Re: Valkyria Chronicles Remastered Scores A Limited Run Switch Release, Pre-Orders Live

@YourDaddy okay yeah that all scans and sounds cool as heck. It also sounds
Like I’m talking to a VC super fan that is exciting.

You kind of nailed what I had perceived about VC2 which is why I skipped it back in the day. I think I just have more of an aversion to trope-y characters than most (it tanked BOTW for me :/) Especially seeing that the first one so effortlessly built real characters and avoided much of that pitfall in anime adjacent properties!!

VC4 is an interesting case, and is a game I’ve never had the chance to talk about with anyone. I think I loved it for the first half, I’d say maybe up and until I got to the giant battleship. Idk if it’s the result of some of the story twists, but it started to grate on me more than I feel like it should have. So while I finished 4 it didn’t leave the same impression on me that 1 did.

Which brings us to 3! Which looks so so cool, and the story sounds awesome!! I’d very much like to see it remade/remastered with the canvas engine. I’d buy it day one, especially with this endorsement!

@Ooyah it’s so pretty!! I get why I wanted to keep going, and you never know when a missio you’re working on is going to have some obscure connection to the original game.

I think the training thing is more in my head 😅 I just love being in Soldier as Zack who wants to live up to the legacy of Sephiroth, Angeal, and Genesis. I feel like if I’m not killing every enemy during a story mission in one hit then Im not playing through a canonical run haha

Re: Valkyria Chronicles Remastered Scores A Limited Run Switch Release, Pre-Orders Live

ScalenePowers

ALSO this is incredible news. In the Limited Run Showcase they announced Wolfenstien 2 was getting a rerelease with the whole game on the cart, and my reaction was that they really should do Valkyrie Chronicles instead.

I feel I may have willed this into being.

This game rules so hard, though I never finished it!!! I played and enjoyed 4 when it released on Switch, and it was missing some of the charm of this one. It also had a weird twist that I did not care for where children were literal fuel for the enemies death weapons?? That always say weird with me

This weekend I plan on finishing Crisis Core: Reunion….

…. That’s actually been my plan for the last week. It’s not a super long game BUT I am compulsively doing missions instead of playing the main game. They are all essentially the same dang thing but the go by so quickly and the flashy combat/allure of getting so stupidly strong through the materia system is just too strong of a hook!

If I can stick to the plan though - build Aerith her flower cart, kick it with Sephiroth for a little bit, and then go die - maybe I’ll make time to finally start The Legend of Tianding

Re: Hands On: Epic Mickey: Rebrushed - A Fresh Coat Of Paint For A Once-Flawed Platformer

ScalenePowers

@shgamer I can’t speak to those comments on Darksiders stuff, also Darksiders 3 is good and h8rs can die mad lol.

But the Embracer THQNORDIC thing sucks because THQNordic was kinda rad for a bit there? But we’re then bought buy embracer who sucks. Is that an accurate summation?

So the anger at THQNORDIC kinda puzzles me, because they have been pretty consistent in quality with switch ports, and also not being generally scummy with micro transactions etc.

Re: Skies Of Arcadia-Inspired JRPG 'Sky Oceans' Bags A Release Date

ScalenePowers

@EarthboundBenjy this is the crux of the liberal project as laid out in Frances Fukuyama’s The End of History wherein all aesthetics are nostalgic.

That’s the harshest take, but it is consistent with some of the biggest projects of the past few years. An RPG like Sea of Stars rises above its contemporaries like Chained Echoes (also a “retro” project aesthetically but I think more of necessity) by advertising itself as Chrono Trigger inspired. Can games just be new games? Or do they have to be new versions of old games?

Clearly they can lol obviously there are plenty of them that don’t draw from retro aesthetics, but it is very prevalent!!

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (17th August)

ScalenePowers

I’m still on Sea of Stars! I got to a part yesterday that made me weep openly, and I suppose if you know you know lol

Elsewhere I was playing a lot of Alien: Isolation. It does rule, but also I’m stuck at this one part and I’m no longer scared of the queen, just really annoyed. Leave me alone lady, I’ve got stuff to do!

Re: 'The Knightling' Takes Inspiration From 3D Zelda In A Promising Debut Trailer

ScalenePowers

@WaffleRaptor01 I think that’s a lot of words that don’t address the issue we are talking about. BotW isn’t really a game I like, but I also don’t really care for the original Zelda. They did make four games I very much love, and stopped making them when they had their other ideas, which is fine too. BotW may have even saved Nintendo, I’d go that far

I like Twilight Princess best 🤷‍♀️

Re: 'The Knightling' Takes Inspiration From 3D Zelda In A Promising Debut Trailer

ScalenePowers

@Bratwurst35 I agree with all of this, although I think that while the genre shift is noticeable in each title, they do have that singular Darksiders flavor that connects them (which is to say, belonging in the grand tradition of OoT 3D Zelda formula.)

I think that Darksiders 2 is the most dungeon focused, with so many tightly designed puzzle box locations, it really brings back that Twilight Princess emphasis on deep diving into puzzle -based/item-gated problem solving

Re: Random: Alien: Romulus Pays Tribute To Alien: Isolation With... Telephones?

ScalenePowers

This is so cool!! I am pretty new to the Alien franchise, only recently watching the first three films in perpetration for Alien: Isolation getting a physical release through LRG.

I was shocked at how compelled I was by Alien, only to have the rug pulled from under me by Aliens for being a brilliant film in its own way! I feel like Isolation deserves its piece in the wider franchise, now that I am finally playing the dang thing. It’s so moody and interesting. Love to see film taking inspiration from games

Re: Critically-Panned 'Borderlands' Movie Flops At The Box Office

ScalenePowers

This was predictable, though not inevitable?

Borderlands is a series NOTORIOUS for obnoxious writing that you sit through in order to get to the fun looter shooter gameplay. But if you get rid of the gameplay… you just have the writing?

Other branded movies (that aren’t Barbie, Mario, or Sonic) have been successful in at least part due to the contracts with the Department of Defense. I can’t imagine any other reason Battleship would do well, but this didn’t.

In other words: what would’ve a good candidate for a game turned movie? Maybe any other IP than borderlands

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (10th August)

ScalenePowers

@Kraven I think you’ve really
Captured the essence of what makes the Ys series so appealing! The stories always start with smaller scale personal stories that unravel into something much grander!

Ys 8 is a great example of that! Memories of Celceta (not on Switch - harrumph) starts with Adol getting a job mapping a forest. And that’s just so…. Mundane? But the characters in every tale ground the whole thing and always compel through to the end!

Don’t sleep on Ys 9 either! It has a reputation for being lesser than 8 (fair) but it is still excellent!

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (10th August)

This weekend I have taken a short break from Sea of Stars to jump back into Alien: Isolation
I’d mostly dropped off that title because I found the fire fights with humans IMPOSSIBLE. The secret as it turns out, was to raise the brightness beyond what the game tells you is correct. Im all for dark moody immersion, but I like my games a little more playable 😜
That game does own though, sneaking in and out of the Comms Tower without being spotted and turned to pulp by the Working Joes is the most exhilarating thing I’ve experience in games all year
