Not sure what he’s referring to when he says “Early adopters of new Nintendo hardware aren't very price-sensitive”. Because historically there’s never been an expensive Nintendo system.
I don't mind that Nintendo do this. We're talking about a handful of games, real classics only, and redone with proper effort and care. Why not charge full price. Personally I don't care for DKCR (feels too 'western' for a first party Nintendo game), but generally I'm all for HD remakes / remasters.
@ScalenePowers But aren’t you going to keep your previous consoles around? I mean, you kinda have to, every other system, because BC never goes further than one generation. So I could have sold the GameCube (because Wii), or the Wii (because Wii U), but then not GC…
I agree that it’s beneficial if it comes with modernized outputs. Like Wii games over HDMI via Wii U. So let’s see - if Switch 2 offers something over Switch 1 in terms of video quality (for Switch 1 games).
Other than that I can’t really follow your points. How does BC keep older games from getting prohibitly expensive?
I think Nintendo put it into the trailer to keep sales of Switch 1 games from dropping like a stone. Because, true, many are going to sell their old systems to afford the new one, and if they can’t expect to play their games anymore in a few months they’d surely hold off of buying any from now on.
Can somebody fill me in why backwards compatibility is such a big deal that it’s the only feature mentioned it in this trailer?
I mean it’s nice to have, but personally I play a game for 3 months, finish it, then rarely pick it up again. I guess multiplayer games are a different story, but is BC that important?
@martynstuff I’m curious, why wouldn’t you want it to release before you can buy one? What’s wrong with it being on the shelves for a few weeks already and then you buy one? Does strike me as selfish too yes, but also completely irrelevant, so enjoy
I‘d agree that the trailer was very safe and not too exciting. And I’m not sure the console itself looks ‘Nintendo’ enough, it has a certain generic dudebro Steam look… hoping for a second color option!
In the end it’s about the games, which will be great of course.
@jolteon23 I have to say Emio does that even more that the older two games. Not sure it's just pacing, the mechanic is a bit odd anyway. How they keep you cycling through the commands. I can live with it, but this time they've cranked up the instances where the same command needs to be repeated.
(ask): hmmm
(ask): hmmm
(think): I should hear what he has to say
(ask): hmmm
(ask): actually, come to think of it
Haha I wasn't going to watch the trailer, but your complaints made me curious I don't mind the randomness, looks interesting (never heard of the original game). But the dialog box popping sound is grating already, that's a good point.
@jolteon23 Is chapter 5 the one that’s basically one long conversation that goes nowhere? I’m super happy that Nintendo continued the series, but boy does it test your patience at times!
@MischiefMaker Oh can you tell me one thing: I bought Collection of Mana some years ago and was so annoyed by the borders that I didn’t even really start Trials. Instead I wrote a mail to their support asking for an update with a „black borders“ option. Did they ever address that by any chance? (I’m sure they didn’t.)
I would continue with Emio, but my girlfriend wants me to wait til she returns. So instead I went back to "Mario 3D All-Stars". It's interesting, I'd only finished Galaxy which I thought was as fun as it was on the Wii. Sunshine on the other hand doesn't look and feel right, I need to boot up the GC original to confirm. And 64 looks fine but inputs feel delayed.
@Dazman I don't know what leak / info you're referring to. But I've been following the discussion at Digital Foundry over the past years. They've had a pretty clear picture of the hardware for a while now, and it's always been quite modest because of Nintendo's history and priorities. DF was never shocked about that. Did anything new come to light?
I don't know how your comparison works either, one is a mobile chipset and your laptop uses different types of CPU and GPU. Are you talking about benchmarks?
Either way I'm not concerned. There's only so much you can pack into a cheap device if you're not willing to sell at a loss, which Nintendo has categorically never done. But they know what they're doing, it's going to be much better than Switch and good enough for me. I've been around since the NES and don't need cutting edge graphics.
Oh and I've checked with an inflation calculator, your laptop would cost 1000€ today.
@Dazman Your 10 year old laptop likely didn’t cost (today‘s equivalent of) 400€ and wasn’t as compact either, was it? I read these comparisons all the time.. „my iPhone has better graphics“ yeah well your iPhone cost 1200€ 🤯 Nintendo consoles are dirt cheap compared to other devices.
