Surprise! The N64 App Is Also Getting Some Enhancements On Switch 2

Nice! This is a welcome improvement. Button remapping is especially huge, but the rewind feature is nice, too. (Now I don't even NEED the Ocarina in Majora's Mask, suckers!) I've never seen the appeal of CRT filters, though. I like my video games the same way I like to eat bread--without fuzz all over it.

Now, they just need to update it so N64 games are compatible with the Save Data Pak and NSO Game Boy Color connectivity.

I think I missed it, will the Gamecube NSO app have rewind?

Thank goodness! The old Rare FPS games are really tough to go back to because of us controls, so this helps a lot

Rewind feature? Oh HECK YEAH! I never understood why the N64 app lacked rewind, so that’ll be good. Using save states multiple times was repetitive, I remember having to use it so many times when I got to Rusty Bucket Bay when playing Banjo and it was so repetitive haha, so that’s a nice addition.

Button remapping should be for every classic console. I mean why the hell can't I use the much more comfortable ZL and ZR buttons on SNES games?

Also give me the option to turn off those ugly ass borders!

Don't really care about the rewind but I'm way down for the CRT filter. Been wanting to play Harvest Moon 64 looking that way again for a long time.

This is actually really huge news.

I’m at that fine line right now where it’s like, “do I keep my preorder for Analogue 3D or do I cancel and just stick with N64 NSO.”
I’d love the cancel my subscription because I absolutely detest subscriptions but also… this is a really good deal and they’re adding some really good games and features. That button remapping is a literal game changer for FPS because now I don’t have to mess with things in the global Switch settings to make a specific N64 FPS scheme. I know this new way will function mostly the same but it’s just more streamlined and considered.
If they drop Bomberman 64 and Castlevania 64, I’m really going to be in a hard spot.

I'll be excited if and when they decide to put Diddy Kong Racing on there

The crt filter for the snes is nice so I trust them on that. I'm still not sure if I'll get the console right away though as it's simply more expensive than I expected.

@SBandy1 Those borders are the reason I don't play retro games on NSO ^^' Why can't it just be black and without having to see your user icon all the time..

I wonder if Nintendo is going to let us download individual games instead of the app downloading every single game when you install the apps.

I would guess they will let you download individual games with GameCube as they take up more space then the older consoles.

YES! This has been my biggest complaint about the N64 games on NSO to date, and I honestly never thought that we would get this. As an old man in my 40's, I want to experience these games like I originally experienced them. N64 games gave the illusion of more rounded, robust polygon characters and environments because of the blur/bleed that these screens gave. They just don't look right on modern, crisp screens, more like paper maché. Not everything looks better in HD! I am super excited about this!

Not sure if I think gamecube really needs a crt filter ( that gen was the first when hd was alive, wasn;t it, they look amazing on my wiiU), but still a nice option... and good that they keep developing their other apps..

Finally, button remapping! The default is just horrible to use.

As much as some people pooh-pooh the CRT filter, I think it's a great, nostalgic option for consoles from N64 on back, if not GCN. Rewind could be pretty useful for certain areas in Banjo games.

Ashame that they locked GameCube behind a whole new console.. so I’m guessing if Dreamcast get added to NSO it will probably be Switch 2 exclusive… lame

I'm really happy about the rewind feature. I might try and get a perfect on every Pilotwings 64 level now. It always annoyed me when you got everything else right but was slightly off on your landing.

I'd prefer a modern remake, basically the same game with Mario kart 8 style graphics but I think, if anything we're more likely to just get the Original on NSO

Should had put these on the Switch 1 version of the app too. I don't get how these are purposely held for Switch 2 when Switch 1 could likely handle em just fine.

I’d still like to see a smoothing option added on the nes and snes. When I hacked my snes mini I did the function that kept their scan line filter but removed the lines to just retain the smoothing that it used and the games looked fantastic.

This means I can finally play Star Fox!!!! Thank you nintendo

@tomwinsagain Precisely! I can't play NSO games on my Switch OLED because the borders get burned in! I wish they'd make the games take up as much space on the screen as possible.

@NintendoWife I agree! It makes no sense that I'm stuck playing Starfox 2 on NSO at 15-20 fps, when if they made it harness the full power of the Switch, it would run at a buttery smooth 60fps. I wish Nintendo would do that, even if it's just an option.

Yay, button remapping and rewind...now I just hope they let us do SINGLE BUTTON REWIND, aka allow us to remap a button to be rewind, like L, which is rarely if ever used on N64 anyway

Nintendo: No. Only the Switch 2 is mighty enough to handle this feature.

For all of my jadedness, I am REALLY happy that we're finally getting the ability to remap the buttons on the N64 app.
I've said it over and over again that Nintendo's default unchangeable button scheme makes most N64 games completely unplayable without the N64 pad (i.e. unplayable in handheld). Seeing them announce remappable buttons in the Switch 2 Gamecube reveal (and extrapolating that to the N64) was the one pure undiluted moment of joy for me in the Direct.

Do we know if the remapping features will also come to Switch?

@OtterXPT in my opinion, the paper maché look comes mostly from the fact that the emulator is using a high resolution to render the low-poly models, not so much LED vs CRT. The option to render in original resolution would be a really great way to provide a true-to-the-original experience. It would remove all of the nagging little stuff like glitchy edge transparencies on textures which were never designed to be stretched out that far, and make the 2D GUI / menu elements actually feel like they belong alongside the 3D stuff behind it.

Yeah I won’t lie I abused it for DKC II recently.

I beat it on SNES as a kid back in the 90s and I do not have that level of patience as a 35 year old now.

Hallelujah, rewind and godforsaken button mapping. Half the reason I can't enjoy N64 games on NSO comfortably enough.

CRT filters can be good but it depends on implementation. It's much more than scanlines. Good ones can be very costly.

For me I'm particularly in favour of CRT filters for N64 and PSX. Older titles can look quite nice with crisp pixels and later 3D gens benefit from higher rendering but early 3D really benefits from all the bleed effects to cover up the tiny polygon counts and blend those heavily used 2D sprites/billboards and prerendered backdrops with polygons.

Fiddling around with this update now and Kirby 64 really does feel so much more, like, playable not having to rely on the awkward Joycon D-pad and being able to use the stick instead. N64 controller's still the ideal way to play it but not exactly a great fit for handheld.

The button remapping will help me so much! Can't use the things the normal way, so you have to get creative! 😂🤎

Finally Goldeneye, Banjo Kazooie, Perfect Dark, Jet Force Gemini and other games will be playable in handheld!

All I want is to have all the games in one app, all the games should be available in the rated M version of the thing.

@Moonlessky You can boot them up from the Nintendo Switch Online app, they're all there under the Nintendo Classics tab.

Rewind? No thanks. I love to be brutally punished and having to replay the same bits over and over. It makes the feeling of accomplishment so much more satisfying.

Wish they had just one app with a menu to choose platform it’s pretty annoying as it currently is

@MrYuzhai Yeah, it's okay when it's only nes, snes and gameboy advance, but now it really cluttered the homescreen since it can only hold so many game icons 😕

With the update, the ability to remap Nintendo 64 controls was added to all versions of the emulator, not just the Switch 2 version! Able to remap N64 controls on the Switch 1, now. Very happy about this.

@TrixieSparkle I'm pleasantly surprised by this. SW1 users aren't getting the CRT filters but that's NBD.
