Dual stick might as well be tank, it's just as lame. The fact that the controls have aim assist and the rest of that crap just to make it work is evidence of that. That people accept it is pathetic.
I expect the Wii U to get more Wii software releases in the eShop to fill some gaps. Be nice to think that Fire Emblem would make a showing; maybe the Pikmin New Play Control games, but it may just end up being Skyward Sword.
I've got such a backlog on Wii U that I'm fine if that's the end of the trip for the system. I still enjoy it and I'm looking forward to The Pinball Arcade finally gracing it. Even if Nintendo has no more big sellers there's still going to be little third party games coming to it for another year.
This would seem to underline further the idea that Nintendo isn't going to make a machine to try to take share from Sony or Microsift, but rely upon existing core supporters and new growth from younger players. Use the mobile apps to appeal to the kids and then try to draw them to NX?
In any event people who expected Nintendo to make another SNES will be disappointed.
They both seem a natural fit for touch controls. Fire Emblem could be a full game, but might also be a pick-up-and play title that's just a collection of individual battles. I'll check 'em both out if they're free-to-play or have demos.
@VanillaLake It's free and that's a good thing. It's okay, but there's not a lot going on: go through a small, linear dungeon killing zombies and then carry the treasure back with you. Even if you had speech I can't see what the point would be - not like there's a lot of strategy...
New Excite game would be great. Despite breaking down and spending like £50+ to get the Japanese version of Excite Bots for my Japanese Wii, I'd still happily buy it as a download on Wii U. Let's have some love for Europe Nintendo! I did email the UK customer service numerous times about bringing it to Europe, most recently after Wii games started appearing for download in the eShop. I suggest my fellow Euros do the same!
I'd ask for this on Wii U as more DLC for Mario Kart 8 seems like a no-brainer, but I suspect any new efforts are going to go to the new console. I think we'll have to content ourselves with eShop releases and Virtual Console on Wii U. That's fine with me; especially if we get a lot more Wii releases and maybe one or two more HD GameCube remakes.
How will the discount for Star Fox work? I mean, I can't very well get a discount on Zero for owning Guard without buying Guard first and I can't get the discount on Guard without buying Zero first, right?
@polarbear Same here. I'm not collecting consoles (though I do have three) so unless the NX can replace my Wii U - either by running my existing Wii/Wii U library or allowing me to re-purchase the majority of the software ports to the system at a substantial discount - I'm not interested. I do wish the Wii U gamepad already used wifi as the Bluetooth implementation feels too restrictive given I need to be in the same room.
I rather doubt this guitar would sound very good - I mean it's a plastic box. A sound comparison of the guitar itself and the NES guitar would have been good. It is a pretty cool project though; especially if she incorporates the amp so you guys should keep an eye out for a follow-up.
I would add that whilst it's nice that Texas requires competency to get a hunting license, that doesn't mean much if that's not a requirement to own a firearm as I rather doubt the majority of gun owners are hunters.
Another anecdote from a gun-owning friend who I used to rent a room from. One night he hears a noise outside and ends up spending much of the wee hours sitting in his underwear with a loaded Glock on his kitchen table wondering if he's going to have to confront a burglar. I said "it was probably a cat or a raccoon and if you didn't have that gun you would have looked outside and then gone back to bed." The gun and the possibilities that go with it - armed conflict create more fear than they dispel. If someone is willing to break into your house when you're there, they probably won't be scared off because you have a gun in your hand; especially if they have one themselves.
@TheRealThanos I would go further and say that any weapon brought into a potential conflict automatically escalates things and needs to be carefully considered.
A few years ago I let a drunk into the building close who claimed to have friends in the upstairs flat. This was at New Years after midnight and there were kids who had been put to bed in my place. The first time I came out to tell him to be quiet after his banging on the door and shouting I brought a crowbar with me, but kept it out of sight. The second time, I reconsidered - was it necessary to threaten force on this kid? Was I willing to bash his brains in over a noise complaint? I left it behind and threatened to call the cops if he didn't leave, which he did. I got some adrenaline out of it and that was all. Now imagine I had been brandishing a gun in that situation...
@MC808 I'm an American born and bred, however I'm able to recognise the problems of the country of my birth. I know very well that all of America isn't of one mind; that's why there's still millions of homeless people on the streets, a broken welfare system, a medical system that's only been able to take baby steps in the right direction and levels of gun violence you wouldn't see anywhere not experiencing open warfare. What can I say, the truth hurts. If people stop being polarised and look beyond their own front garden maybe they can work together to fix some of these problems, but given how well Donald Trump is doing with his even more polarising political statements than other right-wing politicians of the recent past I won't hold out any hope for that.
You're also taking some responses out of context. My comment about Americans being unable to engage in polite discourse was in response to the chorus calling for comments to be locked here, apparently because video game fans cannot discuss political issues when they arise, which you are also echoing with your expression of disbelief this conversation is even taking place. I don't believe that's the case, unless you're going to tell me that you and a majority of the people posting here are children.
