPuff There have been people that have worked with Nintendo saying in interviews that they let them play a version of Starfox 2 that was more finished then any ROM out there in the interwebs, so I suspect its truly the intended finished game.
maybe this is another reason why virtual console is delayed on switch?
@getyourak DKC is there, but no Chrono Trigger.
@getyourak
Donkey Kong is on the list not Chrono Trigger though.
Too bad Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy II, ActRaiser and Turtles is Time isn't included, but it's great that FX chips games will be included!😊
@getyourak Look again, there's Donkey Country in the list of games.
As for Chrono Trigger, yeah... It's sad. Strange they didn't included it.
Maybe they don't have the rights?
This thing will be my birthday present if I can actually find one...
I'd buy it just for FF3, Kirby Superstar and Yoshi's Island alone. I don't care what I have to do, I have to get one of this.
The hunt, BEGINS.
I don't think anyone saw Starfox 2 coming, let alone original Starfox which has never had a VC rerelease along with the SNES Yoshi's Island.
Damn Nintendo, you've made it even more desirable now....
I MUST BE DREAMING!!! THIS IS AMAAAAAAAAAAZING!!!!!
Kind of mixed on this, considering that they skipped over Final Fantasy II (IV) and Chrono Trigger.
Well well.
That's 80$ well spent.
Before the list was announced I was sitting up here compiling a list of games that might appear on the SNES Mini and it looks like I wasn't too far off. Sadly no Super Mario All-Stars or Final Fantasy 2 or Chrono Trigger
@TwilightV I already have Chrono Trigger on the DS, so I don't mind.
the snes is one of my favorite game systems. it is a must buy for me. if they ever re-release the N64, i will buy that as well.
Hope that the controller cord will be longer than 3ft. Apart from that I am pretty excited!! 😁
Awesome but... 21 is it? Also, I hope this is rasily obtainable
Yes, guys and gals, it's all a rip off. It does not have that one game you want. Please don't buy it. That way I may have a chance to get one this time.
Where's Chrono Trigger?!
Maybe they want to avoid title screen dissonance, but really now, still calling the game "Final Fantasy III" in 2017? XD
Otherwise, a solid collection, and it's all the more awesome to get Star Fox 2 released officially and in [nominally] physical form at long last. But yoy guys had better preorder ASAP - I doubt the stock will surpass the "holiday limited edition" quota by much here as well, especially since meeting Switch demand likely remains Ninty's biggest concern now.
Seeing as I never even saw the NES mini live I'm more cautious about this than excited. I would love controller for this as SNES and N64 were the systems I grew up with but I'm going to hold my breath.
At least I still have my SNES so I'm not as desperate to own this like the NES Mini.
Should have included gave included Uniracers and Actraiser https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniracers https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ActRaiser
@Mopati Up to Square Enix I guess, and they just close FFIII/VI and Secret of Mana over CT. Still, the fact Mana is on there gives me hope for the Mana trilogy Collection to get a release outside of Japan.
All this hype over Star Fox 2. I never liked the game much but I guess lots of people are interested in playing it.
It sucks that the Super NES MINI gets Star Fox but nowhere else. I'd kill to be able to play it on my 3DS :/
Just the controller for me
Edit. Looking at the list of games. Looks like a great list of games if you don't have most of them.
... so where do I preorder?
I want to be excited and I want this badly, but I'm irritated in advance because I know Nintendo will be draconian with stock again meaning scalpers will make this $200 or better.
Cool! Sign me up for a preorder NOW.
OMG 😲 awesome
I wonder if ill ever be able to get a hold of one of these things though. Great list though.
@Lewieboy124 The first never even went up for preorder, at least in the US.
SNES Mini kinda temptating.
But, original SNES machine is still the best.
Alternative way ?
PolyMega, baby !
I hope Nintendo is planning to release Starfox 2 on a virtual console (Wii U, Switch, doubtful New 3ds) as well. That's the only game on the list I haven't played or owned and I'm not eager enough to buy the system for it.
When can we preorder?
Looks like I'll be actually playing it this time unlike my NES Mini.
Need this so bad.
O_O
NEED
IT
Very strange that Metroid isn't here. With all the hype around the new iterations you'd think this would be a perfect chance to let people play Super. And the nes classic had the original. I dnt understand that choice. But otherwise this looks awesome!
https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Misc-/Nintendo-Classic-Mini-Super-Nintendo-Entertainment-System/Nintendo-Classic-Mini-Super-Nintendo-Entertainment-System-1238330.html?utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=SNESMini%7CAnnouncement%7Cw26
@NEStalgia I think it will still be a "limited holiday run" but with more units this time. They'll still disappear as quickly though. Then when they're gone, that's when they'll announce Switch VC.
@Dus Super Metroid is on the list
I need it. Like NEED it. Luckily my birthday is a month later. Hopefully my parents are smart about preorders and stuff and can get their hands on it. If not, they'll have a son diagnosed with chronic depression.
This literally has everything I would want except Chrono trigger.
edit: It's also missing DKC2 and 3
Interesting that Contra 3 will be on the European version instead of Super Probotector. Also, Star Wing has been replaced by Star Fox.

Hope for a N64 Classic Edition!
Too bad there's still a lack of puzzle games
All the games worth getting I've already got on Virtual Console.
More expensive and less games? No Donkey Kong Country 2? I don't think so sonny Jim.
Only Donkey Kong Country is here. I wanted the trilogy. No purchase for me.
Any mention of it being "holiday season only?"
Still salty over someone stealing my NES Classic at Walmart. Not sure about this. Especially considering I have most of the games on my Wii U.
Definitely have to get this one, if only for SF2 alone though a proper copy of Yoshi's Island is also welcome.
Plus, I seem to be in the minority with my preference for the look of the North American SNES design. The alternate international design always looked like an answering machine, not a video game system (although i do like the four-color buttons).
@OorWullie Oh, crazy! Either I totally missed that in my excitement or they added it since I saw it. Great news! Thanks fur correcting me 😉
Maybe Nintendo can make enough to keep it under $200 on eBay?
That's as optimistic as I can get.
I think people are missing the point about what games are included and what games are missing. That's like thinking people buy amiibo b/c of the in game content they unlock. This is nostalgia in a ribbon and bow.
I wonder if this $79 box will be on shelves next to the $79 old 2DS or if the old 2DS goes away when the $149 New 2DS XL releases? New 3DS may also make another US appearance. New 3DS XL is still out there. And Switch. Imagine if the $60 NES Mini returns? I'm sure it could easily sell another 2mil. Nintendo is flooding the hardware market.
Instead of releasing a whole new hardware for this, Nintendo should've just done like what Rare did for Rare Replay. 30 great games, $30. Release them on the Switch - no stock problems (except for the Switch it self but meh) - convenience.
