Re: Shigeru Miyamoto and Yugo Hayashi Discuss Star Fox Zero's Development

@-DEMISE-, Well, a quick search on Google and vocabulary.com says "Intuitive means having the ability to understand or know something without any direct evidence or reasoning process."
Emphasis on "ability." However, you're describing it like the intuitive person doesn't feel it necessary to justify with reason, and that's actually a fair argument. In the context of philosophy, it doesn't matter, because believers of intuition believe they have the ability to know the facts of life by just feeling them. If you believe you can know truth through intuition and not rational thought, that's your way of thinking. There's really no difference between our definitions.

In either case, an intuitive thing requires no thought process, and that can describe an electronic system easily, if you broaden the definition a bit.

Re: Shigeru Miyamoto and Yugo Hayashi Discuss Star Fox Zero's Development

Nicolai

@-DEMISE- Yeah, that's pretty much what i said. Information is normally gained through learning it, or "rational thought" as you said. Intuition is knowing something without having to think about it rationally. The term works well for electronics' interfaces, because an intuitive interface is an interface you don't have to think about very much, because the control scheme is usually gearing around what an average mind's first conclusion will be, such as swinging a remote in order to swing a sword in a game. If you have to spend time with a userface to learn it, like Star Fox Zero's, then your mind had to think about it first in order to figure it out, and then it can be learned. Not technically intuitive.

This is all completely removed from my opinion of the game. I think Star Fox Zero has been great so far. It just bugs me when people throw words like that around.

Re: Shigeru Miyamoto and Yugo Hayashi Discuss Star Fox Zero's Development

I don't think people here know what the word "intuitive" means. To be intuitive is to be known without being learned first. If you say "It is intuitive, you just have to spend a few hours learning the ropes," then it isn't intuitive. Wii Sports is intuitive. Most people find meaning in life through intuition. Driving a car, after weeks of drivers ed and practice, is not intuitive.

Re: The Legend of Zelda and Sonic the Hedgehog Are Inducted Into the World Video Game Hall of Fame

Nicolai

I can't help but think "It hasn't already?" but it seems like it started just last year. I guess they gotta take it one year at a time. I'm sure Pokémon will be inducted next year; it's cultural relevance is beyond any other game franchise, and the scope in which it explored the monster capturing gameplay was brand new back in the day. Plus, I think it was possibly the first Game Boy game to use the Link cable, or something like that. I dunno, any Pokémon trivia buff will tell you its wide range of innovations better than I can.

Re: Soapbox: Game Reviews Always Need a Final Score

Nicolai

No, it s all still subjective. Even information in the review such as duration, content, controls, and difficulty are all subjective, and you still subjectively decide how it all affects your score, however methodical your process is. And all the number score does is make some people think it is more objective than it is.

However, i do appreciate when a review is as detailed as possible, picking apart specific things the reviewer enjoyed or was frustrated with, because this gives me an opportunity to decide if I may or may not feel the same way. I happen to like learning new control schemes, steep difficulty curves, and deviations from previous iterations of a franchise. However, that doesn't mean comments like "this control scheme is different," "This game throws you in the fire right away," and "this game is too similar to (blank)" aren't the reviewer's opinions. Unless you're only linking Digital Foundry's framerate tests and posting the amount of hours clocked on your Wii U after beating/completing it, or how many times you failed a challenge, you're probably saying how long it is, how hard it is, and whether the framerate bothered you or not.

Re: Callie and Marie Join a New Splatoon amiibo Range on 8th July

Nicolai

Hooray! This makes up for all of the other crap that came out of the end-of-the-fiscal-year stuff! They look really good!

Darn it, it's been a while, but it's back to hitting refresh on my phone a billion times.

But, on the plus side, more Squid Sister Songs for my YouTube channel!

0:58 Marie just became my favorite Squid Sister.

Re: Feature: How One Man Saved Kyoto - And Video Games - From The Atomic Bomb

Nicolai

To be clear, primarily what I am offended by is the article's subtitle "Nintendo fans have a lot to thank Henry Stimson for," when I don't feel comfortable thanking a man who still had a hand in killing hundreds of thousands of people, regardless of who's fate was decided. I don't care what you're proposing we thank him for. It's like thanking Stalin for not killing the guy who invented Tetris when he was a baby.

