Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (15th March)

ScalenePowers

I don’t know if anyone else uses Howlongtobeat here, but with my limited time as an adult it is a big part of the way I choose what I will be playing, and when.

Well last night I realized that their Fantasian Neo Dimension stat is a lie! Lol it’s listed at like 21 hours. Last night I got to about 20 and realized I was only halfway through the game (I JUST unlocked a skill tree.) I guess their number is based on the mobile game, which was released in two parts or something.

ANYWAY, I switched over to Bakeru and am having the time of my life! This may be GoodFeels finest effort

Re: Opinion: Against All Odds - Why Does RPG RNG Hate Me?

ScalenePowers

I realized that completionism was ruining my hobby when I was playing Metroid Prime on the Wii U. I never finished it the first time and the drive to scan everything was a part of that.
James Stefanie Sterling had a really good episode a few months ago about how addictive≠good in games (likely in other instances as well lol) in that video she spends a lot of time talking about how it can have a financial cost for those addicted, but most of these games thankfully do not have that.
I hope you can let go of that drive whenever you want to is what I’m saying! Seems harder than it sounds tho

Re: Chrono Trigger To Celebrate 30th Anniversary With "Various Projects"

ScalenePowers

@EarthboundBenjy you make a lot of good points here!

I think number 1. Phantasy Star 4 is criminally underrated. That should be in conversation with Chrono Trigger, and FF6 as far as the greats of the 16 big era, and maybe the reason is that it’s “just another game on the collection” Square doesn’t do that very often!

Also the I have nothing bad to say about Square’s recent AA efforts with Saga and Mana remakes, but I think if Chrono Trigger got that treatment then people riot. You gotta go BIG for a 3D reimagining and I just can’t see it.

I really liked reading your thought process!

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (8th March)

ScalenePowers

In late 2020 I mainlined the at the time entire Trine series, and by the end of the 4th I was ready to never look at them again! (It also probably gave me a better appreciation for 3 too tbh)
Lo and behold, Trine 5 comes out a few years ago and I can’t bring myself to it. But this week…. Oooh this week I was so ready! It’s the perfect game to balance Fantasian Neo Dimension and I am going to feel so very accomplished once I wrap them both up.

Re: Poll: Which Pokémon Game Really Deserves A Remake Next?

ScalenePowers

@-wc- woah! Not a single remake? We are in remake heaven!

Samus Returns (switch era, not switch though)
Link’s Awakening
Famicom Detective Club
Advance Wars Reboot Camp
Xenoblade Definitive Edition
Another Code
Thousand Year Door
Metroid Prime Remaster

I’m not insisting your instincts aren’t tuned, but I’m surprised none of that appeals to you

Re: Poll: Which Pokémon Game Really Deserves A Remake Next?

ScalenePowers

I was surprised that we never got a second Let's Go, particularly of the Silver/Gold variety? But as I say that I do think it is hampered by the naming convention.
Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee as titles don't really denote that they are reimagining Red and Blue. Also those are likely the two most popular Pokemon, and Let's Go Chicorita/Let's Go Suicine don't quite have the same draw.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (22nd February)

ScalenePowers

When I get super busy and cannot make time to play video games I tend to purchase a lot more games. I don’t know if that is giving my brain the same chemicals in some way, but it’s an impulse for sure.

So I’m inching my way through Fantasian Neo Dimension and genuinely loving it. But feel like I need to spread the pittance of attention I’ve given it to other experiences, and put in Cavern of Dreams a game I also find to be absolutely delightful

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Star Fox 64

ScalenePowers

@-wc- I think I might be the only one who is appreciating the rumble pack advertisement! But that’s very much a personal thing, and really doesn’t please aesthetically does it?

I like your comment though, because it does really seem like we think about these things more than companies do (or at least did - that amazing Arkham City cover comes to mind!)

Re: Star Fox-Inspired Space Shooter 'FUR Squadron' Is Getting A Switch 2 Sequel This Year

ScalenePowers

If you look at my comment history you see a lot of me being upset about the prevalence of roguelite titles in the last few years.

This is a good example of why that is! Because Star Fox is my favorite franchise from Nintendo, but the allure is replaying the levels over and again in order to get better each time by memorizing patterns. I feel like even if this game is mechanically similar to Star Fox 64 (a perfect video game) it will fall short because the levels resist memorization!

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (8th February)

ScalenePowers

When I get time to play video games I am casually playing Beyond Good and Evil (whatever edition on Switch) it’s as good as I remember it! Though it’s a difficult game to play casually, it was clearly not designed with sleep mode in mind because every time I open it up I forget everything I am doing!

I last played it on PS2 in like 07, after an old EGM covered it as an under appreciated gem.

