@DennisLofgren I know, but the article didn't specify that... sounds like even original game developers might not have access yet, which would be insane.
But yeah maybe you're onto something and it's a flood of old ports that Nintendo wants to avoid. Otherwise every company would probably just dump their catalog of the past 7 years onto the Switch 2, which would not be a great look if it's dominating the shelves.
@DennisLofgren I don't know, "months" might be true for ports, but developing AAA games from the ground up takes years. If it is true that those studios still don't have dev kits that would actually be catastrophic.
@Clammy I agree on that. Considering how they defended the hefty price hike (from 60€ up to 90€ in Europe): “the game is worth it”, I’d disagree. It’s by no means bad, but the longevity won’t be there for me, and the element that promised to justify the inflated price - the open world - is totally not what you’d have thought.
I think this generation is going to start properly for me with Zelda or 3D Mario.
@HalBailman All good, and I saw that you’re from Australia which is close-ish to Japan (or far from almost everywhere 😶). Just saying that afaik only a small percentage of Europeans ever visit Japan, as it’s a really pricey trip, super long flight and most of all expensive stay. I was lucky to have a friend who emigrated to Tokyo so I could stay with them, and I had business in Seoul anyway, that’s why I got to spend one week in Tokyo.
@Lofoten I know what you mean, but historically that's not what these events seek to award. It's seen in relation to the show - "What was the most talked about game, what was the biggest sensation, who stole the show".
That's what E3 did at least. I admit that Gamescom is being more muddy, theirs is somewhere in between the above and GOTY awards. I don't think they've really thought this through yet and so far their awards are not widely anticipated or cited either.
I think most here failed to understand that DK Bananza won the more prestigious award, actually. It won "Best Gameplay" OVERALL, beating out the competition across all consoles and PC and mobile. MK World merely won within the confines of "Best Switch Game". My interpretation is that they wanted to award both games (as they are both worthy), so for balance they gave MK the other one.
Oh and the accusations here are ludicrous. Plenty of journalists praised MK World and it's selling like crazy. Just because you (and me) are lukewarm to it doesn't mean it's a failure.
@Liam_Doolan "Surely a game that is not yet out cannot win?"
Why? I'd even argue that freshly unveiled games are the more interesting part of a conference. Gamescom is still very light on that front, but go back to E3. Who cared about previously released games at E3? It was ALL about just unveiled games. This is not an end-of-year GOTY award of a magazine.
@HalBailman Well visiting Japan is fantastic, but depending on where you live it's something you won't get to do in your lifetime cause it's so far away and expensive. Every continent needs at least one big event imo because the majority of visitors aren't going to be long distance flyers.
@timp29 It's curious, I can still play hours of "Double Dash", but "World" failed to reignite the MK fever after I was tired of "8". The two games feel too similar to each other. And I miss the focus on tight turns and drifting. I'm surely alone in this, but some of my favourite "World" courses are the SNES Circuits... suddenly you're back to chaining drifts and perfecting corners and powerslides. That's what I liked best about MK (and what peaked with "Double Dash").
@antdickens Ah gotcha, I thought you travelled to and from Munich.
Well yeah DB kinda broke down since 2020 due to decades of neglect, it's now the most unreliable national railway in all of Europe. Literally. They're now approaching the necessary repairs but that means it's going to get even worse before it can improve.
@antdickens The train connection between Frankfurt and Cologne is the fastest in all of Germany, it goes 300 km/h and takes 50 mins. It’s as @KeeperBvK says, Frankfurt is basically another airport option for Cologne. Often the best option as FFM is the biggest and best connected airport we have.
Munich is large too but almost the opposite end of the country, getting there by train takes half a day.
They must be doing something right if 350.000 people make a pilgrimage... it's simply not for everyone 🤷♂️
I'm impressed that Cologne quietly became the world's largest video game convention 😳 But yeah Wikipedia says E3 had 70.000 visitors in their biggest year, so Gamescom seems to be on another scale altogether. Even Tokyo Game Show never had that many visitors. Interesting.
I've been there once (living close by) many years ago, I gotta say it was too noisy and exhausting for my taste. But that's me, my age and trade fairs in general. Bit of an assault on your senses.
Looking forward to the Digital Foundry report though, they likely learned some interesting bits behind closed doors.
Wasn’t Acclaim quite bad back in the days? I remember Airwolf on the NES. I mean, they should have no trouble rising to their old standards, on a positive note ✨
Just played 30 mins of the demo. Erm… the problem is neither the HD—2D nor the name nor the digital distribution. The game is just very uninspired and by-the-numbers.
The chatty fairy (and hero’s own mutterings) break any atmosphere, the game doesn’t take itself seriously enough. Compare that complete lack of purpose and urgency to the exposition of A Link to the Past…
@Nintendo4Sonic Ok, I understand. Tbh I don’t care for the combat anyway, I fondly remember the old Indy point & click adventures… does this one feel like an engaging linear story / narrative / setting at least?