@Dee123 Yeah people are just venting their frustration cause they’re impatient. But as soon as Nintendo pulls the curtain everybody will be hyped. Or not, if they present something stupid (but I don’t expect them to).
What do you all think, how is Nintendo going to handle the (inevitable) cross-platform release of Metroid?
It feels like a great opportunity to show off the step up in graphics with the new system. 4K vs HD, but possibly a lot more than that. Advanced lighting? And maybe backwards compatibility comes with automatic upgrades this time around, maybe Switch games will run smoother / higher framerate / higher resolution etc even without developers retouching them?
@Elock Or you might reason the other way around: Metroid‘s release date is confirmed for 2025, and we‘re all certain it will release on both the old and the new system, so that’s a strong indication that the new system will arrive this year?
@DripDropCop146 Naaaah the cool thing is, they'll have worked on an all-new Mario Kart for so long now. Imagine the luxury of having 10 years between entries. You get a leap in technology, a hungry audience, and all the time to create and polish something big and new.
Hope Zelda Echoes is not turning into a flop for Nintendo, I've been a little harsh with criticism myself. It was wonderful in the end and now we'll have a long wait before there's a new entry again.
Hope that Switch 2 launches with a new 3D Mario which is the other best thing to happen, besides a new Zelda.
I like the MK sets and there’s some kids in the family that will be very happy about those. Earmarked. Animal Crossing sets are reasonably cute, but I wouldn’t know who to give them to.
Does anybody know more about the game? Is 2D a hint to the game being based on Terminator 2? That would be awesome. And as for 2D, I hope it’s not too generic. Most modern 2D games have this same-y feeling and look, probably cause they’re all using the same engines.
Let’s be honest, that’s what they would have said (probably did say) about „Wii 2“ up until its unveiling as „Wii U“. Analysts‘ imagination is very limited.
Hopefully for Nintendo too. Tbh, I can’t recall why because the Wii days were so long ago, but I didn’t make it very far in the original game. After it had been hyped as a Zelda surrogate I was always going to be disappointed. Nonetheless I’d love to try the sequel.
I can only judge from the videos I’ve seen, but Astrobot practically screams „Super Mario Galaxy“. I can’t imagine Nintendo not being a little annoyed about it. The thing is… they never milked 3D Mario dry. Galaxy 2 was the only straight up sequel, in all other cases they took long breaks between entries and every entry moved the game on significantly. Which is commendable, but also means they’re leaving ideas and potential on the table. It was overdue that someone took advantage of that. And who else if not Sony.
Sounds like it’s just not for him. As a musician I get him, part of you wants total freedom and when you’re on a job that has you constantly adjust to feedback it can get annoying. That’s when you have to decide what path to take, which he did and left.
This is the first time where none of them is very good. I was scrolling down and expecting the Japanese one to be something original. But in this case, interestingly, it looks like a reworked and messier version of the US cover. Hm.
How is any of that strange? They are busy preparing big things for Switch 2, and these low-key bits we’ve been getting are meant to entertain us in the meantime.
Ok so I am not the only person unsure if they’re going to continue & finish the game. Having played Origami, RPG and TTYD on the Switch this one is noticeably weaker.
It’s quite comprehensive though… story and characters are ‚whatever‘, no wit or funny second layer, locations all look the same, invisible walls give a constricted feeling, music is generic, art design for loading screens is ugly, and the lack of technical polish. I could go on.
So what I’m saying is, I don’t feel like this developer just needs to apply some tweaks or „get the hang of it“. It feels like the franchise is in the wrong hands.
@link3710 Does it? Many Indies are digital only, many are available immediately, and most importantly: They don't compete with first party titles in the slightest. On the contrary, it's low-key filler content for Nintendo.
Hasn't it always been the case that Nintendo's Christmas lineup is announced around late summer, sees a staggered release in fall and then Nintendo keeps quiet until after the holidays?

Hmm that's an issue I didn't have in mind. That others would try to beat Nintendo to the market. The concept is a proven success thanks to Switch 1.
Sure, it doesn't matter for us Nintendo fans, because for us it's about the unique games. But it can still hurt them in the overall market.
They should hurry up, I agree now.