I guess this is just for the nostalgia fanatics.
I wonder if they'll be announcing eShop connectivity for buying more games? I always said a great idea would be mini compilation cartridges that plug into the mini console to expand the game selection. Each cartridge could have multiple games from a certain publisher (Capcom pack, Konami pack etc).
I'm intrigued how the controllers will connect to the unit. Those ports at the front don't look functional.
As I said last time: who would want a NES Mini compared to this? That’s the perfect software lineup.
@Tsurii
The Japanese to english versions of Final Fantasy are all wonked up, until you get to VII. 1=1, 2=4, 3=6. and then the REAL 2,3, and 5 never saw an English release until the PS1 (maybe GBA?) remasters.
Now all that being said....
FF3/6 is one of the absolute best storytelling progression even by modern standards. Absolutely worth your time.
Ya'll expecting to buy one of these at a reasonable price
Very good selection but without Donkey Kong Country 2, this is not even a consideration for me.
I don't understand why they don't go back and reproduce the NES mini. Why drop that item and go to this, when the other is still sold out and never came close to meeting demand?
Can't wait to show up at the midnight release of this and find out my local stores got 6 of them again! Woo!
I'm surprised they're doing it so soon. It answers the question of how do you pick 30 games for the SNES. Nintendo's answer is you don't bother trying. I won't be picking this up for two reasons. First, I'm not a big SNES fan and this list of games isn't appealing enough to me, especially since I don't like some SNES classics such as Contra 3 and Castlevania 3, among others. Second, I really disliked how they handled the mini NES and have lost interest in little emulation boxes that come from Nintendo.
However, credit where credit is due, it's cool to see them finally put out Starfox 2. I suspect it was a condition of the licensing agreement related to the Super fx chips. Nintendo would have to do that to finally release the SNES version of Yoshi's Island.
If they have one in stock I will buy it.
Wow, that's awesome, especially seeing Star Fox 2 getting released. I'm actually kind of interested in this for that reason alone. I'm pretty disappointed Donkey Kong Country 2 isn't there, though. It's among Super Metroid and Yoshi's Island as one of the very best games on the system. DKC1 is great, but not even close to 2. That said, I already have a SNES and a copy of DKC2 so... I guess the lack of it doesn't affect me much, just seems weird to leave it out.
Please......PLEASE!!!!!!!! Make enough Nintendo. I beg you, please.
This would be quite the deal for me, because the SNES is a Nintendo console I haven't played many games from. Super Metroid and Super Mario World and that's about it. I've been wanting to play the original Star Fox for years and now you're telling me the previously unreleased sequel will be on this thing too?
SOLD..... (as long as there are enough).
@Agent72 I'd guess it's the controller connectors. They probably wanted to make both, but there's no reason to not make more in-demand NES and start making SNES, it's not like doing more NES first for a few years before going to SNES will free up production line.s But the NES used those silly Wii connectors, the manufacturing of which probably ended back when the WiiU launched. They probably used up their parts bins and there could never be another without manufacturing an obscure connector that will never be used on anything else again.
@OorWullie @Boidoh Well for the nostalgia fanatics as a die hard item, the physical SNES Mini is more or less a giant Amiibo that happens to have an HDMI port and plays games. And the sales of these things mimic Amiibo too.
But the REAL audience for these things (those for whom it's not a collectable Amiibo) is the bunch of people who do NOT intend to buy a Switch. It's a quick reminder of Nintendo brands catering to nostalgia for non-current Nintendo gamers.
But we all want our darned mini-SNES Amiibo.
I can't help but wonder if Switch VC will be sold in bundles of games like this instead of individual titles.
There is a part of me that really wants this, but there is the part of me that points out that I have purchased a lot of these games already on systems I still own. Star Fox 2 is probably not enough to push me over the edge.
It's a good collection, but missing some of the must haves back then like NBA Jam, Final Fight, Act Raiser, Sim City, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy II (IV), and probably a few I am forgetting.
hmmmm..... I think it would have been nice to include 9 more games to keep it at 30 like the NES Classic.
1. DKC 2
2. DKC 3
3. Actraiser
4. Chrono Trigger
5. NBA Jam
6. SimCity
7. Bust-a-move
8. Pilotwings
9. Zombies Ate my Neighbors
My picks would include The Lost Vikings, Super Offroad, Sunset Riders and Super Bomberman
I'd be hyped if not for the fact scalpers will probably again buy them all.
The resellers will be happy I'm sure. I have the "must have" games on my New 3DS so I'll pass on this.
Replace Kirby's Dream Course with Pilotwings, and add Chrono Trigger and DKC2 and 3 and this would be perfect.
Haha, I'll be out of town when that thing releases, which means I have no chance of getting it.
Although, really, I have the majority of these games on other systems anyway.
I'll pass.
Great list, though.
Will they be making more than 7 of them?
I really hope I can get one. Its nintendo so I will never see one in the wild lol.
No Chrono Trigger? Well, this one is an ACTUAL buy, unlike it's father...
I guess the scalpers know how their going to make extra cash this holiday season.
Yup, I'm going to buy it. My favorite Nintendo console of all-time. Still have an old one, but it can be 50/50 if it decides to work.
Now we need a N64 mini =D
Very hyped for this. I agree with others that a few more titles like DKC2, DKC3, Pilotwings, NBA JAM, Zombies Ate My Neighbors and others would have been ideal. But I can't complain with Earthbound and Starfox 2 among others and dual controllers included.
Now bring on the Nintendo 64 Classic!
I hate Nintendo so much right now. And yet for some reason I'm going to buy this thing.
Always loved this design over the UK and Japanese ones. IF I can ever find one, I'll buy it. *sigh.....one can dream.
If I don't have to break an arm and a leg to get one (Nintendo world here in New York always gets better stock of intendo products) the I'll get one. Otherwise, considering every game I want from that is already available on the virtual console or on IOS, it's not too appealing
Star Fox 2 + FF3 + Super Castlevania = YEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Unlike the NES Edition, I might get this one. If that's even possible.
@NEStalgia You seem to have gotten that part about the controller connectors wrong, since it clearly states in the article that the SNES Mini works with Wii's Classic Controller and Classic Controller Pro accessories, unless they've added Bluetooth support and you have to connect the Classic Controllers wirelessly via the Wiimote.
BTW in case anyone is curious, according to VGPC this collection is worth $703, plus whatever Star Fox 2 could be valued at.
Really, really excited for this and to finally try out Star Fox 2. Just hoping Nintendo makes more than 37 of them....
I'm not thrilled with the line up.
