Many of you are no doubt looking forward to the launch of Super Meat Boy on Wii U, which was recently reported to be happening "very soon". The title has had something of a troubled release history with Nintendo platforms; it was initially set to release on Wiiware, before getting cancelled due to file size restrictions. Fortunately, no such issues exist on the new and improved Nintendo eShop, and it has now been announced that the game will be launching on 12th May in both Europe and North America.
The announcement came via a press release from Team Meat, where it was also revealed that there will be a slight launch discount to encourage early adopters. The game will be available for $14 / £13 / €14 until 26th May, which is 20 percent cheaper than the game's official price. Also there was a part of the announcement that seemed to tease that a 3DS version in the works. After discussing all the platforms the game is already available on, the press release mentioned that "only the 3DS will be missing (but maybe not for too long )" Make of that what you will, but it looks like 3DS owners might not have to sit this one out for much longer.
What do you think? Will you be buying this one for the Wii U? Would you like to see it on 3DS? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
I wonder what characters will it include?
I suppose no ninty exclusives though...
Better late than never?
Great game, would get it only if it was at a cheaper price, considering I already played this game before on other platforms
It's nice that Europe's not geting shunned this time around. I'll most likely get it.
Ha, that'd be cool if they had some Nintendo characters playable.
Cool but I'm a 3DS gamer so I think I'm going to wait for the 3DS version.
@DiscoGentleman the main reason this is happening is due to how well binding of Isaac has done on the wiiu. It was also an older release so I think it will do fine.
Is Nicalis behind this one as well? If so, well, better hold tight until all bugs are fixed (maybe two months?) and THEN get it. Oh, and 3DS? New 3DS exclusive, with as many bugs as possible and no possibility for further improvements on the game.
Yes, I'm still pissed off at them for not bringing Afterbirth to N3DS.
Was expecting this to be in late summer but I'll take it.
Would be cool if it had cross platform purchase enabled. But since Nicalis has been handling part of the deal, I doubt it.
Really cool to finally have SMB on Nintendo platforms where it belongs. Shame that the soundtrack is the crappy new one...
I willing to bet it will be exclusive to the New model. Not sure if I need to play this game.
So I just read about not using the original music. Sucks then.
I just listened to the 5th anniversary soundtrack and it doesn't hold a candle to the amazing work Danny Baranowski did. (Not that the new OST sucks completely, but it's pretty underwhelming)
Shame though. I suppose I'll give the game a spin on the 3DS (when it eventually releases there)
While i appreciate platformers, i found this game got old pretty quickly. One hit and you're dead just isn't fun.
I would love to give Nintendo a pass on that one but I can't. It's too little too late. Not sure however what were the factors for smb being so late on this system.
These things needed to happen much faster. I mean seriously, how can you have a multi million seller like mine craft so late on your system?
I'm really pessimistic about Nintendo's future. It's just too many things they have to get right until March.
Proper Online capabilities
Industry standard account system (I will never buy ALTTP or SMW again!!)
Cross play (not knowing what the new system is about though)
Proper 3rd party support
If they even lacking behind one of these things due to the usual Nintendo quirkiness they will, unlike the WiiU, getting trashed in video game media. They have to be up to standard. Heck a long time ago they have been the standard.
Just my opinion btw.
Already got it on Steam and no exclusive stuff can convince me to buy a second time.
They want 14 US for a game this old at launch, and 17.50 after? I'd love to pick it up but with the exchange rate it'll be probably 16 then 20 dollars here in Canada, not worth it. I have it for PC but it glitched like crazy on my old laptop, i'll set it up on my new one and be good. A game this old should be under 10 dollars, that's just stupid pricing.
@Prizm I agree, I was never a huge fan of this. It's fun for a little while, but the trial and error gameplay gets really old the farther in you get.
Version with the worst music? Pass.
Xbox 360 version or PC version has the original music tracks which are amazing.
14€? I'll stay with the Humble Bundle goodies
Only took 'em what, 3.5 years to bring this to Wii U? -_-'
BlitWorks is publishing this, not Nicalis.
14 bucks is a little steep though, for that price it should have all the content from the other versions (music and characters).
Brilliant I was heartbroken when the Wiiware release was cancelled years ago.
I'll buy it.
I got around to playing a bit of it on PC, but I'm more likely to complete it on Wii U, so I might double dip.
Didn't pay any "real" money for it so far anyway, seeing as I got it in a Humble Bundle.
Surprisingly nice news such possibility, buy it could be a New3DS exclusive. Anyway, I would love to play it on the smaller screen and the very responsive controls of the 3DS as it reminds me of the really competent OlliOlli port. Also SMB could attract more attention to the aging handheld. It seems Nintendo is getting serious about the potencial still asking to come out of their, IMO, last dedicated handheld.
Can Super Meat Boy even compete with the current 3DS market? I'm pretty sure the entire market for SMB on 3DS evaporated with the release of Kung Fu Rabbit, so I don't know what the original can offer that a budget knock-off doesn't already provide.
NB: None of this is a serious comment.
Cool, I'd buy Super Meat Boy on 3DS, BUT... only if it incorporates the systems autostereoscopic 3D.
While that may sound a tad superficial, in my opinion The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth looks pretty terrible on 3DS. Particularly given the games top-down camera, Isaac could have benefited immensely from the systems trademark feature.
If a multi-platform title is to stand out from the crowd on 3DS, it needs to play to the systems strengths.
@Gridatttack Having recently played through Super Meat Boy on PS Vita, the new OST actually grew on me! You're absolutely right though, it's still not up to the sky high standards of Baranowski's original work.
[EDIT]: As for including Nintendo exclusive characters, I reckon Dillon (Dillon's Rolling Western) or Mallo (Pullblox) would be awesome!
He looks a lot like Domo
I already bought this on Steam during last year's holiday sale, but I might pay full price if the 3DS version is any good.
3ds version for sure!
Got it on ps4 and vita so I'll take a miss. Cross buy is awesome and it also had crosssave which means I can play the ps4 one at home and then out and about on the PS vita which works so well for a game like this! Enjoy it anyone who doesn't have it!
Too little, too late
Day one buy for the 3DS if it happens.
What's funny, is that when the Wii and DS servers for online services was going to ho down, I swooped in Warioware DIY Showcase to download as many of the special microgames as I could (I only had 40 minutes to do it). McMillan made a microgame for Super Meat Boy, commerating his release on WiiWare. Of course, it never happened, and I joked it's the closest Nintendo will get to the game.
Good to see it's finally happening. For all those who say, "too late," may I point you to Minecraft Wii U Edition? Still sold lime hotcakes to stay at the top of the charts for seclveral months. I know people begged for Minecraft all the time on Miiverse, but it shows that as long as there's interest, people will buy these late games. There just needs to be more announcements about them.
Day1 DL if they bring it to the 3DS, sure I got a WiiU, but I prefer my gaming on my n3DS ^.^
Going to get it, but not for a while. The humble bundle will keep me busy for now.
@MagusDiablo Was thinking the same thing. Probably it will be a N3DS exclusive
Little dangerous putting on 3DS isnt it? Sure you can play the Wii U versions on controllers over then the gamepad but there'll be a huge increase of 3DS's thrown in frustration for sure.....
I will buy meat boy when it comes out, quite an expensive title though. I will buy a points card next time I go past game, only because I have spent a lot of money on the old credit card recently!