Re: Opinion: With Forecasts Slashed (Again), Absolutely Everyone's Antsy For Switch 2 ASAP

ScalenePowers

Also just for fun, here is a list of Switch 1 games that are releasing physically in the next two months that I am chomping at the bit for:

  • plucky Squire
  • Bakeru
  • little Kitty Big City
  • Elypse
  • Born of Bread
  • Shadow Labyrinth

That’s not any sort of bonkers line-up but it is certainly sufficient to keep me enthralled until news about new games. Also would be pretty cool to get a general release of the Soul Reaver collection grumble grumble

Re: Random: Xbox Gets Its Own Shameful 'Mario Strikers' Knock-Off

ScalenePowers

Growing up my brother and I used to play Mariostro Soccer Legue evey day. We love Soccer Leagey and people who do not like this good game are the haters.
We would wake up early on Saturday morning and Do our chores so that mother would let us take turns on the Mariostro. Kids these days do not have manners. I think that just because you don’t like something doesn’t mean it is not the goods. My mother and brother also were loving Soccer Times. Why are you not liking it and being hater here? So what if ai this game is my childhood and all of the good childhoods Xbox gets it and that is why Sony and Nintendo are snoozing right now.

Re: US Physical Game Spending Continued To Decline Last Year, Now Sits At Half 2021's Numbers

ScalenePowers

Market conditions need to be addressed:

Inflation may have driven this, though yes while game spending as a whole continue to improve, the physical copy of a game remains more static.

I think that the pandemic also shifted the mindset of companies that they were already inching towards. Digital games only benefit publishers, and in the pandemic we were conditioned to spending that way.

It’s The Shock Doctrine, and it may not have been an inevitably were it not for corporate benefit

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (25th January)

ScalenePowers

This week was a lot on my fragile old lady brain, and honestly it’s been like that since basically Christmas! It’s been difficult to get into games, so really something like Cat Quest 2 has been exactly all I can handle! It’s really fun and low investment, but just consistently entertaining combat with a story that’s mostly just their to be charming flavor

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (18th January)

ScalenePowers

Eiyuden Chronicles: One Hundred Heroes finally broke me this week. I was excited to play it, and believe on different hardware that it is a winner. However the problems that plague many switch ports finally became more than I was willing to put up with - there are load times on the pause menu, and before each random battle!

Thankfully another game with similar art has really been exciting me! Star Ocean: Second Story remake has been incredible! I hope to play a good deal of that this weekend!

Re: Poll: So, What Did You Think Of The Switch 2 Reveal?

ScalenePowers

@NintendoWife I think you answered your own question by your own gaming habits.

I replay games frequently, and many of us do. Backwards compatibility makes 8years of purchases that much more secure, and with potential fail rates for the original console ensures that all time classics from this generation will not fad away or become prohibitively expensive

Re: Feature: 8 Games That Defined The Switch Generation

ScalenePowers

I feel like a lot of comments are people who read this list imagining it to be a best games of the generation list.

I think that they basically nailed the list, though the argument for Tetris 99/Mario 35/Smash are valid as all heck.

Also I love to see two Hollow Knight h8rs in the comments! Put me down as a third BB!!!

Re: Feature: 8 Games That Defined The Switch Generation

ScalenePowers

I appreciate the way this list was constructed. I think you all really did create a list that defines the generation for better and worse and should be proud of it!

My list of console Definers:

1. Mario + Rabbids - held the candle for Mario RPGs and the out of the gate “expect the unexpected” from the console

2. night in the Woods - an indie masterpiece that is hard to go back to, but altered the trajectory of my life and understanding of story telling

3. A Hat in Time - showing the Indie studios could compete with Nintendo itself at their own game. I’ve been meaning to revisit it

4. Persona 5: Royal - switch owners need not do without! The one represents the “and also the switch gets one!” When as a Nintendo fan I am so used to being left behind

5. Undertale - For the same reason that you all used Hades. Timeless and independent gaming bliss

6. Fire Emblem: Three Houses - my most played Switch game! Nintendo brought a classic franchise back, and while for most people that was Awakening, this was my first dive in and was blown away.

7. Breath of the Wild - I do not like this game. But I can’t deny that so much of the systems identity is tied to it, and also that it may have single handedly saved Nintendo. It also represents my personal growth, and that it’s okay to let go of things that meant so much to me in the past, because time marches on.

8. Emio: the Smiling Man - it is unfathomable that Nintendo would create a full length anime visual novel game that would also become my GOTY. Also that it would be so murderful! Nintendo took a huge risk on this and potentially added another series of must play Nintendo titles to their growing repertoire, and that’s why I’m still a fan

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (11th January)

ScalenePowers

I am in the last 25% of Valkyria Chronicles

I played the first few chapters when I briefly owned a PS3 so many years ago, but never did finish it. I did however at the 4Th one when it came to Switch and liked it well enough so when the LRG copy came out last year I finally jumped on the first.

This game is a masterpiece. I’ve cried, I’ve laughed, and I’ve yelled “KISS HER!!” At the screen a whole bunch. Top notch storytelling, and excellent writing and VO. The gameplay is not bad either though I think it may be a little busted lol.

Re: Video: 15 Exciting New Games Coming To Nintendo Switch In January 2025

ScalenePowers

Ender Magnolia has been on my radar, though actually I just recently sold my copy of Ender Lillies when I realized I never wanted to play it again.

I actually don’t think it did anything more special than other Metroidvania titles I desperately do want to replay (Dread, Prince of Persia, Vernal Edge, Guacamelee, or Sheepo.)

Replaying games is underrated! Forget a backlog, checkout that… frontlog!