No:
Harvest Moon
DKC 2 and 3
DKC 3
Pocky and Rocky 1 and 2
Mega Man X2 and 3
Mario Paint
Earthworm Jim games
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Mortal Kombat games
Lufia games
Chrono Trigger
FF2
Sunset Riders
Sparkster
It's not a fail, but it's not great either.
People complaining about the number of games seem to overlook the fact that this comes with two controllers now, instead of the single one that came with the NES Mini.
Speaking of that smaller list of games: would that imply that a N64 Mini has yet another 9 games less, making it only 12 games? There better be two controllers + two rumble packs & two memory cards, then...
And if there is ever going to be a GameCube Mini, then there will probably only be 6 or 8 games on it, if they keep lowering the number...
Hmmm.. Not biting this time. Hoping that they port SF2 to the switch or 3DS virtual console once they stop making these.
OH. MY. GOD
@ThanosREXXX Haha, good point about 12 games for an N64 Classic. Then again, you'd be hard-pressed to find more than 12 N64 games that are still playable.
Sending lots of disappointmented people sept 30th
Yes please, do want!
Let the stock madness begin anew...
Getting to Play Star Fox 2 would be cool, but I ain't shelling out $80 for it when I can play most of those games on my Wii U.
@ThanosReXXX It's got to be Bluetooth since they show the connectors on the front of the machine and they're miniaturized SNES connectors. Unique to the machine but probably cheaper to mold than the complicated USB-Like Wii connectors. Unless it has Wiimote connectors on the rear, but that would be an awful lot of connectivity for a "disposable" machine (more than Switch has, in fact.)
An N64 classic mini would require a deal with Microsoft since they own rareware now.
Pre-orders are up on GAME, £79.99.
@niner Twelve games I'd expect are
Super Mario 64
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Mario Kart 64
Paper Mario
Starfox 64
Kirby 64
Donkey Kong 64
Super Smash Bros
F-Zero X
Yoshi's Story
Mario Party 2
@Aurumonado No, since it wouldn't include any Rare's own games other than Donkey Kong 64 which they don't own themselves.
I am so pre-ordering the SNES Classics. Star Fox 2 being included along with Star Fox and Yoshi's Island makes this a game I cannot refuse.
@Bass_X0
An N64 collection without any Rareware games?
@Bass_XO Great list. My comment was mostly tongue-in-cheek but I think you got the correct list. I'd personally swap out Kirby 64 for Pokemon Puzzle League but your list is spot on otherwise. And yes, unfortunately we wouldn't get GoldenEye or Perfect Dark although those games are not really playable anymore.
@Aurumonado That's the state of the world we live in now, thanks to Microsoft.
Cools, but I've already got most of the games I'm interested in on Virtual Console, so I doubt I'll get it.
Star Fox 2? WHAT THE CRAP.
I'm already sick over the pre-order anxiety.
I've seen more Star Fox 2 hype in the last hour than I did during the entirety of the Star Fox Zero campaign loooooool (nb4 Do a Barrel Roll)
The scalpers of the world are salivating right now!
This I intend on getting if for no other reaso than to see what the fuss about earthbound is
Can we now finally agree there is and will be no Virtual Console on the Switch? This is the strategy of selling games from this point forward. Next year we'll probably see another iteration of the NES Mini.
@niner Well, that depends on your taste and/or fond memories. Personally, I can quite easily list well over 30 N64 games that I still like and enjoy to play, even on my current HD TV.
I could probably even list 50...
I need this in my life. I am old enough to have played the NES for a long while, but this is the console that made me a gamer. Most of those games I never got tired of playing.
Damn you, Amazon UK for letting US customers order, but not ship outside of the UK. Screw you.
@Rumncoke25 You can download it on Wii U, remember?
Last year there was NES classic edition with 30 games, this year SNES classic edition with 21 games, next year N64 Classic edition with 10 games?
They said they had learned with the NES classic, they included a second controller, point for them but SNES had more great games like Illusion of Gaia, TMNT4, MM X 2 and 3, DKC 2 and 3, Magical Quest, Aladdin, and Nintendo couldn´t include at least 50 games.
goodness gracious
@ThanosReXXX Yes, but I doubt many of those thirty or fifty would be possible today to release today given the current license issues.
Heck yeah, this is on my pre-order list now.
@NEStalgia I don't see the difficulty or complication of those Wii connectors at all, so why that would be more or less difficult is beyond me. Since the tech is old, manufacturing costs less and they'll probably have tons lying around anyways, for repair purposes.
Putting a Bluetooth receiver on a PCB is almost just as much trouble as putting a physical connector on it, so that doesn't fly with me. There are probably other reasons for them not to use those, unless this isn't the final model.
Guess we'll find out soon enough. Not by ourselves of course, because chances are I won't be able to buy one of these either, much like the NES Mini. It was never even in stores here for more than a day.
But we'll find out in one of Alex's video reviews...
How long until someone uses the SNES Classic to grab a ROM dump of the completed Star Fox 2 and post it online?
Probably not that long.
@Bass_X0 I was just talking about how many N64 games I still like, not about how many could be/will be on a potential N64 Mini, so I think you misunderstood that comment.
Meh. I'm pretty sure my SNES from my childhood still works if I really wanted to play on a SNES. Otherwise all of the games I need I can purchase on VC and can play on my Wii U which is much more convenient since it is my current Nintendo system.
80 dollars when you really only want a single game... I prefer to pay the real console for less (even if the actual games would not be included).
If this wasn't a "special chip" game, maybe some people would have "ripped" Star Fox 2 away from the console to put it on cartridges and sell it. xD
(though, if it happens to become a ROM, I don't mind it)
@FX102A The European Club Nintendo offered the SNES Wii Classic Controllers too - I own one. It cost 8,000 Stars 😁
I'm interested for sure. I would much rather have gotten more games and only one controller though, especially since the overwhelming majority of the games are strictly single player. Peeps can always run out and buy another controller for Super Mario Kart, or heaven forbid if Nintendo actually made enough of these, your friend could just bring the controller from their own SNES classic.
But $80 for actually good emulation of several classic games and a sweet physical collector/nostalgia item seems good. A Link to the Past and FF3/6 are some of my favorite games ever.
@ThanosReXXX The Wii connectors were a totally custom fab though, the tooling for which was probably shut down half a decade ago. The SNES connectors are a lot simpler a connector....more or less a molded plastic shell with 7 round pins straight plugged/soldered onto it. Just an oddly shaped serial connector, really, with the actual connector body part of the shell moudling itself. No extra part to make, just wired connections to make. The metal sheath shaping on the Wii connector alone would have required custom tooling. It may not be particularly expensive to make Wii connectors, but they'd need to tool a whole fabrication line to make an obsolete connector just for a short production retro console. They're never selling Wiimotes ever again. (Untill the Wii Classic Ultra-Mini anyway....)
