Arguably one of the more fantastical and hilarious accessories for the GameCube was the ASCII Keyboard Controller, which quite simply sandwiched a keyboard between two halves of the console's standard gamepad.
Now Cyber Gadget is bringing this questionable but wonderful design to the Nintendo Switch with its USB keyboard of no particular title. You can slide your Joy-Con controllers onto the side allowing you quick access to both game controls and keyboard with supreme clunky convenience.
It's being released exclusively in Japan for the moment with a launch date of the 30th September 2017. Whether or not it makes it to western shores is yet to be seen.
Oh, and for clarity, this is what the GameCube one looked like in case its glory has passed you by.

Now bring WoW to the switch.
I mean, more power to people who will use this. I may too but... Wow. That just looks awkward.
That said, if this let's us have Wow, guild wars or FF14 on Switch than bring it on! Mmo games in he real would be nice.
Why stop there? Could bring over some Mobas too.
Looks fun! ...if a little flimsy.
Make a compatible fight stick attachment.
I missed out on that rather cool GC controller, but as this one looks much intuitive, it might be a worthy buy. Now, where's that Switch Internet browser?
now just get a mouse to work lol
Still won't be enough to bring over those 3rd party shooters like Overwatch.
I still have my GameCube was the ASCII Keyboard Controller. It was wonderful for playing Phantasy Star Online back in the day!
I'm totally willing to import one of these!
Looks ridiculous. I want one.
@Grumblevolcano Motion controls would work really well though, I've personally used a Steam Controller with it on PC and could aim very well.
Phantasy Star Online 2!!! Do it!
@Braok I don't see Overwatch coming to Switch unless there's crossplay and Blizzard have already said crossplay isn't happening between XB1 and PC because of no mouse + keyboard option on XB1.
I'd use that
Why are they always USB keyboards? I would consider a witless one.
Well Square Enix was making some talk on maybe bringing FFXIV over to the Switch.
This would be great.
I love it! Makes me want to see Typing of the Dead on the Switch. And yes, I do have that game & keyboard for the Dreamcast. Good memories
CANYONEROOOOOOOOO
the gamecube one... glorious
HUH ?!
Oh, Wow !
Keyboard on the go ?!
This will be a great peripheral to have when Rainway launches. Also great for writing on signs in Minecraft.
Now if only we had an internet browser.....
@Aozz101x You have Xenoblade if you want to play endure MMO combat that bad.
Anyway... what is this even for? It's quite similar to the Gamecube version oddly enough.
Wouldnt keyboards and mouses be connectable to Switch via usb, without sliding on the joy cons (if Nintendo allows this)? Still, would look neat with the neon yellow joycons I received today
@Grumblevolcano There's no cross-play between any version of Overwatch at the moment though (iirc), so why couldn't it come to Switch without cross-play?
Something like this would be pretty neat for online Animal Crossing sessions. There's an idea for a bundle.
@Dogorilla For the same reason other 3rd parties avoid Switch, a low install base.
Why not the size of a BlackBerry keyboard and just put it in the middel. Something like the size of a regular joy-con grip.....
It looks pretty fantastic. I love how the railing is flush with the keyboard edge. But I can't imagine playing with hands that far apart. (Then again, I did get used to the Switch's width...)
65 tons of american pride
The federal highway commission has ruled the Canyonaro unsafe for highway or city driving.
@YouSeemFRAZZLED It was for chatting in the Phantasy Star Online games.
Awesome. Now please bring this and Dragon Quest X to the west.
this would b handy for monster hunter if ur not using a headset and discord :
Typing of the Dead! DO IT, SEGA!!
I suppose old plasticky video game peripherals, like the ASCII keyboard, would look hilarious to a millennial like Alex. I own one and felt it was perfectly suitable for its task; it was perfect PSO on the Cube.
@Grumblevolcano Again, gyro controls are about as effective as a mouse. Keyboard doesn't matter unless you're playing something like Quake where you have to switch through a dozen weapons quickly and accurately. I was able to use a Steam Controller in low Masters rank in competitive with great success (Widowmaker and McCree, mainly). If you aren't a starving stick of a human who desperately needs protein then it's COMPLETELY competitively viable. Splatoon proves it
Kinda wonder why no one has done a smaller, Joy-Con Grip version of this.
well looks cool but apart from taking up extra space what can you use it for at moment
???
@Braok I have no doubts (I play on XB1 so I just a standard XB1 controller) but Blizzard did say crossplay won't happen at all with PC unless there's mouse + keyboard support on consoles.
@Grumblevolcano blizz is a bunch of idiots
Incredible.
....Ummmmm....o_0
This has modern day uses, and looks quite nice.
I'm serious. Watch me not like voice chat but type my ass off in monster Hunter. If splatoon had it I'd type there too.
I like it:)
This would be better for internet and social media features than actual games. Keyboards are great for typing but not so great for games and you probably wouldn't be using it much for a hybrid gaming console.
I wish AAA developers and publishers were as excited about making games for this system as 3rd party accessory companies.
Yeah PSO2 wpuld be awesome with this on Switch. 😲
@Braok It makes perfect sense that they would want to keep PC separate from console players.
Maybe they are bringing Dragon Quest x to Japan and that's why the keyboard.
As long as it is light weight AND Dragon Quest X comes to the West, sure I'll bite.
Typing of the Dead confirmed!!
That's... Actually rather clever.
Now Cyber Gadget is bringing this questionable but wonderful design to the Nintendo Switch with its USB keyboard of no particular title.
