Now that's the kind of thing I like to see in the eShop as opposed to retro-styled action/puzzle platformers. And very nice touch having someone in costume with a Gamepad on the sofa - lets us know this isn't just a port to the Wii U as an afterthought, cheers!
Cave Story on Wii U would be great, but the Zelda-alike and Metroid-alike retro-flavour games I'm not getting the appeal of. I can just play one of several Metroid or Zelda games if I want to play a game that's like Metroid or Zelda.
They really should stop talking about it; they shouldn't have apologised in the first place. Showing actual gameplay footage and demos (unlike Microsoft who just showed a bunch of trailers that rarely indicated what kind of game was being trailered because there was no game footage at all) is very positive; they could have had more sizzle by showing more about what we know is upcoming. I totally get holding things back; historically Nintendo has saved big surprises for Directs unrelated to E3, but clearly they could have done a little bit more.
No, I will never buy a demo or alpha software to help fund completion. Well, never say never, but it's hard to imagine something so cool that it would appeal to me and yet not already be funded. If you want to fund a project get some financial backing, don't try to sell your demo at full price and promise a finished game "someday."
Never played it, but I have the original, SNES outing, Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess so it seems like a good idea. I do hope the Wii games will turn up as downloads as well eventually.
I don't accept those explanations guys, there's plenty of cheap crappy figures with articulated limbs out there; likely it just means Nintendo pockets more of the money from the sale price.
I'm not going to make any absolute statements in the face of the information vacuum on the NX, but I will say if it's a standalone console which isn't backwards compatible with software and hardware (including stuff I downloaded with my NNID and Wii disc games) from the previous couple of generations, it's very unlikely I'll be taking the plunge and likely be done with consoles unless Apple does something in that sphere.
If it's a handheld that can connect to the TV that might be interesting, but I have an iPad I game on and honestly I can't see carrying that (which I mainly read books on and surf the web, read email) and another device. Without compelling software I have no reason to upgrade and a new Mario Kart or Metroid game will not make a sale. The nice thing about skipping another generation or even all future consoles is that I can still play and enjoy my Wii U.
I have to say I'm surprised there isn't some articulation in the Smash Bros. amiibos. If you look at Donkey Kong, for example, the arms are clearly separate pieces that are glued in, making me wonder how much more would have been involved in having an articulated joint to let the owner move the arm position or have a head that rotates? It's minor and the figures are great regardless, but that would make them a bit more fun for kids who are arguably the main target market (making shortages all the more painful for parents).
I have paid double for one figure from Japan and that's it. The stock shortages mean my partner's kids miss out which sucks; I've been lucky to get pre-orders in at the online Nintendo store for figures I want.
As to the appeal? They're just nice figures; in-game functionality is kind of a bonus for me.
@Spectra_Twilight Yeah I don't get it. I'm pretty sure Nintendo stepped back from E3 years ago; Nintendo Direct is where I expect big reveals - NOT E3. But I guess people have short memories. And getting outraged because a wee trailer isn't exactly what you hoped from a new franchise entry...what is that?
I like Geometry Wars and it's a shame Activision seems to have abandoned the iOS version years ago. I'd happily buy a carbon copy of it, but this only seems to walk to the walk: controlling a pushchair and outrunning crippled golf carts doesn't quite grab the feel of Geometry Wars. Next!
@manu0 That's a useful distinction, but only if it's replicated to the Home Menu screen - what if the button bar was just a set of shortcuts for things you use the most and the Home Menu remained as it was?
Well they made a lot of money off Little Infero being a launch title. I think nearly everyone with a Wii U at launch must have bought that title. Hopefully they should regard the Wii U as a safe bet, even if the eShop is more crowded now than it was back then.
It's not just language, but the people trying to run the show and tell others what to do. This is a game with fairly short rounds, so I honestly can't see the benefit and I'm sure the game's performance is better for leaving it out as well. People will eventually get the strategy and do what needs doing from looking at the map or their team will suffer - don't need chat for that.
Chatting with people (friends) in the lobby would be nice, I agree; especially if you want to go on to choose complimentary loadout and I wouldn't put it past them to include it in a future release.
I got the boy and girl ones, but the squid not being sold separately does annoy a bit as I expect it will not be cheap to buy on its own. By way of confirmation I've checked Amazon and there are Japan-based marketplace sellers (the one territory where this figure is sold on its own) selling for around £25 with postage. Tempted...
I've had drop-outs happen mid-game for the first time yesterday evening, so here's hoping they beef up their servers. Daughter is enjoying it and doing quite well, often ranking second in her team scores.
Looks like pretty standard fare. I think I'd get this if it came to Europe. I'm not a big fan of Axelay - I think if that had a more conventional top-down or side-on perspective I'd enjoy it more.
I thought the video was quite funny with the public schoolboy act, but as to the reasons for getting kicked from a match they seemed legit. I can't say I've felt a desire to play Smash online just yet.
Haven't wanted to play single-player yet. I'm up to level three, so just a handful of online matches, but the only issue I've seen so far is sometimes a delay in getting into a game; with an error kicking me back to the mode select at the tower once. When the game is going it's smooth as silk: zero issues and I'm on wi-fi with a fast connection both in my wlan and to my flat.
I chose the "needs beefing up" option, but I think it's pretty obvious they're drip feeding the environments and waiting mini-games (a brilliant way to wait for a game to start) to keep things "fresh." Feels great and a far cry from online gaming on the Wii.
Um, why not just have Remote+Nunchuk controls available full-stop? It's not like you couldn't have the Gamepad in a stand to use the map jump function in single-player and there's not too many buttons for the two part scheme. Even in the dojo the Gamepad player could use the built-in sensor bar and a stand...
I think they're mainly publishing on Wii U. I have Lone Survivor which was engaging for a time, but I think is a bit too long (though I may be near the end?), Thomas Was Alone, which I've not had a chance to play yet, and Ultratron which is good fun. They seem to be bringing stuff that people want. How about Papers, Please?
Awesome, has to be better than the Mac app which requires me to use a browser to find programmes before I can download them and then view them with iPlayer.
I'm sure there was an article about this a month or two ago because I remember that trailer. It's pretty and it's a shooter - could be fun. So are the giant critters working with the people in the space ships? What's going on there?
There is nothing invalid about a game you play for five minutes which advertises itself as such. Hell you want everything to be crap like Black Ops? THAT kind of rubbish clogging the shelves is the death of the industry right there.
Yeah I thought Blok Drop U was worthwhile. Don't Crash is obviously a version of the classic Atari 2600 game Dodge 'Em, which a Japanese dev did a version of for DSiWare. Assuming complexity ramps up beyond the simple two-lane track seen above that could be interesting as I enjoyed the other two.
Like others, this was my last WiiWare purchase. Hopefully on the back of this report he'll consider a Wii U version - hopefully less effort (unless he doesn't have the devkit, but then I don't know if the outlay for that is too significant?) and better return than WiiWare.
I'm very hopeful. Ninja Gaiden 3 was weakest in the story department with a grossly uneven tone, but that comment about treaties and such gives me hope.
I rather doubt that the produce of DeNA and Nintendo will be targeting existing Nintendo fans so I'm not too fussed about it myself. My daughter likes Crossy Road and I have to say I don't see the point of an endless version of Frogger. One of the things I liked about Frogger was that sense of accomplishment at beating a hard level. Getting a bit further in Jetpack Joyride and unlocking yet another costume just made me realise how much time I was wasting on a game with no real feeling of accomplishment behind it.
@Scary_Old_Lady I can't remember to be honest. I think it asked if you were in touch with your inner squid and showed some gameplay and mentioned release. It was like 15-seconds.