Edit: So basically Wii connectors would need a separate production line cranking out connectors, while these can be made all in the main production line as part of the machine. Though you're right about the BT on a PCB, but even that would be part of the PCB fab rather than a separate hardware module made off to the side.
Good, all the nonsense about Super FX games can finally be silenced.
At last. Hope the UK model doesn't run in 50Hz. I only ever had the US 60Hz model back in the day. Fingers crossed!
Retailers in Canada better offer pre-orders. I've never been more stressed than trying to frantically place an order for the NES Classic when Best Buy Canada got their second shipment. Offer up pre-orders so Nintendo can make enough for everyone to get one. They seriously cannot afford another NES Classic PR blunder, not when the Switch has given them goodwill amongst consumers (and even that is tenuous at best given the low stock).
@alex167 A lot of those NES games were filler though.
I'll get this and hope that this I actually finish a Link to the Past. With this, I would have both Nintendo consoles I missed due to being too small.
The problem is that Juegos de Video Latam is going to charge, easily, double the US price for this. Damn them...
Looks awesome, but stupid timing imo. People are still pissed about the NES Mini (or lack thereof), Switch's first holiday season, New 2DS just released. Slow down Nintendo!
Needs Chrono and at least one of ff4 or ff6. But this looks great. Hopefully I am lucky enough to pick up one of the 4 dozen units being produced.
Dammit! I literally have all of those but the Star Foxes on my Wii/U. Can I justify the price for 2 games?!?
Game.co.uk are taking pre-orders but it took less than 5 minutes for website to go down. Best grab one if you can, they're gonna go quick.
To everyone who decreed that Starfox and Yoshi's Island couldn't be on the SNES mini because of licensing issues that will never be resolved: told you so.
@NEStalgia Wiimotes and controllers working with them were still manufactured up until 2 years ago, or maybe even less. Remember that custom Wiimote line, based upon various Nintendo characters? Those were released 4 years ago, and after that, a whole slew of other controllers using the same ports were manufactured, both by Nintendo themselves, and by licensed producers, such as those GameCube shaped Pro Controllers.
And it really isn't as difficult as you make it sound. Most, if not all hardware was made at FoxCon, and both the machine instructions for the production line and the various molds/matrices for those connectors will still exist. To implement that into a new production line/manufacturing chain, is a matter of less than a day.
And slight misdirection on comparing them to the SNES connectors, since I was talking about the difficulty of putting in a Wii connector vs a Bluetooth receiver, NOT vs a SNES connector.
@Markiemania95 I wasn't too sure if it had, unfortunately I missed them. Likely cost a tonne on eBay now. Had been hoping this would be a second chance.
Great, but why did everything get just a little bit worse? The price goes up yet the number of games comes down. These are digital copies of games from 25 years ago; there is no additional cost involved in putting SNES games on this thing vs putting NES games on the NES Classic Edition. It already felt pretty tight with the NES selection of games, and even though the titles included in the SNES Classic Edition are generally great, there's even more missing games you'd want this time around. At least the system comes with two controllers this time though, which is great.
And Sega just recently announced its latest Genesis/Mega Drive Classic Game Console will come with around 40 official Genesis/Mega Drive games, plus around roughly 40 indie titles, as well as two wireless controllers and the ability to play all the old Genesis/Mega Drive carts in the machine too, for the same price.
For Christ sake Nintendo, why must you always do something to annoy me!
@OorWullie Wait indeed: See my comment above. . .
U bet Imma get this!
@Tsurii FFIII was the English name for the original release of FFVI. II, III, and V were never localized, so IV and VI had their numbers changed to avoid confusion.
Just pre-ordered mine on Games website although I think £79.99 is a little expensive as the Nes mini was only £49.99 yes you get an extra controller but the Nes Mini had 9 more games. I also hope they don't make the same stupidly short controllers again.
@ThanosReXXX Well I'm applying some matter of assumption, but I'm assuming they had containers full of individual parts like connectors, PCBs etc. mass produced during a few large production runs during the Wii era, so they were still making new shells and such using those components until they depleted their reserves. That's some assumption but seems to fit the Nintendo mold.
I just can't imagine the complexity of a proprietary, durable, separate connector doesn't end up costing more than adding prefab BT receiver to the stock PCB design on a relatively low margin product (though it looks like they've increased margin this time which might make them willing to make more of them.)
" Most, if not all hardware was made at FoxCon,"
Honestly that is pretty much the most terrifying fact there can be, all other matters aside....
@impurekind Yes, the product is horrible, at a terrible price. Which is why they will sell out everywhere in less than 4 minutes
I'm kinda surprised that they left out DKC2 and 3. I'm also very surprised they're having Star Fox 2 and Yoshi's Island. I'm still hyped up to hopefully get a copy!
@wizzgamer It's £69.99 at Smyths, collection only if you have one local! Worth picking upto get it £10 cheaper, pre-orders up now i've just got mine
Wow is that purple brick the USA version, bloody hell it's ugly, great announcement though
I would've saved Star Fox 2 for the Virtual Console. This isn't the place for it imo. This product doesn't need Star Fox 2. This is a nostalgia product and I think most people have more nostalgia for the (strangely absent...) likes of Donkey Kong Country 2, Chrono Trigger, Super Bomberman, Pilotwings, etc. than for Star Fox 2 (seeing as they actually existed).
@impurekind And your first comment started off so positively...
Almost made my jaw drop to the floor, actually.
And I would hate to be in their shoes. They're not trying to anger people, they're trying to find a nice mix of games that anyone could, and SHOULD be happy with. And we're getting two controllers this time as well, so that's also a nice feature.
If they would have to listen to everyone to be able to compile a list of all of their favorites, then we would probably end up with a list of well over 200 games, and that is obviously not very realistic.
But yeah, that's people for you: a Dutch proverb says "offer them a finger, and they'll grab your whole hand", meaning it's never enough...
Any US retailers taking preorder?
@impurekind Let it goooooo, let it goooooo, can't hold it back anymooooooore
Lol but seriously, Nintendo will never learn how to sell retro games from GOG.com and the like.
Huh??? WHERE ARE THE SHOOT 'EM UPS???????
Axelay? Super R-Type? R-Type III? Gradius III? U.N. Squadron? Phalanx? Darius Twin? Etc.........
WTH, Nintendo???
No Goemon/Mystical Ninja?
I though that one was a given seeing how Konami always releases it pretty fast for every Nintendo console that has a SNES Virtual Console.
If the Japanese game list differs in any way, I'm pretty sure they have it. This or the second one.
@SuperToe I know, right? Even Parodius or Pop'n Twinbee would've been nice. This is just insane.
Or did they think Star Fox 1 and 2 already fit that genre?
