Re: Nintendo Seeks Improvement at E3 2016, Though Miyamoto Defends Near-Term Rather Than "Dream-Like Demonstrations"

Sean_Aaron

They really should stop talking about it; they shouldn't have apologised in the first place. Showing actual gameplay footage and demos (unlike Microsoft who just showed a bunch of trailers that rarely indicated what kind of game was being trailered because there was no game footage at all) is very positive; they could have had more sizzle by showing more about what we know is upcoming. I totally get holding things back; historically Nintendo has saved big surprises for Directs unrelated to E3, but clearly they could have done a little bit more.

Re: Nintendo Is "Exploring" The Idea Of Early Access Games On Its Consoles

Sean_Aaron

No, I will never buy a demo or alpha software to help fund completion. Well, never say never, but it's hard to imagine something so cool that it would appeal to me and yet not already be funded. If you want to fund a project get some financial backing, don't try to sell your demo at full price and promise a finished game "someday."

Re: Tablets Stole The Wii U's Thunder, Laments Shigeru Miyamoto

Sean_Aaron

I'm not going to make any absolute statements in the face of the information vacuum on the NX, but I will say if it's a standalone console which isn't backwards compatible with software and hardware (including stuff I downloaded with my NNID and Wii disc games) from the previous couple of generations, it's very unlikely I'll be taking the plunge and likely be done with consoles unless Apple does something in that sphere.

If it's a handheld that can connect to the TV that might be interesting, but I have an iPad I game on and honestly I can't see carrying that (which I mainly read books on and surf the web, read email) and another device. Without compelling software I have no reason to upgrade and a new Mario Kart or Metroid game will not make a sale. The nice thing about skipping another generation or even all future consoles is that I can still play and enjoy my Wii U.

Re: Parent Trap: Woolly Yoshi amiibo Finally Turn Toys To Life Figures Into Actual Toys

Sean_Aaron

I have to say I'm surprised there isn't some articulation in the Smash Bros. amiibos. If you look at Donkey Kong, for example, the arms are clearly separate pieces that are glued in, making me wonder how much more would have been involved in having an articulated joint to let the owner move the arm position or have a head that rotates? It's minor and the figures are great regardless, but that would make them a bit more fun for kids who are arguably the main target market (making shortages all the more painful for parents).

Re: Feature: Five Key Moments from Nintendo's E3

Sean_Aaron

@Spectra_Twilight Yeah I don't get it. I'm pretty sure Nintendo stepped back from E3 years ago; Nintendo Direct is where I expect big reveals - NOT E3. But I guess people have short memories. And getting outraged because a wee trailer isn't exactly what you hoped from a new franchise entry...what is that?

Re: Review: Vector Assault (Wii U eShop)

Sean_Aaron

I like Geometry Wars and it's a shame Activision seems to have abandoned the iOS version years ago. I'd happily buy a carbon copy of it, but this only seems to walk to the walk: controlling a pushchair and outrunning crippled golf carts doesn't quite grab the feel of Geometry Wars. Next!

Re: Splatoon Producer Inks Out Reasons For Lack Of Voice Chat And Staggered Content Roll-Out

Sean_Aaron

It's not just language, but the people trying to run the show and tell others what to do. This is a game with fairly short rounds, so I honestly can't see the benefit and I'm sure the game's performance is better for leaving it out as well. People will eventually get the strategy and do what needs doing from looking at the map or their team will suffer - don't need chat for that.

Chatting with people (friends) in the lobby would be nice, I agree; especially if you want to go on to choose complimentary loadout and I wouldn't put it past them to include it in a future release.

Re: Video: We Check Out The Squid amiibo Challenges

Sean_Aaron

I got the boy and girl ones, but the squid not being sold separately does annoy a bit as I expect it will not be cheap to buy on its own. By way of confirmation I've checked Amazon and there are Japan-based marketplace sellers (the one territory where this figure is sold on its own) selling for around £25 with postage. Tempted...

Re: Poll: Early Impressions on Splatoon and That All-Important Online Multiplayer

Sean_Aaron

Haven't wanted to play single-player yet. I'm up to level three, so just a handful of online matches, but the only issue I've seen so far is sometimes a delay in getting into a game; with an error kicking me back to the mode select at the tower once. When the game is going it's smooth as silk: zero issues and I'm on wi-fi with a fast connection both in my wlan and to my flat.

I chose the "needs beefing up" option, but I think it's pretty obvious they're drip feeding the environments and waiting mini-games (a brilliant way to wait for a game to start) to keep things "fresh." Feels great and a far cry from online gaming on the Wii.

Re: Talking Point: Retro Gamers Beware, PAC-MAN 256 Could be a Template for Nintendo's Smart Device Future

Sean_Aaron

I rather doubt that the produce of DeNA and Nintendo will be targeting existing Nintendo fans so I'm not too fussed about it myself. My daughter likes Crossy Road and I have to say I don't see the point of an endless version of Frogger. One of the things I liked about Frogger was that sense of accomplishment at beating a hard level. Getting a bit further in Jetpack Joyride and unlocking yet another costume just made me realise how much time I was wasting on a game with no real feeling of accomplishment behind it.

Re: Editorial: The eShop's Pricing Dilemma is the Fault of Many, But Damages Creativity and Risk Taking

Sean_Aaron

@Darknyht Sorry I don't get your rule of thumb there - how much is a cinema ticket in America now? $10-15 for a single experience of 90-120min in length? Are you seriously telling me that an interactive experience that is often far longer simply because you can revisit it with no additional outlay is less valuable? Even the DVD or digital film download costs more than what you're suggesting.

Now we get to the crux of it: what determines the value of the media in question and how is the price set. I agree with RCMADIAX: unless you're getting some special treatment from a platform-holder, being platform-exclusive is a risk that might not be worthwhile, given we seem to be into a culture of games not only being as disposable as Hollywood movies, but actually perceived as being less valuable (obviously it's possible to have an idea that only works well with Nintendo's controllers, but that's still a risk).

Here's a radical idea that might not work, but the only reason I go to the cinema as much as I do is a large cinema chain in the UK offers unlimited attendance and a small discount on concessions in exchange for a monthly membership fee that's equivalent to two tickets in price. If indies were to form a collective, guild, union, whatever and go to platform-holders with a similar idea in exchange for a negotiated cut could that satisfy people?

Obviously the content has to be good enough to have a strong negotiating position, so you'd need members with proven quality in the ranks, but I think pushing this kind of revenue-sharing model might end up being a better way than having multiple platforms that are effectively the same with devs on their own just chucking their stuff out there and crossing their fingers. The questions whether enough of them would risk that strategy to make it a viable option.

Re: Editorial: The eShop's Pricing Dilemma is the Fault of Many, But Damages Creativity and Risk Taking

Good article, I think that people don't really consider the capital outlay required to produce some of these games, but the sales in order to get eyeballs does a disservice. I tend to buy what appeals during the first month because I know that's key. Otherwise it probably will take a sale to get my attention and even then, the game has to have something going on for me to care; frankly most don't.

I've bought a lot of games for my Wii U so I don't regard myself as part of the problem - hell I even buy downloads exclusively just because of convenience and because getting more money to the publisher seems okay to me. Over saturation of the market with low-quality goods may be the real issue here...seems like the 80s all over again!
