It's time once again for the Japanese Media Create charts, and this week is particularly fascinating as it pitches the Pokémon and Digimon brands against each other.
The good news for Pokémon fans is that the franchise came out on top in the head to head, with Pokkén Tournament seizing top spot for Wii U ahead of Digimon World: Next Order on Vita. The top five has three games on Nintendo systems, overall, with the evergreen Splatoon still hanging around - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD's sales have fallen away quickly in its second week in Japan, however, registering just 7,705 units. Results are below with lifetime sales in brackets.
- [Wii U] Pokken Tournament (Pokemon, 03/18/16) – 69,675 (New)
- [PSV] Digimon World: Next Order (Bandai Namco, 03/17/16) – 64,218 (New)
- [PS4] The Division (Ubisoft, 03/10/16) – 23,130 (103,833)
- [3DS] Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Nintendo, 02/18/16) – 12,078 (107,646)
- [Wii U] Splatoon (Nintendo, 05/28/15) – 10,081 (1,301,500)
- [PSV] Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition (SCE, 03/19/15) – 9,136 (702,183)
- [PS4] Battlefield 4 Premium Edition (EA Best Hits) (Elecronic Arts, 03/17/16) – 8,771 (New)
- [PSV] Gundam Breaker 3 (Bandai Namco, 03/03/16) – 8,741 (100,8000)
- [Wii U] The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD (Nintendo, 03/10/16) – 7,705 (59,987)
- [PSV] Summon Night 6: Lost Borders (Bandai Namco, 03/10/16) – 7,144 (47,220)
- [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Happy Price Selection) (Nintendo, 03/17/16) – 6,931 (New)
- [Wii U] Super Mario Maker (Nintendo, 09/10/15) – 6,297 (822,312)
- [PS4] Gundam Breaker 3 (Bandai Namco, 03/03/16) – 6,152 (83,892)
- [PS4] Senran Kagura: Estival Versus Sakura Edition (Marvelous, 03/17/16) – 6,089 (New)
- [PSV] Attack on Titan (Koei Tecmo, 02/18/16) – 5,862 (110,525)
- [3DS] Doraemon Shin Nobita no Nihon Tanjou (FuRyu, 03/03/16) – 5,018 (18,893)
- [PSV] Wand of Fortune R (Idea Factory, 03/17/16) – 4,470 (New)
- [3DS] Monster Hunter Generations (Capcom, 11/27/15) – 4,391 (2,715,326)
- [3DS] Yo-kai Watch Busters: Red Cat Team / White Dog Squad (Level-5, 07/11/15) – 4,360 (2,232,744)
- [PS4] Yakuza 0 (New Price Version) (Sega, 03/17/16) – 4,257 (New)
Moving on to hardware, Pokkén Tournament's launch has helped the Wii U climb back up to five figures and fourth place, with a little under triple the previous week's sales. The 3DS 'family' of platforms is still second overall behind PS4, with the New 3DS LL (XL) narrowly behind the Vita. Results are below with last week's sales in brackets.
- PlayStation 4 – 28,370 (27,341)
- PlayStation Vita – 19,028 (20,810)
- New 3DS LL – 18,353 (17,998)
- Wii U – 12,998 (4,629)
- New 3DS – 5,142 (5,832)
- 3DS – 2,187 (2,223)
- PlayStation 3 – 1,462 (1,375)
- 3DS LL – 370 (492)
- Xbox One – 91 (77)
A positive debut for the Pokémon fighting game, in any case, in the process helping to shift some extra systems. We'll see how its momentum holds up in next week's results.

This is really nice to see. I love both franchises but Digimon has a special place in my heart.
In other news, I have way too much free time in my hands as you can see below (Caution: loud screaming and slight profanity so make sure you dont open it with your family or boss next to you).

Worth the hour or so I spend making it because I love this game (and it made me go back and play "Tekken Tag Tournament 2Wii U Edition" as well)
I think Wii U will drop to 4 figures next week because of the Nikkei report.