Yeah Metro Cross is great (can't remember if I have that on my Japanese Wii or not) and this looks sort of similar.

Judge Dredd pinball? I'm there! I'll be away this weekend as it happens, but I expect I'll be able to make the time to visit soon!

Re: Editorial: The eShop's Pricing Dilemma is the Fault of Many, But Damages Creativity and Risk Taking
@Darknyht Sorry I don't get your rule of thumb there - how much is a cinema ticket in America now? $10-15 for a single experience of 90-120min in length? Are you seriously telling me that an interactive experience that is often far longer simply because you can revisit it with no additional outlay is less valuable? Even the DVD or digital film download costs more than what you're suggesting.
Now we get to the crux of it: what determines the value of the media in question and how is the price set. I agree with RCMADIAX: unless you're getting some special treatment from a platform-holder, being platform-exclusive is a risk that might not be worthwhile, given we seem to be into a culture of games not only being as disposable as Hollywood movies, but actually perceived as being less valuable (obviously it's possible to have an idea that only works well with Nintendo's controllers, but that's still a risk).
Here's a radical idea that might not work, but the only reason I go to the cinema as much as I do is a large cinema chain in the UK offers unlimited attendance and a small discount on concessions in exchange for a monthly membership fee that's equivalent to two tickets in price. If indies were to form a collective, guild, union, whatever and go to platform-holders with a similar idea in exchange for a negotiated cut could that satisfy people?
Obviously the content has to be good enough to have a strong negotiating position, so you'd need members with proven quality in the ranks, but I think pushing this kind of revenue-sharing model might end up being a better way than having multiple platforms that are effectively the same with devs on their own just chucking their stuff out there and crossing their fingers. The questions whether enough of them would risk that strategy to make it a viable option.
