Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (5th October)

ScalenePowers

Ooh!!! I’m on Echoes of Wisdom like everyone else!!

Though I like to imagine that you all are keeping up with my ongoing efforts to become a fan of Outer Wilds and there are updates. I played it for like 3 hours! It was fun, and I got genuinely emotional the first time I took off from the planet.

But then the frustration set in. I’m not the best with games that don’t provide a lot of direction, but also (and maybe this is just the Switch Version?) it’s so glitchy!!! Every time the game threatens to be fun something stupid happens, and it’s really killing some of the fun :/

Re: Nintendo Expands Switch Online's GBA Library With Two More Titles

ScalenePowers

F-Zero is one of their “show off new tech” series. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they had a new one primed as a launch title for Switch 2.

It would look gorgeous. Provide goodwill from the fanbase. Release before a new Mario Kart (I think this is crucial) and provide solid first party support in addition to their bigger title (presuming they have a launch killer app)

Re: Upcoming Sea Of Stars Free Update Adds Local Co-Op, New Combat, Cinematics And More

ScalenePowers

Quality of life updates are always welcome! I beat Sea of Stars probably a month ago now, and loved it to pieces. I did not commit to the best ending however (it asks a lot
Of players, but god bless whoever sticks it out) and I think it undoes a dramatic moment from the game that while making the ending a bit more cheerful, I feel would not be in the best interest of the narrative

Re: Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom's Frame Rate Is "Even Worse" Than Link's Awakening

ScalenePowers

This generation is the first time I remember thinking so much about performance. I know it has always been an issue to an extent though.
This is my concern with a Switch 2. Nicer looking games sound great, but I would hate for new games to look better and perform poorly.

All I’m saying is I don’t need games to look significantly better than what the Switch can do, I just want switch games to perform well!

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (21st September)

ScalenePowers

I have managed to narrow my backlog down to just four titles. In theory I’d like to have it complete before THE FLOOD starting with Epic Mickey and Echoes of Wisdom. That’s fine for the first three titles Gylt Emio: The Smiling Man and Curse of the Sea Rats which have all been great fun in their own way!

But the last title is Outer Wilds and I have waiting 5 years for this. I feel so much pressure to love it, to live it, to be changed by it! That I need to find JUST the right time to dive in

Re: Review: REYNATIS (Switch) - Underbaked Action-RPG Fare That Plays Rough On Switch

ScalenePowers

What a disappointment. There are three very exciting games coming out next week (this, Epic Mickey, and Zelda.) Due to work and school obligations I chose only one and it was originally Reynatis! It’s not too late to swap the preorder for Mickey or Zelda then.

Maybe if this had released 2 years ago when I was nabbing everything that came my way and looked remotely interesting!

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (7th September)

This weekend I had originally planned to be all about my copy of El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron that finally arrived from LRG. But after putting in the hour I promised it, I think our relationship has soured.

I think those sensitive to poor platforming, and loose combat mechanics may find that they are unable to look past the flaws in order to enjoy the resplendent visual feast.
Which is a shame. It does look honestly incredible, but fails being a game for me. There is so much incredible visual art, we are drowning in it across the spectrum of art, but even in video games! I think this game deserves its flowers, specifically as a project that is 13 years old, but something about leaning so strongly into visuals at the expense of gameplay dates this game in late gen 7 more than poorer quality graphics ever could.

So I guess I’m on to Curse of the Sea Rats

I just finished the hour I promised that I’d put in before setting this guy down.

Re: Zelda Timeline Featuring Breath Of The Wild And Tears Of The Kingdom Spotted

ScalenePowers

Arlo has the most satisfying timeline explanation for BotW, the Jurassic Park 2 theory. In which he theorized that BOTW is not a merger of the timelines despite elements of each existing in it.
Rather because of the cyclical nature of these stories, any number of events is bound to happen on any timeline, and in this event BotW is the natural end result of any timeline.

I like this, it’s about as satisfying of a connection that they could make, and then let’s the off the hook for placement. Honestly it could even make Breath of the Wild the new jumping off point for new stories… at least it could before TotK. Which I think is the most willful disregard of the timeline yet, as it doesn’t even meaningfully connect to its direct predecessor! I think I ultimately agree with @Dark_isatari that Nintendo can not have a timeline if they want to, but when they half-a$$ it the series is honestly worse

Re: Random: Former Nintendo Boss Reggie Fils-Aimé Rediscovers His N64 Collection

ScalenePowers

@nessisonett I think you saying that is fair. But it’s also an interesting case study in the makeup of a “hidden gem.” Because… it’s Tetris, in theory that can’t be a hidden gem! But while I’ve only dabbled in Tetrisphere I played hundreds of hours of New Tetris, and both are forgotten iterations on the same console! (Side note: I was bummed with how safe they played that collection in the direct)

Anyway I guess Tetrisphere probably counts!

@coalescence I would wager that I’m too deep into video game culture to be a good metric for what is and isn’t hidden lol.
I feel like those games get decent coverage, but then I remember that I know this from
YouTube videos with like 10,000 views and that one Hard Drive article that ranked all 200+ N64 games 😅

Re: Review: Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club (Switch) - A Stylish Mystery With One Foot In The Past

ScalenePowers

@Uncle_Franklin I don’t disagree ultimately they should be investing in a Star Fox title (it’s in my top three Nintendo Franchises) but this is not zero sum. Resources are limited is much too broad, as is the months of the year comparison. This team isn’t taking from those games on a macro level.

I think a better comparison is to think of Nintendo production as a zoo. You aren’t going to not get an amphibian house because you have a bird exhibit. If 3D Mario games are the elephants, and Star Fox is the red pandas, then Famicom Detective Club is the one little section with the African Poison Dart Frogs. Maybe not the thing most people come from, but it’s still important to satisfy that audience.

We should be getting a Star Fox game, and we should be voicing that opinion. Famicom Detective Club however need not be sacrificed

Re: Review: Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club (Switch) - A Stylish Mystery With One Foot In The Past

ScalenePowers

I don’t think this team could have made a Star Fox or F Zero. In fact those two series specifically are among Nintendos most technically complex games, and this… isn’t that. This is like the opposite of those games!

I think it’s fair to insist that this series modernize in some ways and try to expand its appeal worthy of a Nintendo iconic franchise… but also this is probably the exact game fans wanted? And it’s GOOD that Nintendo is making niche titles in addition to their more mainstream output

ScalenePowers

I’m waiting on a Yakuza physical copy

  • this is the obligatory comment lol

It was basically the only announcement that immediately hooked me, though Morsels and the Moth game look cool! The Sea of Stars DLC is free, that rules honestly and it looks cool.

My one disappointment: I really thought we’d get Soul Reaver.

I am neutral on the rest of it. I think it’s neat that they combined them - I sort of think that the branding is weird though? Why is it two separate shows stapled together? Just may it a partner showcase and show indies??