Questionable? It was the only way to play PSO et al on GC w/o constant irritation!
Both are a failure. Not because of their supreme clunkiness or questionable looks, but because they both lack a separate numeric keypad.
i may end up buying this.....but it is not needed. hopefully Nintendo will add USB mouse and keyboard support to the Nintendo Switch just as they did to the Wii U.
@Aozz101x
I don't think Nintendo will bring WoW support to the switch, but if they do it might make the switch more desirable. however, i think people would prefer support for android apps on the switch over WoW....
for now, lets just hope that they bring Hulu, Amazon, Netflix, YouTube, and Vudu support to the switch. and maybe a web browser that supports flash video as well...
Once again it's that dual personality coming from Nintendo (lol) I have no idea why but I want one.. There seems to be so much potential for the Switch just as there was for the Wii U it just was never fully realized, and here we go again... Seems just about every few days we hear of a few ok games, some possible good games, 1-2 great games and here comes the boatload of Phone games, re-makes and shovelware that Nintendo PROMISED us would never make its way through this new and improved "tedious" review process.. Well we all now see how that's working out so far..
That looks incredible. I need that! And Phantasy Star Online
How awesome, I want that keyboard!
This would be perfect for online Monster Hunt......crap.
@stevenw45 I believe you already can plug in any ol' USB Keyboard into the Switch.
@Angelic_Lapras_King
well, i never tried. i might try later if Nintendo says they will start including USB mouse support. using theme would be helpful in the eShop as well as video player apps if they are ever included in the switch.
"We love the switch. My 3 year old plays minecraft on it all the time, and it's really great, I'm still playing Zelda. But we think that while the joycon keyboard could play WoW, the backspace key has way to much wiggle, and it just wouldn't be the right place fir the game. "
Ah, yes. The Phantasy Star Online Ep. 1&2 Whale Keyboard Controller Combo. The only way to play the game for real. This Joycon Whale is not so elegant, but it will do.
@Bolt_Strike "Keyboards are great for typing but not so great for games..."
I beg to differ for many PC games. Console controllers have their place, but they'll never be optimal for certain genres and titles compared to keyboard + mouse.
This is cool as a keyboard but if you were to use the Joycons on either side your arms will probably ache. That's what I thought of the GameCube keyboard. :x I remember you could use a usb keyboard on the Wii. Though I only ever used it in Animal Crossing City Folk.
Too bad an actual Game Cube with the keyboard is easier to find than a Switch
Now games need to let you control them with the keyboard, not just type.
@PlywoodStick I mean, the 50some buttons are pretty extraneous, you'll only ever be using what, 10 of them? Doesn't really offer anything necessary for gaming.
This looks great for Dragon Quest X
@Kalmaro Well.. they could also bring an own MOBA, imagine a Pokémon MOBA or something like the Smash Universe.
@Roam85 If by that you mean that they should do a 2, they already did 5 years ago. If by that you mean they should bring the existing game to Switch, I can only +1 your comment .
@Lenzo Unexplained fires are a matter for the courts!
@Aozz101x need a mouse too for that
@Zorrby I'd play it.
@Kafei2006 oh I want that guy ported to switch and out west finally.
Especially if I got to use this monstrosity.
Wow, putting a screen on a standard twin-stick controller caused the gaming world to go into convulsions of absolute hysteria and foaming hate...
If this were an official Nintendo product, some might injure themselves from all the knee-jerking and pearl clutching.
actually looks really cool imo
@Bolt_Strike Depends on the genre. For a lot of games, you're right. However, for FPS, MMO's, RTS, etc. it's not unusual to use 20 or more keys with the keyboard hand, including 3 or 4 keys for movement. And that's not counting typing text. A lot of WRPG's and TPS's are also best played with keyboard/mouse. But yeah, the ergonomics of a keyboard/controller combo are awkward, lol. There are some recent exceptions to this, like Diablo 3 on consoles, but that's because the game design was massively dumbed down from Diablo 2. Consolitis hits PC games hard.
If they released Phantasy Star Online for the switch, I would totally buy this crazy keyboard!
That GameCube keyboard looks like an abomination. What games even supported it?
@Kayfios
PSO.
still dont understand the use, just have a usb keyboard on the table/lap/floor and play comfortable ?? doubt anyone is using text on the go and would dare leave the house with that. Literally no point to this product. Fans saying its nice just sums it all up.
you could even play splits joycons and type on a keyboard, this literally does not add anything other than rails on a keyboard!!!
@Aozz101x Really? That's it? Not even Animal Crossing?
@Kayfios i think so. i heard it supports PSO, but i couldnt find anything else it supports.
@stevenw45 @Haru17
i was joking .
The cube one is beautiful
All I wanted was a traditional controller...
It just reminds me of when Atari released the Jaguar.
All the desktop PC keyboard should comes with controllers at both sides like that.
Why youn need a keyboard for the switch ??
Monster Hunter ??
FF XIV ?!?!
ANYNONE !?
@Aozz101x
i know, i just decided to go along with it out of boredom. (the release date of the new super Mario game is too far away.) besides, just imagine someone playing a nice game of Microsoft Solitaire on their nice new Nintendo Switch. or better yet, being able to request an uber...lol
Good memory on the Canyonero!
Typing games, phantasy star, dragon quest 10, minecraft, the list goes on... let's make it happen Nintendo
This is awesome clap clap, clap clap clap
