Re: Top 100 Nintendo Games, As Chosen By Nintendo Life & IGN

Oldstalk

Placing Awakening so high on the list and Three Houses so low is definitely a choice. Some would arguee Three Houses do not have interesting gameplay. Fair enough, most of the maps are simple, even though the DLC helped greatly.

However, Awakening is even worst in that front, all strategic component are reduced to ashe thanks to the pair ability, which makes any unit into a freaking monster. And contrary to Three Houses, it does not have interesting characters, lore or story, and its replay value is significantely lower too.

Re: Square Enix Switch 2 Launch Title Scores A Limited-Time Discount

Oldstalk

One of the best J-RPG I ever played, I recommand it to everyone that never touched it.

Did not touch the Switch 2 version, but I have great memories of this game, mainly the combat system which is deeply strategic, each boss forcing you to experiment and change your team composition to overcome it.

The ending is not the greatest, but the rest makes up for it completely.

Re: Hollow Knight: Silksong Update Announced, Here Are The Patch Notes

Oldstalk

@Dr_Awkward Well... did you publish any game so you can finally openly criticize video games in general... ? Did you wait to manufacture your own car before you can form a judgment on the ones you bought ? Did you wait to build your own house before you could say if the ones you can visit are great or not ?

And yes, 7 years in isolation, without any feedback from anyone, leads you to some sort of bubble where you are more and more distant from your original fanbase.

Re: Hollow Knight: Silksong Update Announced, Here Are The Patch Notes

Oldstalk

And that's a game I will never touch again after finishing it (unlike the first Hollow Knight). It was such a chore, it felt just like work at the end of act 3.

If Hollow Knight was Dark souls 1, this game definitely feels like Dark Souls 2, i.e. a game where the developers did not understand what made the first game great and added extra BS just for the sake of making things more difficult (more enemies at the same time, more damages taken from enemies, convoluted progression system...).

Re: Opinion: Silksong's Soundtrack Rules, But You Should Turn It Off

Oldstalk

Silksong : breath
Everyone : OH MY GOD BEST GAME EVER

A lot of people are reacting to this game like it's their first videogame ever. Oh my god, Hornet makes sounds when she moves ? There is HD rumbles ? Has anyone ever heard of such a thing ? You can JUMP ? Woaaaaaaaah.

I have no idea what sets apart Silksong's sound design from other games. I'm pretty sure no one knows either, but the hype is just really strong with this one uh.

Re: Opinion: Resident Evil Requiem Represents A Turning Point For Switch 2

Oldstalk

Unfortunately, I wont get it, as I'm too scared to play this type of game. Heck, I was too scared to play Metroid Dread (played 20 minutes of it, was too scared, gave up). But I applaud Capcom for porting 2 recent Resident evil games, and release this new entry day one on Switch 2 ! I hope every major publisher does this in the future.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (20th September)

Oldstalk

@Glitchling78 You are no true soul. Go back crawling in Gross Moto with the likes of you, pilgrim, you are not worthy of the citadel... !

Just kidding, but the Hollow Knight's community almost speak like the pilgrims in this game when you criticize the difficulty. Good for you you can ease up the pain and have fun !

Re: Team Cherry Explains Hollow Knight: Silksong's "Steep Difficulty"

Oldstalk

I'm getting incredibly tired with this game and the whole discussion around it.

It's a good game. It's a great product. That's it. Not gonna change the industry.

Truth is, people praise this game because of its content-price ratio, and that alone. Not because it presents interesting game design elements. And it does not. It's a classic metroidvania, with ton of contents. Most of its boss are just huge HP tanks, or swarm of enemies, or both at the same time. Most of the areas present a simple gimmick, quite often "how to make our player annoyed". Three consecutive poison swamps areas. Really... original. Most of the quests are MMORPG inspired, like "ohhhhhh, how about you give this to Bernie, at the other side of the map, uh ?", or "collect 15 burnt flesh, ohhhh, exciting, what a fresh idea !".

Buuuuut it's 20 bucks so people feel good about their purchase, and feel like their money was well spent, and that somehow they are fighting "greedy corporations", as if none of us had already a massive backlog of games to play, more than enough until the end of times. Quantity really is the most important thing in this industry uh...

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (13th September)

Oldstalk

Silksong. I still have to 100% it. It's a great game, but some aspects (how much HPs boss generally have, which make their fights long and tedious) are definitely making the experience worse, for no other reason than, in my humble opinion, artificially increase the game length. But that's only my 2 cents.