@Grumblevolcano or increase in sales now that people think there won't be any more of them.
inb4 the "Digimon still exists?" comments.
@Grumblevolcano
The bump is probably because of the Pokken Wii U bundles. I expect sales to be back at 2K next week.
@Shiryu
That ending...
Japan: "Does it have the Pokemans."
Nintendo: "Yes, but-"
Japan: "Say no more bby."
@Jamotello Not really, people would (rightly) assume that NX has Wii U backwards compatibility.
@Luffymcduck Have the more artsy sequel: https://youtu.be/Y07tpGE3ouU
Poor Xbox One
Either way Bandai Namco's is just swimming in the money, hah.
God the Xbox one sold under 100 units?! In both weeks of figures! While I like Nintnedo the most I've also loved my Xbox one it's had plenty of great games and still to this day I have fun on halo 5! Ps4 is also great and I'm glad to see it's doing really well! Seriously considering getting the VR which in my opinion ceases the possibility of the ps4.5 as VR is the price of a new console! I also think it'll be the best selling VR!
To think Pokken was originally pitched to be a Taiko no tatsujin game. The Taikoka in me is sad but the FG fan in me is like "MOAR POKKEN!". Fighting game me is enjoying this game very much.
Slightly unrelated but man do I hope Cyber Sleuth does well so we get more Digimon games like Cyber Sleuth (basically Pokemon gameplay but with Digimon, which is a concept I've been wanting my whole life).
@DoctorOverbuild It's been selling like that since the Xbox One came to light in Japan. The Xbox One isn't exactly a popular console overseas.
@Captain_Toad I know I was just using these figures as an example I'm just disappointed it's not doing as well overseas!

We have been having a blast playing Pokken Tournament such an AWESOME game I hope it gets a ton of sells such a great title highly recommended if you have a Wii U, it's a shame Nintendo has never dropped the price of Wii U I think that has been the biggest problem for them to shift more units .,, Nintendo the Wii U is so over due for a price reduction I mean seriously come on.
Very good indeed
Pokken Tournament is definitely a great game. I am not a fan of Tekken, nor am I very good at fighting games, but Pokken Tournament is so easy to learn (and difficult to master). The tutorials and easy control scheme have really helped me learn combos and high/low blocking and countering, etc. It's such a great and fun game.
Look at Twilight Princess HD go!
'Summon Night 6: Lost Borders' hmm, wonder if there is any English text in this.
Still waiting on my PSP version of Summon Night 5 to arrive. Been nearly a year now lol.
@Jamotello I was thinking that too. With the report I would say a lot of people will pick one up over the coming weeks so we will see some bumps in sales both East and West. Then it will die down a lot, until more rumors circulate that Nintendo are gonna finish production in December again and it will bump again. Then it's whatever is left in stores from then on until they are all bought up.
So glad and happy with my WiiU and all the games I have. Sure it sat around dust collecting for long stretches of time but I'd never sell my launch day system. And I have a feeling it will be the next dreamcast, as in everyone will want the games but they will hold their value because you can't 'technically' copy the games as easily as dreamcast games.
That's why I always buy the little known games in the WiiU library. proud face
On a side note, the ps3, that's sold about 85mollion now (could be higher as that number is from last summer'ish) and as far as I know Sony haven't stopped production of it yet. I think the ps3 could eventually pass the Wii in lifetime sales, over 102million or something. People still buy new ps3 systems all over the world. Especially now when it's cheap new, and games are super cheap and everywhere. All you have to do is buy now, update all your games and your ps3 is future proofed.
Didn't the ps2 finish production in 2013/14?
Kinda just a thought I sometimes think about
Splatoon just don't quit! If they don't make this into a franchise I will be shocked.
Oh yakuza (Ryu Ga Gotoku) will you please stay away from my bank account?