I think the question is more about why Americans are in love with them rather than others "being afraid." This love affair extending to more extreme laws to demonstrate it: publicly walking around with assault rifles and near universal concealed weapons permits; just looks insane, really.
I can see the difference between controlling a character in a video game and real life. No soap box required for thinking it's nuts to live in a society awash with guns and think that's a good thing.
I can't see how the comments section could be any different. Someone has modified a firearm to look like a child's toy - how could that not polarise people? Though I would expect the number of people who think it's cool to be very small indeed.
What's next, modding a Mac-10 to look like a Super Soaker or a Nerf gun? I'd be surrpised if some enterprising American hadn't already commissioned such a thing,
@Wolfgabe "I keep hearing" - where the NRA? Even the briefest attempt at research would refute that claim as shaneoh has done, but here's another from a fairly respected debunking source:
Ultimately whether or not you want guns in society has little to do with statistics relating to crime. I for one enjoy living in a country (Scotland) where the police are not only unarmed, but want to keep it that way.
Why you would want to live in a society where people are walking around with concealed firearms and laws that encourage them to use them in situations where they aren't required ("stand your ground") is beyond me, but don't try to tell people they're worse off without firearms available for general sale in their countries.
I think it's grotesque and I cannot imagine Nintendo would happy about this at all, bespoke job for a single customer or not. A letter from their attorneys would seem to be the way to send a message this stuff isn't on, because if one person wants it, I'm betting other people will.
@FACEOFBEAR Yes, the definition of boring. I cannot understand why Microsoft made a new controller (and charged an extra twenty quid) for the Xbox One when NOTHING HAS CHANGED. Similarly the touchpad on the Dualshock 4 is the very definition of a useless gimmick - which again costs an extra twenty quid.
But hey, let's complain about motion controls and dual screen gaming some more.
@smashbrolink I picked up Star Fox 64 because of the sale price and I've never played a Star Fox game since the original SNES which I found disappointing because it was on-rails. I don't mind rails shooters as much now (in fact I have several good ones for the Wii), but damn if the controls aren't unnecessarily complicated with "shoehorned" c-button functions that seem unnecessary and easy to forget - not to mention the barrel rolls!
If anything Zero's controls sound more intuitive and flexible. I've already experienced frustration in Star Fox 64 with not being able to hit targets because my view won't arbitrarily move down a couple of degrees which takes me right out of the game.
That would be awesome. Tatsunoko vs Capcom was brilliant and featured all kinds of goofy characters, so they could absolutely do Nintendo characters justice. It's probably more about Nintendo's willingness to do this than anything else.
@meppi heck if you do a search for those games on Nintendo Life you'll find I either previewed them or reviewed them. I was actually given the XL for the purpose and eventually sold it on after I stopped writing here. There's a raft of games on the Japanese DSiWare shop that never got released elsewhere so it's worth a look.
I have a Japanese Wii and I'm pretty sure I reviewed Illust Logic + Colourful Logic for Wii for NL too. I think I sold it because I found the pointer controls too imprecise and frustrating compared to using the pen on the DS, but it's been a long time so I don't really remember. In fact I forgot I ever owned that game until you mentioned it!
Awesome, such an oversight for Nintendo. As far as I'm concerned all the 3DS picross games should be on Wii U. When I had a Japanese DSi XL I bought two great collections from Hudson in the DSiWare shop. I know there's an SNES game, but touchscreen is really the way to go with this style of game.
Looking forward to the European release - day one purchase for me!
@VanillaLake Well that is crap. The rewards just say "spend this amount in the eShop" so you'd think NINTENDO GETTING OUR MONEY would be enough. I have to hope this is a bug. I mean I regularly put £20 credit on there rather than process separate transactions for games and DLC. If they're only tracking game purchases that seems just as arbitrary as having two classes of points with overlapping rewards.
The lack of consistent colour-coding is really annoying. They have some rewards which have clear backgrounds indicating platinum or gold coins apply, but most don't: just arbitrary backgrounds or none at all. Not helpful! How about something simple like a section headed Platinum Rewards and one headed Gold Rewards?
@ikki5 I guess, it just seems a bit arbitrary is all. I mean it would have made more sense to me to restrict the kind of reward to one currency or another, that was if you were mainly interested in game discounts you could focus on gold missions or whatever.
Um, why doesn't the eShop link on the webpage take you there - hell why can't you find these titles on the Nintendo Online shop, or in My Nintendo - why aren't these all just one website!!!!???
It's a shame the rewards aren't tailored to you. I'm being offered discounts on a lot of stuff I already own - or at least think I own - which is a bit confusing.