Donkey Kong Bananza for the new DLC announced ! I'm not sure it's worth the price tbh, but it's a great nostalgia trip, and it's always fun to smash stuff

Re: Nintendo Direct September 2025: Every Announcement, Game Reveal, Trailer

Oldstalk

I found it excellent, but I'm extremely biased, as I really wanted a new Fire Emblem game, and guess what hehehe

Plus, a DLC for DK, which makes me really happy, I wanted more and more for this game, and it's really fun this far ! DK's island is such a nostalgia trip !

Metroid Prime 4 finally got a release date, we can finally countdown the days !

And Kirby Air Riders is gonna have a new direct lmao, I laughed a little bit when I heard it, oh Sakurai never change

Re: "I Have No Words" - Silksong Fans Are Losing Their Minds Over One Bench

Oldstalk

It's such a minor thing in the midst of all the BS this game throws at you. I almost forgot this one bench.

Wait until they reach this one boss at the end of act 2. But of course, I'm sure the people that yell "git gud" everytime someone criticizes this game's difficulty enjoyed every minute of it. What's not to love ? Such a well designed boss with clever mechanics, am I right ?

I wish the devs would add an even harder difficulty with only one hit point and no bench. For the TRUE Hollow Knight players. Fun ! So each time they fight a boss and die, they can climb their way through the entire map, because if we learned anything with Silksong, it's that apparently, long runbacks are peak videogame design 😉

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Direct September Predictions - What Do You Hope To See?

Oldstalk

What I want to see :

  • A release date for Metroid Prime 4, at long last
  • A new 3D Mario
  • A new Fire Emblem, a true one this time please, not this weird stuff we got with Engage.
  • DLC for Mario Kart World, please ! Some new content, new stuffs to do !
  • Switch 2 editions of Paper Mario TTYD and Paper Mario Origami King, two fantastic games
  • Switch 2 edition of Pikmin 4
  • Elden Ring's release date
  • FF VII R's release date
  • Some big new port for Switch 2
  • Clair Obscur's port for Switch 2
  • Some new third party announcement for Switch 2

Re: Talking Point: Is Hollow Knight: Silksong Too Difficult?

Oldstalk

@Azileron I wonder what's the artistic vision behind Bilewater, give everyone a preview of the life of a damned in hell, condamned to eternal suffering 🤣 ?

Honestly, this game's difficulty is comparable to Dark Souls 2 : devs of this game did not understand what made the first game great, and they just went "ohhhhhh you like difficult games uh, what about 50 enemies at the same time without adequate moveset to deal with them, 5 minutes runbacks and random Kaizo Mario stuff ?". Sure, you can make a game as difficult as you want, but at some point, it just turns out into a joke game like Kaizo Mario. What's the frontier between a troll game and a real game ? Isn't it the fact that it's accessible to a good fraction of players ?

Re: Talking Point: Is Hollow Knight: Silksong Too Difficult?

Oldstalk

"Is Silksong too difficult ?"

I mean, is the hardest metroidvania ever made, difficult 🤣 ? The stuff this game throws at you in the end game is absolute insanity.

Too difficult though ? For most people indeed it is. It's definitely not possible for some people to 100% it.

Is it a problem ? I mean, nothing really is a problem when it comes to video games, it's just some side activity we do for fun. But it would be nice if more people had access to the game, through an easy mode for example. More health, less damage taken, that sort of stuff...

Re: Hollow Knight: Silksong's Upcoming Patch Will Nerf The Difficulty In Certain Areas

Oldstalk

@Max_the_German Well I wish I could have preordered it, like said in my previous comment.

And yes, a lot of people bought the game without playing the first one, out of general hype, but since no reviews were released at the time, they could not be completely informed in their purchase.

It is completely on Team Cherry because they had the option to give the game early to reviewers.

Re: Hollow Knight: Silksong's Upcoming Patch Will Nerf The Difficulty In Certain Areas

Oldstalk

It would be very much appreciated if everything in this game did not do 2 damages. It's crazy how when certain boss finally do 1 damage on most of their attacks (Widow and Phantom), their fight becomes, much, much, MUCH, funnier and exciting. Also, they do not summon random enemies.

Could they also add a feature allowing you to just respawn in front of every boss (Elden Ring did it) ? Doing 30s to 1m runbacks is not fun. It never has. It never will. It's just a waste of time, and it diminishes the enjoyment out of certain bosses (last judge cough cough, and yes I timed it, it takes 1 minute between the bench and the boss arena, so if you die 20 or 30 times, it's 30 minutes of your life wasted on meaningless content... and it's not even the worst runback in the game !)