Hmm no that doesn’t look so great. They should have used more of the teaser aesthetic: Some depth of field and those flower ‘particles’. This looks very random and just like every previous Kirby cover.
See! I’ve been calling this one for months - always puzzled me that not many people around here seemed to care. But this is a great game apparently, holds an 88% score on Metacritic. And won GOTY at some places.
I thought the game looks great, however the presentation had bit of a weird structure, no? He returned to the topic of the character roster like 3 times, same with machines. Instead of one block for each aspect.
And I was a bit overwhelmed with the details, weapons and extras and specials and copy… and that was just the main mode.
Nevertheless, I am optimistic that the core mechanics are fun.
Now that is great news! I wasn't expecting it anymore, not at all. Definitely buying And yeah I echo that we should get I and II first, for those of us new to the series.
I wonder if a new instalment is due anytime soon. Kinda unusual that they released two remakes back to back, and that was only recently, so they might wanna rest the series for a while, sadly. At least Origami King came out 5 years ago already (and was brilliant, possibly the best entry yet together with TTYD).
@Samalik Yeah sure. But I’d go crazy if my gaming was so modular and complicated. One console per cycle is all I want.
Also - PC gaming has become insanely expensive! Thanks to Bitcoin and AI I hear. People spend thousands on their graphics cards alone… that’s a different ballgame from any console.
I think this is cool. For the most part I think Nintendo is a good entity and consider what they create art and valuable.
I’m keeping the kids from the actual games for a few more years, because I don’t want them to use screens at all at a young age. But picture books and plushies, sure.
@Andee Yeah the graphics card coverage is so mind-numbing boring, it’s when I fall asleep 100%. “I guess with a TX 4059 you’re golden or even a TX 4036 maybe” “Yeah yeah and if you think about it, Radeon CMZ 3021 was incredible value” “true but AMD have to step up their game, BTX 1034 is getting long in the tooth with only 4096 Cuda cores” oh god it’s so boring. Kinda not looking forward to more of THAT
That’s exciting and really interesting in the bigger picture of media in this age. Watch the video. They’ve grown their fan base organically and aren’t willing to compromise their work for any kind of search engine or social media optimized promo.
Crucially they’re not ‘content creators’ first but experts who love what they do.
Only slight downer is that they define their goals as “more PC coverage, more Retro coverage; we’re doing fine with consoles”. Personally I’m most interested in consoles and least in PC, but as long as they don’t reduce console coverage it’s ok. Going to start supporting the channel directly now.
@The_Nintend_Pedant Hey, yes I understand what you mean. They're making the games appear tiny and cute even when the originals weren't meant that way. But I must say I still quite like the visual style, it's a translation of "SNES" into "modern" that works. And it works way better than most other routes, Bravely Default looks worse, 3D overhaul of Mana looks horrible, etc...
And one other game that uses this effect (not just vignette, but also strong depth of field) is the Link's Awakening remake, which I think looks fantastic.
@Spider-Kev That’s not true. 3D Mario All Stars gave us Mario Galaxy in HD, which was well worth the money for me (favourite game ever, possibly). Mario 64 and especially Sunshine were underwhelming, that’s true.
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Playable At Fan Expo Canada This Month
Wow, not merely playable but BEYOND playable! Game must be more than ready to ship, any longer and the game gets too good 😓
(I know it’s standard in US papers but I don’t understand this convention of capitalizing every word. Sometimes it’s borderline illegible. Also, how about quote unquote for the game’s title?).
When they unveiled the console together with a new Mario Kart I didn’t immediately figure what this would mean: no sign of mainline Mario or Zelda or similar for the first 1-2 years. I haven’t played the system much (and that’s also down to not having a lot of spare time), but I’d been hoping for more first party hype.
That they’re making it action RPG instead of turn based does make all the difference indeed. Even though I loved Octopath 1 I have yet to play much of part 2, just because turn based battles are not my thing in the end. This here is very intriguing.
What a game. Even if it was running flawlessly and looked like a dream it sounds absolutely stupid (for my taste, to each their own. "Wasting Time" is my least favourite video game genre.).
You know what's funny... the other day I checked if "Gollum" was ever finished and released for Switch. It wasn't. I'd MUCH rather play that, even thought the reviews were harsh.

Weird that DF don't offer up their own speculation as to why Nintendo might be doing this. I can't think of a good reason.
Re: Mario Kart World Wins "Best Nintendo Switch 2 Game" Of Gamescom 2025
@Clammy I wouldn't mind a Mario Wonder 2, I completed the first one 100% and had a lot of fun But yeah no substitution for a grand 3D adventure.