And yes, I did read the whole article. @Damo, it's childish to assume everyone who disagrees with you as not having read your article.

Re: Feature: How One Man Saved Kyoto - And Video Games - From The Atomic Bomb

Nicolai

@Damo, I still think it's a little insensitive, even if you do bring to light the cultural loss from Nagasaki and Hiroshima. I can hardly thank the man for having any sort of hand in city annihilation, nor can I blame him. It doesn't matter what cities he chose, it just feels weird seeing an article asking me to praise him for his actions, when hundreds of thousands of people still died as a result.

Re: A New Patch for FreezeME is on the Way in North America

Nicolai

I didn't like this game when I played it. It was mostly the little things, like the bugs, the lack of animation when "Z-targeting," the annoying way he gargles the npc's voices, the occasional non-interactive surface, the worlds that seem a little too wide-open for how much stuff is in them, the bad music. Maybe some of these things are fixed now, or maybe I'm just expecting too much out of a one-man development team, but I don't recommend this game, at least for those that are picky with their 3D platformers.

I'll at least be glad to finally move this game from my system memory, though, when these updates come to America.

Re: Looks Like Nintendo's Familiar Red And White Branding Is Back For Good

Nicolai

Good, good. (shuffles hands together) Red will strike a chord of fear in hearts of Nintendo's enemies. Long live the new emperor... er, I mean president!

In all seriousness, though, the classic look is good. The new NX doesn't have to have a mainly red coating like a cardinal, but it can be it's secondary color. Maybe a red-on-white look, like the original famicom, or Japanese flag. Red on black would be sexy as heck (maybe a little too sexy).

Re: Poll: What Do You Think of My Nintendo and Miitomo?

Nicolai

It's interesting how popular the "If Nintendo makes the right moves" options are. It goes to show how little faith people have in Nintendo's decision-making, which is definitely understandable.

I'm not sure about Miitomo's long-term appeal. It seems like something we'll all get bored of in a month, two months tops.

Re: Nintendo NX 'Controller' Image Confirmed Fake By Its Creator

Nicolai

I still haven't found any proof that this guy didn't reverse-photoshop the background image. It's unlikely, and and the first picture did look photoshopped, but I'm not 100% certain it's fake. If it's that easy to photoshop a whole new 3D design, it must be just as easy to edit it out. I'd say I'm about 90% it's fake, 10% it's an early prototype that will eventually include buttons and handles.

The creator of the video doesn't claim responsibility for the other images. He says he doesn't know who did them, but suggests they might have used a 3D printer based on his design. Is it really that easy to do?

Re: Poll: Are You Ready to Download More of Your Retail Games From the eShop?

Nicolai

I've been retail-only for a while, but lately I've been considering going digital-only next generation. I'd hate to spend money on an ugly external hard-drive, especially if it requires its own plug, but I'm starting to wonder how I'm going to haul my games everywhere in a few generations if I keep buying cases. Nintendo understandably is pushing digital purchases pretty heavily lately. I guess we'll see how the NX handles it.

Re: Splatoon Producer on Pre-Release Concerns and the Future of the Franchise

Nicolai

I would love to see a little bit of time before a sequel on the NX. Splatoon is still a new game in my eyes, and I'm perfectly content with enjoying what I have for a few years, rather than being forced to switch over soon due to server changes for just a few new features at full price.

As for features, I'd love to see local multiplayer. The Gamepad was a great control scheme, but if I have to be honest, the added touch-screen features aren't exactly mandatory. I don't think we'd be missing out on that much if everyone was on rubber-banded Pro controllers. It would be awesome, too, if the NX was powerful enough to handle 8 people at a time in a game like this.

Re: Site News: Welcome To The Brand New Nintendo Life!

Nicolai

I'm not a huge fan of this. Lists are so nice and clean; I don't know why the trend today is to place large rectangular images in random places. The overall look is so basic. Also, now I have no way to view desktop mode on mobile. I hope there aren't many missing features in that version. Right away, I see that in the Forums/Watched Topics page, It doesn't tell me how long ago a post was made and by whom for each topic.

I really like the addition of a notification box, though! That should come in handy. Looking at forum topics in the home page is nicer too; now all of the most recent topics are right there along with all of the links I need on the left... in the desktop version. Please, Nintendolife, let us use the desktop version on mobile for those like me who use this site all the time from their phone using Wi-Fi.
