Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (3rd August)

ScalenePowers

I finally finished Paper Mario this week. Typically I take a break between RPGs, but Sea of Stars was calling my name and I am loving it!
I’m about 10 hours in and of course the art style is a delight! But I also find the combat snappy in a delightful way! It keeps me on my toes and I love the system wherein I need to do so many things to stop the enemies signposted attack.
Brilliant stuff!!

Re: Nintendo Life's Switch Summer Survey 2024

ScalenePowers

Idk what the plan is to use this data for, but a question that I was surprised to not see was about which third party series were you introduced to this generation
During the past generations many of us Nintendo owners missed third party stuff and the switch has done a fine job rectifying this.
My answer would have been the Ys series

Re: Iconic Publication Game Informer Is Closing Down After 33 Years

ScalenePowers

My heart will always go out to the workers hurt by corporate downsizing. There are always talented staff members in art teams, editors, and writers who are hurt by these actions from disconnected c suite types…

… also I do not lament the end of this publication. IGN gets so much vitriol (and it’s not all unwarranted) for being chummy with publishers, but they are nothing compared to the editorial board at Gameinformer. That magazine was the corporate mouth piece of the largest games store in the US, and I don’t know that I have ever been able to take their views seriously.

Re: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door And Luigi's Mansion 2 HD Both Surpass One Million Sales

ScalenePowers

@Lanmanna Mario RPG was over 3 million, and Origami King is currently the highest selling in the series.
The disappointment is that for years paper Mario fans have been hoping to see it return to the old formula and have convinced ourselves that if the series were to be a more traditional RPG once more that it would propel the series into a greater popularity. I think we are hoping to see this one be the highest selling Mario RPG so that the series will continue in the style we prefer.

These numbers while commendable in their own way, don’t support the cause/make us less confident that Nintendo will go all in on a sequel in this more desirable (to us) formula

Re: Shinji Mikami Wants Suda51 To Make A Killer7 Sequel

ScalenePowers

Uhhh yeah that would rule actually. I know it’s more difficult than just snapping his fingers, but yes more Killer 7.

I’m very pleased that we got Sine Mora Ex, the Silver Case series, No More Heroes series, Lollipop Chainsaw, and Shadows of the Damned… but I’m insatiable! Killer 7 is my most sought port!

Re: Review: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (Switch) - Still The King Of Mario RPGs

ScalenePowers

@dkxcalibur hey, I know I’m months later lol. But I also didn’t care for the original, and found myself falling off of the remake at the exact same place (the tree/chapter 2.) but gosh I took advice from a few people and stuck with it, and Wowzaroo does the game pick up in chapter 3!

The glitz pit onward is some of the finest video game I have ever played. I hope you’ll give it another shot, I am so happy that I did

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (27th July)

ScalenePowers

Taking a break from Paper Mario: TTYD to play a shorter game off of the backlog, and I have reached for Furi

Early impressions are not the best, and in fact I think that name might have been a self fulfilling prophecy. I’ve only fought the first boss of 7 but I cannot believe some of the decisions that have been made by developers. This boss is 10 minutes of tutorial, and then only susceptible to certain attacks when they telegraph their moves. Meaning the player not only needs to memorize how to evade attacks, but also know the pattern to damage him. Also if you screw it up the boss regains his health!

So I’ve set it to easy, and beat it on my first try. Lol

Re: Poll: Do You Prefer Fire Emblem: Three Houses Or Engage?

ScalenePowers

Three Houses BB!! It’s my most played Switch game, and while a core of the appeal is the relationship angle, it’s removal is not what kept me from embracing Engage.
I was never interested in that title, I believe everyone who says It is a fine example of tactical combat - but that exists in spades on the system. I hate the character design, and I did miss the intriguing story, but what I hated more than anything was the obsession with its own lineage.

Fire Emblem since 2016 has had Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Fire Emblem Warriors (twice!) Engage, and the mobile game - all separate projects but simultaneously homages to the franchises history and its just… so boring! Once I saw Engage relied on calling back to former characters again I knew I wasn’t interested.

Hopefully the next title course corrects, even if it isn’t the Three Houses follow up I am hoping for

Re: Review: Bō: Path Of The Teal Lotus (Switch) - Charm Meets Challenge In This Gorgeous Metroidvania

ScalenePowers

This one has been on my radar for some time, which is perhaps misguided. I’m one of the few for whom Hollow Knight didn’t quite land, I also don’t like Okami (which I understand to have been an influence, though maybe only in the art direction?)
But still there is something undeniably attractive about this title!
The next time I am grabbing something from Playasia I’ll throw it in the cart most likely.

Thanks for the update @sephazon!

Re: Mario + Rabbids Director Davide Soliani Leaves Ubisoft After 25 Years

ScalenePowers

This is the last straw from Ubisoft lol. The team he was working with kept me a little intrigued by some of their titles. The little we know about Soliani is that he is deeply passionate, and worked among talent to create two stone cold classics.
I’d very much like to wish him success with whatever projects he ends up working on…. Maybe with Nintendo ??