Nintendo may not lead the pack, but what they've done is very nice with their UI and the eShop, which has to be the best digital storefront around.
I find my PS3 awful to interface with and the PlayStation Store is so slow and clunky I'm amazed they still release updates without actually improving anything. I expect Nintendo's web-based shopfront to be best of breed as well.
Like DefHalen and others I don't know why people still think their purchases aren't linked to their accounts. Even on the Wii you could have a Club Nintendo account linked which could be used by Nintendo to transfer purchases. The Wii U has a transfer tool and so does the 3DS to enable a system swap.
Obviously if your machine gets stolen/broken you'll have an issue that you need to go back to Nintendo for, but that's not really that extreme a problem compared to the reason you have to contact them, is it?
Nice, this is something I've wanted for years. I've got fibre broadband, but Nintendo's servers appear to be slow so a disc-release can take hours. Being able to kick that off from work would be welcome.
I've been able to do PS3 purchases from work, but they don't automatically download. I don't know if I'm doing it wrong or Nintendo trumped the PlayStation Store here.
I still have fantasies of an HD remake combining Fire Emblem Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn for Wii U, but at this point I'll be happy with a Wii eShop release of Radiant Dawn. Surely something has to be in the offing for these titles given all the Fire Emblem attention? I have all the Fire Emblem titles available in the VC, just haven't played them yet - Paper Mario comes first!
I can't see why they don't do an even better version of Midway Arcade Origins with all the classic arcade games from Midway, Williams, Bally and Atari Games they have rights to (with fully customisable controls this time, please). Even on iOS the approach is slipshod.
@TerrapinJess Although the rumour mill indicates a processing platform shift from PowerPC to Intel x86 I wouldn't automatically assume that rules out backwards compatibility. You could achieve that via inclusion of the PPC chip on a daughterboard or via emulation.
The idea of breaking with the Wii U (and 3DS if it is a combined handheld/console unit as rumoured) completely is quite risky. Though the Wii U base is small, you could argue that it's the hardest of the hard core Nintendo fans. Given the eShop is likely to continue and the volume of software it seems unlikely to me that they would launch a new platform which is solely dependent upon whatever they've been developing in-house for the past couple of years. If instead they could launch with a full eShop catalogue to run and effectively offer existing Wii U owners a swap as well as potentially entice new customers, that would seem a better deal even than Wii owners were given with the upgrade to Wii U.
The biggest single turn off about the PS4 for me was the lack of backwards-compatibility with the PS3 library and the much smaller size of the PS4 library. I can't see sticking the NX on the same shelf as my Wii U and re-purchasing software. The Japanese Wii, PS3 and Wii U feels like a lot of game systems as it is!
I think the best chance Nintendo has of converting people to digital is if NX comes in portable and console flavours and a single purchase of download means freely playing on both variants. They've already played with this idea on a small scale with 3DS and Wii U, so now might be the time to go all the way. I think you'll also realistically want to deploy some kind of "family sharing" model like Apple has, so that they can sell multiple handhelds. That would certainly get me to consider the portable unit.
All digital since day 1. I've never purchased physical media for my Wii U and I don't intend to. I do have a decent collection of Wii games, but I'd dump the discs in a heartbeat if I could have downloads. The ability to back up my data without a subscription (screw you Sony) makes this an easy choice.
The lack of additional maps for Wii U is a bit pants, but I'm glad to see the characters from 3DS version making it at least.
I've yet to replay using all the characters I have now, but I've got such a backlog, replaying Legends hasn't been high on my list. By this summer with the new content I may have to pick it up again!

Re: Capcom Celebrates Resident Evil's 20th Anniversary
I think the Wii RE games getting released to the eShop would be nice. I just re-purchased Umbrella Chronicles; having a download would be preferred!
Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Wants Us to Download More and Move On From Discs - Will It Work?
I think the best chance Nintendo has of converting people to digital is if NX comes in portable and console flavours and a single purchase of download means freely playing on both variants. They've already played with this idea on a small scale with 3DS and Wii U, so now might be the time to go all the way. I think you'll also realistically want to deploy some kind of "family sharing" model like Apple has, so that they can sell multiple handhelds. That would certainly get me to consider the portable unit.
Re: Poll: Are You Ready to Download More of Your Retail Games From the eShop?
All digital since day 1. I've never purchased physical media for my Wii U and I don't intend to. I do have a decent collection of Wii games, but I'd dump the discs in a heartbeat if I could have downloads. The ability to back up my data without a subscription (screw you Sony) makes this an easy choice.
Re: Nintendo Announces Separate Hyrule Warriors Season Passes for Wii U and 3DS
The lack of additional maps for Wii U is a bit pants, but I'm glad to see the characters from 3DS version making it at least.
I've yet to replay using all the characters I have now, but I've got such a backlog, replaying Legends hasn't been high on my list. By this summer with the new content I may have to pick it up again!