And where are the puzzle games? Panel de Pon (Tetris Attack) is pretty much the best puzzle game ever, and it was released by Nintendo, I have no idea why they didn't include it either.
People saying this is a bad price, it's really not. If you bought all the games on the Wii-U VC, it would be $138. That doesn't include the games that aren't on the Wii-U, (Final Fantasy III, Secret of Mana, Star Fox, and Yoshi's Island). Plus the never before released, Star Fox 2! And the price of these games doesn't count the SNES controller and system that comes in the SNES Classic Edition. They might overcharge the VC prices but it's not any cheaper (mostly) buying the real thing. So it's worth it to me!
@NEStalgia Other than the slightly different shape, it really is no more difficult than adding a USB/USB-C connector, even though these are more widely available, due to them being universal.
But even so, the thing is, that once the matrices are made and the production line is programmed, all costs are already taken care of in that regard. If all of that is still in their possession, and I'm betting it is, then it takes next to no effort in time and money to start production again. Factories like FoxCon always keep room/machines available for whatever instant order or production line that might have to be added, so that too is covered in the schedule and budget of both companies.
EDIT
But it is a moot point anyway, since they've obviously not chosen for those connectors. Even though technically, there certainly were little reasons for them not to have done this. Oh, well...
Oh boy. Is almost that time of year again? Where everyone starts to hate each other over an imaginary hoax console that no one can find!?
LEEEEEET'S GET READY TO RUUUUUMBLLLLLLLLLLLE!
@NEStalgia 4 minutes?
More like 4 seconds!
Be honest, how long have you had the shell of this article ready to post once the announcement was made?!
@impurekind from what I read Nintendo was barely making a profit on NES mini. The higher price is necessary. Also, the third party games you desire aren't free to slap onto any old Nintendo product. For every 3rd party license deal they do the price of the unit goes up higher.
I will gladly buy one for Star Fox 2, but at the very least I will settle for the controllers sold separately, provided they work with the Wii/Wii U like the NES Classic.
Wow Starfox 2 that is freaking amazing!
It's a good list but, it would be perfect if Nintendo could have just added a few more games.
Stunt Race FX 🏁
DKC2
Megaman X2
NBA JAM
CronoTriger
Sunset Riders
@Baker1000 Longer than you think.
Observe the NES Mini unboxing by Alex.
NES has 3 letters. There are 3 posters in the background. Alex has opened his mouth in the shape of a triangle. The box has been slightly torn and opened, also in the shape of a triangle. Alex has positioned the box, his arms, and the Nintendo Life logo on his shirt in the shape of a triangle. His nose is also suspiciously in the shape of a triangle.
Coincidence? You decide.
I'm sure the media, high dollar collectors, and scalpers will enjoy this. I'd love to have one but will probably never see like the NES classic
@mikegamer I was able to preorder from Amazon.co.uk an hour ago and I live in the US.
OMG! That line up, I can't believe they got Super Mario RPG and FF6 on it....that combined with Yoshi's Island, Link to the Past, Mega Man X, Kirby's Dream Course and Super Star, Contra 3. Donkey Long Country. 2 Controllers. DAAANG! So much goodness.
Sounds like it's going to be a limited release, based on last time, it's good that they are mentioning this early.
Per the picture, not sure if that is the final product, but hopefully they'll opt to use the input plug as either the Wii connector or USB (less likely), as that can give it reusability elsewhere.
Nintendo is so spot on with everything right now, I just can't believe how well they're doing!
@ottospooky I'm pretty sure they will release EarthBound alongside it. Same with Super Mario RPG and Final Fantasy III: they were never released for the SNES in Europe, but they were later on Virtual Console.
Plus the NES Classic Mini had Final Fantasy on it as well, and that one wasn't released on the NES in Europe either.
Star Fox 2 and Snes Classic Edition? it's going to be a bloodbath when this gets released.
@Alikan The inclusion of a second controller can justify a slight price hike, but there's no good reason for not including the same amount of games--only fanboys are going to argue otherwise and throw around crap like "licensing" costs (especially considering the NES Classic Edition/Mini has around twice as many different publishers game's included).
Sega has around 40 official Genesis/Mega Drive titles included with its Genesis/Mega Drive Classic Game Console, plus another 40 indie titles, as well as two wired controllers and the ability to use all your old physical Genesis/Mega Drive carts with it too, and it costs the same price. And the sound has apparently even been addressed this time around too.
There's literally a third less games in the SNES Classic Edition/Mini than we got with the NES Classic Edition/Mini, at nearly twice the price.
@NEStalgia The product is great, but you just get less games than I think you should for that price. Even just sticking with the 30 found in the NES Classic Edition would have been fine, but Nintendo just had to go and reduce the amount of included titles by a whole third while actually increasing the price to nearly double.
If you have a Wii and Wii U, the only exclusives on the list are Star Fox and Star Fox 2 - so use that to make your informed decision. For me, I'll probably pass as I did on the NES Classic - as much as I'd love to collect them both, I fear they'd just gather dust.
https://tinyurl.com/y9kqneob
@ThanosReXXX It's cool that they included an additional controller, but they still could and should have stuck with 30 included games imo. Nearly doubling the price but removing a whole third of the included games is just frustrating.
Here's hoping they at least made the controller cords a practical length this time around.
Or is that just asking for too much too?
The give us two feet and we ask for eight--to use a variation of your proverb--or an actual practical length to put it another way.
Star Fox 2 makes this for me, assuming it's the full version we supposedly haven't seen.
Let's just hope they'll actually keep this product going longer than the Virtual Boy's lifespan this time!
@impurekind An article on the front page states the cords are longer, 5 feet I believe. And sure, they could have added more games, but they didn't, so that's why I quoted that proverb.
It's their initiative, so they decide and we either accept it and buy it, or we don't, but moaning about it or even petitioning for more isn't going to change a damn thing, so it seems quite useless to me to spend my precious energy in doing so.
And besides the extra controller, they did take the effort to finally complete Star Fox 2, so there's that as a nice bonus as well...
Street Fighter II = Buy!
just going through list again only 20 games but wow what a 20
@impurekind Makes you wonder if this will be an annual series with a different collection of games in each model? Or if they're trying to keep the list down to make whatever VC package they introduce more appealing.
It's quite annoying they never made it 30 games because there are so many they've missed out. What's wrong with throwing in the other Final Fantasy games, and the rest of the DKC trilogy? Super Mario RPG, Secret of Mana but no Chrono Trigger? Did they get worried about paying Square Enix too much royalty money? I guess they thought they had to take away some of the generosity to make up for adding Star Fox 2 to the package...
I had a double take over Star Fox 2 in that list. Wow!