Great news about the Wii u sales but still didn't surpass the mighty PS4 and PS Vita. Talking about ps vita - I was in Japan a couple of weeks ago, I spotted two passengers on the train playing their ps vitas. One of them was playing minecraft and the other was playing dragon quest builders. They really dig building games there. Didn't see anyone playing on 3ds but I managed to get 10 street passes 😁👍in 2 days where as I only get at least 1 in two weeks in Australia😒
@Grumblevolcano Why is that? I thought everybody agreed that the NX can only succeed if it moves away from PowerPC and (finally) embraces x86...which would mean backwards compatibility is out of the question.
Welp, hopefully the game goes swell enough to get future updates and DLC!
@Tsurii I'd be happy with any Digimon rpg coming to the west. Would have to replay the original World to tell you whether I'd rather have a World or a Story.
Pokkén Tournament (Wii U) also sold more than Street Fighter V, which is also pretty impressive.
@BigBabyPeach Because it's an expectation. The Wii had GC support, the Wii U had Wii support, the GBA had GB/GBC support, the DS had GBA support, the 3DS had DS/DSi support. You can continue that list for Microsoft and Sony too excluding the current gen of which even then Microsoft has a kind of backwards compatibility on XB1. Even smartphones and tablets have backwards compatibility when you upgrade provided you're on the same OS (e.g. Android, iOS). That's why I think people would expect NX to have backwards compatibility. Of course NX may not have it of which you'll need a Wii U to play lots of those great games but of course this is just speculation until NX is actually revealed.
@Grumblevolcano Well, all I know is that if Nintendo makes another console based on PowerPC, you can kiss 3rd party support goodbye again. If recent rumors are to be believed though and the NX is easy to develop for and port games to, then it's pretty much guaranteed to be x86. I think Nintendo fans will just have to bite the bullet in exchange for progress this time. That said, maybe they could do the kind of BC like on XB1, but I doubt they will.
@Grumblevolcano One correction, the DS did not have GB/GBC support. It lacked the needed processor to play the games and the slot was incompatible. That said, the DS was a killer system.
I am glad that the Wii U is getting a boost, but nothing is going to save it from it's fate of being the worse console Nintendo produced outside of the Virtual Boy. However, I think given enough time it will join the ranks of the Dreamcast as a great console that was vastly under-appreciated and the only home of some gaming gems.
@Darknyht Oops, corrected the error.
Good. Nobody wants Digimon anyway. It only was on the chart because nothing else was appealing in that genre.
Pikachu is doing the nazi salute O.o
i got the game because i canceld some things and suddenly had the money for it,not expecting much at all but i really like it,its a solid fighting game and the pokemon setting is a nice plus,good to see it sells well
I'd play the Digimon game if it was released on 3DS, but Vita only doesn't work for me. Plus, there's still the Digimon MMO.
Pokken is doing fine in Japan, but I'm more curious about the worldwide release.
@thedillon23 Wrong hand..
Does this news mean the WiiU is no longer rare in Japan?
@Seacliff Pokken got 3rd in the Europeon multiplatform sales (ie ps4/xb1 versions combined) and 5th in the single platform sales (ie ps4 and xb1 versions as separate entities). NL reported on it a few days ago. I don't know US numbers since I don't have time to check many sites and NL never reports US numbers
@Romeo-75
I have been calling for the same thing. 2$50.00 with a attractive bundle! However I think the game pad is very expensive to make. That is why nintendo is hesitant.
@ASonic3582 I think that was for the UK chart
Didn't even know about this Digimon game. Haven't even thought about Digimon in years.
While I'm happy for Pokken Tournament, I'm also glad the newest Digimon game is doing fine as well. And I hope it gets released in the west like Cyber Sleuth (which is the reason I bought a PSTV, just to play this game). I'm still bitter neither of the Digimon World Re:Digitize versions got released in English (at least the fans made a great translation of the PSP ver, but I'd like to play this game on my 3DS...), so I hope Next Order gets a better treatment.