Re: Rumour: 'Tales Of Xillia Remastered' Switch Release Spotted Online

ScalenePowers

@Classic603 I know it has its fans! My wife played that newer grittier one on PS4 and she didn’t quite care for it. Meanwhile I haven’t given the series a second chance since Tales of Vesperia on the GameCube.

By last count there are 138,000 big 30+ hour RPGs out there that I want to play. Who has time for one that’s just okay?

Re: Feature: Super Rare Games Talks Digital Publishing, "Shorts" Criticism, And Anticipating The Switch Successor

ScalenePowers

I echo @ogre84 Pumpkin Jack would be sick.
The Mr Perkins mentioned The Last Campfire which tickled me. I put that off for years waiting on a physical but finally caved in… and kinda hated it lol. So I’m glad I didn’t wait.

As always, limited physical releases from indie devs are not the alternative to unlimited runs, they are the alternative to NO physical release

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (20th July)

ScalenePowers

Omg is it really Saturday already? I’ve been at my parents home all week helping my dad around.
Which means that I’ve not had much time for games, but I have managed to carve out an hour or so in the evening to play Paper Mario: TTYD and it’s finally as good as everyone always said! I almost fell off in chapter 2, but the Glitz Pit pulled me in so hard and now that I’m in Twilight Town it’s just the coolest game ever!

Also Super Kiwi 64 cuz I realized I never did play that one

Re: Random: "Let Them Play, First Thing!" - Sakurai Is Tired Of Slow Game Openings

ScalenePowers

I feel like Kingdom Hearts 2 and Twilight Princess are two examples that get used a lot to represent a slow opening, but in both of those cases I adore the beginning.
The slice of life introductions really ground me in a story the way other openings don’t. (Also I will tolerate just about anything from a game if I like the writing, see Color Splash)

Alternatively Persona 5 Royal’s intro kinda didn’t work for me because how confusing everything was. Sakurai’s tastes may just be different from my own

Re: Alternative Titles For Pokémon Ruby And Sapphire Reportedly Discovered

ScalenePowers

@KingMike It was like a 7.6 for a review where her point was that the mechanic was not fun to engage with, but that the game forces you to. I think it is explained well in the content of the review, but the editor shortened it to "too much water" (which is objectively hilarious, and subjectively a bad summation of the the point she was making.)
Those threats were pretty serious, especially ten years ago when that wasn't something that we knew was basically a ticking time bomb for someone with a presence online.

The whole thing is just kind of gross, and would be best forgotten.

Re: Alternative Titles For Pokémon Ruby And Sapphire Reportedly Discovered

ScalenePowers

The “too much water” discourse is a real stain on our gaming hobby/discourse. Obviously it is a silly reductive way to sum up an opinion on a game (an opinion that was clearly explained in the original text.) but the harassment Kallie P got in response was pretty heinous. To the point that I see it commonly used here and shudder a little bit, though I know the intent was not offensive

Re: Mailbox: eShop Closures, Comedy, The Physical Future - Nintendo Life Letters

ScalenePowers

I sent a letter that was not featured (and that’s understandable if it wasn’t to your taste) but I had trouble deciphering if I had submitted it correctly and didn’t want to keep flooding your inbox. Do you have a way to let writers know that their submission was seen?
I’d rather not re-enter my letter once more if it’s something you aren’t interested in

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (13th July)

ScalenePowers

This weekend I’d like to wrap up Trials of Mana remake, and resume my play though of Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door.

Trials is good - probably the most 7.5 action rpg I’ve ever played but honestly that’s kind of my favorite thing (I was a Kingdom Hearts kid after all!) Some of these Benevadons make me want to scream though

Re: According To Hideki Kamiya, Ōkami's Development Team Was 'Weak'

ScalenePowers

@Maxz lmao I saw that someone responded and was like “oh no Okami fans are coming for me!” But I’m glad you agree!
I think that I’m able to overlook a lot of the shortcomings with the visuals for the sake of it having been a PS2 game (like the trees,) but I agree that the character models communicating in their funky way doesn’t do their bland dialogue any favors!

I don’t much care for the Zelda comparisons either! It is just an action adventure game? Wind Waker certainly holds up better and you know what? Twilight Princess does too. I that games art style is massively under appreciated

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (6th July)

ScalenePowers

I’d been doing a fine job clearing my backlog, and was even about halfway through the Trials of Mana remake… but then I got an itch to replay Fire Emblem: Three Houses
So I’m doing that (just got past the time skip)

But I’m not even playing a new house lol. I don’t like most of the Golden Deer and have never been able to finish that route.

I need to get back on it though! This fall is going to be full of new cool games!!

Re: Poll: What's Your Switch Game Of The Year Of 2024 So Far?

ScalenePowers

These types of things are always difficult, because my favorite game I play in any given year typically does not release that year, although this year I have made more of an effort.
Probably my winner is Prince of Persia, but I did also play Neon White and Persona 4 this year which I likely enjoyed more.