@impurekind feel free to play sega's titles for free online with limited commercial interruption. If you aren't going to buy this set and think the Atgames Sega Genesis=an official Nintendo miniSNES then go for it. Enjoy it!
Don't care. I want VC on switch.
Apart from the obvious Star Fox 2, I own all those on my original SNES!
Yeah I fully expect this to go the same route as the NES classic Nintendo is gonna Nintendo.
If i know them right it gonna be nes mini all over again so not gonna bother.
@Cyberbotv2 I tried so hard to get a nes mini for so long. im in the same camp as you, this just makes me angry.
this is like Nintendo giving me the middle finger
Dead.
Can't wait to see this be even harder to find and then sell for $500 on ebay to the bulk of humanity.
But that said, I am drooling again.
Take off one of the Kirby games and give us Chrono Trigger, tho!
seriously I know issue with NE mini but pre orders are up. If you want it just bloody pre order the thing. Or wait till week after its sold out & complain
According to a news site I just read that Nintendo plans to make "significantly more" SNES Classic Editions than they made of the NES Classic Edition.
@Krisi Insane. Yes. Also, TWO Kirbys and NO Chrono Trigger??
...not to mention no Pilotwings, TMNT or... ACT RAISER!!!
Only 21 games? Bah!!
@eltomo
Wow you have a huge game collection, I'm envious.
@Nico07 & there will be a bigger demand for it than the NES
Mamma Mia! STAR FOX 2!!!!
I mean, it has all the others I ever wanted (Earthbound!!!) but yippee!!!
WHAT!!! NO SENSIBLE SOCCER!!!!! Imagine how class that would have been!!!!!!
Pre-ordered anyway.
@SuperToe Well, I think the two Kirby games are justified. Kirby Super Star is pretty much my favorite platformer ever (well, the remake on DS is better, but still), and Dream Course is a completely different, really imaginative, and fun spinoff title. Actually, I would've liked to see Dream Land 3 on it as well, as it plays pretty differently from both of them, even if it's the lesser of the SNES Kirby platformers.
I guess all we have to look forward to on the Switch until 2018 for Virtual Console games are NeoGeo titles? Go Nintendo!
@NEStalgia
Hm...
I heard some arguments about whether they need or not about SNES Mini.
But after all, I think I might interested with PolyMega.
What do you think about PolyMega ?
I heard PolyMega will be released on this year.
Indeed, SNES Mini looks temptating, but PolyMega offers multi consoles play + enables to read actual Physical cart / disc, so I can select my games specifically.
And I can play ALL PS1 games with ALL SNES games together.
Tetris, Harvest Moon, Pilotwings, etc. would be nice.
@NEStalgia God only knows.
Only a matter of time before the hackers open this up and we can choose our own top 20
@Tsurii its final fantasy 6, but in America it was released as 3 because the actual final fantasy 2,3 and 5 were never released in America
@ThanosReXXX I told someone this the other day: Saying that moaning about something is a waste of time is probably the worst bit of "advice" you could ever give to anyone.
If you don't kick up a fuss when you disagree with something, whatever it may be, and no one else ever kicks up a fuss in this life, then nothing will ever get better.
Now, that doesn't mean the person kicking up the fuss has to be the one to solve the problem, but by making a noise then other people can and will hear about it, and one of them at least has the chance of eventually making a difference.
And, the example I will use here is when I was talking to my flatmate the other day about the fees our agency was charging, and he kept saying "I don't care" every time I complained about how absurd they were, like he was just trying to stop me moaning about it.
But imagine if everyone was just like him . . . this kind of thing would never have happened:
http://www.gov.scot/News/Releases/2012/11/illegal-charges-on-tenants22112012
It was a petition started by a normal tenant, who was frustrated and angry at the ridiculous fees her agency was charging, that helped bring this about.
So, I moan about all the things I'd like to be fixed, and I hope a lot of people hear me too, and maybe one of them will actually do something about it eventually.
To me that's why you moan, particularly if you know you're not one of the people who's likely to actually go out there and actively change the world yourself.
PS. I'm happy about the extra controller, and happy Star Fox 2 is included (even though I personally think it's kinda meh, and not a patch on the seminal original), but I still wish they'd at least kept the same number of games as the NES Classic Edition/Mini (30), especially since the price of the system has nearly doubled. Also, to correct myself from before, they aren't actually including the power adapter in the UK again, which is just infuriating.
Huh... no Final Fight or Act Raiser? Those were a couple of the highlights at launch.
Any ideas of pre-order slaught... I mean date?
@Anti-Matter IF the emulation turns out to be good, PolyMega looks awesome! The ability to play original cartridges is invaluable, and can't be compared!
The Game UK site has been f**ked by Mario - the illustration says it all!
Glad I got my pre order in early - hope it comes good coz I'm really excited about this.
@impurekind Yeah, I know how you feel about that, but sorry to disappoint you that were it concerns petty matters like a hobby, I simply don't want to spend any of my precious energy or sanity on it.
If it would concern bigger things such as human rights or something life & death related, you'll find me on the barricade right next to you, but people always nagging and moaning about more games is really annoying me, big time.
Let's just say that if they were my kids, I'd smack them over the head, much like my dad would have done to me if I'd whine over such a petty thing.
Completely agreed on the example you gave, though. But then again: that clearly falls into the category that I do take seriously, so I'd probably be smacking your flatmate over the head for that one for not protesting...
As for that double price: that's probably related to the double amount of bits compared to the NES Mini...
Although on a serious note: the games are definitely more advanced, so that could be where they see more value in them, and as such a higher price, justified or not. It's their logic, not mine.
I made a joke about this earlier, but with that in mind, I really wouldn't be surprised if any follow-up mini device, be it N64 or GameCube, will have less games with every system they release, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if a N64 Mini only got 12 games, and a GameCube Mini only 6 or 8.
But I guess we'll have to wait and see if they're even going to make these. First order of business is trying to actually acquire a Mini this time around. Never saw the NES Mini anywhere near me...
Could have announced at e3.
Also wonder of they downloaded starfox 2 from the internet too?
Makes sense why they didn't announce any VC stuff yet. They wanted to get this out the door.
This will be impossible to find. I'm not hopeful that Ninty learned any lessons from the previous system.
Managed to get one from GAME about 10 minutes ago.
@ThanosReXXX I guess it all comes down to what you consider important. I think fighting for the things you love in this life, be that games or whatever, is just as meaningful to the individual as fighting for any other thing.
Sure, life, liberty and all that . . . but happiness too.
The games being more advanced is ultimately totally irrelevant when it's just a bunch of digital copies being loaded onto basically a glorified emulator; there is not additional cost on Nintendo's part to do this just because they're SNES games vs NES games. So, it's charging more just because certain people let it get away with it; but I don't want to be one of those people who just quietly accepts that.
The extra controller is cool, for sure, but that's still a 33% price hike with 33% less titles to actually enjoy. It's a hard pill for me to swallow.
And, some people mention licensing too--but there's actually twice as many licensed developer's games on the NES Classic Edition/Mini than there are on the SNES Classic Edition/Mini. So that's not a good argument/defense for the 33% less games at a 33% higher price here either.
It's just Nintendo being typical Nintendo--and I'm passionate enough about both Nintendo and games in general to kick up a fuss about it.
A far better line-up compared to the NES mini. Color me excited
Nice list, but man, did they ever leave some gems off.
That's a pretty nice lineup of games from such a legendary console, missing a few, but with the number of amazing games the SNES had released over its run, is not too surprising. Gamers who missed out on these are in for a treat.
Guess Nintendo finally got in contact with whoever owns the corpse of Argonaut and ironed out ownership of the FX chip rights, because it sure is nice to see that Star Fox 2 is getting to officially see the light of day after all this time, that being the thing that really makes me want one more then anything else. Hopefully the emulation will be good, since if it is not perfect (the music particularly) then I'd rather play on my original carts.
They had better not underestimate the demand for this. Maybe offer a channel to buy it from them directly and things more difficult for the army of scalpers out there lurking?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE The cords are 5 ft long. Still too short!!
Seriously, is no-one else here planning to use NintendoLife message boards to launch a systematic and indomitable gripe campaign to get Sensible Soccer onto this thing?!?!
. . . No one!?!?!
@impurekind I'll let you get on with that, then. Since neither of us isn't going to move an inch anyways, so I'll forego typing down my other non-agreeing musings...
@maceng Agree that 5 feet is still too short.
The thing that had me wondering - and Gamexplain are saying the same thing - is that the controller ports look like dummies. So where do they plug in - in the back? That makes the cords even shorter - and it would look all sorts of wrong.
Maybe it's just a 3D mock up. Strange though.
So, if they continue to do this every year, I hope they start making things like Gameboy Classic (on TV) as well. Though, I don't know how they'd do DS or 3DS Mini Classics.
I'm wondering if it'll be possible for three people to play Secret of Mana on this console. Is there going to be an adapter like the original SNES? I loved playing Secret of Mana with my brother and friend back in the day.
Worst kept secret?? Lol. Anyway the limited selection of 21 games is obviously by count even worse then the limited NES classic. That being said it is a solid Group of games with Star fox 2 as a bonus! Oh man Just Wait till the modders get a hold of this bad boy!! The entire SNES library will be added at the very least I'm sure. Perhaps though better availability will keep the eBay price controlled somewhat?
Awesome
Just seen this post on GoNintendo which clears up the controller port thing:
http://gonintendo.com/stories/283830-super-famicom-classic-edition-hitting-japan-oct-5th-game-lineup
The front fake port panel flips down to reveal what looks like ports for Wii style connectors. Looks fine.
Also - how cool is the Japanese box!!!!
@joey302 Snes Classic has less filler than the NES Classic, none of those boring, lame sports games or other filler. Yay, I always wanted to pay $60 dollars to play Tennis and Bowling! /s
@impurekind
@mikegamer That's the thing, several of the NES Classics were fodder. If third parties are fair game, as proven here with the SNES Mini, then where were classics like The Guardian Legend and Crystalis?
If only retailers would limit people to one each...
Too bad no NBA Jam,hopefully I can get one..
2 words, Tecmo Bowl, where is it???
Nope I'll pass. I already bought 2 systems this year. A NES classic modded with 90 games and a Switch. Don't need a third, though it looks cool. Maybe when someone mods it to include more games & I get tired of the other two.
@impurekind I'm with you man.Considering the price difference there should be the same amount of games as the Mini NES.In the US it's not that much more but it's 80 quid in the UK,a £30 difference.A controller is going to sell for £15 at most so taking that into account you're paying at least £15 extra for 9 less games. It's still a cracking list of games but there's so many glaring omissions. Pilotwings,Axelay,Actraiser,UN Squadron,R-Type 3,no sports games.Or how about work something out with EA and get Jungle Striker on there.I could go on.Plus they've included an extra controller but more than half the games are single player only.
Personally think the should have included 25 games including Chrono Trigger then they could have released the N64 classic with 20 games where as now the N64 mini will probably only have 15 games for $99.99.
Anyone got the link to the Nintendolife NES mini review?
Googling etc and still can't find it.
I'm really sad Nintendo Life isn't doing a poll asking what people think the going rate will be for these things on ebay.
Missed opportunity.
@XCWarrior Irrelevant.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Now let's hope they release a multi-tap for this as playing 3-Players co-op with Secret of Mana isn't possible without one.
@Scarhino89 Third party titles had reasons not to appeared on this plug and play. I'm pretty sure Nintendo asked for Chrono Trigger's inclusion but Square Enix says no since they already gave us Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy VI, and Secret of Mana.
@Darknyht I believe none of the Final Fight games were included cause 1) the first game on SNES sucks and 2) Final Fight 2 & 3 were not as popular. NBA Jam and SimCity cannot be included due to licensing issue. ActRaiser may had been included but since it's not a popular franchise Square Enix probably pass on that one. Final Fantasy II (FFIV) was probably not included as Nintendo felt that version was too easy, as you may or may not know the Final Fantasy IV that we got for SNES is the much waterdown, censored and edited easier version of the game unlike the one Japan, GBA, and PS1 had.
@wizzgamer They only include 20 this time cause they knew people will probably hack it and get the rest for next to nothing. I mean c'mon they knew from the get-go that this would happen, they even left a hidden message within the NES Classic Edition admitting this too.
I'm only buying it to play Star Fox 2. Hopefully the controllers work on the NES Mini too!
@XCWarrior You're really sad over the lack of a frivolous poll? Wow.
Ahhh jeez... I may very well have to import one of these since I've never played Earthbound and would like to play it in English. Not to mention half those other games that I loved growing up. And the others that I'm not terribly interested in, but hey, I'd still like to have them around.
@ThanosReXXX Good, good.
@impurekind
PS. Games aren't just a "hobby" to me personally; they're as significant/important in my life as anything else.
Just like if a doctor saved your life and then you became a doctor yourself in order to save other people's lives: It's no longer just some "job".
Some people might think their generic job is something of great importance to them; I consider games, which also happen to be my job, as an order of magnitude more important to my life than just doing some random job I'm basically forced to do simply to pay the bills.
Games profoundly affected and changed my life (and Nintendo was right at the heart of that)--such that they have guided and steered it, and almost every decision I have made in it, since I was a child aged 13 to the 40 year old adult I am now--and that's far, far more meaningful to me than a "hobby" is to the average Joe.
What you think of as a just "hobby", I live and breath like the air that gives me life, and it beats in my heart with the same fervor and passion as that of the greatest love of all time.
And, if you have not do so already, I only hope you one day find something you love just as much in your life too.
So, again "I guess it all comes down to what you consider important" - Me, a few posts back.
@retro_player_22 Sometimes it is not about the greatness of the game in retrospect, but how popular a game was at the time. Most never knew that Final Fantasy II was not the second Final Fantasy at the time, nor that it was simplified from the original. People mistakenly believe it is Final Fantasy IV Easy Type, but it is not.
Final Fight is probably the best known of the Beat'em Ups on SNES that is not a licensed product, but the lack of co-op probably doomed it. TMNT: Turtles in Time would be the best choice, but licensing would be a nightmare. The only other choice would be Knights of the Round, but it lacks the recognition.
Overall they did the best given the limitations licensing presents. I would have loved to see a few more on there that were great like Super Star Wars Series and Mario Paint. However, I am also relieved that we didn't get Vegas Stakes, Pilotwings, and other filler games.
@impurekind You forgot to tag me...
But yeah, yeah... It's all good. I believe we had somewhat of a similar discussion about that importance well over a year ago. I can certainly imagine that it feels different if you're in the industry yourself, since I have the same sentiment concerning my line of work. Even in my private life, it has its effects.
Regardless, even though I too have some really fond memories of many games, and many consoles/home computers, I still cannot place them on the same level of importance as actual life threatening or human rights infringing events, so I guess we'll have to file that under "agree to disagree".
Wouldn't want to bother you any further with needlessly debating that, since I figure we'll more than likely both stick to our own point of view anyway, so there's no middle ground to be reached or anything to be gained.
So, in closing, that leaves me with nothing other than to say that I do respect your opinion, long as you don't try to change or question the validity of mine, even if you think that I'm seeing things wrong...
@samuelvictor Noooo... don't do it, not the scalpers!
@ThanosReXXX Yeah, and I don't disagree with your viewpoint on the importance of the other stuff. I just don't appreciate you labeling videogames as "petty matters like a hobby" in order to make my complaints about Nintendo's business decisions or whatever seem trivial and ultimately a worthless/meaningless annoyance simply because that's how you personally see it. You don't get to determine that, certainly not for me.
What I'm saying is that however you see videogames, it is not an objective universal truth about videogames, so don't casually apply it like that to/with me specifically--find someone else to lump that stuff onto. Else, I may feel inclined to do the same about anything you consider important in this life.
Because I'll stand here and fight as fervently in defense of the value and importance of videogames in the grand scheme of things--and entertainment in general for that matter (the idea of basic "play" is as important to any human being's health and happiness as any other thing outside of obvious life essentials like food, water, shelter, love)--as you will for anything else in this existence. And if that means complaining about Nintendo because I expect more of it then so be it--and nothing anyone says is going to stop me doing so.
That's all really.
PS. I managed to get in a pre-order for a SNES Classic Mini--yay!
@impurekind What I said was never directed at your personal sentiments, it's just how I see it in the general sense, because it's a hobby. And it's true that even hobby's can be life altering or perhaps even life saving for some people, but those are the exception, not the rule. It's a bit like how people can hurt and even kill each other over a game of football: it's insane to me, since I also like the game, and I also feel happy or sad when my team wins or loses, but I'm not about to kick someone else's face in, simply because he's from the opposing team, and that loss is all but forgotten after a good night's sleep...
Besides, I considered you to be more than smart enough to have understood that, otherwise I would have had to make disclaimers for each and every variation that might apply, so I'm a bit surprised at this reaction, to be honest.
But I've got a broad back, so no offense taken either way...
@impurekind And congrats on the pre-order. There isn't even any pre-order up here on the other side of the Canal, so I have to wait for my game shop's newsletter that tells me when they are starting to take pre-orders before I can try to nail one.
Man, no Pilotwings or any sports titles at all means I'm skipping this for sure. Looks awesome for fans of these games though!
@ThanosReXXX I wasn't particularly offended or upset or anything like that (so you don't have to tiptoe on egg shells); I just don't see videogames, or any form of "play", as ultimately a meaningless hobby.
"Play", in whichever form you choose to do it, is literally an essential part of a healthy and balanced life (particularly when growing up)--that's been scientifically/medically proven--I simply treat it as such (and maybe I'm lucky to have had life experiences through videogames that have taught me why playing is so important and valuable to the human experience and all our health and happiness).
@ThanosReXXX Yeah, it went like that [clicks fingers]. I was more than lucky to get one before they all sold out.
@samuelvictor Pre-orders haven't even started over here, so even if I wanted to (and boy, do I ever), I can't make one yet.
And yeah, this time around, the value for money might indeed be bigger. And I'll add to that point of view with something that most people might have overlooked: in order to perfectly emulate both Star Fox games, some kind of Super FX-chip emulation must have been added, or maybe they might have even added an actual chip on the PCB, who knows?
Fact is that, to this very day, those Super FX chip games are still very hard to emulate perfectly, so I am mighty curious as to how the official versions are going to perform.
Either way, here's hoping that when pre-orders finally start over here, that I'll be able to nab one before the rabbit goes back into the hat once again...
@HalBailman @EVIL-C Both of you need to learn to when you see there is a joke.
Me ending with "sad," a common phrase from Mr. Donald Drumpf, should have been a give away.
But come on, you know these are going to be the #1 selling item on ebay for the 6 months after initial release, and an item only seen for about 60 seconds in 1 retail store per city once a month and only after a Nintendo fans sacrifice via a fire ritual at least 3 copies of the original Earthbound for the SNES to the almight god Iwata.
Please don't be censored, please don't be censored...
@Nico07 got confirmation from two Amazon UK reps, confirmed US shipping just fine.
Star Fox 2?!
@Al_Godoy
Completely agree man, I still enjoy Super Nintendo games to this day, the 16-bit color graphics have aged very well to this day.
@XCWarrior No it's not. Not everyone is obsessed with Trump, and without an emoticon or even an exclamation mark, no sarcasm or frivolity was detected in your comment. It seemed very serious. Remember, no one can read minds or detect tone in text. Revise your style next time to avoid such confusion. Otherwise I'll be sad!
@HalBailman Fine. But when NintendoLife.com has to shut down as a website on July 1 because they didn't get enough clicks in June and it was ONLY because they forgot to do a poll to see how much a SNES Mini will go for on ebay, don't come crying to me!
@Meaty-cheeky I wish more Indies would use 16-bit graphics. I'd buy a lot, but I'd buy more of them in that style.
@XCWarrior I won't.
Chrono Trigger 😢
Whyyyyyyy
@invictus4000 Riots worse than......shudder......political riots..........over an emulation box..........
